THE 5th ANNUAL
BREVARD LIVE
MUSIC AWARDS
W
hat do Absolute Blue,
Taylor Made, Medusa
and Black Eyed Soul all have
in common? They’ve each won
the coveted “Entertainer of
the Year” honor at the annual
Brevard Live Music Awards.
It’s hard to believe but it’s
almost that time again. The hometown version of The Grammy
Awards, the biggest night of the
year for our Space Coast music
scene is once again just around
the corner. Yes music fans, next
month Brevard Live will begin the
preliminary voting process for The
5th Annual Brevard Live Music
Awards ceremony.
What started out as a humble
experiment back in 2004 has now
blossomed into a huge annual
event. Also known as The BMAs,
the ceremony typically happens
in late summer and always takes
place at Melbourne’s fabulous
Henegar Performing Arts Center.
Brevard Live’s readers’ votes are
cast and counted throughout the
spring and early summer. When
all has been said and done, the top
vote-getters in various categories
take home “the gold.”
Above all, the BMA ceremony
is a party. It’s a night for entertainers, friends, fans and family to
ALL come out and celebrate our
amazing local music scene. Although we’re in the early planning
stages, we can guarantee that the
‘08 event will be better than ever.
Lots more info including preliminary ballots in next month’s
issue of Brevard Live.
MARCH 19TH At The king center:
George thorogood
& The destroyers
H
ow can you be “Bad to the Bone” and successful in show
business? Well, George Thorogood has an explanation:
“You’re either a genius or very clever.” He thinks he is very
clever. “All I wanted from this thing was a gig, man. And I got
a gig.’’ Thorogood and his band the Destroyers have held that
gig for more than 30 years. And he’s not about to let go now. His
next performance in Brevard County is at the King Center on
March 19th - the very best gig in town!
The Destroyers fought their way
to the top. They came out of Delaware in the ‘70s as a jarringly highenergy band (also featuring drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Billy
Blough) whose raucous, slide guitarstoked, blues-rock takes on tunes by
Chuck Berry, Elmore James, John
Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley and others
helped land them a contract with
Rounder Records. They had moved
to Boston and experienced the city’s
blues circuit before their second album for Rounder, Move It On Over,
struck big with the title track, an
amped-up cover of a Hank Williams
tune. They added a saxophonist,
Hank Carter, and further fame came
in the ‘80s through a signing to EMI
Records, which released a series
of gold records by the band. These
included 1982’s “Bad to the Bone”
(the title track is Thorogood’s bestknown composition and its video became a staple on MTV) and 1988’s
Born to Be Bad with the swaggering
hit, “You Talk Too Much”. The ‘90s
saw more hitmaking with 1993’s
“Get a Haircut” from the album,
Haircut. And more albums followed
continued page 13

THE DESTROYERS continued
into the new millennium with 2003’s
Ride ‘Til I Die on Eagle Records,
which is also putting out his new
disc, Hard Stuff, and a 2004 Capitol
compilation, Greatest Hits: 30 Years
of Rock which went gold and topped
Billboard’s blues chart for 60 weeks,
while winning the magazine’s award
for blues record of the year. And still
to this day, Thorogood downplays
his accomplishments: “In 1970 I
said, ‘You ain’t no genius, George’.
You’ve got to figure out a way to do
this with barely a high school education and no voice to speak of and
some interesting chops on the guitar.
But you’ve got to bullshit your way
in there, man. I say this to the world:
The Beatles did what they did, the
rest of us played the blues!”
The Destroyers have expanded
through the years. They now include
not only Simon and Blough, but guitarist Jim Suhler (a Texan who was
brought aboard in 1999) and saxophonist Buddy Leach, who joined in
2003. The new album, Hard Stuff, is
a keep-the-faith effort with covers of
tracks by John Lee Hooker “Huckle
Up” with its Boogie Chilun flavor,
Jimmy Reed “Little Rain Falling”,
and Fats Domino “Hello Josephine”,
dedicated to the undying spirit of the
people of New Orleans.
Thorogood did more of his
own writing this time, hooking up
with Nashville roots stalwart Tom
Hambridge (who has worked with
Susan Tedeschi, NRBQ and Lynyrd
Skynyrd) for the whomping title
track, plus the gritty travelogue
“Anytown USA” with references
to the rock meccas of Cleveland,
Detroit, and Boston. And Suhler, the
Destroyers’ rhythm guitarist, also
chipped in with some writing credits.
Through it all, Thorogood maintains his cleverness, his success and
most of all - his gig!
ROBBEN
FORD
On Friday,
April 11th, fourtime Grammy
nominated blues
legend Robben
Ford will perform
along with Johnny
Winter at the Space
Coast Convention
Center.
Recently, Ford’s 2007 release,
“Truth,” received a Grammy nomination in the category of “Best
Contemporary Blues Album.”
Named the among the “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century”
Musician magazine, Ford had an
interest in music from an early age.
Ford picked up the saxophone at
age 10 and, influenced by the guitar sound of The Paul Butterfield
Blues Band, Michael Bloomfield
and Elvin Bishop, he was playing
guitar at age 13.
Eventually Ford joined his
brothers Mark and Patrick in forming the Charles Ford Blues Band.
The group’s name was chosen in
homage to Ford’s father, a country and western musician. Robben Ford’s career got a jumpstart
when the Charles Ford Blues Band
opened for Charlie Musselwhite.
Ford was just 18 at the time. The
group went on to record two albums, but Ford eventually went his
own way.
Ford went on to play in key
backup bands which offered studio
and live support for artists such
as Jimmy Witherspoon, George
Harrison, and Joni Mitchell. As
part of L.A. Express, Ford played
on George Harrison’s American
tour and performed on Mitchell’s records “Hissing of Summer
Lawns” and the live album, “Miles
of Aisles.” For has also lent his
talents to Miles Davis, Phil Lesh,
Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald,
and Greg Allman.
But Ford’s resume is replete with
more than star-studded associations. After leaving L.A. Express
in 1979, he started a solo recording career with the release of “The
Inside Story.” (He recorded the
album with the help of a group that
would later be known as the Yellowjackets.) Nine years later, his
release “Talk to Your Daughter”
earned him his first Grammy nomination in the category of “Best
Contemporary Blues Recording.”
Shortly thereafter he joined David
Sandborn’s The Sunday Night
Band, which was part of the latenight NBC program, “Nite Music.”
In all, Ford, 56-years-old, has
helped produce 19 albums. His
most recent work is a new live
clinic DVD, “The Art of Blues
Rhythm.” For more information on

MARCH 28TH At The Pier:
THE BEACH BOYS
by Jeff Nall
O
n Friday, March 28th, a band known worldwide for popularizing surfing and beach
culture in its music, the Beach Boys will bring their
iconic surf-themed pop-rock to the Cocoa Beach
Pier.
Just two years ago, surviving members of the band,
Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston,
and David Marks, came together to celebrate the 40th
anniversary of Pet Sounds and the double-platinum success of Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the Beach
Boys.
One of America’s longest lasting bands, the group
released The Warmth Of The Sun in May 2007, a new
collection featuring nearly 30 songs that span the
group’s 47 year history. Proving that the Beach Boys
aren’t a thing of the past, the CD debuted at number
40 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Songs include 1957
“Disney Girls,” “Surf’s Up,” “California Dreamin’,”
and new stereo mixes for six other tunes.
Over the years the Beach Boys has amassed 36 Top
40 hits, the most of any U.S. rock band, as well as 4 #1
hit singles. In 1988, founding members Brian Wilson,
14 - Brevard Live March 2008
brothers, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and
friend Al Jardine, as well as later members David Marks
and Bruce Johnston, were inducted in the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame. Ten years later the band was also admitted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. And in 2001
the band received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement
Award.
The Beach Boys started out as a group of teenage
boys practicing and perfecting vocal harmonies in Brian
Wilson’s bedroom. The group went on to explore surf
and beach culture in their music after Dennis encouraged the others to write a few songs on the increasingly
popular Southern California lifestyle.
Initially, the band called itself The Pendletones. But
when the band’s first single, “Surfin,” was being issued,
a promotional worker, Russ Regan, changed the band’s
name to the “Beach Boys.” Mainly due to the fact the
singles could not be reprinted with the original name,
the name stuck. So did the surfing motif.
The Beach Boys followed “Surfin” with the 1966
release of what would later become one of the most acclaimed albums in the history of the U.S., Pet Sounds.
The album featured songs such as “Wouldn’t It Be
Nice.” Decades later, MOJO magazine’s assembly of
concerts
expert songwriters and producers named the disk “The
Greatest Album Ever Made.” Rolling Stone magazine
ranked the album number 2 on its list of “500 Greatest
Albums of All Time.”
The boys made another big splash when the single,
“Good Vibrations,” rattled the airwaves. The tune
became part of the follow-up album, Smiley Smile, and
has been ranked among one of the best rock songs ever.
VH1 ranked the song number 8 on their list of “100
Greatest Rock Songs.”
The 70s found the Beach Boys offering little to
no new material particularly between 1973 and 1976.
Nevertheless, the group’s music gained new traction and
growing appreciation. In 1974, the band added vocal
support to Elton John’s hit “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down
on Me.” Rolling Stone magazine awarding the group
with the title “Band of the Year” that same year. In 1975,
the group joined Chicago in a highly successful tour.
Continuing to renew themselves with each passing decade, the Beach Boys found key success in the
1980s as well. David Lee Roth did his part by recording a popular rendition of the song “California Girls.”
Attempting to keep with the times, the band joined rap
group The Fat Boys in performing “Wipe Out.” The
group’s greatest success, however, came from a surprising chart-topper in “Kokomo.” The single was the Beach
Boys’ first #1 hit in more than 20 years. In fact, the tune
became the band’s best-selling hit ever.
The Beach Boy’s history, however, hasn’t been all
fun and sunshine. Longevity has had its costs: members have engaged in legal battles over song ownership
rights; Brian Wilson has struggled with personal difficulties; and Dennis and Carl Wilson have passed on.
Simply put, no one should take for granted the opportunity to hear one of America’s most seminal bands
play in our own backyard. Save the date: March 28th.
The Beach Boys performed a few magical concerts at
The Cocoa Beach Pier in past years. This month you
can expect another incredible show of sound and light.
Did you know…
The Beach Boys were one of the first rock bands
to start their own label.
H
H The Beach Boys’ 1967 album, Wild Honey, features a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made to Love
Her.”
H In 1975 the band teamed up with Chicago for a
concert tour that saw members of both groups performing one another’s songs.
Elton John’s 1974 hit, “Don’t Let the Sun Go
Down on Me,” features the voices of Beach Boys
members.
H
Rolling Stone magazine awarded the group “Band
of the Year” in 1974.
H
H The Beach Boys were originally named The
Pendletones.
The Beach Boys were inducted Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame in 1988.
H
H The Beach Boys best-selling hit is “Kokomo,”
which came out in 1988.
Members of the band appeared on episodes of
Full House and Home Improvement.
H
H Brian and Mike wrote “The Warmth of the Sun”
in response to the assignation of President JFK, the
day after his death, November 23, 1963.

C
otton became interested in music when he first heard Sonny
Boy Williamson on the radio. He
left home to find Sonny Boy in West
Helena, Arkansas. Sonny Boy took
him in and raised him. Cotton would
begin his career playing the blues
harp in Howlin Wolf’s band.
While he played a few instruments, Cotton was famous for his
great work on the harmonica. Cotton began to work with the Muddy
Waters Band in 1955. He performed
songs such as “I Got My Mojo
Working” and “She’s Nineteen Years
Old”. Muddy would often compare
young Cotton to Little Walter. In
1965 he formed the Jimmy Cotton
Blues Quartet with Otis Spann on
piano to record between gigs with
Water’s band. After leaving Muddy’s
band in 1966, Cotton toured with
Janis Joplin while pursuing a solo
career.
Cotton played harmonica on
Muddy Water’s Grammy Award
winning 1977 comeback album
Hard Again, produced by Johnny
Winter. The James Cotton Blues
Band became The James Cotton
Trio, and by 1987, he was up for his
second Grammy Nomination. The
first one was for his 1984 release,
Live From Chicago: Mr. Superharp

Back.
A throat problem left Cotton
with an raspy voice but he continues
to tour infrequently.

Brevard Live March 2008 - 19
interview
NATHAN THORPE
by Jeff Nall
M
ost Brevard Live
readers are more
than a little familiar with
local blues guitarist amd
vocalist Steve Thorpe
and his Blues Orchestra.
You’re probably unfamiliar, however, with Steve’s
son, Nathan. Please meet
Nathan Thorpe - bass guitarist extraordinaire!
Nathan is best known
as one of the four or so
players who fill in on bass
for the Blues Orchestra.
As of late, he’s been making his own, independent
splash in the business.
Recently, Nathan picked
up key endorsements
from music equipment
companies, Hartke and
Hipshot. He’s also been
developing a following
for his own unique bass
guitar skills. In February,
Brevard Live talked to
Nathan to get the goods
on his goals and current
success.
20 - Brevard Live March 2008
Brevard Live: When did you
begin playing bass and do you play
any other instruments?
Nathan Thorpe: I think I started
playing Bass when I was about 18
years old, it was when I was finishing up with high school. I can
play some other instruments such
as piano, guitar, trombone, I mess
around with a banjo every once in a
while. I guess it’s a Kentucky thing.
How long have you been playing with your father?
NT: I believe it has been about 4
years now? I quit once, I think the
drummer was doing something like
rushing a song you know, something
like that but I’d get laser eyes for it.
I don’t know if you ever got laser
eyes before but it’s kind of like being thrown into the sun.
BL: What bassist and genre of
music have been most influential
on your personal style?
NT: I’d say the most influential one
would be Victor Wooten. I think a
lot of my tone and a lot of the techniques I got from him. And there
are some others I’ve got to mention
because they all really shaped the
way I play, like Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, And I got
to mention David Pastorius because
he gave me a big leg up on how to
play, and I think he’s a big part of
the reason I got into playing bass in
the first place.
I understand that you’ve been
having some success independent
of your role in your dad’s band. Do
you envision branching off into a
solo act? If so, what kind of stuff
would you like to play?
NT: Yep, ever since I started playing
I’d always practice solo bass stuff.
And when I would go learn a song,
I would figure out the bass line and
the melody. Then I would start putting them together and doing kind of
like what a guitar player would do
if he was doing finger-picking. But
I mix different techniques together
like tapping and slapping. I think
about a year ago I put a video on
youtube and had so much awesome response from it that it kind
of inspired me to really think about
myself as an artist and about what I
want to do. I’ve gone to some open
mic nights at some coffee shops and
some bars to test the water. And I
was really blown away how well
it went over. I never thought that I
could just sit down and play bass
and people would actually like it.
It’s one thing to take a bass solo
at a club – you might get a yell or
whistle you know something like
that—but to have everyone stop
whatever they were doing and just
sit and watch is just indescribable.
There’s no way I can explain how
that feels.
I’ve always felt that playing in
my Dad’s band has never really let
me just do what I really do. I mean,
he lets me do some cool stuff, but
my real strength, I think, is just me
and my bass. So I’ve been working
on songs and singing. You can check
me out on myspace.com/nathanthorpe and youtube.com/nathanthorpe to
get an idea on what I’ve been doing.
Have you written any of your
interview
own songs? If so, talk about one
that you’re particularly excited
about.
NT: I sure have. I’ve had some ideas
and stuff I’ve really wanted to do
and now I’m really started to let it
out. There is one song that’s been on
my mind for a while and I’m excited
because it’s something really personal, and a side of myself I don’t really
share with anyone
I hear you received endorsements from Hartke and Hipshot.
First of all, tell us what/who these
companies are and, secondly, how
did you score the endorsements?
NT: Yeah, I’m pretty excited about
them. Hartke is a bass amp company
and Hipshot makes drop tuners and
bass tremolos. I got both endorsements from my youtube videos. I
just got a hold of the artist rep. guys
from both companies and was like,
hey I’m Nathan and this is what I
do. And two or three e-mails later I
got stuff in the mail. I’m also talking
to a wireless company about another
endorsement, so I’ve been looking
forward to that one too.
Finally, when do you plan to
begin helping people with your
repair services?
NT: Right now. I just finished a pretty tough head stock repair. I posted
the pictures up on my myspace. I’m
going to be doing restrings, setups,
electrical stuff, pretty much everything. I’m going to have a phoneline setup soon, but right now myspace and e-mail are the only way to
get hold of me as of now.
You can catch Nathan at Lou’s
Blues on March 7th and 14th, at
O’Doherty’s Irish Restaurant in St.
Cloud on March 14th, or the House
of Blues on March 25th.

The Band that Won’t Die
DEAD SERIOS
I
n the late 80s and early
90s, the outrageous, awardwinning and (often) politically
incorrect band Dead Serios
ruled Florida’s music scene.
Their mega-decibel, over-thetop live show which included various props and on stage characters, combined
with such memorable, high energy, hard rock anthems as “Butterbean Queen,”
“Psycho Dyke” and “Pizza Face” made them an unforgettable and endearing
favorite. In fact, Billboard Magazine summed up the group best when it referred
to Dead Serios as “A hard-core band with a locker room sense of humor.”
1991 Florida’s reigning “Entertainer of the Year,” Dead Serios was drawing
huge crowds, selling records, winning awards, receiving radio airplay and
popping up in such national magazines as Billboard and Creem. And with bigtime industry “suits” representing the group on both coasts, Dead Serios was
truly poised to become “the next big thing.”
Bassist Joe DelCorvo recalls the band’s glory days - “I never realized how
big we had become until one night, a girl in the front row at one of our shows
flashed us. To our surprise, she had tattooed a caricature of our singer’s face on
her chest between her breasts. Now that’s what I call a dedicated fan!”
But times were changing and by 1993 the show was all but over for the selfproclaimed “Kings of Snot Rock.”
“Everything changed in the 90s,” guitarist Doug E.G. recently told Brevard
Live regarding the band‘s ultimate (yet temporary) demise. “Nirvana came on
the scene and over night, WE were over! Fun music and big shows were out and
gloom & doom was in. We had fallen and couldn’t get up.”
After taking a few years off, the band came out of retirement in 1998 and
began staging successful annual local reunion shows. However, by 2006, the
band’s sizzle once again began to fizzle.
But in the last few months, the group has been enjoying an unexpected
resurgence in popularity, thanks to the Internet. “We honestly thought we were
finished,” added drummer, Scooter Greenbud . “But when we got nearly 10,000
hits on our Myspace page in just one month last December, we thought, holy
cow, people are still diggin’ us!”
“Immature, juvenile humor and loud, kick-ass rock and roll was cool 20
years ago, it’s cool now and it always will be cool,” boasted front man and
founder D.L. (Dead Lee) Serios. “Fortunately we’ve been discovered by a whole
new crop of disenfranchised 15 year old mall rats who wanna rock and piss off
their parents. Combine these new young fans with the old dinosaurs that have
stayed with us over the years and you’ve got a freaking army! It really seems like
the good old days all over again.”
Although the members of Dead Serios aren’t making any long term plans,
they are quite excited about their March 29th all-ages reunion show at The
Metro in West Melbourne. (myspace.com/deadserios)

St. Patrick’s Day:
PARTY WITH
THE IRISH
On March 17th, the
population in Brevard
County turns Irish!
The beer flows green,
the pipes and drums
are marching and it’s
corned beef & cabbage
for dinner.
The biggest St. Patrick’s Street Party is held by Meg
O’Malley’s, downtown Melbourne’s favorite Irish restaurant and pub. This year the big parade is on Saturday,
March 15th. Starting at 1 pm the festival will kick off with
the Melbourne Pipes and Drums, lots of floats, green beets
and entertainment. The party continues into the wee hours.
Then, on Monday, March 17th and the actual St. Patrick’s
Day, Meg O’Malley’s starts the day early by serving an
Irishman’s Breakfast Buffet from 8 to 10:30 am.
There will be all kinds of entertainment all day long
featuring music by The Wyndbreakers, Cahir O’Doherty,
The Hooligans, Greg & Brian as well as Irish Dancers,
bagpipers and more. And don’t forget the food which be
served outside and inside the restaurants.
East New Haven Avenue in Historic Downtown Melbourne will turn into a “St. Patrick’s Party Strip” where you
can go bar-hopping and taste Irish specialties for two days
to honor the Irish Saint.

THE COLUMN
by Chuck Van Riper
A
RIGHT (WING) - SPEAK
ll conspiracy theorists need some catch phrases
to bandy around to legitimize their theories. You
always hear stuff like “I can’t vote for him/her. He/she
is CFR!” What could that possibly mean? Uhh.. candy..
fountain ..red. No that can’t be it! How about crooked
f*!&ing republicans? No? Allow me, once again, to
elucidate.
Here are a few often heard bandy-able phrases. The
CFR, the Trilateral Commission, the IMF, and of course,
the infamous Bilderberg Group. Who are these groups
and what relevance are they? Why do they conjure up
such a negative connotation amongst many theorists?
Firstly, I’ll try to briefly explain who these groups are.
1. The CFR, the Council on Foreign Relations, is an
“independent and nonpartisan foreign policy membership
organization” founded in 1921. The Council’s mission is
promoting understanding of foreign policy and America’s role in the world. (That sounds nice, doesn’t it?). In
1919, it is said, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)
became the American headquarters for the Illuminati, led
by Edward M. House. They are funded by Rockefeller
Foundation, Carnegie Endowment, Ford Foundation, J.P.
Morgan and the Wall Street banking interests.
“From the beginning, their goal was to infiltrate the
government, and that was done. Actually, they were so
successful, that today, the CFR practically controls, and
dictates, both domestic and foreign policy.” ---- www.
lonelantern.org
In 1950, James Warburg states: “We shall have world
government whether or not we like it. The only question is whether world government will be achieved by
conquest or consent.” In 1958, Harpers magazine states,
“What they strive for would inevitably lead to dictatorship and loss of freedoms by the people. The CFR was
founded for ‘the purpose of promoting disarmament and
submergence of U.S. sovereignty and national independence into an all-powerful one-world government’.”
Some of its current members include David Rockefeller, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Dick Cheney, John
McCain, Barack Obama, Colin Powel, Sandra Day
O’Connor, George Stephanopoulos, Madeleine Albright,
Christopher J. Dodd, Dianne Feinstein, Newt Gingrich,
Alan Greenspan, as well as most of the banking firms, oil
companies, and many media moguls. Most of the current
administration is CFR. (Jimmy Carter’s staff consisted
of more than 200 CFR members!)
26 - Brevard Live March 2008
One of the current projects of this group is the establishment of the “North American Union”, or NAU. This
would make Mexico, the United States, and Canada a
single union, sharing borders, laws, money (google “the
Amero”), and wiping out all sovereignty of the three
countries. The Constitution would no longer be in effect.
2. The Trilateral Commission was put together in
1973. It came out of the “International Commission of
Peace and Prosperity”, which was put together by David
Rockefeller and Zbigniew Brzezinski after Nixon’s
policy changes regarding free trade in 1971. Brzezinski’s 1970 book, “Between Two Ages”, which he called
for a new international monetary system, became the
“Bible of the Trilateralists. He called for “deliberate
management of the American future”, a “community of
nations” and a “world government”. He became its first
director in 1973. Funding for the group came from David
Rockefeller, the Charles F. Kettering Foundation, and the
Ford Foundation.
The Trilateral Commission represents a union of
experts and transnational elite from the three noncommunist industrial regions of the world: North America,
Japan, and Western Europe. Many of its members are
also in the CFR as well as the Bilderberg Group. Rockefeller saw a need for change. The theory was that
America’s role should be diminished and made equal to
the Common Market [E.U.] and Japan, because together,
the three represent 70% of the world’s trade.
In 1973, they met with Pope Paul VI, who afterward
called for the nations to form a “world government”. A
Trilateral Commission Task Force Report, presented at
the 1975 meeting in Kyoto, Japan, called ‘An Outline
for Remaking World Trade and Finance”, said: “Close
Trilateral cooperation in keeping the peace, in managing
the world economy, and in fostering economic development and in alleviating world poverty, will improve the
chances of a smooth and peaceful evolution of the global
system.”
The group is run, pretty much by the Rockefellers.
David says “far from being a coterie of international conspirators with designs on covertly ruling the world, the
Trilateral Commission is, in reality, a group of concerned
citizens interested in fostering greater understanding and
cooperation among international allies.” However, those
who have penetrated the inner workings of the organization say the real purpose of the Commission is to take
over all key policy-making positions in the government.
“Trilateralists have rejected the U.S. Constitution and
the democratic political process; and their objective is to
obtain the wealth of the world for their own use, under
the guise of “public service”, and to have, ultimately, a

Fans, by the time you read this you will already
have knowledge of the Oscar winners.
Yours Truly, Franco Dean
Atonement
Starring: James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Saoirse
Ronan & Vaness Redgrave. Rated: R. Running Time:
123 Minutes
This Oscar nominated movie, part war story /
love story, is about a young English girl who in 1935
changes the course of several lives when she accuses
her older sister’s lover of a sexual crime that he did
not commit. Knightley is Cecelia, the daughter of a
wealthy highbrow family who has a dalliance with
Robbie (McAvoy), the college-educated son of the
family housekeeper. Cecelia’s younger sister Briony
(Ronan ) also has a crush on the young man. After
witnessing the aforementioned couple in a love-making
embrace, Briony’s lie is born. That lie leads to Robbie’s
imprisonment and ultimately the battlefield in the early
stages of WW ll. Director Joe Wright captures the
brutality of war superbly, as in his memorably stark
visual take on the English retreat at Dunkirk in 1940.
Knightley and McAvoy give excellent performances
as the doomed couple who never get to spend quality
time with each other. Oscar-nominated Ronan is equally
impressive as the lying, emotionally-challenged girl.
Redgrave play the Briony charactoer much later in life,
a successful writer who confesses her misdeeds and
reveals the story’s true ending. B
There Will Be Blood
Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Ciarnin
Hinds and Dillon Freasier. Rated: R. Running Time:
158 Minutes
This Oscar-nominated film is the story of oil drilling
in the American West at the beginning of the 1900’s.
Lewis turns in a magnificent portrayal that may very
well garner him his 2nd Best Actor Academy Award. His
performance as flamboyant oil tycoon Daniel Plainview
is riveting and mesmerizing, as the man is full of
greed and oily charisma in his quest to be the best. He
wants oil and he wants it all! He gets wind of a dusty
California town that oozes Texas tea, or bubblin’ crude,
if you will. He arrives there and transforms the indigent
town into a collection of oil wells, with promises of an
abundance of local improvements. After all, as he puts
28 - Brevard Live March 2008
it, “Ladies and gentlemen, I am an oil man.”
He is forthright and headstrong and occasionally
will resort to brutality. His eccentricity knows no
bounds. Through all of this his main antagonist is Eli
Sunday (Dano) a local lost-prophet-of-a-preacher, who
is wound too tightly. He is full of Evangelical intensity.
The 2 become angry enemies who despise one another,
all the while playing a power game with the minds and
hearts of the towns folk.
This film is daring and sprawling in it’s splendor, the
kind of which you may never witness again. The radical
soundtrack music by Johnny Greenwood is equally as
intense as the movie. Oscar nominated writer/director
Paul Thomas Anderson has undeniably created an epic
in There Will Be Blood A-
The Bucket List
Starring: Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman & Sean
Hayes. Rated: PG 13. Running Time: 98 Minutes
Director Rob Reiner (All in the Family’s Meathead)
scores another hit. This time he comes up with a very
sweet and sentimental film about a couple of dying
cancer patients who manufacture a To-Do-list before
they drop dead, or kick the bucket. (Hence the title)
Jack is a billionaire health-care CEO, while Morgan
is a simple mechanic. The 2 decide to do some globetrotting and in the process do some soul searching and
get sentimental about life in general. They share nothing
in common but bond over their tragic misfortune to
become pals regardless. These 2 Oscar winners see the
7 Wonders of the World and WONDER whats next on
their list.. The novelty wears off quickly and director
Reiner piles on the jerking-for-tears at the end, as the
bucket ends up with a couple of holes in it. C

one-world socialist government, with them in control”,
says Anthony Sutton
Some notable Trilateralist are Ronald Regan (who
had 287 Trilateral and CFR members in his administration), Alexander Haig, Donald Rumsfeld, Alan Greenspan, Caspar Weinberger, Walter Mondale, George H.W.
Bush, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Dick Cheney, Colin Powell,
and many other CFR members.
One Trilateral member, Winston Lord, former
president of the CFR, states: “The Trilateral Commission
doesn’t run the world, the Council on Foreign Relations
does that!”

JOHN MOONEY
& BLUESIANA
J
ohn Mooney, American
blues guitarist and singer
based in New Orleans,

music style by combining the Mississippi Delta
style blues with the funky
second line beat of New
Orleans. As a guitarist, he
is especially known for
his impressive slide guitar
work. He released his first
album Comin’ Your Way on
Blind Pig Records in 1979.
In 1981, he formed his own
band Bluesiana with whom
he has been recording and
touring with since. He
has released albums from
several different labels. In
2000, he returned to Blind
Pig to release Gone to Hell
which featured Dr. John as
a special guest. His latest
release Big Ol’ Fiya was
nominated for Blues Music
Awards’ “Contemporary
Blues Album of the Year”

WHERE STUFF DON’T MATCH THE COUCH
Langniappe was going to be the name of an
eclectic new shop in downtown Melbourne. It’s a
southern word that means “a little something extra” you know, like “a baker’s dozen”. That name proved
to be difficult to market much less say so YAPA was
born. It is a peruvian word from which Langniappe is
derived.
Inside you can find various environmentally
friendly home and gift items from exotic places.
Crafts like “raved about” outdoor rugs from Thailand
and one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture from India
and Indonesia, most of which are constructed from
reclaimed teak or mahogany wood. YAPA also
has unique jewelry, hand woven straw bags from
Morocco, recycled rice bags from Cambodia and
hand-knitted stuffed animals made by women from
a small village in Kenya. They also have a great
selection of artwork, sculptures, wall hangings and
weather-proof outdoor art.
Owner Robin Ahmed and her assistant June Miller
value every customer as their guest. Their philosophy
is fun, funky, fabulous finds; forever friends;
enhancing life; and spreading happiness. Their vision
is to provide inspiration to imagine, create and live
a more passionate life. This attitude is what stirred
Robin to create YAPA and keep it fresh everyday!
Stop by today and experience the crafts from other
countries. There is something for everyone in every
price range. Yapa is located in Downtown at 724 New

Sylvestris Tree Farms In Vero Beach:
TIME TO PLANT A TREE
T
hey say, to feel accomplished man should
build a house, plant a tree and raise a son.
So here you are in your nice house, your son
is bringing home good grades, and the only
dilemma you have is the tree. After all, we live
in Florida with sandy soil, extreme heat, regular
drought, hurricanes, heavy rains, cold snaps,
and your choice of trees is rather limited. But
there is one species that can weather it all - the
Phoenix Sylvestris Robusta, a beautiful palm
tree that will grace your house and cause envy
in your neighborhood. Best of all, these trees
are affordable and you can buy them in any size
at Sylvestris Tree Farms in Vero Beach.
This new and fabulous Silver Date Palm originates
from northern India. The very large seeds (by far the
largest in any Phoenix) will produce a quick growing,
robust seedling, and eventually a thick trunked, large
and stately tree with a full crown of magnificent, silvery-greyish, plumose leaves. This palm will take considerable exposure to frost and is the only large Phoenix
that will grow in climates with hot, humid summers and
even tropical climates without being attacked by fungus.
“It’s the perfect tree for our area”, say Claude Gibalski
who owns and works the Sylvestris Tree Farms together
with his brother Jerry.
Four years ago Claude and Jerry, who grew up in
Miami, took a ride on their Harleys heading north. “This
is when we found a 30-acre-property in Vero Beach”,

says Claude. It was the perfect spot for a tree farm. They
bought it, cleared the land and put in the necessary irrigation system. Then they planted the first seeds.
Fast forward and today the Sylvestris Tree Farms
has 7,500 trees between 2 and 4 years “old” for prices
starting at $45 for pots, the field-grown start at $150.
Delivery and installation are available.
The two brothers had foresight because in 2006
the Sylvestris Date Palm was pronounced “Tree of the
Year”. It is disease-free, hearty, grows 1’ to 1 1/2’ per
year, gets over 30 feet tall and are salt and wind tolerant
and you can plant them anytime.
Sylvestris Tree Farms is located at 6355 69th Street

F
MACHINA is a Must See!
irst of all, I’m truly excited to tell you about what
has to be (in my humble opinion) the most exciting
show taking place in Brevard this month. On Saturday
March 15, former members of the bands Evanescence
and Future Leaders of the World (FLOW) will appear
and perform live as Machina, at The Metro in Melbourne.
Comprised of Phil Taylor, former front-man for now
defunct FLOW, and John LeCompt, former guitarist for
Evanescence, Machina is a hard rock band roots in the
Arkansas music scene. Local rockers, Jon the Liar, will
open for the band. Advance tickets are $15 and tickets
at the door are $20. The show begins at 8:30 pm. If you
miss grunge but also like modern melodic trends in rock,
you’ll love Machina.
A few years back I did an interview with Phil Taylor
and a lengthy story on his then band, Future Leaders of
the World. By the time the piece was going to press I
discovered the band’s label, Epic, had basically canned
the group. If you’ll allow me to editorialize a tad more
than I usually do, I have to say that I think Taylor is one
of the most creative, thought-provoking, and unique
voices in modern rock.
Equally interesting is Taylor’s personal story. About
five years ago, Tayler left his home in Buffalo to follow
his rock-n-roll dreams in California. But when a relative kicked him out after just a few days, he was faced
with a conundrum: go back home, or stick it out. Tayler
choose to rough it out, spending six months sleeping on
rooftops, couches and a local park. It all paid off, at least
initially, when Tayler’s project was signed to Epic in
2003.
When it was all said and done, FLOW’s debut, LVL
IV, sold more than 200,000 copies. Driven by Tayler’s
unique, Cobainesqe vocals, the single “Let Me Out”
reached #3 on the Active Rock Chart and #6 on the Billboard Chart.
A former grassroots activist who has worked for organizations like the California Public Interest Research
Group (CALPIRG), Tayler’s music is laden with potent
messages that will resonate with those concerned about
America’s political direction. In a 2005 interview Taylor
told me how he believes music has the power to significantly impact society. “I definitely believe it has the

power to move people,” he said. “Whole societies are
based on music. I mean, look at Mozart. He changed the
whole entire construct of music. Look at (Leonardo) da
Vinci. Artists change the world just as much as scientists
do. People don’t realize it, but they do. Look at architecture; everything is art; science is art.”
My advice: check this show out. Who knows, maybe
it’ll change your life. Either way you’ll get a great rockn-roll show. (To hear the band go to www.myspace.com/

News’ Flash: Blind Melon is back...
... and playing in Orlando this month! Yup, you read
right. On Saturday, March 8, Blind Melon will perform
live at Backbooth in Orlando.
I’ll tell you from the start that I’m not sure how you
resurrect a band whose backbone happened to be singer
Shannon Hoons, who died of a drug overdose. But apparently the band’s remaining members believe they
have a winning formula. In 2006, the band reformed
with singer Travis Warren at the vocal helm. The band
released a single, “Wishing Well,” in advance of a new
album due out in April. I have to admit that Warren
seems to be a good fit. Hear for yourself: www.myspace.
com/blindmelon. If you want to catch the show go to
www.backbooth.com for more info.
Brevard Vocalist in
American Idol Finals
Brevard’s music scene has reached another climatic
point: Melbourne vocalist, Robbie Carrico, has reached
the finals of “American Idol.” One of 24 finalists, Carrico’s rock style follows American Idol predecessors like
Chris Daughtry.
Over the years Carrico has split his time working
full-time singing before sold out stadiums, working here
in Brevard with his dad’s painting company (Carrico
Paint), and, most recently, playing with Missing Picket.
Early in his career Carrico toured with the likes of Orlando Top 40 group, Boyz N Girlz United, opening for
Britney Spears and N’Sync.
In a previous interview I conducted with Carrico, he
traced his roots to the likes of Bon Jovi and said the biggest payoff of being a vocalist was performing his music
live. Reflecting on his experience in Boyz n Girlz, Carrico said he liked the freedom of playing in a rock band.
“When I was in Boyz n Girlz we did the biggest tours
there were at the time: Britney Spears’ first United States

tour and then her European tour. We had choreography;
we had these outfits, we had to match…. But in Missing
Picket, everybody gets up in their t-shirts and jeans, and
plays whatever they feel.”
Reflecting on the impact he’s had on listeners, Carrico said, “I’ve had people come up to me and say ‘I
really dig what you people are doing’, that’s what I want
people to say ‘I understand what you’re talking about’.”
Carrico currently has a profile on American Idol’s
website, featuring photos and information on the
26-year-old performer. He lists Korn’s Jonathan Davis
and Rob Thomas among his key musical influences. To
keep up with Carrico’s campaign to become the next

RAISING FUNDS TO FIX
MELBOURNE JAYCEES
Many of Brevard’s younger people will know that
the Melbourne Jaycees has been one of the most important venues for local rock bands. Over the years, promoters like Little Reggies Productions (LRP) have made
a de-facto home out of the venue located at 2401 Post
Road. The place, however, is in need of some repair. So
LRP has decided to hold benefit shows in March and
April in order to assist in making some key improvements. LRP wants to put in a cold air conditioner, widen
the stage, fix the bathroom, and other repairs. According
to a statement on LRP’s website, “We want all of you to
know Little Reggies isn’t pocketing a dime during this
time frame. We will be covering expenses and paying
bills, but all profit will be going towards this goal.”
Local bands are helping out by playing for free while
touring bands are being offered reduced pay in order to
meet their objectives.
In March, Little Reggies Productions is bringing a
number of excellent shows coming to the Melbourne
Jaycees. If you like your rock blisteringly fast and psychotically loud, check out: Call to Preserve, Drowned
Out and At Shiloh on March 2. An equally hellacious
show will take place on March 17 featuring Alabama
death metal band, Salt the Wound, Central Florida band,
Catalepsy, and Alabama group, Harvest the Deceased.
Both shows start at 5:30pm.
If you’re looking for something less metal and a
little more rock, on March 7th you can check out rock
band, Rivervele, and California alternative, electronic
band, Anew. The best show, however, is probably the
first show of the month. On March 1, the Courtney’s
from Winter Park will play with Czech Novalis, March44 - Brevard Live March 2008
ing Elephants, Delilah Rogers, Blaha, Jason Choi, The
Clown Car Commute, and others. If you have never
experienced the creative mix of eccentric, indie sugar
rock performed by the Courtneys, do yourself a favor
and make it to this show. Check out the band’s music at
www.myspace.com/courtneys
URSESSION.COM
At the end of January, sHaVo oDaDjIaN launched
ursession.com, which aims to be social networking
website and a music label all at the same time. The website has three main components: 1) urAudition: bands
can “audition” their music, 2) urCommunity: fans and
professionals can network and promote projects with
each other, and 3) urBand: a musicians classified that
allows people to customize searches according to genre,
specialty, and location.
In a press release oDaDjIaN stated: “Not everybody
has the resources to make a demo nowadays. So, we saw
the internet as the best place to break down the barriers of a social network that can benefit everyone. We
thought about how people could audition - a webcam,
uploads, digital audio and video - which then makes
demos obsolete. That means artists don’t need money to
get into our platform. urSESSION.com democratizes,
then empowers everyone in the music community!”
Flogging Molly Performs in Orlando
If you like the idea of mixing dirty punk rock with
traditional Irish music, this is the show for you. On
Friday, March 7, Flogging Molly will bring its 4th annual “Green 17 Tour” to the stage at the House of Blues,
Orlando. The tour, featuring a total of 17 concert dates,
was created to celebrate the March 17th holiday, St.
Patrick’s Day.
The show comes just three days after the band’s
latest release, Float, which promises to be one of the
group’s most accessible albums to date. The new disk
promises to combine the lively and potent traditional
Irish music band founder Dave King grew up on. Despite relatively no help from commercial radio, the band
has managed to sell more than 1 million albums. Flogging Molly’s last disk, Within A Mile Of Home, debuted
at #1 on Billboard’s Independent Artist Chart and #20 on
Billboard’s Top 200 Chart. The band’s 2006 DVD documentary, “Whiskey on a Sunday,” was certified Gold,
and the group’s tours are also a constant success.
Swing-a-mug of beer, sing-along, and be merry.

BREVARD MUSIC FANS
LOSE A GOOD FRIEND
H
e wasn’t in a band. He didn’t
own a club. He didn’t even
book local shows. However, Frank
Blevins was a friend of every
Brevard County music fan that
he encountered over the last three
decades.
As owner of “Play it Again
Music”, Frank was probably one of
the best known and most respected
figures on the local music scene.
Along with his
wife Sharon,
Frank first
opened the West
Melbourne used
record store back
in 1981. What
started out as a
small, part-time
business in a tiny, run down shack,
ultimately became a full-time, fully
staffed operation occupying a 4,000
square foot storefront when he
finally closed shop last fall after 26
years.
Although I knew that he had
been battling serious health issues in
recent years, it still came as a shock
when I recently received a call from
his son Jamie to tell me of Frank’s
passing.
Frank was a kind and gentle
man who loved his family, loved
his friends and loved music and
the Melbourne funeral home was
overflowing with family and friends
who came to celebrate the life of a
great man.
In nearly 30 years, I never heard
Frank ever speak ill of anyone and
I never heard him ever complain
about anything. The sun was always
shining in Frank’s world. He was
truly an inspirational person and
I’m grateful to have called him my
Chris Long
friend.
THE BONE DOGS
Russ Kellum, lead guitar
and singer for the popular
Brevard based band Tru
Bluez has joined together
with Michael Wright on
drums, Mark Glisson on
bass and Derek Castello on
keyboards from Brevard’s
Legendary Groove Monsters
to form the Bone Dogs.
Drawing from song lists familiar to Tru Bluez and Groove Monster
fans, as well as new songs and originals, the Bone Dogs are committed to
continuing the tradition of musical excellence that their fans have come
to expect. Whether they’re playing rock, blues, jazz or even country, the
Bone Dogs take each song and make it their own.
Be sure to catch their club debut at The Beach Shack in Cocoa Beach
on March 15th starting at 8 pm. For more of their upcoming shows check
www.myspace.com/bonedogsband with their website www.bonedogs.net
following soon. For booking information contact Russ at 321-917-7284.
AUSTIN PETTIT
BAND CALLS
IT QUITS
O
n March 2nd (Sunday) the Austin Pettit Band bids farewell to their
fans at the Beach Shack out on the deck from 2-6 pm. This group
had its beginnings in 1995 as the “Blues Wahoos” with Austin Pettit and
Debby Boyer, Randy Crouch and Sharon Denton performing for almost
two years. Kenny Cohen hired Randy and Austin to play in “Piece by
Piece” which consisted also of bassist Curt Austin and keyboardist Dan
Latt. In 1997, Debby officially became part of Kenny’s band which he
renamed The Austin Pettit Band.
When Kenny decided to go solo early in 1999, Randy, Austin, Debby
and Curt continued on. Later, for one year, Curt needed some family
time and so Barry Williams was the bassist. Curt returned and stayed
until August 2006 and Kerry Morris replaced him on the bass. Early in
2008.the group decided to ‘call it a day’. There was just too much of the
day-to-day ‘stuff of life’ and it was extremely hard to keep the band busy
with bookings and to dedicate time for adding new material.
They are all great friends and know there will be events where they
will get to play together from time to time.

Jim Morgan Is The Founder Of The NCRA
PICK A CRAB & JOIN THE RACE
F
or the last five decades Jim Morgan has been in the
bar business. Back when he was just 17, Morgan recalls pouring his first shot behind a California bar. These
days he’s doing less pouring and more crab racing as the
“Commissioner for Life” of the National Crab Racing
Association (N.C.R.A.).
In 1979, Morgan founded the N.C.R.A. While Morgan claims many have tried to imitate his unique league
of racers, it was Morgan who, back in the late 70s,
brought this new sport to the East Coast.
The story of the rise of the prestigious N.C.R.A.,
however, begins with serious three-wheel bike races in
1977 and 1978. At the time Morgan was staging his first
entertainment-sporting event, adult tricycle races for
bars between Ohio and Florida. He said as many as 6
and 7,000 people were attending racing trikes contests.
While down in Miami for a race, Morgan decided
to visit Jamaica for the weekend. “There on the sand 7
or 8 people were gambling on some Hermit crabs,” said
Morgan. At the time he wasn’t impressed and went on
with the trike races. But about a year later, Morgan said
he needed a special event on Sunday for a bar-restaurant
he was running.” The light came on in my head,” he
said. “I went to a local pet store and bought 100 hermit
crabs.”
Crab racing was an immediate success. The very
first event packed the house. Within a few months, a local Cincinnati paper ran a story that eventually traveled
through the Associated Press to a nationwide audience.
The national story hit on New Year’s Eve 1979/1980.
Since then, it’s been all crabs all the time for Morgan.
He says it’s a “totally interactive sport” where crabs
and their various human supporters face off, “mono y
mono.”
“Everyone selects their own racer out of a stable of
over 100 crabs,” explained Morgan. “Then they name
them.” Then it’s off to the races with over 100 competitors. But don’t get the wrong idea. This isn’t just
fun and games. Morgan promises crab racing breeds a
competitive atmosphere that enthralls 50 to 100 cheering people on any given night.
And if you think this crab racing business is just a
wad of banana peels, bare in mind the intense training
these critters experience before hitting the track. “These
are ‘Thoroughbred Hermit crabs’ from my training camp
in Sarasota,” said Morgan.
Bringing the world of sports and art together, the
crabs don’t just train. They get fitted with a shell as
colorful as your average NASCAR car. “The shells are
hand painted in Venezuela when they’re empty. They
come into camp thousands at a time. Put in with the
crabs; and the crabs quickly vacate their ugly shells and
get into the colored ones. The paint does not affect the
crabs as they are not attached as are turtles, etc.”
As for the nefarious counterfeit crab-racing commissioners out there, Morgan has tough words for them:
“Since I was the original racer in 1979, the copy cats
are always trying to catch up. I call them ‘Dirt-trackers.’
There’s only one Kentucky Derby, there’s only one Daytona 500, and there’s only one crab race. The N.C.R.A..”
Finally, for those PETA-minded folks out there,
Morgan explains that the N.C.R.A. takes care of its
senior racers. “After 6 months on the racing circuit, the
crabs are retired as True Champions. They are adopted
out to good homes as some of the greatest pets for kids.”
A select few, he explains, even receive the “prestigious
Morgan Trophy.”
You can catch the excitement Mondays at The Cove
in Satellite Beach, and Tuesdays at Crickets in Melbourne.

ocoa Village’s new Ultra Lounge has an urban feel
with the décor to match. It’s coffee shop meets wine
bar with live entertainment. They have Guinness Stout,
Blue Moon, Negra Modelo and other beers; wines such
as Beaujolais Village, Duboeuf Pouilly Fuisse, Wolf
Blass Chardonnay and Pozzi Pinot Grigio as well as a
full espresso bar and lunch menu.
The atmosphere breeds conversation. I wouldn’t be
surprised if I found myself talking to a perfect stranger
about religious theory or Freud or why food sticks to
non-stick pans.
The lunch menu at The Ultra Lounge is casual yet
interesting. They have smoked salmon delights, which
are 5 toasted French baguettes with cream cheese and
smoked Alaskan salmon, red onion and capers; the DineO-Mite turkey sandwich, Regina’s TreeHouse salad and
other sandwiches.
80’s Hospitality night is every Sunday night with
retro alternative music by DJ Geoff and two for one
drinks. They also have live music Wednesday through
Saturday. One of the performers that I am looking
forward to seeing is Sybil Gage. She’s a Jazz singer
from New Orleans and has been in the area for a while.
This month she will perform live at The Ultra Lounge
on March 6 and 20 from 7-10 pm.

Mainstreet Pub in Downtown Melbourne:
3 YEARS YOUNG
& LOTS OF FUN
Three years ago Mainstreet Pub
opened its doors. What started as a
vision of owners Joe McAneney and
Tom Cross has by far exceeded all expectations. Reason enough to celebrate
the anniversary month and to throw a
huge party in connection with the Friday Fest Street Party on March 14th.
Mainstreet Pub is much more than just a pub, It has
become three bars in one - the pub where you can eat
and drink, the upscale lava bar (upstairs) and the outside
tiki bar in the back. There are also a large patio and a
balcony. The atmosphere is casual, yet classy, and the
many photos of “olde Melbourne” give it a hometown
feel that is rather rare on our fast growing Space Coast.
Tradition did not just come with the place, it came
with owners Joe and Tom, two “homeboys” that were
part of Brevard’s history since the 80’s. Back then Joe
and his mother owned two French restaurants, the first
was Café Riviera in what is now Islands Fish Grill (they
built that from the ground up) and the second was La
Riviera Restaurant which was in the Aquarina facility
on the ocean. Both had a great following, small bars and
live music. “Just Plain” Joe was also one of the founding members of the then popular band Tin Can Jets that
performed at Hard Rock Live, House of Blues and about
every subshop in Central Florida. Partner and longtime
friend Tom Cross also came with many decades of experience in all facets of food and beverage,
Joe talks about the beginning: “In 2004 Tom convinced me to be part of the real estate boom and saw
promise in a property in Downtown Melbourne that we
purchased and later became Mainstreet Pub. I asked my
longtime best friend/ high school buddy, Scott Konrady
to fly in and give me his opinion, and I had planned to
make him an offer if he liked the location. Scott went
on to tell me on our initial conversation that he was
happy with his company McCormick and Schmicks, but
would fly in to visit and look at the property as a favor.
Well, lets say Scott had a change of heart and saw a lot
of promise in our idea, and not only moved here but
convinced his longtime business associate Kevin Carlin
52 - Brevard Live March 2008
to join him on his management staff. That’s how we got
started!”
Friendship and comeradery are definitely the main
ingredients for building this successful place. “We also
have the best collection of spirits like 40 rums, 40 vodkas, 30 tequilas, lots of top shelve liquor, a large variety
of beers and wines, and nothing but fresh squeezed
juices”, says Scott Konrady.
And don’t forget the food.. Scott: “The menu didn’t
come by design, it developed. First, all we wanted to
serve is a huge Roastbeef sandwich, the best in town.
Now we have about 25 popular items on our menu.”
On March 14th, Mainstreet Pub will celebrate its
3-year-success with a great party and a stage in front of
the bar, connecting it all with the ongoing Friday Fest.
And surprise, surprise -, Joe McAneney will pick up his
bass again and play with his recent, “just for fun” band,
The Floridaniacs. The band consist of Mel Scott (lead
vocals), Cap’n “C” Craig Johnson (guitar/ vocal), Dan
Winkler (guitar), Sammy Debella (keyboard), Robbie
Sheridan (drums), and “Just Plain” Joe McAneney.
The Floridaniacs are a fun-band with pro-players.
They call their music FRAT ROCK, part classic rock,
part Motown and part punk rock. Besides crashing
cover tunes, they also have original material.

Indialantic, you’ve got it coming - the best in
Japanese cuisine from delicious sushi rolls to
specialties from the grill. The avant-guard style
restaurant with its cool ambiance contributes
to a special dining experience with a touch of
South Beach.
We came for a “Bento Lunch” (Monday thru Friday
from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm). That means “Lunch Box”
which indludes miso soup and house salad with ginger
dressing. You can choose between an array of sushi and
sashimi specials. The grill offers chicken, steak, salmon,
scallops, shrimp. You can also choose a “Lunch in a
Bowl” (Donburi & Lunch) with other favorites like Pad
Thai, Spicy Seafood Ramen, Yakisoba, Chirashi and
more. The dinner menu is also available.
We chose the Sushi & Sashimi Bento and the
Hibachi Scallops. It was delicious. We were quite full
when the owner sent us a dessert to taste. Just a bite, we
thought, but then we finished this delicious treat that
tasted like an exotic cheese cake - to die for.
Haru is famous for their rolls. I actually counted 74
different rolls on the menu, all different in taste, size
and price. Eat what you are. There is a Casanova roll,
Medusa, Snow White, Pink Lady, Rock & Roll, Good
Father, Dirty Old Man, Spice Girls - but you need to go
there to find out what they are made of.
Dinner is served from 5 to 10 pm Sunday thru
Thursday and 5 to 11 pm on Friday and Saturday. The
menu offers lots of appetizers like Spicy Tuna or Dyna-
mite Lobster, and you’ll be amazed about the variety of
seafood and fish that are prepared on the grill. Landlubers can choose between steak including Filet Mignon,

the arts
DUKE
POINTEK
by
Lou
Belcher
A
fter many interviews
with artists throughout Brevard, I’ve learned
that there is no traditional
route to becoming an artist. Duke Pointek certainly
followed an unusual, but
successful, path in pursuing his passion for art.
Art has always been a part of Duke Pointek’s life.
At the age of two, his mother, an avid crafter, began
introducing art options to him. They included copper
tapping art, leather burning, wood burning, oil painting,
and all the typical chalk, paint and pencil forms of art.
His parents didn’t push him in any particular direction.
Instead, they made sure he had an opportunity to try
everything and to choose for himself.
Born in Philadelphia, Pointek moved to New Jersey
when he was seven. In junior high school, he had his
first one-man show when his work was displayed in the
showcase in the foyer of the school. In those days, he
used to go into the art classroom during his spare time
and work on projects. Today, he is as passionate about
art as he was then.
Pointek took art classes in junior high and high
school and was voted the most artistic in his graduating
class. In the middle of high school, he started custom
painting cars and vans. That was the start of his commercial artistic career. His uncle was in the business and
brought Pointek aboard. He taught him how to apply his
art to the business. Pointek worked for him for a sum56 - Brevard Live March 2008
mer and learned the basics.
Beyond his uncle’s shop, Pointek gathered all the
tools and materials he needed and started a freelance
business painting dirt bikes in his garage. The business
soon grew to include painting of full-blown choppers,
Corvettes and vans in addition to the dirt bikes. He did
all the work himself to ensure top quality.
He continued this business until the age of 25 when
he visited Florida, liked it and decided to move to the
Cocoa Beach area. To make ends meet while he built his
reputation in a new area, he worked for grocery chains.
He would spend 40 hours at his job, and then 30 more
in the garage painting. He continued this for another
ten years. Toward the final three years of painting
motorcycles, he met some people who introduced him
to painting on t-shirts using airbrush techniques. The
possibilities offered by painting on fabric caught his eye
immediately. He took classes in Dallas and in Fort Lauderdale. He met an airbrush artist who taught wildlife
and portraiture painting. He took a course from him and
Pointek’s talent in the area increased exponentially.
From that point, he concentrated on wildlife and
the arts
portraits and used airbrush techniques as well as more
traditional techniques, such as pen and ink, erasers, and
brushes. Pointek indicated that at that stage he started
painting on canvas and would use anything to increase
the realism in his paintings. He admitted that he especially liked using only black and white for portraits.
He sold a few paintings but admitted that he needed
to build a new following for the paintings. In painting
bikes, buyers sought the realism he could produce in the
artwork, but the same didn’t hold true in the paintings.
The detail of his paintings is amazing and people often
mistook them for photographs. To a few, this is a good
thing. To many, he found that they wanted paintings to
look like paintings, not photographs.
Around this time, he visited old friends in New Jersey who introduced him to the possibility of gourd art.
Denise Hagg grew gourds and made them into decorative birdhouses. She showed Pointek magazines with
other art objects made from gourds. He saw limitless
possibilities in that art form. He saw it as an interesting
way to combine many media, such as painting, woodburning, carving, etc. And he said, “I saw so much that I
could do and I could learn.”
First, he knew he had to research and obtain the
tools he needed and to find a supply of gourds. For
the first year, he experimented and practiced with this
new medium. His research paid off as is evident in his
creations. He uses acrylics on the gourds now. For a
while he used dye, but found that it faded. He has found
recently that newer dyes (especially silk and wool dyes)
are more colorfast. He is always experimenting with
new products and likes to work with thinner paints so he
can build up the layers.
This is his third year creating gourd art. You would
think he had been doing it much longer. Each piece is
unique, holding a creative beauty all its own.
To accent his work, he has learned how to coil using
pine needles, grasses, palm leaves…anything natural.
Duke tries to keep away from anything manufactured
except for twine. To get started with coiling techniques,
he took a class from Viola Pace Knudsen. He has been
building on what she taught him. He said, “I’m always
progressing. I’m constantly learning and adding more
and more techniques to what I do.” And, he is constantly
experimenting to make sure he stays ahead of the newest
innovations.
In order to concentrate on gourd art, you must, of
course, have a good supply of gourds. Duke attends
gourd festivals each year to keep up with what is going
on in the art, to show his work, and to make contacts
for selling his work. He attends the annual festival put
on by the Florida Gourd Society, which is a chapter of
the American Gourd Society. This year it was held in
Palatka, Florida, in February.
Duke shows his gourds at three galleries. One is the
Tubac Territory Gallery Furniture and Interiors in Tubac,
Arizona. He learned about them from a distant aunt. He
also shows his work at Sundancer Gallery at 6 Florida
Ave. in Cocoa, Florida, and at Waterfire Studio and Gallery in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.
His main goal for the future is to present his art in
shows around the county, such as the Melbourne Art
Festival and the Cocoa Village and Cocoa Beach shows.
He says that he looks at things completely differently
now. He sees pine needles, feathers and other found
objects as possible parts for future creations. “Working
with art changes your perspective,” he said.
Duke will present a demonstration of his work at the
Waterfire Studio and Gallery on March 29, 2008, from
12 until 4:00pm. On that same evening, between 5:30pm
and 8:30pm, he will combine a demonstration of his
gourd art with the opening reception of his solo show at
Waterfire Studio and Gallery. During the evening opening reception, they will serve hors d’oeuvres and refreshments and a drawing will be held for one of Duke’s
beautiful gourds. Both sessions are free and open to the
public. For more information call 321-728-1342. The
Waterfire Studio and Gallery is located at 1875-C South
Patrick Dr., Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. Don’t miss
this opportunity to meet Duke Pointek and to see his
beautiful work.

PART XXVIII
The Glory Days
HHHHHHHHHHHH by Judy Tatum Lane HHHHHHHHHHHH
M
arch 4th would have been Dave Fiester’s birthday.
He will be no more or no less missed and loved
on that date than any other day, but I felt the need to
acknowledge it. There will be no “Tribute Concert”
or “Reunion Concert”, but with the collaboration of
Dave’s sister Lori Fiester, and the artwork of my brother
Marvin Tatum, we have come up with what we think is
an appropriate thing to do to celebrate the life of Dave
Fiester.
They say “a picture says a thousand words” and
there is no way that I could possibly relay what these
wonderful pictures will tell about Dave, from the time
he was approximately 15 years old with Lori dancing
while he played guitar, right up to the picture taken by
Gloria McDonald as we watched Dave, having no idea
it would be the last time he would play in public. But I
love looking at all the smiles.
Everyone knew Dave in their own way, making for
different relationships and memories. Some of you may
never have known Dave at all, but I hope you had the
privilege of seeing him play. That would have told you
a lot about him as a person if you listened to his guitar
and observed as you watched him. He was at times very
complex while also being very basic. He was just Dave.
But 2 things I personally know for sure is that he was
very capable of giving love and wanted to be loved,
and gave so much to so many, not only as a musician,
but as a person as well. I have tried to talk about him
in my articles as both a man and a musician so that we
58 - Brevard Live March 2008
remember him off stage as well as on. Both are very
important. I won’t begin to try to list all the different
facets of Dave, it would be one sided, from my point of
view, and again, we all knew him in different ways.
There were so very many people in Dave’s life, to try to
capture them with pictures would have taken the entire
Brevard Live magazine, but I hope that this montage
dedicated to Dave will give you a glimpse into the
different stages of his life and his musical career, and
maybe even a little insight into Dave for those who
knew him through his music only.
Every since I decided that I wanted to do something
for Dave I have had the verse of an old Beatle’s song
going through my mind constantly, and it just keeps
coming back and pretty much sums up what I have to
say, so I am going to share it with you.
There are places I’ll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I’ve loved them all
