Views and comments expressed in this newsletter are not necessarily the views and comments
of the Monroe County Commission on Aging. The Monroe County Commission on Aging is a

including the Monroe Center for Healthy Aging. Those receiving services from these programs

News to Note . . .
From the
Director’s Desk . . .
Be happy … not because everything
is good, but because you can see the
good in everything.
Finally Spring! I guess the Groundhog really did see his shadow. It’s
nice to have the warm weather and sunshine back.
This month, we celebrate Older Americans Month, Mothers’ Day,
National Senior Health & Fitness Day, and Memorial Day. We have
lots planned at the Center, and I hope that you’ll be a part of all that’s
offered.
National Senior Health & Fitness Day promises to be a great day. This
is the 5th year that we’ve planned this event — starting in 2012 when
we had Jeff Nichols, the runner-up on the Biggest Loser. This year,
we have a phenomenal keynote planned — Petra Kolber — a national
speaker who is truly inspirational and someone you’ll surely want to
hear.
Petra Kohber will be speaking after lunch on May 25.
We expect to be at capacity.
Reservations are absolutely required.
Call 734.241.0404
Also that day, we’ll be offering blood pressure checks, blood sugar
checks, blood cholesterol and height and weight. Plus, we’ll have
demonstrations of the Balance Class, Chair Yoga, and Enhanced
Fitness. You’re also invited to Lori Adams’ Movin’ and Groovin’
exercise class free of charge. The day offers a perfect combination of
health information and fitness tips. We’re fortunate to be able to
provide this event — courtesy of DTE Energy — a wonderful corporate
citizen & supporter.

Message from RSVP
Spring is in the air (we hope) and so is volunteerism! The month of April is Volunteer Appreciation Month
and contains National Volunteer Week (April 10th – 16th) and Volunteer Recognition Day (April 20th). What is
the best way to celebrate those events? VOLUNTEER! Visit RSVP’s website, stop by our office or call
734-241-0408 for the latest edition of RSVP’s Volunteer Opportunities Guide.
RSVP also, in addition to our regular volunteer assignments, has several “one-time” volunteer opportunities
coming up in the next several months:

Wednesday, April 27, 2016, 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Discuss your family histor y with Bedfor d Public
School students at the Bedford Senior Center over lunch.

May 2016 (dates and times TBA). Play games with fir st and second grader s fr om the Bedfor d Public
Schools at the Bedford Senior Center.

Monday, July 4, 2016 at 1:00 pm. RSVP is teaming up
with the VCAT Region 9 Quality of Life group and
Washtenaw County’s RSVP in supporting a Veterans Family
Picnic in Ypsilanti Township. Volunteers are needed to set up
prior to the event and to serve food and drinks to veterans and
their families. More details to come!

August 9, 11, 12 & 13, 2016. Back Packs for Kids. Help
inventory a gym full of donated school supplies, pack them in
back packs and/or distribute them to needy kids in Monroe
County! Free lunch provided for volunteers who inventory
and pack!

Saturday, September 24, 2016, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Emergency Preparedness Expo. RSVP will be building
disaster kits for vulnerable seniors and providing them to
vulnerable and isolated seniors in Monroe County. Those
disaster kits will be featured at the Emergency Preparedness
Expo at the Mall of Monroe and RSVP volunteers will
demonstrate how to build the kits and provide participants
with information on preparing for and surviving in emergency
situations.
RSVP of Monroe County’s volunteers – all 288 of them – serve 54 community agencies and have served over
35,000 volunteer hours in the last 12 months. RSVP offers its sincere gratitude and many thanks to all of its
dedicated volunteers for their valuable contributions to our community! Job extraordinarily well-done!

From the Program Manager . . .
As I begin my newsletter article for the month, the
popular expression “Love makes the world go round”
comes to mind, but with a slight twist. When I look
back on the last several weeks here at the Center, it’s
been VOLUNTEERS that have made the world go round!
The Center would not be able to function if we did not
have our dedicated volunteers, as well as the community
volunteers that come in to help at special events. They
make things possible for us.
Did you know that when you come into the Center or call the main number, you are talking to
a volunteer and not a paid staff person? That’s how we can have coverage 7 days a week. Our
BINGO offerings would not happen each week if we did not have volunteers leading the way.
The folks that set up, staff, and tear down the quarterly Rummage Sales are volunteers.
Those who bake cookies and man the table at the bake sale are volunteers. Those who
coordinate the card games and run the Saturday Euchre Tournament are volunteers. Did you
just attend the Spring Card Party? Have fun? Win a nice prize? Thank the Chairperson of
the Event, a volunteer. With the exception of yours truly, the Newsletter Assembly Team, who
is hard at work by 6 am on the third Monday of the month—are all volunteers. Do you enjoy
the Tuesday visits from the therapy dog? The dogs and their handlers are all volunteers.
Back on March 26, I ran my first Easter Egg Hunt here at the Center. So many things had to
be done before, during, and after the event. Many of those things were done by volunteers.
The local Aktion Club (the only service club for adults with disabilities that are dedicated to
community service) stuffed 800 Easter Eggs with candy! Members of the Circle K Club (a club
of college students which promotes community service and leadership development), Monroe
High School and Monroe Middle School National Honor Societies, hid the 800 eggs outside—all
volunteers. Did your grandchildren meet Daphne the Easter Pig, get their face painted, or get
a balloon animal? These young people were Teen Ambassadors from our local 4-H Program,
and volunteers. It was the volunteers that made this event a success.
Monroe, and so many communities like Monroe are blessed to have volunteers making a
difference in the lives of others. Maybe you were a Scout Leader or Coach when your kids
were growing up. Now that you are retired, you deliver Meals on Wheels or volunteer at a
Thrift Store. Maybe you keep busy at your
church, serving as an usher/greeter, money
counter, Sunday School Teacher, or coordinate
the “Gods Works” meal your church hosts each
week. Yes, you are as busy as when you
worked full-time, but you are an essential
person in making the community better. You
make the “world go round!”
No matter where you volunteer, I thank you and
appreciate what you do!
~Karen
