In celebration of the 2011 publication of the firstever Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the
Environment, Global Foundation for Democracy
and Development (GFDD) is proud to present this
gallery of images showcasing the island’s rich
biodiversity & natural splendor. Considered one of the most ecodiverse countries in the world, the Dominican
Republic offers its guests an array of exotic
wildlife, rare plants and stunning habitats all within
an area of under 49,000 square kilometers. From prehistoric
iguanas lazing in the sun to the flash of tiny fireflies in the Caribbean
night; from coral reefs teeming with brightly-colored tropical fish
to nesting parakeets in orchid-covered woodlands on volcanic
mountains, the Dominican Republic presents a wealth of experiences
for the eco-traveler.

En celebración de la publicación en 2011 del primer Diccionario
Enciclopédico Dominicano de Medio Ambiente, la Global
Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) se enorgullece
en presentar esta galería de imágenes que exhiben la rica biodiversidad
del país y su esplendor natural.
Considerado uno de los países con ecosistemas más diversos en el
mundo, la República Dominicana ofrece a sus visitantes una gama de
animales exóticos, plantas y hábitats impresionantes, todo dentro de
un área de menos de 49.000 kilómetros cuadrados. Desde prehistóricas
iguanas tomando el sol, hasta el destello de las diminutas luciérnagas
en la noche caribeña, desde los arrecifes de coral rebosando de
peces tropicales de brillantes colores hasta los pericos que anidan en
los bosques cubiertos de orquídeas en las montañas volcánicas, la
República Dominicana presenta una riqueza de experiencias para el

The Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment is
yet another GFDD’s initiative that aspires to foster education and
awareness on important contemporary issues. It seeks to promote
understanding, respect, care, sustainable use and protection of the
environment as well as warn about the dangers of its contamination
and ill use.
El Diccionario Enciclopédico Dominicano de Medio Ambiente es
otra iniciativa de la GFDD que aspira a fomentar la educación y la
conciencia sobre importantes temas de actualidad. Su objetivo es
promover la comprensión, el respeto, el cuidado, el uso sostenible y la
protección del medio ambiente, así como advertir sobre los peligros

CRINOIDS
Know as sea lilies or feather stars, crinoids are a class of
marine invertebrates named for their external appearance.
Over 540 crinoid species have been described worldwide,
most of which are feathery or spiny and are characterized
by a mouth on the top surface surrounded by feeding arms.
There are a total of 18 known species of crinoids in the
Dominican Republic.

INTERACTION OF SPECIES
Acción social que una especie lleva a cabo con otra u
otras especies dentro de un ecosistema.
Social action carried out between one species and another
within an ecosystem.
Existen siete tipos de interacción de especies que
normalmente, en la naturaleza, mantienen la estabilidad de
un ecosistema: amensalismo, comensalismo, competición,
cooperación, depredación, mutualismo y parasitismo.
In nature there are seven types of species interactions or
biological interactions, which help maintain the stability of
an ecosystem, these include: amensalism, commensalism,
cooperation, competition, predation, mutualism and parasitism.

En la región nordeste del pais se encuentra el Parque Nacional
Los Haitises, un extenso sistema kárstico caracterizado
por cayos, colinas, cuevas y ríos subterráneos, que se
extiende 82 kilómetros, de Sabana de la Mar hasta Cevicos, y 26
kilómetros, desde el sur de la Bahía de Samaná hasta Bayaguana.
Los Haitises National Park is a protected area in the northeast
region of the Dominican Republic, which is characterized by
extensive karst development, with numerous cays, hills, caves
and underground rivers. The area of the park is 82 km long,
from Sabana de la Mar until Cevicos, and 26 km wide, from the
South of Bahia de Samaná to Bayaguana.
