Mueller-Schmidt Home of Stone
112 E. Vine
Ph: 620-227-6791
(Built in 1881-oldest Dodge City house on original site)
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
In an 1882 bird’s-eye view of Dodge City, the Mueller-Schmidt House
proudly perched atop a hill northeast of town, alone in its new splendor and
surrounded by a yard planted with trees. Built to be one of the most splendid
homes in Dodge City, Ford County’s “Home of Stone” lives up to this, even
today. It remains the lone limestone house in Dodge City, elegant in its simplicity of line. It can also claim the distinction of being the oldest building
in Dodge City that is still on its original site.
The ‘Home of Stone’ was owned by only 2 families; John Mueller, a boot
maker who came to Dodge City to open a boot store. He became so successful he invested in a saloon and became a cattle rancher. After losing all his
cattle (75,000 head) in a blizzard, and fire destroyed his boot shop, he and
his wife returned to St. Louis.
The home and furnishings were sold to Adam Schmidt in 1890. Adam’s two
unmarried children lived in the home until 1960 and sold it with all its furnishing to Ford County in 1965.The Ford County Historical Society curates
it for the county.
You can still see the parlor, kitchen, bedrooms, and the exterior of the
Mueller-Schmidt House as it was in 1881. Come walk back into history,
standing where the pioneers of the Old West and Dodge City lived.

Surrounding Areas
Big Basin & Jacob’s Well
This interesting feature on the High Plains of Kansas is on U.S. Highway
283 about 40 miles south of Dodge City.
For 1.4 miles, U.S. Highway 283 traverses the floor of
Big Basin, which most likely resulted from salts
dissolving several hundred feet below the earth's
surface and causing subsidence of the earth above it.
In Little Basin, about 0.5 miles to the east, is a spring
known as St. Jacob’s Well. From a distance, the spot
appears to be an oasis of cottonwood trees. It is
surrounded by a fence made of limestone posts and
barbed wire, which keeps the buffalo out and the water clear. A path leads
down to the water's edge from the parking lot on the bluff above.
Tracks indicate the value of permanent water to the wildlife of the
area. This site preserves mixed grass prairie that is rich with wildflowers
during spring. Western meadowlarks and grasshopper sparrows are
common during the nesting period. Collared lizards and six-lined
racerunners sun on exposed rocks. WARNING: No developed
trails. A walk around the roads beginning at the entrance is a 5 mile round
trip. Bison may be grazing in this area - they are wild animals, are highly
unpredictable and should not be approached. It is highly recommended to
drive the trails by car and locate the animals before exiting the car to
walk.

Dalton Gang Hideout
502 S. Pearlette St., Meade, KS
Ph. 620-873-2731; 800-354-2743
www.oldmeadecounty.com/hideout
The Dalton Gang Hideout, for mer ly the
home of Eva Dalton Whipple, sister to the
infamous Dalton Gang is a must see in the
Dodge City Area. Years after the Whipples
left Meade, a deep rain wash covered with
timbers and earth was discovered; a tunnel
from the house to the barn built into the
hillside below. Legend has it the tunnel was
used by the gang to come and go undetected
by the law.
You can still take the eerie trip down the 95-foot-long
tunnel to explore Eva Dalton's house which is furnished as
it would have been in her day. The barn serves as an
entrance to the attraction and houses a gift shop on the
ground floor and museum artifacts in the loft. At the south
end of the Hideout park you will find "Old Town," a wild
west town facade built for the historical reenactments and
gunfight competitions each year during Dalton Days Wild
West Festival. Kids love to pose for photos behind the bars
of the jail or in the old casket propped up on the
undertaker's wall.
Just up the hill from the Hideout barn is the Heritage
House, a wonder ful old home fur nished as it was in the 1890' s. Ther e' s
lots to see and do at the Dalton Gang Hideout...plan to stay awhile!.
Open Mon. -Sat. 9-5, and Sunday 1-5. Admission is $5s$

Dear Hospitality Partner,
T
hank you so much for being a part of the Hospitality Program here in
Dodge City! The chief function of businesses in the hospitality industry is
to serve people -- whether it's food, lodging or a combination of these and
other services. The importance of employee training and development in
hospitality cannot be overstated, because every job ultimately aims for guest satisfaction. Workers in every facet of hospitality, from dishwashers to managers and
owners, affect the guest experience.
Service can be delivered with words and actions, however it only becomes hospitality when it is delivered with genuine caring. Hospitality is not limited to the tangibles of what is being done, but how does the person being served feel the service
has been rendered.
In Dodge City, we know that the happier the guests are that visit and the longer
they stay, the more likely they will become repeat customers for you and for many
others in town. Whether you are assisting your guest with directions to an attraction, information on a current event in town, taking time and listening to the stories
of their travels, or giving them any incentives to return, you are creating an atmosphere of hospitality which Kansans are famous for!
It is our hope at the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) that this book will assist
you with making visitor information available at your fingertips for all of your
guests. We provide you with hospitality information, brochures, event fliers and
other information at no cost to your business or your guest. The CVB will periodically have hospitality seminars (also at no cost to you) throughout the year, so
watch for more information. Please call us at (620) 225-8186 for any materials you
need. We also assist meeting organizers with contact information, a group liaison,
sample itineraries, welcome packets, and trolley services.
We look forward to working with each and every one of you! Thank you so much
for helping everyone to “Get The Heck Into Dodge!”
