Napanee’s early settlement was driven by mills
established at Springside Falls on the Napanee River
and its access to the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario.
The town quickly grew on the success of lumbering,
shipping, manufacturing and agriculture. It’s core
area reflects this prosperity in the well-preserved
Victorian-era streetscapes.

will find the L&A County Museum & Archives. The
impressive limestone building features rotating
exhibits, a large research room, artefacts, and
regular events that help tell the unique story of

Built in 1826, it was the first private home north of
the Napanee River by Allan Macpherson, one of early
L&A County’s most entrepreneurial and civic-minded
citizens. It has been restored to its 1830’s splendor

Canadian Piano Museum

This striking Italianate-styled mansion was built in
1859 by prominent businessman John Stevenson.
Today it is home to the Canadian Piano Museum
which includes in its collection, a piano made by
Stevenson’s former Kingston-based piano factory.
Stevenson also served as the Speaker of Ontario’s
first legislature.

Greater Napanee’s first settlers arrived in Adolphustown
at what is now the United Empire Loyalist Heritage
Centre & Park. Arriving on June 16, 1784 in a flotilla of
bateaux, settlers drew lots for their homes. Today, the
idyllic 72-acre site hosts the UEL research centre and a
tent/trailer campground with a small beach and wellshaded grounds. It is a hidden gem.

South of Napanee, on Hay Bay’s south shore you’ll
find the Old Hay Bay Church National Historic Site.
The church dates to 1792 and is Canada’s oldest
Methodist building. An annual church service held
in August celebrates its importance within the
United Church community.

Deseronto overlooks the beautiful Bay of Quinte.
Its unique name is of Mohawk origin and honours
United Empire Loyalist Captain John Deserontyon, a
Mohawk Chief. During its heyday, the town was an
industrial powerhouse, producing everything from
trains to terra cotta. Today it has become a popular
antique stop.

Situated along the scenic Loyalist Parkway on Lake
Ontario‘s northern shore you’ll find Bath Village. It
was first settled by United Empire Loyalists in 1784.
It would become an important maritime settlement
with a thriving boat building industry. The 1812
Lafarge Discovery Centre and the annual marine
heritage festivals celebrate this history.

River marks a geologic transition from Canadian
Shield to limestone plain. The village’s history dates
back to the days of lumber camps and log drives.
Today, you will find one of Canada’s most beautiful
garden attractions, just south of the village @

Drive east along County Road 1 to visit the small
towns and villages that were originally established
around mill sites along the Napanee River. As you
explore them, echoes of their bustling past will urge
you to learn more about Ontario’s early settlement
history - the County Museum is an excellent place
to start.

Follow the .75km leisurely accessible waterfront
trail from Springside Park - site of the area’s first
lumber mill - to Conservation Park. Popular park
with seating area adjacent to waterfalls. Gardens
maintained by volunteers. Kiosk and plaques
highlight local history.

Country Jamboree. Popular oval grassy track
used by walkers and people walking their
dogs. Children’s playground. Baseball diamond.

Loyalist Parkway

The scenic Loyalist Parkway provides a leisurely
tour along the Lake Ontario shoreline in Lennox &
Addington County. The complete route honours the
region’s United Empire Loyalist heritage with the
parkway running from Amherstview west through
Prince Edward County to Trenton. During springtime
enjoy lovely lilac displays along the parkway route.
