Makahu Run Dec 27th 2014
A great turn out of 15 vehicles for this day out the
back of Stratford.
1
Four Wheel Drive Event Whangamomona 25th Jan 2015
!
Sixteen Vehicles meet the day after republic day with a few bleary eyed passengers in tow. We headed
out to the back of Whangamomona on a round trip through untouched virgin bush, cliff tops, remote
farms and rugged narrow country tracks rarely seen or driven.
Inland, more towards Mt Ruapehu than Mt Taranaki. The
sign at the start of the Whangamomona road ominously
read “Warning dangerous roads ahead”.
!
!
!
We faced a few challenges on the way including
extremely steep inclines, 3plus point sharp bends,
narrow bridges, swamps, deep ruts and clay mud baths a
few got stuck in and needed a tow.
It was pretty petrifying driving along some of the
cliff tops when you look down to see this tiny
river miles away and your wheels are barely on
the road. It felt like an African safari at times
with the dust clouds that blew up blocking out
visibility.

Some cars thermometers read 40-50 degrees!
We were all so hot we stripped off and
jumped in the Whangamomona river to cool
off.
!
As well as the fun 4WD stuff the highlights
for me were visiting historic sites along the
way like the bridge to somewhere and the
isolated bush areas like the Aotuhi Station
where people strived years ago farming. One
site still had the front door step and sheep
dipping bath intact.
!
We also had lunch at the Aotuhia shearers
quarters.
And the cherry on the cake was stopping at the
Whangamomona pub after a hot day on the
way home for a nice cold bevy and a chat
about the day.
!
It was a fantastic trip, with an awesome group
of people, thoroughly enjoyed the company
and the adventure.

Paddock to Podium
by Max Rutherford
I ask for your help to introduce my book to
your members who could well be interested
in my career. (see image attached)
!
The book is full of back ground stories of
Formula One in the 1960’s with personal
insights to the great drivers and teams of
the time.
!
Jackie Stewart, Jack Brabham, Stirling
Moss, Denny Hulme, Frank Gardner. I
worked on building and preparing cars for
all those drivers and was a close friend to
others like Frank Williams and Bruce
McLaren. My final job was as personal
mechanic to Jackie Stewart when he won
his first World Championship in 1969.
!
Formula One then was dangerous yet
exciting as motor racing entered the modern
age and ‘Gentleman Drivers’ gave way to
professionalism. A great time to have been
involved.
More of the book covers my early days with
go-karts and hill climbing and my later years
restoring vintage road and racing cars plus
developing and selling around the world,
women’s chest protectors for sport. Yes, I have had an interesting life!!
Foreword by Sir Jackie Stewart OBE.
