The Legend continues
Long ago, before the days of gigantic Muffins & Bottomless coffee, there was Clement Mugg & Joshua Bean,
two men who dreamed big. Mates & Buddies they weren’t. As a matter of fact, they were sworn enemies, with Clement a
firm supporter of the Union, and Joshua a proud Confederate.
Not long after the last cannon was fired and the American (un)Civil War was declared over, both Mugg & Bean turned their
back on their beloved homelands and headed west. Little did they know they were destined for a successful future in
Meals & Beverages. Their paths crossed while boarding at the same house in San Francisco, and in 1865, after a light
supper of Mash & Bangers, they lifted their bourbon glasses and toasted to bringing their dream of
Mugg & Bean General Merchants to life.
Contrary to the exploitative business practices of the time, Mugg & Bean ensured their company stood for quality and
excellence, both in customer service and their goods. They wanted to be seen as businessmen of integrity,
who valued their customers, associates and greater the community. They believed innovation was the future, and therefore
embraced every new opportunity. Personally, they both displayed a generosity of spirit, which grew to legendary
proportions as their business flourished. Soon, Mugg & Bean General Merchants was the place where everyone felt at home,
a place that brought people together: friends & foes, Mates & Bru’s, women & children, housewives & businessmen;
Mothers & Bikers; as well as Unionists & Confederates. It was a place where all were welcome.
So, every time you visit Mugg & Bean to soak up the Magic & Buzz, rest assured that we still continue to uphold these
timeless visions and values that Clement Mugg & Joshua Bean established all those years ago.
