It is first and foremost the students.
Grinnell students don't just come
from every state in the United States,
they also come from over 50 different
countries. A full 15 percent of Grinnell
students were born or raised abroad.
As a result, the daily interactions

Located in Grinnell, Iowa, (population
9,200), our small-town site provides a
uniquely intimate setting that allows

Our 1,600 undergraduates come
with varied geographic, ethnic,
racial, religious, and socioeconomic
experiences, but thanks to their
passion, intellectual curiosity, and
lively interest in the world and each
other, they form an incredibly closeknit community. Our beautiful 120acre campus is alive with student
clubs, intercollegiate and intramural
athletic teams, music, theatre, and art

Academics:
A Liberating Education
As a liberal arts college, Grinnell encourages
students to take courses from across the academic
curriculum, not just within one subject or area
of study. At Grinnell, you'll get the chance to
expand your interests in an environment that
encourages broad, interdisciplinary learning.
Your academic adviser (a faculty member) will
help you choose courses from a variety of topics
and areas to develop a well-rounded curriculum,
while still being able to pursue an area of interest
in depth. This diversity of study will help you
unlock unknown interests, talents, and passions
within yourself, and it prepares you for the
lifelong pursuit of learning. You will graduate

INDIVIDUALLY ADVISED
CURRICULUM
Only a handful of colleges in the
country give you the freedom to
design your own academic program.
At Grinnell, there are no general
education requirements, which
might typically account for at least
one-third of your total coursework
at most other liberal arts colleges.
The only required course is the FirstYear Tutorial, an interactive, topicsbased seminar course, limited to just
13 students. Each tutorial professor
also serves as adviser to the tutorial
students until they declare a major,
offering guidance based on personal
knowledge of their academic interests,
aptitudes, and needs.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
You will be challenged here, in the
best of ways. Professors will expect
thorough research, thoughtful
analysis, and creative thinking.
You'll be responsible for co-creating
your curriculum with your adviser,
and you'll find your voice in a selfgoverning residential community.
You will be an active participant in
small, discussion-oriented classes,
labs, and student clubs, learning
as much from your peers as from
your professors in a 24/7 learning
environment.
RESEARCH
You will find abundant opportunities
for undergraduate research at
Grinnell, and taking advantage
of these opportunities will make
you a stronger candidate for all of
your future pursuits, academically
and professionally. In Grinnell’s
Mentored Advanced Project (MAP)
program, you’ll work closely with
a faculty member on a research or
creative project that builds on the
knowledge and skills you’ve gained at
Grinnell. Many MAPs result in papers,
presentations, performances, and
exhibits that share the results of the
project regionally, nationally — even
internationally.

We are all Grinnellians:
A Community Open to All
While our students come with diverse life
experiences, they share a common set of
principles: a commitment to learning, respect
for others and oneself, a desire to contribute to
the common good, a willingness to collaborate,
and the courage to try.
At Grinnell, students are empowered to take an
active and influential role in shaping campus
policy and even distribute College funds to
support a variety of student initiatives, clubs,
and campus events. Grinnell has never had
fraternities or sororities; social events are
open to all members of the College. And while
academic life is rigorous, Grinnell's culture
fosters mutual support rather than competition.
SELF-GOVERNANCE
Those engaged in a liberal arts education
create a community based on freedom
of choice. By making individual choices,
students meet the challenges of a rigorous
academic and rich out-of-classroom
experience. Grinnell's unique system of selfgovernance encourages students to become
responsible, respectful, and accountable
members of the campus, town, and global
community. Students provide input and
make changes in almost every area of College
life, and no student is assigned the duty of
policing his or her peers. Our students sum it
up best: "Self-gov is Love!"

HOME AWAY FROM HOME
We’re a residential college, so you’ll be
spending a lot of time living with and
getting to know other Grinnellians. Our
residence halls are grouped on three
sides: North Campus, South Campus, and
East Campus. The residence halls all have
their own quirks and bonuses, but all have
spacious lounges, wi-fi access, laundry
facilities, computer rooms, kitchens, and
custodial services. You can also join project houses (e.g., Eco
House) and language houses, located in
historic homes near campus. If you’re not
living on campus, you’re likely studying

Grinnell is a place where students
take advantage of every opportunity
they have, whether it’s attending
one of the 500-plus free annual
events, performances, or symposia,

giving back with skill-enhancing

Grinnell leadership respects

Our leadership does not work in
a vacuum. Grinnell has a wellearned reputation for open,
transparent, respectful discussions
about campus issues. Town hall

The Student Government Association

INTERNSHIPS
Grinnell College makes available
more than $280,000 in funding
for internship opportunities.
Grinnell also helps students find
opportunities that suit their
interests, whether those internships
are related to academics, social
justice, or career pursuits. Grinnell
students pursue internships both in
the United States and abroad, with
recent internship sites including
the American Consulate General
in Shanghai, Deutsche Bank in
Washington, D.C., Google and the
Whitney Museum of American Art in
New York City.
CENTER FOR CAREERS,
LIFE, AND SERVICE
Grinnell’s Center for Careers, Life,
and Service (CLS) is committed to
providing Grinnellians — both
current students and alumni — with
all of the support and guidance
they need to pursue postgraduate
success. You’ll work with the CLS to
identify externship, internship, and
job opportunities that will hone
your professional skills and help you
decide what you’ll do after Grinnell.
If you’re interested in graduate
school, participating in service work
through organizations such as the
Peace Corps, or winning a coveted
fellowship such as the Fulbright or
Watson, the CLS will offer you full
support through the application

OFF-CAMPUS STUDY
More than 55 percent of Grinnell
students spend a semester or a year
in a wide range of carefully selected
off-campus study programs in the
United States and abroad. Grinnell
offers two of its own off-campus
study programs, Grinnell-in-London
and Grinnell-in-Washington,
but also has strong partnerships
with programs on virtually every
continent. Whatever your interests,
you can broaden and deepen your
