OAKLAND UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Athletic Field Renovations, Oakland The Oakland Unified School District retained Verde Design for design work on the athletic facilities at three District schools. Madison Middle School For Madison Middle School, Verde turned a vacant lot adjacent to the school in to a synthetic turf multi-purpose field with a decomposed granite running track. At the adjacent Sobrante Park, the natural turf area was regraded and new turf and irrigations systems were installed. McClymonds High School In addition to Madison Middle School’s renovation, the stadium field at McClymonds High School was reconstructed to replace the natural grass playing surface with infill synthetic turf. The project also provided new improvements to the track and field events, including drainage improvements. Cosmetic and safety enhancements were made to the bleachers. The grading for this project was designed so that no soil off-haul was required, saving the District the costs associated with removing excess soil. Skyline High School Skyline High School in Oakland also had a project that included more than 4,000 feet of fire lane reconstruction, removal and replacement of the existing synthetic turf field and resurfacing of the existing all-weather track. It was completed on time and on budget. The owner added significant scope after construction had started (tennis courts, scoreboard, existing parking lot repairs, etc.) and were all able to be completed before the start of school. The existing tennis courts were un-playable. We removed four existing courts and reconstructed from sub grade up. We then replaced with three full size courts with new net posts and surfacing. The existing synthetic turf was installed over an elayer that had settled and was damaged by removal of the existing turf. We were able to use the all-weather surface installer to achieve the necessary repairs for true field planarity without delay to the project.
