Dear Parents & Guardians,
There will be some changes in our staffing next year. As a start, we would like to welcome Mme Désirée Dallaire
who will be joining our staff in September. Mme Dallaire is currently teaching at l’École des Deux Mondes and will
be transferring to our school. Bienvenue Mme Dallaire!
At the end of the month, we will say goodbye to our French Language Monitor, Maude Nicolau who has been with
us since January. Mme Maude did a great job of encouraging our students to improve their oral skills and it was a
pleasure to have her at our school. Bonne chance l’année prochaine!
In March, we sent an application to become a BC WILD School and we have been accepted. WILD BC is a program that will provide us with instructional strategies and resources to support environmental learning in and about
nature. We did spend one professional day in February learning about outdoor education and have since spent more
time exploring our local resources. This is an important component of the new curriculum and we are excited to
continue to grow in that area.
Two of our classes, Mme Baikie’s and Mme Johnstone’s have planted our garden with the help and support of
Ryan Neil who is also collecting our compost. Please come and take a look at our garden in the inner courtyard in the
back of the school. We will leave the doors open before and after school if you would like to take a peek.
You may also have noticed that one of the benches by the primary playground is getting transformed. That
bench is about to become a “buddy bench”, that is a “go to” spot for lonely kids seeking a friend. This is a PAC initiative and we were fortunate to have our Aboriginal Support Worker Shana Smith, offer to paint and decorate the
bench with two of our students, Kate C and Elliot. Please see the photos in this newsletter. Gilakas’la Shana, Kate
and Elliot!
Students are currently working on the Concours d’art oratoire (Public Speaking Contest) which takes place in all
the classes. While older students prepare a speech, younger students learn a poem which they present to their
class. Teachers will select two students from each class based on specific criteria such as, pronunciation, voice projection, fluidity, etc. Those students will then present at a school-wide assembly on Friday, May 13th at 8:45 am.
Parents are invited to attend that assembly.
Other activities this month include:
-French Drama Workshops
-An Aboriginal Story Teller Presentations
-Gr. 3 Swim to Survive lessons
-Gr. 12 French Immersion Celebration on May 27
Please check our calendar at the end of the newsletter for a list of all the events.
Sincerely,
Louise Guèvremont, Teena Campbell & Rachel Black

displaced. Ecole Willow Point will be accepting donations beginning Monday May 9th, continuing until May 20th. Barb Izzard from Timberline will
be collecting the donations and submitting to the Red Cross, with the
whole District’s contributions. The federal government has agreed to

3 sessions per week on Tuesday, Thursday and
Friday from 12:50-2 pm.

"Music Newsflash!
From May 24-26 it is going to be Talent Week in all of our music classes! This means
that students may prepare and perform a song/piece/dance for the class. They are wel-
come to bring their instruments and music from home into the class if they wish
(ukulele, recorder, violin etc.) in order to perform their selection. Please note that this
is optional, and regular class resumes after the performances. It is also a good idea for
students to label any instruments or music books that they bring in to the school. We
look forward to hearing our students' many talents!"
LIBRARY BOOKS
Please ensure that library books are returned in a timely fashion. Always by the due
date or as soon as you are finished with the book and the day before your library day if
possible.

Free Summer Course for Immersion students entering grades1-5
FRENCH CAMP
Students who have strong oral language skills are more likely to become
successful with reading and writing.
Admission and Length: Free through School District 72, 4 hours a day
for 2 weeks (two sessions will be offered but you can only register for one of
the sessions). You can register online at www.sd72.bc.ca after May 4th or you
can register in person at the summer school Open House on Wednesday,
May 4th from 6 to 8pm at Phoenix Middle School.
Objective: This course is designed to provide French Immersion students
with more opportunities to develop their French oral language while improving confidence and interpersonal skills through games, cooperative and
physical activities, outdoor education, and through the arts.
General Overview of the Course:
Children will be challenged to speak only French during the program. Children will be spending the majority of their time outdoors, participating in outdoor education activities and science. As a final goal the class will be working towards presenting a final play. This multi-age grouping will encourage
older children to act as role models and mentors. Meanwhile, the younger
students will be challenged with this new opportunity to engage in French
conversations with their older peers.
Taught by: Désirée Dallaire, French Immersion teacher at EDM. Feel free to
ask me any questions! You can email me at [email protected]
