roof design element. With main offices adjacent to the new entry, the school enjoys
greater security and better welcomes visitors to the middle school facilities.
Phase Two of the Carman-Ainsworth Middle School included a new auxiliary gym and
locker rooms, and major athletic facility improvements. The most creative aspect of the
project was the conversion of the existing linear seventh and eighth grade classroom
plan into new classroom clusters by creating a central corridor with design elements
mimicking the new sixth grade addition. The new corridor created six small interior
landscaped courtyards that preserved the desire for natural daylighting at all classrooms
as well as created adjacent locker alcoves for clustered student gathering areas.
