PASTOR'S CORNER
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This Sunday’s Gospel begins with an interesting statement and response.
John and the other Apostles thought they were doing the right thing by
preventing a non-Apostle from driving out demons. Jesus responded, “Do
not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name
who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is
for us. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong
to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.” (Mark 9:38-48)
Even in the early Church there were many different approaches to
spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. The approach of St. Paul was
different from that of St. Peter. Yet both were effective each in their own
way. The fact that we have four Gospels and not just one uniform edition
showed that what worked in the community of St. Mark needed a different
approach in the community of Saint Luke.
Yes, Matthew, Mark, and Luke look similar, the core message was the same:
“proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ,” but each had to express the
message to a different community with different cultures and problems.
The Gospel of St. John is very different from the other three Gospels yet the
message is the same as presented in John 20:30-31, “Now Jesus did signs
in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these
are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the
Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.”
The Gospel authors (also known as Evangelists) wanted those who read
their Gospels to fall as deeply in love with our Lord Jesus Christ as they had.
PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE ABx2-15
Governor Brown Must Decide by September 28!
Now is the time to e-mail Governor Jerry Brown and ask him to VETO
assisted suicide! E-mail Governor Jerry Brown directly by visiting https://
govnews.ca.gov/gov39mail/mail.php. You will be asked to give your name
and e-mail address. Under "Please choose your subject" scroll down near
the bottom to "X2AB00015\End of Life" and make that selection. We also
encourage you to check the box asking for a reply. Be polite, concise
and thoughtful in your e-mail. Ask Governor Brown to help protect
the vulnerable, those without access to needed healthcare, and people
living with serious disease and disability that the system already views
as having an expiration date. Or, take action now at www.cacatholic.org.
WORLD MEETING of
FAMILIES PRAYER
God and Father of us all, in
Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
you have made us your sons
and daughters in the family of
the Church.
May your grace and love help
our families in every part of the
world be united to one another
in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy
Family, with the aid of your
Holy Spirit, guide all families,
especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and
prayer and to always seek your
truth and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord,
Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
pray for us!

BLOOD DRIVE
Friday, October 23
12:30–6:30 p.m.
Parish Hall
The need for blood will never
end. Every two seconds some
one in the United States needs
blood. Yet blood cannot be
manufactured; it must be given
by volunteer donors. Because
blood has a limited shelf life,
the community blood supply
must constantly be replenished
to meet patients’ needs. Blood
donors make a life-saving
contribution by giving blood.
Sign up behind the church near
the parking lot on Sundays,
October 11 and 18 or call for an
appointment: Irene Scalise, 8408571 or Lynn, 846-3359x478.

"What Jamaica Taught Me
About Respect for Life"
7:15 p.m. Parish Hall
Deacon Joe will help us kick-off
Respect Life Month by sharing
memories of his visits with the Missionaries
of the Poor in Jamaica. Working alongside the
Missionaries as they joyfully served people
abandoned by their families due to disabilities
or poverty, Deacon Joe came to a new
understanding of the dignity of every human
person. Come hear some great stories, see some
photos, and ask some questions. Refreshments
provided. Regular Men's Club business meeting
follows at 8:00. Please join us!

harvesting and selling body parts from aborted
babies. Come hear how HPC ministers to women
and babies and cherishes them both as children of
God. HPC will have its new mobile clinic for us
to tour so we can see how ultrasound technology
is one of the key weapons in the battle against the
ignorance which leads to abortion.
Thursday, October 29
Dr. Vincent Nguyen
"Death and Dignity and
The Gift of Palliative Care"
7:00 p.m. Parish Hall
After nearly 25 years of efforts
in California to afford terminally
ill patients the right to end their
lives with a doctor's help, state lawmakers and
the governor may be on the verge of granting
the dying that authority. Dr. Vincent Nguyen
will present his views on the immorality of this
choice and the moral options we can take that
are aligned with God's will for our lives from
conception until natural death. A question and
answer period will follow. Refreshments served.
