GREETING:
The Ides of March is upon us.
Did someone shoot the groundhog yet? Man! It is a long cold winter and March madness has a
whole new meaning. My cousin Nan in Fairbanks has consistently been warmer than me for the last two
weeks!! That is not fair. Enough whining. I want to let everyone know we are having some wonderful educational sessions coming up for Emergencies and Back-Up plan preparation. See the Link article for particulars.
Also coming, is more on Shared Housing in Pike County. Stay tuned as we roll out this housing option locally.
April 28th will be our training for local clergy and volunteers: “Recognizing & Reporting Elder Abuse In
Our Community”. This will be held at the 911 training facility and is free of charge. Call Robin or Jim for more
information.
Are you getting ready for Spring cleaning? We are having a bazaar on May 16th here at Blooming
Grove Senior Center site. This is an outside and inside event, and is rain or shine. We will have vendors,
food, and plenty of fun. Please call soon for a table as space is going quickly. Price for tables is $20.00 and
inside is $5.00 additional.
Our budget is coming into the twilight of the fiscal year. We have received funds for home modification and our caregiver program. So far we have dozens of people who are assisted with consumer reimbursement for their caregiver costs and time. We are fortunate to have these programs. Our home delivered
meal program is now serving over 196 consumers. These meals have a food cost of $3.98 per meal, plus
packing & transportation. Our donations are down to less than $.40 per meal. We need these donations for
the program. Please remember that our donations are stretched as far as we can to keep the program going.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
We have served over 30 families with fuel assistance this winter and do have some funds
left for those who are ineligible for LIHEAP fuel assistance.
March is nutrition month,
"Bite into a healthy lifestyle.” There are three basic components of this theme:
1. Consuming fewer calories
2. Making informed food choices
3. Getting daily exercise
Please join us in March for engaging discussion with nutrition professionals about this topic. We will have
special events and games for those who want to challenge their fellow diners. See the center calendars for
days of these events.
We are also rolling out our changes with regard to the nutrition program this month. This includes providing
more education about the foods you are consuming, providing cost information for your meal, and providing
choice in the menu components. The menu that is served in our senior centers is constructed and planned to
meet 1/3 daily recommended allowance for older Pennsylvanians. Based on a food-based menu plan, we
are moving towards addressing the carbohydrates in the foods based on the standard of care in diabetes
where carbs are suggested to be between 45 and 75 grams at each meal. Include more potassium-rich
foods because of the positive effect it has on health, and striving to limit calories per meal to 750 kcal. Please
feel free to request the meal nutrition you are consuming.
Our take out policy includes only those foods which are shelf stable or wrapped for food safety. Please do
not bring your own containers for take-out foods. The Pike County Area Agency on Aging is not responsible
for those foods removed from the premises and consumed at a later time.

BIRTHDAY’S CELEBRATED!
We’re back to celebrating Birthday’s again. Here’s to our January Birthday’s. Upper left are our Milford
group. Lots of Birthday’s there! To the upper right site manager Cherie Bland helps Bernice Wahnon &
Barbara O’Brien blow out their candles. Going forward we will have Birthday celebrations at Blooming
Grove on the last Thursday of the month and Milford will celebrate on the last Friday of the month.
Happy Birthday all, and many more to follow!
This winter is not giving up easily, hopefully everyone is staying warm. Our
senior warming centers are a good place to spend the day if you should need
to keep warm. The Blooming Grove Senior Center is open from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you drive you can spend the day. Our
Lackawaxen / Shohola Center is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
9a.m. to 2p.m., Dingmans Tuesdays and Fridays 9a.m. to 3p.m. and last but not
least our Milford Center, Wednesday’s and Friday’s 10a.m. to 3p.m. For those
who don’t drive Pike County Transportation brings people in to the centers on different days and
returns them home, their number is 570-296-3408 or 1-866-681-4947. Although you may not be
able to spend all day at least you will get a couple of hours of warmth and socialization, along with a
hot meal. Since mother nature has chosen to bring us so many challenges both the past summer
and this winter we have decided to again address the topic of Emergency Preparedness. We are
planning a presentation by two very knowledgeable gentlemen from the Pike County Training Center on Tuesday April 14, 2015. Further details will be announced in a flyer which will be distributed
both by hand, e-mail and on our website. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to
call or e-mail me. Barbara Leary, Admin. Officer, Link point of contact for Pike County.

PET ROCK ART & CRAFT PROJECT—
ROCKIN’ AT BLOOMING GROVE
On March 26. at 12 noon, Let’s Rock!! Are you
ready to rock? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Sure,
people have been painting rocks for thousands of years (ever
heard of cave paintings?), but you’ve never seen rock art like
this before. Each rock is unique. It is your rock & what’s
more, it’s as unique as you are! Yep, that’s right –your rock
is 100% original, not another one like it. So which project
should you use your rock for? That all depends on your
imagination! Take a moment & give your rock a good hard
look-now, what does it look like to you? Is it shaped like a
car? A bug, A spaceship? An egg? You decide. Use your
rock for one of the many rockin’ projects you can dream up
on your on, it’s all up to you. With a little paint (& a little
imagination), you can transform your rock into anything you
like or learn to teach your children or grandchildren about
rockin’. Ned a Pet, try a Pet Rock. Learn more. Looking forward to seeing you, our Teachers will be
Joanne & Bruce Kirkpatrick. Bring your own rock or we will
have some on hand for you.
