METROLINK FOR DROYLSDEN IN FEBRUARY
M
etrolink will
finally be seen
carrying passengers into
Droylsden for the first
time in February 2013.
Subject to successful
testing and driver
training the trams are
set to pull into the
Concord Suite from the
11 February onwards.
Journeys to Piccadilly will
take around 20 minutes,
with one tram running
every 12 minutes.
On the same day eight new
stops will open: New Islington,
Holt Town, Etihad Campus,
Velopark, Clayton Hall, Edge
Lane and Cemetery Road before
terminating in Droylsden.
Council Executive Leader,
Cllr Kieran Quinn, who is also a
Droylsden councillor said:
“That we have had to wait so long
for this has been a source of deep
frustration for me and the local
community. We have experienced
firsthand the disruption and impact
of the work involved in building the
new line – only to have to suffer
delays time and again.
“I am told the cause of the delays
has been the integration of the
new line with the existing network
which has now been resolved with
Transport for Greater Manchester’s
help.”
GET READY FOR WINTER
It’s dark, its cold and it’s a time
of year that can bring misery to
many households with burst pipes,
burglaries, insufficient heat and
boiler breakdowns! Of course you
can’t prevent everything but here’s
a few tips to help you protect
yourself and your home over
the winter!
Leave a light on!
Always a good deterrent to potential
burglars if they think your home is
occupied. If you haven’t got a timer
leaving a small lamp or light on with
an energy efficient bulb is always a safe
bet. Even better, its worth investing in
an alarm system for further piece of
mind!
Frozen Pipes
Freezing pipes are a nightmare for
any homeowner who lives in a region
cold enough to freeze regularly. In
particularly cold areas, buy pipe foam
to place around any pipes that are not
protected by your home’s insulation.
If you are a pensioner ask a friend or
4 About Tameside
neighbour to help. Make sure that you
know where your stop tap is, and that
it works so that you can turn off the
water supply if needed
Losing Heat
No matter where you live, you want
to make sure that the money you’re
paying to keep your house warm isn’t
just flying out of the window. Check
that your doors and windows are
insulated properly and if you don’t
have loft insulation heat will just be lost
through your roof! You can buy self
adhesive foam tape that can help with
some seals ! There are also several
schemes offering free loft and cavity
wall insulation to certain groups.
Get your heating serviced
No matter what type of heating
system you’ll be relying on this winter
(furnace, wood stove, boiler, heat
pump, etc.), it’s important to have your
system cleaned and serviced. This will
maximise its efficiency and ensure
you get the most out of your heating
system.
TFGM will be handing residents
and schoolchildren in the
Droylsden area free three-day
passes for the East Manchester
line for use prior to its official
launch as a thank you for their
patience over the delays.
Households in Droylsden will
receive more details close to
the time.
Cllr Quinn added: “I know
this has been a testing time for
Droylsden residents, but we can
now see the finishing line. As
disappointing as it has been to see
this project arrive behind schedule,
there is no doubt that the arrival
of Metrolink to Droylsden will be a
massive boost for the people and
businesses in the area.”

and we wanted to share some festive cheer with the abandoned

YOUR M&S MOVES!
This had no impact on the shoppers
that come to buy food, clothing
and gifts from the branch located
in the former headquarters of the
Ashton Reporter! Marks & Spencer
have always had a strong history
being part of the town since humble
beginnings inside the Market Hall.
Current store on Warrington Street
T
he decision for Marks
& Spencer to leave the
town centre in Ashtonunder-Lyne was a shock
for traders when it was
announced in 2011. The
store had been an iconic
destination for shoppers in
the area for over 40 years
and had certainly generated
additional trade for both the
Market Hall and the town’s
independent traders.
A key High Street brand, Marks &
Spencer had just the main store in
Ashton until the opening of their
outlet at Crown Point in Denton.
on tables and the “Admission Free”
sign outside encouraged people
to browse, a marked contrast
with most shops at the time, in
which customers had to ask the
shopkeeper for goods stored behind
the counter. The Bazaar closed on
18th May 1929.
Penny Bazaar in Ashton Market Hall
The Penny Bazaar opened on 20th
January 1894 in Ashton Market Hall
with an area covering 370 square
feet. Stalls 10 and 12 were rented
at a price of nine shillings and six
pence a week. Penny Bazaars were
not the food-and-clothing chain
stores commonplace today, but sold
a range of items such as sewing
equipment, biscuits and sheet music.
M&S Penny Bazaars retained the
policy used by Michael Marks in
his original market stall in Leeds
of selling almost everything for
one penny, apart from a few luxury
items. The open displays of items
Warrington Street store opened in 1969
A store opened on 17th September
1969 at 53 Warrington Street,
with an area of 15,600 square feet.
The first floor was opened on
18th October 1977 adding 12,000
square feet to the store area.
Ashton has been proud to have M
& S at the heart of its retail and
over the coming months it will be
interesting to see what impact the
relocation will have on the town
centre. Of course, the good news
is that Marks & Spencer are staying
in Ashton, with new premises
alongside Sainsbury’s
which opens later
in January after the
current store ceases
trading. This new
store begins another
chapter but perhaps
it will be almost
impossible to capture
the atmosphere of
the old premises
when shoppers
walk through the
doors. Let us hope
those loyal shoppers
will also continue
shopping in the town
centre and a new
retailer takes on the
old site very quickly.

About Tameside 9
FAMILY DRIVEN
E
arly last year BBC
2 viewers found
themselves enthralled
by the documentary
series ‘The Fixer’
starring Alex Polizzi.
Perhaps one of the
most memorable
episodes from the series
featured Guide Bridge
MOT & Service Centre
managed by Jan and
Derek Lord, along with
their children Gareth,
Nicola and Adam.
Even though it seemed
uncomfortable viewing
at times, the outcome
seemed to have a very
positive impact on the
business. But how did
this Tameside garage
get involved? We asked
Jan…
Jan
“The initial introduction came
from the Chamber of Commerce
asking for local family businesses
to provide information to a TV
channel. After sending a short
paragraph introducing us it
“Yes. It was quite stressful.They
shot over 140 hours of footage
in total and that was edited
to just 57 minutes, so we had
absolutely no idea what would
be in the show.The producers
phoned us on the day the show
was being aired to warn us that
the first 15-20 minutes might
be uncomfortable viewing, but
the last 45minutes would be
positive.”We all watched the
show together and made a
celebration of it.
snowballed very quickly from
there on. Having six family
members working together they
really wanted us onboard for the
first series.
Had the filming itself
been disruptive for the
team?
“Very disruptive, but very
enjoyable,” agreed Jan, “the
first day they just followed us
around getting to know us, and
us getting to know the camera.
Initially we thought it would be
a few months before we started
filming but in reality we had
the weekend! So we didn’t have
much time to think about it, we
were thrown in at the deep end.
Our environment is noisy as you
can imagine - having to stop the
mechanics from working so the
noise didn’t affect the filming was
an issue, but we always worked
late so that our customers
weren’t affected and the day’s
work always got finished. Our
customers loved it, and some of
them took part, although not all
of them got to the big screen.
Sometimes, seeing the
final edited version of
a programme like this
can leave a nasty taste
in the mouth. Did you
have any regrets getting
involved?
Did you get a lot of feed
back once it was aired?
“Absolutely, no regrets, and [we]
would do it all again. We missed
them when they weren’t around.
The film crew had become part
of Guide Bridge and when it
was all finished, it seemed very
normal! I think what came out
of the programme is that we are
a strong family business and a
caring family unit; we are all in
it for the same thing - the end
result is the customer goes away
happy. It was also great to work
with Alex, she comes from a long
line of family businesses including
the Forte group and also has
got her own business with her
husband, so she understands the
dynamics that having a family
business is very different than
just working for somebody else
who owns it.”
Was it a stressful
programme to make?
“We had so many messages of
support.We had hundreds of
emails from all over the country
- even from other garages
asking how did we get on the
programme; how did we get over
to fixed priced servicing etc.The
programme has now been shown
in Australia and New Zealand,
and we’ve received messages
from there. It’s been amazing”
It’s been 12 months
since the show aired.
How has the business
changed?
“We all saw the big changes
back in February and as you
would expect we were really busy
for the 5-6 weeks after and then
it tailed off slightly but in our
business we have to measure
the success over a 12month
period and the good news is that
our turnover is still increasing
which in this economic
climate is fantastic
and we are still
growing. It’s all very
positive”.
There have
been a lot of
challenges in
2012, you’ve had
bereavement
in the family
and Nicola your
daughter has
had a baby?
“Yes, Nicola finished in
July to have the baby
and a month later
I went off to nurse
mum so the boys really
had to step up to the
mark. At a time when
things are really tough,
all the team pulled
together.This is one of
the pitfalls of having
a family business.We
arranged it so Nicola
could work from home
10 About Tameside
and the boys together with a
close friend of the business kept
the garage running. It’s at times
like these that you realise how
hard it can be running a family
business but we did it with
little disruption and we had no
downturn in business which is a
credit to those concerned.
Everyone said that I was the
sticking plaster to the business
and that if I wasn’t there things
wouldn’t happen and the
business would fold.The changes
we made whilst doing the show
proved that when I wasn’t there
for three months everything
kept running, so that in itself is
testament that the show well and
truly ‘fixed it for us’.”
are going back to work
to look after the team
in January. What are
your plans and what will
change on your return?
Nicola
So, Nicola, you’ve been
looking after your
baby for the last 6
months and then you
“I’m going back as General
Manager so there are more
changes to come. Our customers
and the way we do things are
my priority and there is always
room for improvement, I embrace
change. I want every customer
who comes through the door to
feel special; to go away telling
everyone else how good we
are. That is the best advert we
can have,” says Nicola “We are
working on a full re-brand, we
have a new website ready to
be launched and we have some
great professional business
coaching from a company who
specialises in the motor trade,
so we still have more room for
improvement.”
Where would you like
he business to go this
year? Nicola smiles, it’s
obviously a very easy
answer.
“To be the best garage in
Tameside and to make it bigger
and better than ever before.”

CHRISTMAS
WISH FOR HILDA
Droylsden residents couldn’t believe their eyes when the familiar
red illuminated Coca Cola truck rolled along Sunnyside Road
on 3rd December. The visit was specially arranged for resident
Hilda Whitworth who is suffering terminal cancer of the lungs
and spine. Friends and family worked hard to arrange the special
visit to make this Christmas the best yet. In December 2011 the
family took her to New York to see the truck as it passed the
famous Macy’s store and Hilda herself adores seeing it “You just
know Christmas is here when the truck is on television” Hilda
sings the ‘Holidays are coming’ tune before adding “This has
made it so special for me this year!”

LYMPHOEDEMA CLINIC
As a result of increasing success rates in
modern methods of cancer treatment,
more and more patients are finding
themselves in need of lymphoedema
therapy and care.
There are estimated to be a hundred
thousand people living with chronic
oedema in the UK.The number is growing
as more and more people survive cancer
for longer without a lymphatic system which leaves them vulnerable to painful
swelling and serious infection.
One person who knows this better
than anyone is Brid Hindley, who has
been a physiotherapist at the Hospice
for more than eight years. She has been
successful in establishing a lymphoedema
clinic at the Hospice - a joint venture
between Stalybridge Clinic and Willow
Wood Hospice. The service has been
commissioned by the Primary Health
Care Trust.
“We have been pushing for a
lymphoedema clinic since Willow
Wood first opened” said Brid, who
is a key worker in the treatment of
lymphoedema. “We’ll have two clinics
here and two in Stalybridge. These clinics
are going to make a huge difference to
quality of life for those people suffering
from lymphoedema. Some people have
been living with this condition for a long
time and it will be good for them to
know that they are not on their own.”
“Lymphoedema is a chronic illness that
causes swelling, usually to the legs or
arms.” added Brid. “Socially, it can be
very difficult for some people to live
with, and it can affect their mobility.”
Brid explained there are two types of
lymphoedema - primary and secondary.
Primary lymphoedema occurs because
the lymphatic system has not formed
properly. Secondary lymphoedema
may be caused by cancer or following
treatment. It can occur if the lymph nodes
are blocked with cancer or if they have
been removed by surgery. Radiotherapy
can also cause lymphoedema via a buildup of scar tissue within the lymph nodes,
but not everyone who has radiotherapy
will get lymphoedema.
Treatment at the clinic will include the
application of compression, using multilayer bandages and hosiery, massage to
assist with dispersal of fluid (lymphatic
drainage) and advice on skin care
and exercise. People suffering from
lymphoedema can be referred by their
GP, consultant, specialist nurse or allied
health professional. Initially all referrals
are through the Stalybridge Centre in
writing, or by fax (0161 303 1760).
FREE PARKING APPRECIATED
O
n the run up to
the festive period
Tameside Council
allocated free car
parking in selected car
parks in the borough
which included Ashton,
Stalybridge, Hyde,
Droylsden and Denton.
Ashton’s Ladysmith
Shopping Centre also
joined in with free
parking at their site
during December.
This has been the
first major scheme to
offer Free Parking to
shoppers, building on
the current free after
3pm on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday.
introduced. I hope they’ll be
expanding free parking all day
for key trading days for town
centres.
Andrea Mallinder Toddlin
Deborah Meeks.
The Shubar
Free Parking is a great idea.
It would also be helpful to
have some of the parking
restrictions lifted from some
key areas such as Old Street
and Stamford Street to allow
less abled shoppers better
access to shops.
We asked some businesses
in Ashton-under-Lyne their
views on the council’s
initiative.
Free parking is a good idea.
Suspending restrictions
too would be helpful, we
serve the pregnant ladies of
Tameside it makes it much
easier for them to pull up
outside the shop to collect
their prams and furniture
without being harassed by
parking attendants, But the
December free parking has
appeared to make the shop a
bit busier .
So overall a very positive
response to Free Parking but
moving forward it seems further
initiatives like this will definitely
be welcomed by the traders
across Tameside.

HOWZAT FOR CHARITY
Denton Cricket Club have raised over an
incredible £7000 for Cancer Research UK in

The group have been raising money for the charity for
over 5 years and with this years total they have raised
over £25,000. What is even more astounding is the group,
a collection of
former players,
club officials,

T
ameside’s touring pantomime Jack and the
Beanstalk was a roaring success, oh yes it
was! The panto, which toured Ashton, Hyde,
Droylsden, Dukinfield and Mossley played to
packed houses across the borough. Supported by
local dance schools, the professional cast created
just the right atmosphere and it was certainly
fun for all the family. This coming year’s
pantomime has been announced, Cinderella.
A pioneering scheme to save residents money on their
energy bills is coming to Tameside. The original scheme
was piloted in the UK by Oldham and Rochdale councils.
It is hoped that the Greater Manchester scheme will
see thousands of Tameside residents benefit by using the
collective purchasing power of the community scheme.
A new Business Watch has been launched in Denton. Sixty
five tenants at Tameside Business Park have signed up to the
GMP project. Business Watch will see traders working closely

Crime Reduction Specialist to share information and crime
prevention advice.
CALENDAR GETS
ARTISTIC TOUCH
Tameside College Graphics students took on the
challenge of producing an
inspirational image for
the Manchester Women’s Institute’s very first
calendar.
The Manchester WI (Women’s
Institute) wanted their first
calendar to be based on
inspirational women from
Greater
Manchester
and
decided to enlist the help of
Tameside College Graphics
students.
The creative learners were
free to use any design style
they wanted to produce an
original image of the famous
comedienne, actress and writer
In Tameside News
Victoria Wood.The Manchester
WI then selected their favourite
image to be used for one of the
calendar months.
The group gained ‘real life’
experience, working to a live
brief with the opportunity to
achieve recognition for their
artwork. The standard of the
work produced was excellent,
but it was Paige Robinson’s
design that caught the judge’s
attention for clearly capturing
Victoria’s iconic persona.
Paige, studying for a BTEC
Level 3 in Graphics, said “I really
enjoyed creating the digital
illustration of Victoria Wood.
I chose a more iconic picture
of her to base my design on
so that people would connect
and instantly recognise her. It’s
so exciting to have my work
professionally published.”
All proceeds from the
calendar will go directly to
the Manchester WI sponsored
charity, Paws 4 Kids.
Tameside Hospital have released three videos of awardwinning initiatives at the Hospital. Three aspects of the

MEET L A AUSTIN
I
t’s hard to imagine that Ashton is home to one of the UK’s
up and coming wrestling stars in
the shape of Lee Austin. The
27 year old is usually found at
his shop, Rewind Collectables,
in Ashton-under-Lyne and the
amount of wrestling memorabilia
in the shop is probably enough to
reveal his passion for the sport.
“Since I was a little kid I always watched
wrestling with my two brothers and sisters
watching stars like Rey Mysterio and Jeff
Hardy,” said Lee. “ A friend of mine found a
wrestling school and it was something I was
always interested in doing after being a fan..
So we gave the school a try, trained for a
year which led into doing the shows. Once I
got into training I learned more about British
wrestling which is quite big now. There are a
lot of shows around the UK every weekend
and the sport’s big names include Bubblegum,
El Ligero and CJ Banks. 2012 has been my
first year doing proper shows - by that I mean
full matches, not just little appearances and
I’m usually regarded as the good guy. A bit of
a superhero type, wearing bright colours and
always jumping off things”
We asked Lee if there were weights that
wrestlers fight at or were restricted too.
“Not necessarily, its all entertainment at the
end of the day and it’s the fans who drive
16 About Tameside
what they want to see
and particular stars
fighting others. You’ll
always find a storyline
in wrestling to make the
sport more entertaining.”
His hobby is obviously
his passion from the
amount of wrestling
figures at the shop
which also supplies
consoles and video
games.
“ I don’t know what it
is about wrestling, I just
really enjoy doing it; the
adrenalin rush you get
at shows is just so great. This year I’ve been
lucky to have matches with CJ Banks and
Bubblegum who were great to work with
and learn from. The venue where I usually
perform is in Wigan and there’s been no
wrestling in Tameside since the closure of
Tameside Hippodrome. Hopefully if that
re-opens it will give people a chance to see
wrestling in our area.”
There have been occasions when Lee has
been recognised from his wrestling at the
shop which he finds really rewarding.
“You don’t tend to think people follow British
wrestling so it’s great when someone has
seen you at a show, especially when they say
I was pretty good,” he laughs before adding
“people always say the bumps and falls are
fake; it’s not, it hurts. Having
someone land on you
after they’ve jumped
off a 6 foot high corner
post is always going to
be a big impact. It’s part
of the training to make
this look good while not
injuring yourself, or your
opponent.”
So what does the future have in store for
L A Austin?
“ I just want to make a name for myself in
the British scene and continue to entertain
people”
Unfortunately there are no wrestling
schools in Tameside, but Lee himself
trained at Grand Pro Wrestling which is
one of the most successful in the country
based in Beswick..You can find out about
L A Austin’s next appearance by checking
out Facebook or why not call in Rewind

PUTTING THE FUN INTO FUNDRAISING –
THE STORY OF HYDE FUNDRAISERS
H
yde Fundraisers first
came to prominence
back in 1985 when a
group of friends who met
at the Blackpool Dr Who
Exhibition decided to use
their own – home made
– Dr Who characters
and costumes to raise
money for charity. With
the Blackpool Exhibition
closing at that time it
provided an opportunity
for the friends to keep
in touch but also help
various good causes.
At that time it was Kevin
Taylor with his family in Hyde
that initiated the early events
and created the name ‘Hyde
Fundraisers’.
What started out as just a pub
crawl soon developed into street
collections in local towns such
as Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde,
Denton and Oldham. Nigel
Peever was one of the groups
early members who created
some of those characters that
appeared in the 1980’s.. Dalek’s
were obviously one of the
most recognisable characters
from DR WHO and the group
recruited use of a Movie style
made by fan John Ashton
from Openshaw. This really
inspired Hyde Fundraisers to
create their own Daleks, a task
that was undertaken by Andy
Crombie. With such iconic
characters being used by the
group, Hyde Fundraisers found
themselves a popular attraction
whenever they appeared at
their fundraising events. They
also moved out of their local
area by appearing in Oldham,
Blackpool Tower , Longleat,
Castleton Carnival and ITV’s
Telethon event in 1992.
The group approached
dalek creator Terry
Nation through his
agent Roger hancock
for permission to use
Davros and the Daleks
for the show. Initially
Terry
Molloy
was
approached to play
the lead but had other
commitments and then
Kevin contacted Micheal
Wisher who, to the
groups surprise, said
yes! The show was
directed by Nigel who
also created many of
the costumes as well as
filming some scenes as
‘evidence’ with the rest
of the Hyde Fundraisers
team. The 1993 event also
marked the northwest debut
appearance
for
actress
Elisabeth Sladen, famous for her
role as Sarah Jane Smith in DR
WHO. The Dr Who Exhibition
Management
company
Experience Management &
Design provided BBC Dalek
props and Mandrel costume
for the event’s display. Other
Guests appearing included
actress Deborah Watling and
The Valeyard actor himself,
Micheal Jayston .
After the convention more
new recruits joined the
group while others left to
concentrate on other projects
and their families. With the
success of their Convention
event,
REMEMBRANCE’95
was planned at The Periquito
Hotel in Oldham for March
1995. The groups reputation
and
professionalism was
starting to get noticed now, not
only by Dr Who fans but actors
from the series and the BBC.
For this event Experience
Management & Design provided
an impressive collection of
props and costumes for display
along with Dr Who car Bessie.
REMEMBRANCE’95 had a
fantastic collection of guests
that included Jon Pertwee,
Colin Baker, Caroline John,
Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts.
Additional prop and costume
displays came from London
member Derek Handley.
At this time the fundraisers had
also started to make regular
appearances at various Dr Who
Town centre collections had
become quite the norm for
the group by 1992 but they
wanted to develop a weekend
convention that would be a
little different.The answer came
from member Nigel Peever
who suggested a ‘theatrical’
presentation to bring DR WHO
to life to the fans. From this idea
Kevin Taylor developed a script
which became THE TRIAL
OF DAVROS, a show which
they would have as the key
attraction to their Convention
– REMEMBRANCE’93 at The
Village Hotel in Hyde.

the event celebrated its fifth

2003 brought Hyde Fundraisers
back to Blue Peter to celebrate
DR WHO’s 40th Anniversary
with actor Sylvester McCoy.
The programme was broadcast
on the evening of BBC Children

Around this time the team
started thinking of ways of
comemorating the groups 20th
anniversary in 2005 and after

some discussion it was agreed
Davros would indeed be back
on trial once again.
Actor Terry Molloy
was
approached
early to reprise the
character of Davros
and bring him to life
on stage.
Hyde Fundraisers
then
made
approaches to the
copyright holders at
Roger Hancock and
the BBC – including
the new Dr Who
Executive Producer
– Julie Gardner.
Because the original
had been so unique
there had to be a

In May 2004 Terry Molloy found
himself encased in alginate and

on by Sculptor Phil Robinson.
With aid of photographs and

to be recorded was for DEATH

could.
The last location recording
for the show took place in –
a quarry – once again where
final scenes were wrapped
for the evidence. Final edits
were delivered to Producer
Garry Cullen in June who
was also charged with getting
the stageteam together for July

Other cast that joined the
stageshow included Brian Miller,
husband of actress Elisabeth

reprising the role of Nyder
and Andrew Wisher, son of
the late Davros actor Micheal
as Prosecutor 1. Also appearing
on stage was John Leeson, ,
more familiar as the voice of
The Doctor’s robot chum K-9,
to play the Role of the Second
Prosecutor! The production
was exhausting for cast and
crew as they played to almost
a 1000 people in the theatre
who had come along to see
this unique stage production.
The show was followed by a
documentary screening that
also included many goodwill

TAMESIDE TARGETS SHARKS!
THE Council has given its
backing to a campaign aimed
at clamping down on legal loan
sharking in Tameside.
Cllr Catherine Piddington,
Executive
Member
for
trading standard and licensing
introduced a motion calling
on the government to give the
Council the powers to veto
licences for high street credit
agencies ‘where they could have
negative economic or social
impacts on our communities’.
The motion is part of a national
campaign to tackle the issue
while at the same time highlight
the benefits of using a more
trusted system such as a credit
union.
Explained Cllr Piddington:
“It is important that people
understand
that
these
companies are not the be-alland-end-all for those who need
help with their finances.The lack
of access to affordable credit
is socially and economically
damaging to our towns and
takes wealth away from our
most deprived communities.”
The motion states that the:
‘Council believes it is the
responsibility of all levels of
24 About Tameside
government to try and ensure
affordable credit for all, and
pledges to promote financial
literacy, affordable lending and
local credit unions such as
Cash Box.’
By passing the motion the
Council is calling on the
government to give local
authorities the power to
introduce caps on lending
for credit and to ensure that
everyone has access to a basic
bank account.
Cllr Piddington added: “These
loan firms seem to be popping
up every where and it’s no
coincidence that the areas
with the highest levels of social
deprivation are where you’ll
find them in abundance. I must
stress that what they are doing
isn’t illegal, but unless you can
pay the loan back quickly the
rates of interest they charge
grow massively very quickly.
“I would urge anyone who’s
thinking of taking out a loan
to contact a credit union first,
such as our very own Cash Box
to take up their offer rather
than taking a loan from these
legal loan sharking companies.”

(formerly Wall’s) and
transferred to the Council. As
well as opening up the new
employment opportunities
it will improve access to the
firm’s complex where over
600 people are employed.
Most of the employment
site is used for farming at
present. Previous attempts
at developing the 7-hectare
site, roughly the size of 13
football pitches, could not be
implemented due to access
issues.
Tameside Council Executive
Leader Cllr Kieran Quinn
said: “After years of planning
and negotiation we are
finally in a position where
the funding is available and
we can start to develop this
site to create much-needed
employment opportunities
for Tameside’s residents.
“This road is a win-win
for the Council and its
partners. Not only will Kerry
Foods have a new road and
improved access, we have
the chance to develop a
site capable of delivering a
significant number of new
jobs, to provide improved
access for residents who
live near-by, and to further
support economic and
employment growth in the
borough.”
Work is expected to be
completed in Autumn 2013.

M
aha Sankrati is of great significance to the
Hindu’s and is one of the most important
dates in the Hindu calendar.
Lord Surya(Sun God), is worshipped on this day. Maha
Sankrati also heralds the arrival of spring in the Indian
Calendar, is signals the end of evil and the dawn of
lightousness.
Sweets are made from sesame seeds and served on this day.
These sweets are also exchanged as a mark of friendship, the
symbolic meaning to be that people stick together even in
adversity.
In India an important event on this day is Kite flying, all over
India the sky is filled with beautiful coloured kites.
This is probably the only Indian festival which falls on the
same day every day that is 14TH January.
Lohri
L
ori is a very similar festival to Maha Sankrati,
it is celebrated in Punjab. The main event
for this festival is the making of a huge bonfire,
which symbolic of the homage to the Sun God for
bringing in the warmth.
Lori is a very joyful festival in Punjab, as people sit around the
bonfire, talking, laughing, praying for prosperity as they make
offerings of sesame seeds, peanuts and puffed rice to the fire.
Again as the Maha Sankrati festival, Lori also signifies how the
Sun is a symbol of plenty, it gives us all we need and the fire
on the other hand destroys evil spirits.

BIG WHEEL IN ROTARY
O
ver Christmas you may have
noticed the hard work of
local Rotary Clubs raising money
for good causes with their Christmas events and Santa appearances in the borough.
Managing the work of the Hyde branch
has been the responsibility of current
president David Bentley, a retired Bank
Manager who is fiercely dedicated to
the beliefs of Rotary. David, 65, has now
been involved for over 20 years and some
of his personal highlights include being
involved in the Commonwealth Games
and the tour of the sleigh each Christmas
around Hyde.
David as Father Christmas with the Mayor at the Hyde Christmas Lights Switch On
The Hyde branch established in 1937
celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2012 - a
remarkable achievement. Traditionally
members were recruited from professional organisations and local businessmen
from the ages of 30 up to 92 years of age.
However, in recent years Rotary Clubs
have embraced members from all professions who have a passion for the organisations beliefs, especially
the motto “Others
before self”.
“It’s about giving something back” says David
“Rotary is a vocational
organisation and the UK
groups are committed to
service which fundraising is a part of.Without
funds available we
cannot help groups and
other charitable projects
in the area and beyond.”
David Bentley, President of Hyde Rotary Club.
David, who is serving his second term
as President at Hyde,
highlighted some of the
recent projects funded
by the group, which
include a children’s
centre in Kampala, a
charity in Lesotho supported by princes William and Harry, brick
making machines for
Uganda, and equipment
for the Bangladeshi
community in Hyde.
Hyde Rotary are also strong supporters
of Willow Wood Hospice; having been
involved in helping to establish the charity
from the very beginning.
One of the key events in the Rotary
Calendar is the annual Gee Cross Festival
held in every June with raised monies split
between Hyde Rotary and Willow Wood
Hospice. The group have also been active
in giving support to local food banks help that is particularly welcomed in the
current economic climate
“People don’t have to join to help us.” Says
David. ”We welcome Friends Of Rotary;
where people can come along to special
events like the Sleigh tour at Christmas and
help us to collect. In 2012 we were delighted
to have the help of the Air Training Cadets
along with the support of The Guides and
The Scouts.” He also dispelled the view that
Rotary was an Elitist group. “In the older days
it was viewed as Elitist but it’s not, we don’t
seek particular professions, we are looking
for Rotarians – people who are willing to give
some time and effort to put something back
in the community”
All the local Rotary Clubs work very
closely together and in Tameside there
are groups representing Hyde, Ashton,
Denton & Audenshaw, and Stalybridge &
Dukinfield. The Hyde group meets every
Thursday at Werneth Low Golf Club
and if anyone is interested in joining or
supporting the work of our local Rotary
Clubs they can contact David on 01457

HEALTH MATTERS
Here is some healthy advice from Wendy Hobin
who has over 26 years experience in providing
health and supplement information.
January is a month when we all feel low after the season’s
celebrations.
For energy and vitality Floradix is an excellent tonic, containing
herb Extracts iron to support the immune system vitamins c&
b. This is also available as lactose and diary free and suitable for
vegans vegetarians.
We all lack sunshine and vitamin d3 is
the only vitamin we can absorb from the
sun. When U.V rays hit the skin vitamin
d is formed. This vitamin contributes
to functioning of the immune system,
maintenance of teeth, bones and supports
normal muscle function. With our lack of
sun this is an excellent supplement .
Selenuim is an essential trace element to
human health. Selenium helps to maintain
a healthy immune system that is important for our
body’s resistance to infection bacteria and viruses.
It’s important to get the right advice so you get the supplement
you need.

The Potting
Shed
It’s a brave new year in the
garden, time to plan and do
ready for the great spring
rush that comes leaping after
February.
So now look and see what it is you wanted to do? How about
plant that hedge you have always wanted or shrubs and trees?
The rain and wind might make it cold but the soil is still retaining
some warmth, so great down to the garden centre and pick
your hedge, there are so many bushes to consider that the
choice could leave you dizzy. Holly comes in many forms and
as an everygreen it can gown to a reasonable size within a few
years. Whether you’re looking to create a privacy enclosure,
windbreak, or wildlife deterrent, another one to consider is the
Boxwood privet. Though the sheer colour and easy to grow pest
free of the Bougainville make these woody climbers with there
most beautiful display of blooms during their flowering season
hard to pass up on.
This is a good time of year when apple and pear trees are
dormant to do a bit of pruning and thinning out. Cut back the
new growth to one or two buds. Thin out branches that are
twisted, growing and rubbing other branches. Doing these jobs
will a good flow of air through the tree and increase light. To
finish off give the tree a winter wash this will kill insect eggs and
give you a good start to the spring.
Strong winds are expected as always at this time of year so
archways, fence posts and panels need to be secure this includes
young trees too.Young trees should be staked or if against a
fence then make sure they are secured for the rest of winter.
Also check climbing plants are fastened back. Borders need
some kind of mulch, but before you do that Clear Flower
borders of debris. Remove all debris from flower borders and
remember to cut perennials back down to ground level, use leaf
mould, compost or well rotted manure is the best mulch to use.
Whatever you choose to use you need to be putting a layer at
least two inches thick. Simply spread it all around your plants,
bushes and trees. By doing this you are putting nutrients back
into the soil which plants feed on and you also increase the
temperature of the soil which helps protect plant roots over
winter.
Cookery
Corner
Each month Eileen Gravener
from Lakeswood in Dukinfield
gives us a great recipe and for January she has a
great warming soup!
WINTER
WARMER BUTTERNUT
SQUASH SOUP
2 butternut squashes, each about
1kg (2¼lb)
30g (1oz) butter
1tbsp light olive oil
2 onions, peeled and chopped
1-2tbsp chopped fresh thyme
2 vegetable stock cubes
Salt and freshly ground black
pepper
Croutons and sprigs of thyme, to serve
Set the oven to 190°C or gas mark 5. Cut the butternut squash
in half and scoop out the seeds. Place the halves, cut-side down,
on the buttered baking parchment. Roast the squash in the
centre of the oven for about an hour, or until they are tender.
Remove the squash from the oven and leave them until they are
cool enough to handle.
Heat the butter and oil in a large pan, add onion and cook over
a medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 5-8 mins, or until
onion has softened but not coloured. Scoop butternut squash
flesh out of skins, add flesh to pan and discard skins. Cook for
1-2 mins, then add the thyme and stock cubes to the pan. Pour
in 1 litre (1¾ pints) boiling water, and stir until stock cubes
have dissolved. Bring soup to the boil; simmer for 20 mins, until
vegetables are tender. Remove pan from heat; leave soup to cool
slightly. Purée the soup in a blender or food processor until it’s
smooth, and season it to taste with salt and freshly ground black
pepper.
Reheat the soup before serving. It will be quite thick, so dilute
to the desired thickness by adding some boiling water..You can
serve the soup with croutons and sprigs of thyme, and grind
over some black pepper to taste.

Tom Cruise stars in a stunning thriller about a remorseless ex-army cop who will stop at nothing to
achieve justice. A gunman shoots dead five civilians in a crowded city. The police swiftly arrest James
Barr (Joseph Sikora), but the suspect demands to see Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) - a taciturn, resourceful
and reclusive former military policeman. Barr’s lawyer Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike) is astonished
when Reacher walks into her office and announces that Barr has been
framed. When she’s kidnapped by goons working for a sinister bad guy
known as The Zec (Werner Herzog), Reacher needs to draw on all the
considerable skills at his disposal. Burning with a fierce sense of justice
and scant regard for the law, he’s soon firing on all cylinders! Adapted
from Lee Child’s bestselling novel series by Christopher McQuarrie,
Oscar-winning writer of ‘The Usual Suspects’, this gives Cruise a brilliant
new action man role. Celebrated film-maker Werner Herzog makes a
striking Hollywood villain debut!
MONSTERS INC 3D (U)
Disney Pixar’s smash hit comedy gets a 3D re-release in Cineworld ahead
of 2013 prequel ‘Monsters University’. Sully (voiced by John Goodman)
is the top ‘scarer’ at Monsters, Inc in the city of Monstropolis. Aided by
his loyal assistant Mike (BillyCrystal), Sully’s job is to enter our world,
collect children’s screams and use them to power the city’s energy supply.
However, Monstropolis is suffering a deficit because children are becoming
harder to scare - but Sully and Mike are faced with a bigger problem
when a little girl named Boo finds her way into their world, causing panic
amid fears of contamination. Eventually, Sully forms a heart-warming bond
with Boo, and realises that her laughter generates more energy than her
screams. As Sully attempts to return her to the real world, he must ensure
that slimy lizard Randall (Steve Buscemi), who wants Boo’s screams for his
own ends, doesn’t discover her first.
THE IMPOSSIBLE (12A)
Ewan McGregor stars in an astonishingly realistic disaster movie recreating
the 2004 Asian tsunami. British couple Henry (Ewan McGregor) and Maria
(Naomi Watts) are enjoying the Christmas holiday of a lifetime in the luxury
Thai resort of Khao Lak with their three young sons. On 26 December 2004,
the family are relaxing in the pool area when they hear an ominous rumble in
the distance. Before they have a chance to react, the entire resort is engulfed
in a giant wave as the tsunami strikes. Battered by an intense rush of turbid
water, Henry and Maria are separated. In a landscape of utter devastation,
they struggle desperately to find and re-unite their family. Based on an
incredible true story, ‘The Impossible’ is a breathtaking, edge-of-seat thriller
with a powerful emotional core. It’s Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona and
screenwriter Sergio G. Sanchez’s follow-up to their haunting ghost story ‘The
Orphanage’.
DJANGO UNCHAINED
Django is out to save his wife from a brutal plantation owner in the latest
genre mash-up from director Quentin Tarantino. Django (Jamie Foxx) is a slave
in America’s Deep South, whose wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) has been
sold to ruthless plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Rescued from his violent owners
the Speck Brothers by bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), Django is made an offer. Schultz
agrees to help Django free his wife from the Candyland plantation if he will lead Schultz to a ruthless
gang of killers known as the Brittle Brothers. Schultz aims to capture the brothers, dead or alive, and
needs Django’s help. In return, Django will also be granted his freedom. Expect mayhem and dark humour
aplenty in Quentin Tarantino’s new movie - complete with his usual roster of idiosyncratic characters,
snappy dialogue and jaw-dropping violence.
