Centre Pointe school
dance their way to
Dance Proms at the
Royal Albert Hall
Talented students from Centre
Pointe Dance School in Denton,
Manchester have been chosen to
take part in a major international
dance spectacular at the Royal
Albert Hall in November. Patrons
of the event include top dance
names such as Darcey Bussell
CBE, Arlene Phillips CBE and Len
Goodman.
The Centre Point dancers, who are
aged between 12 and 18, will join
24 other dance acts and celebrity
dancers on stage at the third annual
Dance Proms at the Royal Albert
Hall on 3rd November. Dance
Proms provides young dancers with
a unique opportunity to perform at
one of the world’s most prestigious

venues. Furthermore, the Centre
Pointe dancers will be sharing the
stage with some of the best youth
dance talent from the UK, Italy,
Belgium and New Zealand.
The twenty-five dance acts come
from all dance genres and will also
be joined on stage by reigning
British Ballroom Youth Champions
Kyle Taylor and Polina Shklyaeva
and a winning group from the 2013
Dance World Cup, who will all
make guest appearances.
Centre Point Dance School will
be performing a ballet piece
titled Taking A Picture to Roisin
Murphy’s song Ramalama. The
dance fuses together classical
ballet and contemporary dance to
create a unique and quirky piece of
choreography.
Centre Pointe has an impressive
list of current students including
a finalist for Sky 1’s Got To Dance
and a performer in the West End
production of Matilda. This will be
the schools third successive Dance
Proms appearance and they are
delighted to once again have the
opportunity to dance at such a
historical and famous venue.

Principal, commented: “Having
been a part of Dance Proms since
its inception we are thrilled to be
a part of the Dance Proms for a
third year running. The opportunity
to dance at such a prestigious
venue, following in the footsteps of
the recent production of English
National Ballet’s ‘Swan Lake’, is
such an exciting and wonderful
adventure for our young dancers.
Opportunities like this are few and
far between but Dance Proms has
set a standard to encourage new
and exciting choreography and
also embraces a huge variety of
dance styles from Cheerleading to
Ballroom, which is what makes this
event so special to all involved”.
Darcey Bussell CBE, Patron of
Dance Proms and President of the
Royal Academy of Dance, says: “It’s
so important that young talent
has a chance to see what other
talented people are doing at this
national event. I know from my
own experience how important it
is to see what your peers are up to
while you’re training. For a student,
performing at the Royal Albert Hall
is out of this world. They learn so
much and it will affect them for the
rest of their lives.”
To qualify, dance teachers submitted
a short dance piece featuring
original choreography in any
genre, and performed as a solo,
couple, trio or group performance.
This year, the genres range from
more traditional Ballet and Greek
Dance, to Rock, Street Dance,
Cheerleading and many more.

This month we have a great selection of photographs from Denton
Carnival which also included a special appearance by Teddy Tameside in
the parade. Ever fancied learning to ride a motorcycle? Well we were
lucky to be invited to try a CBT course and our willing victim Cheryl
Mellor found herself in the expert hands of Road Rider Training based
in Audenshaw. We also have our first ‘junior’ reporter this issue with
a special feature on Halloween by Charlotte Hall from Flowery Field

The Mottram and District Agricultural Society held
their Summer Show on Sunday 18th August, 2013.
There were classes for Heavy Horses, Private Driving, Concours
D’elegance , Light Horses, Working Hunters - T.B. - Coloured and
Spotted Horses - Veteran – Novelty and Show Jumping. As usual
other categories featured Dogs, Cattle and Sheep, Flower Arranging,
Horticulture & Crafts and
Poultry
There was also many other
attractions on the showground,
which made the event a great
day out for all the family.

t’s time to clean up and
clear the garden after
a long spring through to
summer of colour, crops
and celebration.
Leaves will now begin to fall
so you should be collected
to make compost and there
are wonderful bargains to
be had in end-of-season or
discontinued-line gardening gear
at super markets and cut-price
stores, take advantage and start
collecting ready for next year
but always check the date code
of any reduced seeds. Next we
need to clean and disinfect the
greenhouse be it plastic or glass,
clean the outside of the roof in
particular with a long, soft brush,
to maximise the winter light
levels inside, we need to ensure
that the heat from the sun really
does help your over winter
plants.
Now before the weather makes
the soil into mud turn the soil
with the spade or rotavator if
you have a bigger space, forking
it just as good (forking the lawn
helps with drainage), once
done, cover it ready for when
your ready to begin again. This
is the time to start preparing
new borders to be planted next
year: So dig them over to a few
spades’ depths, taking out weed
roots and adding coarse, old
compost or fallen leaves. Store
the tubers as they are, or dry
and cleaned of soil, lets not
forget that the Dahlia tubers
should be lifted and stored along
with Gladioli corms that should
be lifted and stored for next
year. Why not try Loganberries
and Raspberries? They should
be planted now ready and
established plants should have
the wood that has borne fruit
removed to ground level, as it
will be new shoots that bare the
fruit.You may still get a crop of
Radishes and Lettuces if you sow
now before the weather really
breaks and as light levels fall, on
window sills, keep houseplants
rather drier, to slow down
growth during the winter, ready
to explode when the heat and
light of spring returns.
But it isn’t all about work, there
are plants to enjoy too, Winter
Snowball produces pink fragrant
flowers while the branches are
still bare, this plant is adorned
with these decorative pink
umbels from November to
March and come the end of
the winter, as the weather
becomes slightly warmer, the
flowers fade to white. Then we
have the botanical rose Rosa
Rugosa which is a glorious sight
in the winter garden with its
deep red rose-hips, now birds
love these fruits, so you get
the bonus of helping the local
wildlife. Botanical roses come in
many different forms, including
bushes, climbers and standard
varieties. Most botanical roses
like sandy soil that is limy but
also nutritious and airy. But do
not plant them in a place that is
damp.
Ornamental grasses are also
decorative subjects in the winter
garden as the leaves change
colour. The appearance of these
plants changes constantly with
the changing of the weather and
a fine dusting of morning dew
frost or even snow gives them a
misty presence, which is a sight
to rival those distance summer
days. Lastly let’s look at Skimmia
Japonica, this is a magnificent
sight with its leathery evergreen
leaves with red and pink buds
that can be admired from late
autumn well into spring, then
white flowers appear in late
spring.

in Hyde is a friendly
family run success story
that aims to supply
costumes for any
occasion.
They have been in business for
over 12 years having seen an
opportunity to hire costumes,
but the real story began 25 years
ago when Bear and Balloons
was born, supplying balloon
decorations for weddings and
parties. Margaret who runs the
shop with her husband and
children explained that fancy
dress evolved over the years
to stock thousands of outfits
and accessories for adults and
children, covering everything
from seasonal like Halloween
and school curriculum to Hen
and Stag outfits. Another string
to their bow is the Dance Shop,
something Margaret is quite
passionate about, being a keen
support of the arts. Selling dance
outfits and shoes to from very
young through to adult and
now Margaret mentions they
even supply gymnastic costumes
too. In this current climate, it is
encouraging to meet a growing
local business that understands
what their customers want and
are willing to go that extra mile
to be helpful.

What kind of photo? Well
usually the cover does not
feature landscapes, we love to
show the people of Tameside. If
your photograph does include
people in a recognised Tameside
location please ensure you have
their permission for the image to
be published, this is particularly
important where children are
concerned. For those under 16
you must ensure permission is
sought by a parent or guardian.
If you have a great shot featuring
one of Tameside’s town centres
or recognisable landmarks we
would love to see them.

ASHTON WILL ROCK
THIS CHRISTMAS
Plans have been revealed
to highlight the biggest
Christmas promotion in
Ashton Town Centre for
many years with a host of
entertainment and activities
which will commence from
November 23rd. The theme
will be ‘Ashton Rocks This
Christmas’ with a stream
of free crafts, mascot
character appearances and
entertainment organised
by the Ashton Town Team.
In addition Tameside
Council has announced
plans for a vibrant holiday
village - which will include
30 traditional wooden
cabins as well as a stage
and covered bar - running
from 8 to 22 December in
the pedestrianised Market
Street area.
Festive highlights include
appearances by the Rock &
Roll Bears each Saturday from
November 23rd until Saturday
December 21st appearing around
the town centre. On December
7th there is also a performance by
leading Elvis Presley impersonator
Elvin Priestley who will be rocking
the town centre with hits from
the King between 11am and 3pm.
On Saturday December 14th there
is traditional Christmas music
from Uppermill Brass Band and
each week free crafts to keep the
children busy too.

also be entertaining shoppers and
once again Ladysmith Shopping
Centre will be hosting it’s
Christmas Grotto in aid of Willow
Wood Hospice with a ‘Peter Pan’
theme from 30th November until
December 21st.Alongside the
market hall the Christmas Market
will offer an enticing range of
European and local Christmas fare
– from beautiful crafts and gifts to
continental food, hot chocolate and
mulled wine – to complement the
goods and produce already available

in the award-winning indoor and
outdoor markets.
However the magical fair, which will
be lit with fairy-lights, will also be
the focal point of a variety of familyfriendly entertainment including
a Winter Wonderland lantern
parade on its opening day and a
show-stopping fireworks display
on its final night. Children will be
able to enjoy a Victorian carousel
which will be open throughout
the duration of the Christmas
market, while the local community
– including schools, groups and
businesses – will be getting involved
with daily live music, choir and
brass band performances on the
stage.
Although the Christmas market will
be centred in Ashton – Tameside’s
main sub-regional shopping centre
– businesses in other town centres
will have the opportunity to hire
stalls. The cabins will also be
available for other special events
in other towns across the borough
throughout the year.
Tameside Council Deputy Executive
Leader Cllr John Taylor, who is
responsible for markets, said:
“Ashton has so much to offer and
- with Metrolink also coming to
the town centre – the Christmas
market has the potential to bring
tens of thousands of additional
people to the town, giving trade
a major boost during this crucial
time.
We hope this will become an
annual event and will grow from
strength to strength as it showcases
Ashton as a vibrant Christmas
shopping venue.”
The Christmas Market will launch
on Sunday December 8th with
a spectacular lantern parade in
the town centre featuring an
appearance by Father Christmas
and hundreds of children. The
market will feature traditional
Christmas food and gifts and will
be running all the way through
until December 22nd with late night
opening up to 9.30pm in the week
and until 5pm on Sundays. Managed
by New Image the Christmas
Market will also include a stage
area which will feature a variety of
entertainment each day, a Victorian
Carousel and there are plans for a
Bavarian Themed bar too.

Mum of ‘Little Miracle’
Tells of ‘Guardian Angel’
Consultant
A grateful couple have called
their son a ‘little miracle’ and the
Consultant at Tameside Hospital who
treated them ‘their guardian angel’
after losing two other babies shortly
after their premature birth and
suffering a further six miscarriages.
Baby Harley McLean, now aged 8
months, was born to proud parents
Rachel Hales and Andrew McLean,
both 25, the little fighter was on
life support and contracted several
infections which had to be treated
with strong antibiotics but at 11
weeks old was discharged from
Tameside Hospital and is now thriving.
MP Claims Lobbying Bill
will hit Local Charities
Denton and Reddish MP Andrew
Gwynne has claimed that respected
local charities in his constituency
could have their voices gagged by
the Conservative-led Government’s
Lobbying Bill, with potentially
damaging consequences for people in
the constituency.
Andrew Gwynne said: “This bill would
discourage and restrict those who
are already working hard to improve
their communities. David Cameron
came into Government claiming to
be passionate about building the ‘Big
Society’ but the truth is that this Bill
will make life much tougher for our
charities.”
Harry is a “Grassroots Hero”!
Curzon Ashton Chief Executive
Harry Twamley has been selected
as one of 150 ‘Grassroots Heroes’
in recognition of his outstanding
contribution to grassroots football.
HRH The Duke of Cambridge, in his
capacity as President of The Football
Association, will host a special event
at Buckingham Palace on Monday
7th October to pay tribute to 150
volunteers from around the country
that help deliver and support the
nation’s favourite game. The event,
which forms part of The FA’s 150th
anniversary celebrations, will include
an official ceremony at Buckingham
Palace with the 150 specially selected
grassroots heroes each being awarded
a medal by The Duke.
Harry said “I am delighted with this
award not just for me, as I regard
it as an award for all of the people
who work so hard and voluntarily for
Curzon Ashton Football Club, and
without all of these people we would
not have achieved what we have so
far and also what we are about to
achieve in the future.”

Conditional Discharge
A Denton woman has been given
a 12 month conditional discharge
and ordered to pay £100 in costs
and a £15 victim surcharge after
fraudulently claiming over £3,000 in
benefits.
Gillian Lancake, of Kipling Avenue in
Denton pleaded guilty to receiving
£3685.93 in Housing and Council
Tax Benefit for the period from 28th
March 2011 to 5th March 2012 at
Tameside Magistrates’ Court on
Wednesday 4th September. This was
contrary to Section 111A(1A) of the
Social Security Administration Act
1992.

Praise for Cancer Care
Tameside Hospital is celebrating after
being praised by a health watchdog
for the way it diagnoses and treats
cancer patients.
The National Cancer Patient
Experience Programme surveyed
patients over 16 were from 160 NHS
Trusts in England, sampling those
treated as day or inpatients from
September 1 to November 30 2012.

Best Season Ever
for Denton West
It has been a superb 2013 for Denton
West Cricket Club as they added
to their seasons’s trophy tally by
retaining the second XI championship
of the JW Lees Brewery Lancashire
County League. This completed
a League and Cup double for the
Second XI after winning the Hulme
Trophy a few weeks ago.
The club had already celebrated
winning the the First XI championship
meaning that the seasons haul for
West was a club record three out of
four senior trophies that were up for
grabs.
The First XI won 21 out of 26
matches to win the title with a points
total of 102. The 2nd XI won their
division with 97 points after winning
20 out of 16 matches.

playwright, August Strindberg,
in 1888, is considered to
be one of the classics of

game which very quickly
escalates, culminating in a
cataclysmic ending.
In this new English version

rare, according to Alex
Walker an instructor
at Road Riders School
of Motorcycling, often
he explains, drivers lose
patience and try and
overtake or get very
close to the rider almost
pushing them along

Teaching new riders how
to deal with problems
like this and giving a
more personal in-depth
look at safety and road
awareness is something
Road Riders has been
doing for over six years,
having previously been
instructors for a major
Manchester firm.
We followed Cheryl
Mellor of Dizzi Gothic,
taking her CBT
(Compulsory Basic
Training which allows
learner riders ride on
the road for two years)
with Road Riders and
Alex was her instructor
for the day. Cheryl was
very nervous having not
ridden a bike in a number
of years, though keen to
get back into it. The CBT
is a full day course aimed
at new rider and existing
bike riders, the first part
of the day was taken up
with road safety and the
Highway Code, explaining
what to do and expect
on the road, before being
taken outside the classroom
to be shown a bike and have
every part explained in detail.
Cheryl told us that ‘Alex was
so relaxed and competent in
the way he explained everything
that it gave me confidence to
ask questions without feeling
silly’. Once the class had a
feeling for the in’s and out’s of
the bikes, they moved on to
riding in a sectioned off part
of the car park. Alex went
through starting and stopping,
explaining the best ways to get
out of trouble before it even
happened and then let them try
for themselves, building their
confidence levels as they slowly
did circuits with feet down, then
without much encouragement
Cheryl had her feet up and was
riding with a smile. As the day
progressed the practice area
was altered to reflect a road
and the class was taken through
how to behave at junctions,
traffic lights and so on, ready
for that all important part of
the day when they would be
allowed to take to the road to
complete their training. Cheryl
was unable to complete her
road training on the day, but has
promised to return to gain that
all important DL196 Certificate
that allows you to ride up to
125cc motorcycle on the road
with L plates.
Alex was keen to mention that
they have quite a few women
riders coming to their school,
because they offer a more
patient and relaxed service
to bring out the best in any
rider. Road Riders School

I

times it’s even more
vital to support your
local charities and Willow
Wood Hospice has been
constantly innovative
in generating funds.
We talked to Appeals
manager John Fellows
about the hard work and
dedication from staff
at volunteers at Willow
Wood.
How long has the hospice
been established now ?
Well amazingly we are
celebrating our 15th anniversary
in 2014. The hospice actually
opened in May 1999 and we
can’t believe in May next year
it’s an incredible 15 years!!
So you plan to celebrate
this achievement ?
We will certainly celebrate the
opening anniversary, we are not
sure what we are planning yet
but we have one or two ideas.
Is it becoming harder
to come up with ideas
to raise money ?
Yes, but we do have one or two
new ideas coming through with
ways to maintain the support
from the people of Tameside
and Glossop which have helped
our services over the past 15
years. It does become difficult
generating new ideas but the
support from the community is
tremendous.

volunteer support?
Volunteers are our lifeblood. We
have over 450 active volunteers
and anyone who can spare a few
hours or a day in the week can
get in touch with us and ask for
Bea Robinson, the Volunteer
Services Manager.
What’s planned for
the remainder 2013 ?
Well last month we had the
Brazz In The Grass event which
was extremely popular. On
the 22nd of October we have a
WOOFS & WELLIES sponsored
dog walk which we hope
people will support. Our major
fundraiser will be the Halloween
Ball at the Midland Hotel,
Manchester on 26th October
where people can come in fancy
dress costume, lounge suit or
black tie. The venue hosted last
years popular Masquerade Ball
so we expect this will also be a
great hit with people attending.
There is a champagne reception,
a delicious three course dinner
and some entertainment which
we are keeping under wraps
at present. Tickets are £48.50

the big family here at Willow
Wood, we have the Nursing
staff , the medical team, all the
ancillary services and of course
all my colleagues in the admin
department too.

Definetly, they should get in
touch for a registration form so
we know what’s going on and
avoid any events that may be
duplicated or the same type of
events which might dilute the
impact and support.
The Matron of Willow Wood,
Karen Valentine,has also been
actively fundraising for the
hospice, we asked her about her
recent contributions.
I was diagnosed with Breast
Cancer last year and from that I
decided to turn a negative into
a positive and committed to do
the Three Peaks Challenge to
raise funds for Willow Wood
and Breast Cancer Care. So
when I committed to do this
my daughter Emma also wanted
to get involved so we did it
together. So with us and six of
my friends we undertook the
challenge of climbing Ben Nevis
Scarfell Pike and Snowdon in 24
hours! Within the time five us
out of the group made it and
currently we have raised £8000.
Why should people
choose Willow Wood as
a charity to benefit from
their fundraising ?
I think it’s a wonderful place to
be, we give expert pallative care
and its such a nice enviroment.
We have experts here in clinical
care which I think is very
important in an atmosphere
where people are treated with
dignity and respect.
You have also been

I have supported a fundraising
calendar with the staff and
locals of the Joshua Bradley
which again will benefit Willow
Wood & Breast Cancer care.
The Calendar features Men &
Women not wearing very much
for a good cause. The idea came
from me and quizmaster Dave
Bradley and was just another
way to raise money.

new occupiers of the M&S
premises on Warrington
Street.
The huge site has been empty
since the end of January when
M&S relocated to their new
site at Ashton Moss. Discount
Uk already operate a unit at
Crown Point north and usually
consists of the
ground floor as
Poundworld
with the upper
floor designated
Discount UK, a
home store selling
various products.
Jack Fulton Frozen
fdoods have also
invested in an
updated premises
opposite their old
unit on Old Street
which was the
former home of
Ethel Austin.
However, we also
said goodbye to
one of the towns
Night Golf Raises
Funds for Tameside 4 Good
long established independent
retailers when Ashton Outdoors
on Stamford Street closed it’s
doors. Originally called Outdoor
Action the shop specialised in
camping, outdoor clothing, boots
and ski-wear for over twenty
years. Also on Stamford Street
the owners of LM Motorcycles
announced their retirement and
the motorcycle shop is set to
close very soon.
The Night Golf Company
event sponsored by
Marlborough Motors raised
over £500 for Tameside
4 Good. The event was
the first of its kind held
at Denton Golf Club and
it attracted teams from
across Tameside to take on
six holes after dark to raise
much needed funds for
local good causes.
The Denton course was set up
with glow-sticks marking the
teeing-off areas, fairways, hazards,
greens, flags and holes in different
colours. In the six hole night golf
tournament players will be using
special multicoloured ‘glow in the
dark’ golf balls.
Alan Pickering, owner of
Marlborough Motors, commented:
“The night golf event proved to be
a success. Not only were we able
to support local good causes, it
also gave all of the golfers a new
experience and a great night. It is
definitely something we would do
again but I can’t say it improved
our golf.”

IT’S A SCAM
O
k, so we all know
about email from the
ex-wife’s diplomat husband
from some state in Africa
who has ten million US
dollars that they need your
help to ship out of the
country, just give them all
your banking details and
you’ll earn a cool million.
Or the postcode lottery emailpeople actually fell for them, a
good scam is one that the public
doesn’t know about and some
people just see the best in others
and become the victims. Millions of
peoples hard earned cash is stolen
in scams, the only way to stop it
is making sure people are aware
of them. There is a new scam in
town and it’s so sleek many have
fallen foul of it.You receive a call
from a police officer, they say your
bank details have been found in a
raid and that they need your help.
So convincing are they that they
even get you to ring them back to
prove they genuine, how do they
do that? By staying on the line
when you put the phone down
and pick up to dial, a ringing sound
then an ‘operator’ put you back to
the con-artist. They get your card
details and pin number, sometimes
the victims are persuaded to
cancel their cards, but when they
try to phone their bank to do so,
the person they end up talking
to is the con-artist, they then
convince them to hand their cards
over to a courier, who calls at
their door within the hour. If you
receive this call or a call from say,
your bank, do not give out your
date of birth, your house number
or your postcode, if its genuine
they will understand and you ask
then that they should write to you.
Scams come in many forms, again
we are warned not to give out
our card pin number and guard
the keypad when entering it. But
let’s stop and think about this, if
there are people hanging around
a cash point outside the bank, go
inside and use a machine, if it’s late
at night, its safer to go to a local
shop and get cash back. Again its
about being careful and not giving
someone the change to pick your
pocket and spend your cash.
Some scams are hidden deep
within an offer of wealth or
opportunity, such as the job offer
scam. Simply put, you are sold the
offer of a job, but first you must
be trained, the course is not free
and you pay upfront and often on
a card, The course and job never
existed and your account is now
empty.
Here is a few more of them that
have conned money out of people
from every walk of life. PPI refunds
are big news, you are texted or
called by someone claiming to be
your bank, the Ministry of Justice,
or a PPI company and told you are
owed money in the form of missold PPI payments, but you must
pay an administration fee before
the refund can be processed.
Computers are a necessary evil
to some of us and we have no
idea how they work which is why
this scam is so good, its the virus
hoax, you are called by “Microsoft
Windows Support” and told
your PC has a virus or is running
slowly. The problem can be solved
remotely if you give them your
credit card details and/or remote
access to your PC.
Now this next one is bad because
it is aimed at the elderly who often
do not have the support network
to call on for help.You receive
an “urgent” phone call from
“The Pensions Helpline” or your
pension provider stating that you
are entitled to a £1,000 pension
bonus from the government,
or that your pension has been
underpaid. In order to receive
your money you must pay a fee or
give out your personal details on a
premium rate line.
Modern scammer or hackers can
invade your PC and steal your
details. Always have antivirus and
spyware up-to-date and clear
your browser history every time
you surf or login to your online
bank. If you have a Bluetooth
phone, change the setting to
make it hidden and try not to
login to your bank in wifi free
areas, if a branch may only be a
short walk away, best to go there.
In the current climate caution is
always the best approach and if a
promotion or offer sounds too
good to be true – IT IS LIKELY
THAT IT IS!

to encourage people in the borough to join the group.

usical group Bloco
Mente is drumming
up a trend in Tameside
and looking for new
members from across the
borough to join in.
The percussion group plays
samba and world funky fusion
rhythms from around the globe
and is the type of drumming
that can be seen and heard at
Brazilian carnivals.
It also plays West African
rhythms, which encourage
creativity and self-expression.
The sounds are energising
and inspirational to people of
different ages, backgrounds and
abilities while improving coordination.
The currently 20-strong Bloco
Mente group is hitting the right
notes here in Tameside during
its weekly two hour session in
Haughton Green on Wednesday
evenings.
The group meets to make
some noise, playing instruments
including African djembe drums
and Brazilian surdo drums
accompanied by a range of

or own your own instrument.
Drums, bells and shakers are
provided and the rhythms are
easy to learn with members
picking up the beat in just one
session.
Bloco Mente’s musical
leader is Zac Sargent, one of
Manchester’s most diverse
percussion experts with a
wealth of knowledge in almost
every style. He founded
Rhythmix, which offers
workshops and tuition using
drums and percussion from
around the globe.
Zac has travelled the world,
building up an in depth
knowledge not just of the
drums but the different cultures
around them.
Bloco Mente was originally
set up through Tameside
Council’s Health and Wellbeing
Department to encourage
people from the borough to try
new interests.
‘Bloco’ is a term used for a
group of drummers and ‘mente’
means ‘of the mind’ reflecting
the original reason the sessions
were started, to promote
personal health and wellbeing.
People who tried the sessions
enjoyed them so much, they
wanted to continue the
drumming group themselves.
Now new members are being
sought with funding and grant
opportunities also being
explored to help keep the group
going long-term. Donations
from Tameside businesses to
help support the group are also
welcome.
The group’s secretary Sylvia
Harrison, from Stalybridge, said:
“When the whole group starts
to build up a rhythm it’s brilliant,
the sounds are amazing and it
feels really great to build up a
samba groove together. There’s
a real sense of group spirit at
Bloco Mente with people of
all ages enjoying the feeling of
wellbeing that it creates.”
Group treasurer Val Aris, who
lives in Dukinfield, added: “We’re
all fans of the sound that Bloco
Mente is making but we really
need more members to keep
the group going and to help us
make an even bigger noise in
Tameside! We want to make a
community group that’s a real
success in the borough.”
Bloco Mente member Pete
MacCarthy, from Hyde, said:
“I’ve always loved music. Bloco
Mente is fun, I’m learning new
skills and like being a member
of the group. It’s a really sociable
thing to do.”
And the group’s youngest
member Josh Hallas aged nine,
from Dukinfield, who comes
with his mum Michelle, added:
“I really like coming because I
like making lots of noise. I like
playing the snare drum best, it’s
really loud.”
New members can try the first
week for free with sessions
costing £5 a week after that.
Children under 16 can attend
free of charge but must be
accompanied by a paying adult.

A NAME WITH HISTORY
The name of Meeks has
long been associated
with footwear in Ashtonunder-Lyne. But how did
it begin? John Meeks and
Sally Wood enlighten us
to the story.
Edward Meeks, the founder
of Edward Meeks Limited
was born in Kettering,
Northamptonshire around
1865. His father, a blacksmith
was a violent man and a heavy
drinker. Edward saved his
pennies doing odd jobs until
he had saved approximately
5 shillings, then he ran away
from home. Catching a train to
Manchester fate decreed that
on the train was a young man
who worked in a shoe shop in
Manchester, and who thought
they might have an opening for
a junior sales assistant. So began
his career in the shoe trade!
He worked his way up from a
junior to manager, eventually
running a branch in Ashtonunder-Lyne. He was always a
frugal man, saving constantly
from a poor wage. He neither
drank, nor smoked. He did
however marry and had three
children. He badly needed a
rise in wages to support them.
The company he had worked
for so hard refused to increase
his wages however, so he left
and started his own little
shop on Warrington Street.
The year was 1903, his son
William joined the company in
the early 1920’s and expanded
the business into Hyde and
Eccles. They also substantially
increased the area of the
existing shop on Warrington
Street.
Edward was always very active
on the Town Council he became
Mayor during the war years of
1940 to 1945. He raised money
through charitable works to
buy a spitfire to help with the
war effort. He spurned the use
of the Mayoral car, walking or
going on the bus to his official
functions. He worked every
morning and he became the
longest serving councillor on
Ashton council. He was greatly
honoured by being made an
alderman and finally a freeman
of the borough of Ashtonunder-Lyne.
He worked at the shop until
three weeks before he died
when he was 88 years old.” A
very remarkable man, to whom
we as a family owe a great
deal”.
The company is now run
by two of his great, great
grandchildren, John and Sally.

he statistics show that
every two minutes a
motorist will fill up their
vehicle with the wrong
type of fuel. But what
should you do if this
happens to you?
Around 300,000 drivers filled up
their car with the wrong fuel last
year, according to new research
by a leading car retailer. Wrong
fuelling can be a very costly
mistake, as you may need to get
the tank drained and cleaned.
The cost of draining the bad fuel
and then the repairs - especially
for cars with catalytic converters
- can be anything from a few
hundred to many thousands of
pounds if you need a replacement
engine. Research says that
vehicles are mis-fuelled around
400 times a day in Britain.
If you are very lucky you may
be able to recover this expense
on your car insurance policy,
something else to consider is
that it could also invalidate your
vehicle warranty, quite scary
when you put all the implications
together!
It’s so easily done though, If you’re
running around in someone else’s
car or a fleet car from work then
the likelihood of your making a
mistake at the pumps increases
significantly, the most common
times are first thing on a Monday
morning and Friday evening when
people are rushing to get to and
from work and with diesel pumps
at petrol stations positioned right
next to the petrol pumps, or
simply coloured slightly differently,
drivers can easily be mislead on
the filling station forecourt.
It is much less common to put
the wrong fuel in a petrol car
than to put the wrong fuel in a
diesel car because the standard
diesel nozzle at the petrol station
is slightly wider than the fuel filler
neck on the modern petrol cars.
So what happens when you
petrol into a diesel car?
Petrol wrecks a diesel engine
lubrication process, and is
particularly damaging to its costly,
high-pressure pump, fuel injection
system and filters.
So if you know you’ve made the
classic mistake, don’t start the

Whatever you do - Don’t drive
off! Don’t even turn the key in
the ignition, as this primes the fuel
pump, drawing fuel from the tank
and contaminates the fuel system.
Fuel sitting in the tank can be
drained and the fuel filters
cleaned or replaced, but once
it’s round the engine it can cause
major problems and cause your
vehicle to stop working.
The best thing to do is put the
car into neutral and push it to
a safe place. If you have already
started the engine and driven off,
then you may get half a mile or so
down the road before your car
gives up the ghost on you.
Will your insurance pay
out?
You’ll need to check the small
print of your car insurance policy.
Some policies do include misfuelling cover as standard. Other
policies may include cover under
accidental damage part of your
policy. However, while this might
cover the cost of draining the
tank and getting you back on
the road, it may not pay out for
any subsequent engine damage if
you drive off.You may find other
insurers offer mis-fuelling as an
added benefit to your existing
policy and there will be a small
premium to be paid.
What about your
breakdown cover?
Breakdown cover may mean
you’re taken to the nearest garage
or even home. However, it won’t
cover the cost of the tank drain
as breakdown companies deem
mis-fuelling to be a driver error.
Both the AA and RAC offer
mobile fuel-draining services for
members and non-members,
check your breakdown cover to
see if this applies to you. In the
majority of cases the breakdown
services will only tow you to the
nearest garage where it’s down to
you to pay for a tank drain.
What can you do?
To avoid mis-fuelling in the first
place, diesel car owners could
always get a fuel sure diesel fuel
cap.
This replaces the conventional
fuel cap in your car and prevents
the smaller petrol pump nozzle
fitting in. We can supply these
caps for you and are around £10
in price.

return to Denton
Following the great
success of the Summer
Artisan Market in
Denton, the town’s
Twinning Association
will be organising a
second to be held
on Saturday 14th
December.
Last summer’s market boasted
many stalls selling arts, crafts,
cakes, pies, vintage ware,
confectionary and even
Denton-produced beer at the
Ale Station.
The markets are organised
by the volunteer-members of
the Denton Town Twinning
Association.
The Christmas Market will
be bigger than before and
entertainment will rival last
summer’s brass bands and
dance troupes.
The market will take place on
the Civic Square - 1-6pm. The
market will also celebrate the
strong links between Denton
and its twin towns of Kierspe
(Germany) and Montigny
(France).

Hyde’s Halloween Circus
The Civic Square
in Hyde will be
transformed on the 26th
October into the home
of a Halloween circus
style event.
The Hyde Town Team are
proud to present a variety
of entertainment for families
to enjoy on this special day,

Ring Master to bedazzle and
amaze, though at eight foot
tall you you’ll certainly not
miss him. There will be fun
crafts in the big red tent, lots
of fun for all ages is catered for,
while the magician will appear
and tantalise members of the
public with feats of amazement.
Balloons are everyone’s friend
and the artist providing them
on the day is waiting for your
challenge. But let’s not forget
clowning around, we are
promised an act so funny, sides
are sure to ache. So on the
26th of October between 11am
and 3pm where else could you
be happily entertained and all

own Town Team, and best of all

Here’s a great idea for
creating some simple
Halloween decorations
with these great paper
lanterns…
What you need:
Sheets of orange paper or
card
Scraps of black paper or card
Scissors
Stapler
Glue
Pencil
You can make big lanterns out
of a whole A4 sheet, or cut
the A4 sheet in half to make
smaller ones. A combination
of big and small looks good.
Fold your sheet of orange
paper in half lengthways.
Now, with the fold edge facing
you, cut 1cm slits all along the
length of the folded piece of
paper. (Don’t cut right to the
edges, just make the slits sit
about 4cm from each edge.)
Open the piece of paper out.
Now roll it into a lantern
shape - secure each short
edge together with a stapler
to form a cylinder.Use your
scraps of black paper to glue
eyes, nose and a mouth onto
your spooky lantern.
When you have at least four
lanterns, you can use a hole
punch to make holes in the
tops and then string them
together to hang up outside
your house for Halloween.

October the first ABBA
musical Chess will be laid
out to play in the George
Lawton Hall, Mossley.
It’s a story of love
against a backdrop of the
coldwar when American
and Russian players faced

The show is ninety percent
singing and David Own their
press officer explained, making
this one of the most complex
and demanding productions
to date. Martin Preston the
shows producer, added that the
greatest challenge for the cast
is performing on a giant chess
board actually on the hall floor
while trying to ensure that

sides of audience at the same
time.
BBC Radio Manchester’s Ian
Cheeseman has found himself
in their choir singing along in
his favourite all time musical,
Ian said that he watches
every production and very

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
picks up where Sony Pictures Animation’s
mouth-watering comedy left off. Inventor
Flint Lockwood thought he saved the
world when he destroyed his most
infamous invention - a machine that turned
water into food causing cheeseburger
rain and spaghetti tornadoes. But Flint
soon learns that his invention survived
and is now creating food-animals ‘foodimals!’ Flint and his friends embark
on a dangerously delicious mission to
battle hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees,
hippotatomuses,cheespiders and other
foodimals to save the world - again!
SUNSHINE ON LEITH
Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks star
in a feelgood musical woven from the
Proclaimers’ uplifting hits. Ally (Kevin
Guthrie) and Davy (George MacKay) are
two young soldiers who return home
to Leith after serving in Afghanistan. Ally
goes out with Davy’s sister, Liz (Freya
Mavor), who introduces her brother to
Yvonne (Antonia Thomas). Meanwhile, Liz
and Davy’s parents, Jean (Jane Horrocks)
and Rab (Peter Mullan), are celebrating
their 30th wedding anniversary. Stephen
Greenhorn’s acclaimed jukebox stage
musical took its title from the second
album by Scottish musical heroes The
Proclaimers. Their hits drive this moving
story about the difficulties of adapting
to Civvy Street. Actor-turned-director
Dexter Fletcher’s big-screen adaptation
was shot on location in Edinburgh and
Glasgow. Among its stunning set-piece
numbers is huge performance of ‘I’m
Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ featuring 500
dancers outside the National Gallery of
Scotland! This is also producer Andrew
Macdonald’s first film in Scotland since the
legendary ‘Trainspotting’.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD
Thor: The Dark World is the next
installment in the thrilling Marvel story
from one of the directors of TV’s
magnificent Game of Thrones. A dark force
from before the birth of the universe has
returned led by an evil genius that even
the gods cannot conquer. It is, then, for
Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to go into battle,
not only to save Jane Foster (Natalie
Portman) but to protect the universe
from the evil Malekith (Christopher
Eccleston) and the darkness he wants to
plunge us all into. Thor:The Dark World is a
ripping adventure with some great
sequences of London being blasted.
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
Tom Hanks stars in the incredible
true story of the first US ship to
be seized by pirates in 200 years. In
2009, the unarmed US container ship
Maersk Alabama is charting a course
off the coast of Somalia. On his radar,
Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks)
observes speedboats heading in their
direction. He then launches a wellplanned emergency procedure that
puts the ship into lockdown while its
crew hide. The heavily armed pirates
led by Muse (Barkhad Abdi) board
the vessel, take Phillips hostage, and
flee in a lifeboat. So begins a tense,
high stakes stand-off that quickly
makes international headlines. This
true-life thriller is adapted from
Captain Phillips’ own book about his
experiences by ‘The Hunger Games’
screenwriter Billy Ray. ‘The Bourne
Ultimatum’ director Paul Greengrass
delivers a typically complex, nuanced,
politically charged action film that
focuses on the two contrasting men at
the centre of the unfolding drama.
GIRL MOST LIKELY
‘Bridesmaids’ star Kristen Wiig
shines in a quirky comedy about the
importance of family - even crazy
ones! Imogene (Kristen Wiig) has
had an emotional meltdown. A failed
playwright whose boyfriend has just
dumped her, she winds up in hospital
after a fake suicide attempt. Imogene’s
eccentric former go-go dancer
mother Zelda (Annette Bening) then
reluctantly whisks her back home from
sophisticated Manhattan to the oddballfilled family home in New Jersey. Zelda
is now shacked up with a fake CIA
agent who calls himself George Boosh
(Matt Dillon). Imogene’s brother Ralph
(Christopher Fitzgerald) has retreated
into a fantasy world. And to complete
her humiliation, her childhood room
is now occupied by a handsome young
musician (Darren Criss). But if she’s ever
to move on, Imogene must first come to
terms with her roots. This beautifully cast,
off-kilter comedy from US film-making
couple Shari Springer Berman and Robert
Pulcini is a hilarious celebration of the
unconventional family!
