FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Record numbers of students attend C-‐School in 2014-‐2015 (Bonnyville, Alberta – May 1, 2015) Over 500 students learned about the real-‐life applications of topics like architecture and design, cooking chemistry, and electrical workplace safety at C-‐
School this year. “We incorporated every possible part of the Centennial Centre into hands-‐on learning opportunities for C-‐School students this year,” said C-‐School program coordinator and teacher Laura Tuttosi. “From food service to the Zamboni to the cardio equipment, every nook and cranny of the Centre provided interesting real-‐world experiences for students to explore curriculum.” C-‐School is an experiential education program for students in grades 3 through 6. This year’s participating schools included Duclos School, North Star Elementary, Art Smith Aviation Academy, Ardmore School and Glendon School. This year’s program was also available in French for French Immersion students. C-‐School gives students the opportunity to take part in interactive activities that align with the curriculum they are learning in their classrooms. Through practical examples, they get to see how the things they are learning in school apply outside of school and even to their future career options. “There is a buzz of activity throughout the building as C-‐School students make the Centennial Centre their massive classroom while having fun as they learn,” said Gary Krawchuk, CAO, Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre. “ In a large way, this facility was designed to meet a vast spectrum of community needs of which the operation of the C-‐School program has grown to become a significant part.”
C-‐School is made available to students through a partnership between Northern Lights School Division, Cenovus Energy, the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre and the Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs. “On behalf of the Bonnyville Pontiacs I want to express my sincere appreciation to the staff and students associated with this year’s C-‐School,” said Rick Swan, Pontiacs General Manager and Head Coach. “Our players thoroughly enjoyed the experience working with the students on the ice and in the classroom and felt privileged to be a part of such a beneficial initiative. We look forward to being a part of C-‐School next year.” …/2 Recipient of the Premier’s Award for School Board Innovation and Excellence for our Literacy Programs “We are grateful to have the support of Cenvous, the Centennial Centre and Bonnyville Pontiacs in delivering this program to our students,” said Board Chair Arlene Hrynyk. “They are helping to provide our students with a memorable experience that will impact learning long after the week they spend at C-‐School. We truly could not do this without them.” C-‐School runs annually from October to April at the Centennial Centre and is open to students from all schools in the Bonnyville-‐Cold Lake area.
