PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the 2016-17 school year at Hillsdale Middle School.
This online handbook is available on the Hillsdale website throughout the year as a reference for parents and
students. Important information such as bell schedules, school guidelines, student expectations as well as
school-wide programs, emergency procedures and services is provided.
This is the first year we will be using an on-line planner called myHomework app for students to record
assignments. Teachers will be learning how to use the App and working collaboratively with students to
determine the best way to utilize and personalize this planning tool. The goal is for students and parents to
access and record assignments for all classes and school events. We appreciate your patience as we venture
into mastering this new organizational tool.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call or visit the school so we can assist you. I look forward to
meeting each and every one of you and together making this a successful and rewarding school year.

MORNING ARRIVAL
Students must arrive or be dropped off at school AFTER 8:30 AM
unless enrolled in before school extended day classes. Once the gates
open at 8:30 am all students must enter and remain inside the gates at
all times. If students arrive to school between 9:00 am and 9:15 am
they must REPORT DIRECTLY TO ZERO PERIOD. Students who
arrive to school after 9:15 am must report to the Attendance Office.
OFFICE HOURS
The front office is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm daily.
YEARLY CALENDAR
Please refer to the Cajon Valley District Calendar for school holidays
and report card periods.
“Be kind, be responsible.”

Parent Involvement
Information for Parents
Parents are Partners
At Hillsdale, parents are partners in the educational process.
Our staff understands that only by teaming with parents can
we help students achieve their full potential. Parents are
strongly encouraged to visit the school, supervise student
homework assignments, frequently check Zangle/Q Parent
Connect for assignments and current grades, communicate
regularly with teachers, and assure their student’s regular
attendance.
Student Handbook
This Student Handbook is posted on the Hillsdale website
and available through a new online App. The handbook
includes general student/parent information regarding
Hillsdale’s rules, grading policy, school activities and
operations. The calendar for recording assignments will now
be entered online through a new App called myHomework
App.
To ensure knowledge of school policies and procedure and
support academic success, students and parents must
familiarize themselves with the handbook. Please review
these pages together. During the first week of school,
teachers will review the handbook with their classes.
Students are encouraged to ask questions regarding policies
and procedures. Teachers will notify students on how
assignments will be posted and provide support on how to
use myHomework App. We appreciate your patience as we
transition to an online student handbook and planner.
A message for
parents
Item Drop-offs
Student must take
responsibility for bringing
necessary items to school.
We have a strict policy for
items dropped of for
students at the office. The
school staff will not interrupt
instructional time to deliver
items to students. If a family
member brings an item, the
office staff will not call the
student up to the office. The
student must take the
initiative to check before
school, during passing
periods and at lunch to pick
up their items. If time
permits, a hall pass may be
delivered to a student
AFTER LUNCH so they may
pick up any item(s) left.
Please take every measure
possible to ensure your child
leaves home prepared with
school items and materials
such as textbooks, pens,
pencils, paper, projects, PE
uniform, lunch or lunch
money. The office does not
have space and will not take
responsibility for any items
dropped off.
“Be the best you can be.”
Attendance Information
Student Attendance
Independent Study
Contract
Students who must be away
from school on family business
for five or more days, may apply
for an Independent Study
Contract. The contract can be
obtained from the Attendance
Clerk at least one week before
the first date of the absence.
Students with excessive
absences or D’s and/or F’s in
academics will not be granted an
Independent Study contract.
Teachers may assign contract
work. It is possible that your
student’s teachers will require
additional make-up work to
obtain credit for missed
assignments (i.e., test, research
projects, etc.) Assigned work
must be completed in its entirety
and returned to the office on the
day the student returns to school
or the absences will be
considered unexcused.
Successful completion of an
Independent Study Contract
does not count towards a perfect
attendance award.
Transfers/Withdrawal
Parents of transferring or
withdrawing students must notify
the Counseling Department prior
to the student’s last day. A
student’s withdrawal is complete
when all textbooks, library books
and Chromebook are returned.
All fines must be paid, records
cleared and a transfer/
withdrawal form must be
completed.
Critical to a student’s success in school is regular and punctual
attendance. Parents must clear student attendance within 5 days
following the absence. No single factor may interfere with a student’s
progress more quickly than frequent tardiness or absence. Regular
attendance is required by law, and students with unexcused
absences are considered “Truant.” Excessive unexcused absences
will result in a letter to the parent/guardian and/or may result in the
student being referred to SARB (School Attendance Review Board)
and the juvenile authorities. Students should arrive on campus NO
EARLIER than 8:30 am unless attending the supervised before
school program.
Absences and Tardies
Absences for personal illness, quarantine, personal medical or dental
appointments, or funeral attendance for an immediate family member
are the only excused absences according to the California Education
Code. In addition, an absence may be excused for a court
appearance, observation of religious holiday, or the funeral service of
a person who is not an immediate family member, provided the
absence is approved in written form in advance. Parents may provide
the office with an explanation for an excused absence, either by phone
(588-3017) or written note. Students who arrive after 9:15 am must
report directly to the attendance window where they will be given
an Admit to Class Slip. If a student arrives at school between 9:00
am and 9:15 am they must Report directly to their ZERO period
class and their teacher will mark them tardy in ZANGLE.
Definition of a tardy: A student not in their assigned seat,
with materials and ready to begin work when the bell rings.
Leaving School During School Hours
Parents should send a note to the Attendance Office BEFORE school
or come to the Attendance window 15 minutes before a student needs
to leave. If your child is in PE class, please be prepared to wait until
the end of the period for your child. Parents, family members or
authorized individuals indicated on the emergency card MUST BE
OVER 18 YEARS OF AGE AND BRING GOVERNMENT ISSUED ID
to the Attendance Window to sign out a student. Just a reminder that
classroom interruptions reduce students’ optimal learning time and are
strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary.
Saturday School/Academy
Students may attend Saturday Academy, when offered at other middle
schools, to make-up absences and/or tardies. Questions may be
directed to the Assistant Principal’s office.
“The choice is yours.”

Related Tardiness Consequences
Repeated tardiness can lead to academic and disciplinary
problems. Excessive tardiness to any period per trimester will
result in the following consequences:

2nd tardy
3rd tardy
4th tardy
5th tardy
6th tardy
7th tardy

Absences/Extra-Curricular Activities
In order to participate in any extra-curricular activities, students
should be present at school on the day of the activity, or the
Friday before, if the activity falls on a weekend.
How Attendance Builds School Success
Attendance is more than a student’s physical presence in the
school building. Regular attendance builds school success,
mental and intellectual engagement, social interactions, and
emotional responsiveness. The very nature of the school
experience challenges the student to encounter success in a
variety of areas. Attendance is the opportunity for a student to
develop in three different ways and each is important for
success.
• Successful academic achievement is directly related to
attendance. Success in academics builds readiness for
additional learning and forms the foundation for adult
careers.
• School attendance also provides opportunities for
emotional growth. Students are able to develop their own
identity in an environment of peers. They have the
opportunity to experience the culture of their school and
build their understanding of the behaviors that are
needed for success.
• School attendance also gives students the opportunities
and practice required to build the social interactions and
skills needed to develop positive relationships with others.
Health Office
If a student feels ill or is in need
of health care, a health office
pass must be obtained from the
teacher to allow the student to
go to the Health Office. We do
not have a certificated school
nurse at our school full time.
However, our Health Aide can
take care of most minor
problems like First Aid,
temperature assessment, and
phone calls home to determine
whether the student should
remain at school. If neither
parent nor emergency contacts
can be reached, the student
must remain at school until the
end of the school day. Students
who are ill may not walk or bike
home. A parent or authorized
individual must check out an ill
student from school.
Medication
Medication should be taken at
home if at all possible. If it is
necessary to take medication of
any kind, including OTC
medication during school hours,
the medication must be brought
to school in the original bottle or
OTC packaging, accompanied
by a completed Form #CH-41 Physician’s Recommendation
for Medication. Students are not
permitted to carry medication
with them at any time.
Students may not use a cell
phone to contact a parent or
guardian about health issues
during a school day without
first obtaining permission
from a teacher, health aide or
nurse.

Student Support Services
8
Counseling
Counseling
Conflict
Fighting and threats that
occur at school are strictly
prohibited. Students involved
in conflict, whether physical,
verbal or otherwise, may be
required to participate in
conflict resolution facilitated
by a staff member. The keys
to successful conflict
resolution are honesty, open
communication, personal
responsibility, and remorse.
Physical conflicts may result
in suspension. It is important
to note that students who use
physical force rather than
retreating or protecting
themselves during a physical
confrontation or students
participating in “play fighting”
may be subject to
suspension.
Change of Address
It is important that families
inform the school Counseling
Office of any change in
address or telephone
number. Current information
assures contact during
emergencies, delivery of
report cards and other
important notices or
correspondence from school.
The team providing Student Support Services includes 2 counselors, a
counseling clerk and a counseling secretary.
Services may include:
• Social/emotional counseling
• Groups concerning such topics as stress management,
decision making, self esteem, accountability, coping skills,
drug education, anger management and grief counseling
• Conferences with parents and/or teachers
• Schedules for appropriate classes
• Referrals to community resources
• Harassment issues
Our goal is to assist students to grow academically and socially during
their stay at Hillsdale. The middle school years offer new experiences,
challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities for students to clarify
values, set goals, and continue developing confidence and positive
self-esteem.
Students may request a confidential conference with a counselor to
discuss personal or school problems. Appointments may be made by
filling out a Counselor Request Form available in the Counseling
Office.
The counselors want to work with parents to see that the students’
experiences at Hillsdale are rewarding. Parents are encouraged to be
involved. Please call to discuss any concern or request counseling
services.
Support Program
A system of positive reinforcement, along with a progressive support
program is the foundation upon which an orderly, productive, and safe
school environment is developed and maintained. Parents are an
integral part of an effective support plan. Only by working together can
parents and staff provide the appropriate stimulus to help each student
achieve his/her best effort at school. Certain types of behavior are
considered extremely serious, and of such a disruptive nature, that
suspension and/or recommendation for expulsion may occur for the
first offense. These behaviors include:
• Threats or threatening behavior*
• Fighting
• Racial statements
• Robbery/Extortion
• Possession of explosives or use of weapons
• Serious bodily injury
• Sexual harassment
• Verbal or physical abuse of any school employee
• Bullying/Harassment
* Any inappropriate statements about bombs, guns, weapons, or killing will
warrant severe consequences. No kidding or jokes will be tolerated.

Academics
Classroom Conduct
Physical Education
Each student is required to take PE
each year. The PE uniform includes
shorts, t-shirt, socks, and athletic
shoes (supportive with laces are
strongly recommended). PE shorts
and T-shirts may be purchased from
the PE Dept. Locks are provided to
each student and are the property of
the school. Sweatshirts and
sweatpants are optional and can be
worn when the weather is cold.
They must be white, gray, blue or
black cotton/fleece material only
(NO NYLON sweats allowed) and
may NOT have pockets, hoods,
zippers, words or logos. Students
must adhere to school dress code
policy. Students may not “roll” their
shorts or “sag”. Limited emergency,
green loaner clothes are available.
School administration reserves the
right to enter school lockers at any
time to ensure a safe and secure
school environment. The school is
not responsible for lost or stolen
items.
Classroom conduct is an important key to a student’s success in
school. Students are expected to be prepared at all times. They are
expected to bring required materials to class, follow directions, and
conduct themselves in a way that supports their own achievement
and that of their fellow students. Continual violation of classroom
regulations may result in a student’s removal from class and/or
school. The following guidelines will help students to understand the
Hillsdale student behavior code and consequences.
Classroom Expectations
A quality learning atmosphere is the joint responsibility of
students, parents and Hillsdale staff. We all need to work
together to promote optimum achievement.
•
•
•
Pay close attention to teachers and record each assignment
correctly
Be in your seat when bell rings, ready to work
Arrange to make up work missed when absent
Be neat in appearance and help keep the classroom clean
and neat
Follow directions and classroom expectations
Online chatting, note writing or passing is not permitted
Uphold academic honesty at all times
•

•
•
•
•
If classroom rules are broken, the following actions are taken:
Missed Class Work or Homework
P.E. Medical Excuses
In the event of illness or injury, a
note must be provided by a parent
or guardian (which is honored for up
to 3 successive days and a
maximum of 2 times per trimester,
per CA Ed Code 51241).
If your child is injured or severely ill
and is not able to participate in PE
for an extended period of time, a
doctor’s note must be provided to
the Attendance Office immediately.
The Attendance Clerk will notify the
Counseling Office if an alternative
schedule needs to take place.
Students with PE notes must not
play activities before school or at
lunch as well. Please refer to the
PE rules and policies on page 27 for
more information.
It is the responsibility of a student who is absent for one or two days
to call a classmate, or look online at teacher websites, to get missed
assignments. After a student has been absent a third consecutive
day, the parent may call the school to arrange for missed work to be
picked up the following day in the front office.
Zangle/Q Parent Connection
Zangle/Q Parent Connection is a web application that provides
parents with direct access to student data via the Internet. Using a
confidential PIN and password, parents can connect to the school
district’s student database and view their student’s grades,
attendance, individual teacher emails, class news and more. To
obtain your PIN and password, each parent/guardian must bring a
government issued picture ID into the Hillsdale office and sign for the
paperwork. We will inform families new to Hillsdale when PINs and
passwords are available for pick up.

day where it can be picked up by
the student after writing the cell
phone rule.
2nd offense – A student will turn in
their phone in the morning before
school to be held by the AP
Secretary for 3 consecutive days.
Call made to parent.

offenses may result in cell phone
privileges modified while at school.
If a cell phone is brought to school,
parents and students do so at their
OWN RISK. Students are
encouraged to check the lost and
found, however, the return rate for
lost cell phones is minimal.
Harassment or bullying in any form is not tolerated at Hillsdale and
may result in severe disciplinary action, including suspension. Pursuant
to law, racially oriented comments or conduct derogatory
to a particular group or individual, constitutes harassment in the
educational setting. Harassment or bullying may occur as verbal
or written comments, physical annoyances or threats.
Every student on campus has the right to learn in a safe and secure
environment. If students witness other students being bullied or feel as
if they are being bullied, speak with an Assistant Principal, Campus
Safety Assistant or counselor right away. Bullying must be reported to
an adult in order for our staff to support your child.
Sexual Harassment
It is against state law and district policy for students to
engage in conduct of a sexual nature.
Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other
verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature, constitute
sexual harassment. Sexual harassment may occur as a pattern of
degrading sexual speech or actions, ranging from verbal or physical
annoyance or distractions, to deliberate intimidations and threats or

Student Information
Consequences for Misbehavior
Alternative Learning Center (ALC)
Students are assigned to the Alternative Learning Center (ALC) for
specified periods during the day if they are unable to maintain
appropriate behavior in their regular classroom or as a consequence for
misconduct. Parents are notified by phone the day of detention or by a
copy of the referral being sent home requiring a parent signature.
Students whose behavior is inappropriate in ALC may be sent home for
the remainder of the day or suspended.
Lunch Detention
A student may be assigned by administration one or more lunch
detentions, served in the ALC room, as a consequence for inappropriate
behavior at school.
Grade level teams or individual teachers may assign their own
detentions as consequences for misconduct in the classroom. These
may be served in the classroom at lunch and before or after school.
Please read the teacher’s syllabus for classroom expectations and
consequences at the beginning of each school year.
Suspension
Students are assigned suspension from school when the offense is
considered to be serious or students have multiple violations. Many of
the violations that warrant a suspension are found in the State Education
Code 48900. Students may not be on school premises unless with a
parent during suspension. Students are required to have a re-admission
meeting with an Assistant Principal. Students who engage in severe
offenses may be recommended for expulsion from the Cajon Valley
School District or transferred to another school.
Zero Tolerance
The Cajon Valley School District supports “Zero Tolerance” procedures.
“Zero Tolerance” means that any student who possesses a weapon,
provides or sells drugs at school, causes serious harm to another
individual or is a habitual disruption to the learning environment will face
suspension, possible expulsion proceedings, or arrest (when applicable).
Each Principal and Assistant Principal is provided with guidelines that
give very specific direction on the procedures to follow, should an
offense occur on campus.
Loss of Privilege List
(LOP)
Students earn placement on the
LOP list by:
- Receiving 2 or more F’s in
citizenship on their most recent
trimester report card or progress
report
th
- 5 and successive referrals in
a school year
- Suspension from school
- Administrative placement
Placement on the LOP list lasts
until a student loses a privilege
such as an assembly or
th
th
excursion field trip. 6 and 7
graders on the LOP list at the
end of the year will carry over to
the next year. They also run the
th
risk of not participating in 8
grade optional activities which
are a privilege. There is no
petitioning for removal from the
LOP list.
Community/School
Service
Through restorative justice we
empower students by having
them take responsibility for their
own actions by participating in
community/school service such
as campus and classroom
beautification. This service is
used for students to make
amends for their adverse effect
on the community.

Volunteers
Advisory Groups
PTA (Parent, Teacher Association)
The Hillsdale PTA is a great asset the school community.
The PTA Board is a very active group and needs parental

that come up during the school year. If you would be willing
to assist in any way, please call the Hillsdale Front Office.
School Site Council (SSC)
School Site Council (SSC) is an advisory group composed
of representative staff members, parents and students who
meet with the Principal regularly to discuss policy changes
and improvements to our school. This group also reviews
the expenditures of School Improvement Funds allocated
by the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The SSC is
consulted on matters relative to the goals and objectives of
the school as outlined in Hillsdale’s School Plan. Interested
parents are always welcome to attend the meetings.
English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC)
The ELAC is comprised of representatives from parents
and staff who meet monthly to discuss curricular issues
involving our English Language Learners and their families.
Interested parents are encouraged to contact our Bilingual
Program Facilitator, Ms. Meade or Mrs. Toshia Bartley,

decorating for the promotion ceremony. These meetings
take place once a month after school beginning in
February 2017. If you have any questions regarding the
promotion committee commitment and responsibilities,
please contact the front office.
Parent Volunteers
The education of our students is
best achieved when there is a
partnership between home and
school. Parents are always
welcome to visit Hillsdale Middle
School at anytime. If the
purpose of a visit is to meet with
a teacher or administrator, an
appointment is recommended.
Please call at least one day in
advance to schedule a visit.
Upon arrival at school, we ask
that parents report to the office
to sign in and receive a visitor
badge. The Principal, Assistant

Emergency Drills and Procedures
FIRE AND EMERGENCY DRILLS: In all drills, follow these procedures:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Students are to follow the instructions of their teacher.
Drills are to be carried out in a quiet, orderly manner.
Students are to leave the room in a single file line.
Students are to return to the classroom, when instructed by the teacher, after the all-clear from an
administrator.
5. Should the fire alarm sound during lunch or between classes, students are to report to the
location on the field where their zero period teacher assembles.
6. Drills may be and have been unannounced to students and families in order for authorities to
observe authentic reactions of students and staff during lockdowns and evacuations.
7. Treat every drill as the real thing.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
During a crisis, Hillsdale Middle School staff will implement the Crisis Response Plan for that particular
emergency. Students will be responsible for following the directions of all staff members. Staff members
have been trained and will know the correct response to any crisis. Students also will be taught the
correct response to emergency situations.
Hillsdale Middle School has a Crisis Response Plan to deal with emergencies, including earthquakes,
fires, bomb threats, active shooter on campus, intruder on campus, or any disaster. Each response
includes procedures for safely evacuating students from classrooms and for articulating with law
enforcement or other emergency agencies. The school has a plan for uniting students with their parents,
setting up a first aid center, establishing a command center, and providing for the comfort and security
of students.
21
Should there be an emergency, students need to know:
1.
What do students do during an emergency?
Follow the directions of staff members, since they are trained to handle emergencies. If you
are without a staff member to direct you, remember what you have been taught and follow
the emergency procedures to the best of your ability.
2.
How will I be reunited with my parents?
During an emergency situation, the school will establish a Family Reunion Area where
parents can pick up their children. Only parents/guardians or others listed on the
permanent record card may pick up a student. However, they must have identification.
3.
What happens when a student needs their medication which is kept in the office?
All student medications will be taken to the First Aid Center, so students needing their
medication will have it available.
4.
What happens if my parents are unable to pick me up?
During an emergency situation, students who are still at school at the end of the day (3:30
p.m.) would be released to the Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department would reunite
children with their parents. In the case of a severe disaster/emergency, Hillsdale Middle
School will follow the directions of the Cajon Valley Union School District Emergency
Operations Plan. All students will be cared for until reunited with their parents or placed in
the care of the appropriate emergency agency.
Initiating fire alarms without cause will result in severe disciplinary action, possibly involving law
enforcement. Disruptive behavior during a drill will result in a referral, or other disciplinary
action.

12 STEPS OF SUCCESS
1.
BE THERE. Successful people go to work regularly. They tend to work longer hours than less
successful people. Remember, right now going to school is your work.
2.
BE ON TIME. People who are successful are always on time. Others count on them to be
prompt and dependable.
3.
BE FRIENDLY. Successful people become successful because they practice kindness. To be
friendly is to accept the differences of others.
4.
BE POLITE. Be courteous. Successful people are polite people. They treat others with respect.
They listen when others are talking. They wait their turn. They consider the feelings of others.
They wait to be called upon in class.
5.
BE PREPARED. Bring everything you need to class. Successful people take good care of their
equipment, and they have the equipment they need when they go to work.
6.
BE A LISTENER. Successful people listen to instructions and follow directions. By listening,
successful people can cooperate for success.
7.
BE A DOER. Successful people are doers. They know the more they do, the more they will
know how to do. Practice and participation strengthen successful people.
8.
BE A HARD WORKER. Keep trying. Successful people keep working even when things get
difficult. Hard times never last, but successful people do.
9.
BE A RISK TAKER. Show courage. Ask questions. Successful people are willing to run the
risk of failure in their pursuit of a goal.
10.
BE A SUCCESS. Successful people are achievers. They complete their projects, turn them in on
time, and feel good when they have finished their work.
11.
BE SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF OTHERS.
12.
BEFORE ARRIVING AT A JUDGMENT, STOP TO THINK. The successful person is able
to say to him/herself, “Hold on a minute here, am I reacting too quickly?”
24
