This Month’s Cover Photos
This month’s cover features two of the young bright stars in Western Sector bocce. They, along with
Jose Botto of Detroit, Michigan, the National Men’s Singles Champion, will travel to Rome, Italy to compete
in the World Singles Championships from April 19th to the 26th. We wish good luck to all three.
Navina Bernardi - National Women’s Singles Champion
Navina started playing bocce when the new Campo di Bocce
in Livermore opened about 7
years ago. She, her older brother
Joey and Dad would go over to
Campo di Bocce and, little by little, we learned to play punto, raffa, volo (prv). Having played
sports since she was 5 years old,
including soccer, softball and
competing for her high school on
the tennis team, she has always
been very competitive and, I think more important,
very tough-minded.
Nothing bothers her in the moment. She
learned PRV very quickly and began to progress at it.
At 14 years old, she made the USA Women’s brass
ball squad and headed off to Bevagna, Italy. Looking
back at it now, that was a wonderful experience for
her. Having played in many of our local tournaments,
she really enjoys the competition, but also the camaraderie and friendships she has made over the years.
With the dates of the World Championships in
Rome finally being announced, she has set her practice schedule to fit in between her schooling, and she
will be ready to go come April 19th. She will also be
able to get in a couple of PRV tournaments that are
currently on the schedule. At 20 years old and a junior
at USC enrolled in the Marshall School of Business,
Navina has learned how to manage her time well without compromising any schooling work. She will be
heading to Rome as the youngest USA Women’s
champion in history and she is very excited about the
opportunity.
The only advice that she has received from older brother Joey, who competed at the exact same
venue 4 years ago as the USA Under 21 Champion
was this: “The name on the front of the Jersey (USA)
means a whole lot more than the name on the back!!!”
Good luck to Jose, Drew and Navina.
Drew Page - National Under 21 Champion
Drew Page is 22 years
old from Stockton, CA. He has
been playing bocce since the
age of 6. Drew started playing
in a kids league in 1999 at the
Italian Athletic Club with his
two older sisters, while his
grandparents played with the
adults.
From the first time he
picked up a bocce ball Drew
has been a natural at the sport;
from playing on a weekly kids team, being coached
by Albert Leonardi, to playing in multiple tournaments
and national tournaments. Drew is a natural bocce
player and is known for being an on point shooter.
After numerous tournaments with the kids league, he
played in the 2004 nationals and took 2nd place. He
loved the taste of victory. He then went on to continue playing bocce while attending high school, and at
the age of 16, he played in the 2009 nationals under
21 division and took the silver.
In 2010, Drew played in the St. Louis, Mo. Nationals but didn’t place. He continued to practice to
better his game to be able to once again play in the
2013 Nationals. The nationals were held in Stockton,
California at the Italian Athletic Club. He participated
once again. This time he was 20, had more practice
under his belt and took the GOLD. Drew and his
family were very proud of him (he also played on a 4
person money team at the nationals which took first
place) Taking the gold medal meant he would be
able to play in world championships, which is what
he has wanted since he started and was throwing
bocce balls in the back yard, saying he was ready.
So, after playing bocce since 1999, Drew has
the great honor of playing in the world championships in Rome, Italy, in April 2015. As of now, Drew
is practicing daily and doing all he can to prepare for
his trip to Italy. He could not be more excited for this
opportunity to represent the United States along with
Navina Bernardi and Jose Botto. He knows what an
honor it is and looks forward to doing all he can to
place for the United States.

HERE’S HOW I SEE IT
WE’RE OFF
AND RUNNING!
By Dario Bernardi
President, USBF Western Sector
We had our first official meeting as the new officers
of the Western Sector a couple of weeks ago and, with
my trusty companions beside me; Madam Vice President
Margaret Shindelus, Madam Secretary Ursula Hansen
and Madam Treasurer Cynthia Rivera, we said goodbye
to 2014, thanked Vern and his staff and got straight to
work.
The 2015 tournament schedule has been completed and approved. Please check it out as there are a couple of new events on it that are sure to be fun.
We elected our 5 allotted populous directors for the
Western Sector; Laura De La Rosa, Frank Rivera, Ben
Musolf, Nancy Martignago and Vern Cooper. I am very
pleased with this group of bocce enthusiasts. Thank you
to them for helping out.
We now have 3 regions that make up the Western
Sector. We have Robert Castagnola as the Southern
regional Director, and Larry Cereghino as the Northwest
regional Director. I will be the Central region Director. We
are hoping that this will enhance our long range plan of
helping to grow the sport. The USBF sphere of influence will expand to more western states and still funnel
thru the Western Sector President. I am looking forward
to good things from Robert and continued good things
from Larry.
Don’t forget that the Western Sector Open championship is early this year. It is scheduled for Sat, Feb 7th in
Stockton at the Waterloo Gun and Bocci Club. Please
keep in mind that this is one of the FEW chances we
have to support the Western Sector directly, so get a
team together and go play!!
On the membership front…..we had a good discussion on this matter. The ‘WHATS IN IT FOR ME’ question
has come up again and again. So ‘here’s what’s in it for
you’:
If you choose to become a member, you support
not only the USBF, but our efforts as well….The Special
Olympic-WORLD GAMES are coming to LA in late July.
There are some 175 countries coming to compete. We
don’t have an exact count on how many will be playing
bocce, but it will be a big number, that’s for sure. We
have been asked by Dave Dill, who is the Director of
Special Olympics in Los Angeles, to help out in our
event. He will need volunteers, score board help, some
teaching and mentoring, etc. I told Dave that we will be
happy to help in any way we can. This is going to be a
huge event and ESPN will be televising from there as
well. It is a great chance to promote our sport and be part
of this wonderful event. Updates will continue as the date
gets closer.
We are also looking into getting into schools and
boys and girls clubs. We would love to start some kind of
training program for kids who seem to really like the
game and want to learn the game. Also, more training for
the elite players who would like to compete at a higher
level.
I personally stated at this meeting that I am mailing
applications directly to family members and friends asking them to support me and my efforts in our venue.
I would personally like to ask all of you who are
reading this newsletter to do the same. Please mail an
application directly to people you know. Perhaps write a
quick note asking them for their support. Even if they
know nothing about bocce, this would be a great introduction for them. Please consider this!! Thank you!!
So……..’what’s in it for me’……well it’s the same
thing that’s in it for me. It’s the satisfaction of supporting
our efforts. It’s knowing we are helping out in local communities. It’s seeing our USA Women’s National Team
compete with class and grace in China. It’s knowing that
all 4 of these Women are part of our Western Sector. I’ve
said this before and I will say it again, there is NOTHING
in sports that can compare to wearing a jersey that has
USA on the front…NOTHING!! It’s an incredible feeling.
The Western Sector is currently home to 2 of the 3
National champions as well. Drew Page, who is from
Stockton and is the current Under 21 USA National
Champion, and Navina Bernardi, who is from Pleasanton
and is the current USA Women’s National Champion.
The current men’s champion is Jose Botto and he is from
Detroit. They will be heading off to compete in the World
Championships soon and I know they will appreciate all
of our support.
I am looking forward to competing in a few tournaments. As always, please say hello if you see me. And as
always, if you have any questions or comments, please
feel free to ask.
Thank you - Dario
After six years as Western Sector President, Vern Cooper
passed the gavel to Dario Bernardi. A short presentation and
gift given to Vern during the meeting afforded Vern the opportunity to thank the board as well as the Western Sector members for helping him to move the sector forward.

ROSS ON RULES
MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS
PRIVILEGES
By John Ross
Past President, USBF
The new Western Sector Tournament schedule was just
released. It was somewhat puzzling to see a heading at
the top of the schedule that read: "United States Bocce
Federation membership required at all Raffa and Western
Sector Championship Tournaments. Membership recommended for Open."
One might ask why this statement puzzles the author.
One could read into the statement that membership is optional to play in open tournaments. A little history may help
explain. In 2000 the Western Sector was the envy of the
bocce world. The Sector had just sponsored a friendly
competition hosted by Campo di Bocce of Los Gatos with
men's and women's teams from the United States, France,
Italy and China in attendance. The event was quite spectacular and the president of the CMSB, Mr. A. Lagier Bruno, was in attendance at the event. The CMSB is the highest governing body for all of bocce and also represents all
disciplines of the sport at the world and Olympic level.
Shortly after this event some disgruntled Western Sector
bocce players decided to form a new organization to represent our sport. They named the new entity the American
Bocce Association or ABA for short. The ABA signed up
some Western Sector clubs and issued its own membership card. This rift or schism caused many hard feelings
among players loyal to the USBF and those loyal to the
ABA. Some clubs required an ABA card in order to play.
Other clubs required USBF cards in order to play. Some
clubs joined both organizations and accepted both cards.
The bottom line was that a player had to be a member of
one or the other organization in order to play in any tournament in the central region of the Western Sector. Some
players became members of both the USBF and the ABA in
order to be eligible play in all of the tournaments in the Bay
Area. The USBF national board of directors even voted to
ban officers of the ABA from renewing their memberships in
the USBF! This aggravated the situation and created even
more hard feelings. This confusion or insanity lasted from
2001 until 2006 when the USBF board voted at the board
meeting in St. Louis to accept all ABA members and bury
the hatchet so to speak. Some ABA officers re-joined the
USBF right away and most of the ABA members soon followed.
There is a silver lining in every cloud. Because of the
turmoil during those years when two organizations were
competing for members, it became automatic and ingrained
in every bocce player that in order to play in a tournament
they had to have a current membership in one or the
other organization. This mind-set carried on after 2006 and
USBF cards were required for all sanctioned open or raffa
tournaments. Membership in the USBF Western Sector
grew to 884 by 2008 and all tournament players carried a
current USBF card. The sport of bocce was growing by
leaps and bounds not only in the west but also in other
parts of the United States. New clubs were springing up
and introducing new players to the sport. Somewhere
along the way membership started to decline. A lot of the
new players joined the USBF in their enthusiasm for the
sport but settled in to become more casual players and did
not renew their memberships. There are other reasons for
the decline in membership, but that is beyond the scope of
this article.
In 2013 the Western Sector board voted to require
USBF membership to play in sanctioned raffa tournaments,
but not in sanctioned open tournaments. Many open players who had been long time members of the USBF and had
experienced the membership competition that took place
between the ABA and the USBF early in this century were
insulted by this new policy. Some felt that the USBF looked
down on open players as second-class members of the
organization. It made no sense to them that membership in
the USBF was required to play in raffa tournaments but not
in open tournaments. Many were hurt by this policy and did
not renew their memberships in 2013. The USBF lost 267,
or 40% of the members in the Western Sector in 2013.
Open players really do count! The Western Sector board
saw the drastic decline in membership in 2013 and corrected their mistake. They fixed the problem for 2014 voting to
require USBF membership to play in all sanctioned open
and raffa tournaments.
One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over
and over hoping for a different result. Yes, the Western
Sector board voted in November of 2014 to once again
make membership a requirement to play in sanctioned raffa
tournaments but not sanctioned open tournaments. One of
the arguments used by the proponents of this policy is that
some of their members only play in one tournament and
don't feel that they need a membership in the USBF to play
at their home club.
The key term that has been used in this discussion is
"sanctioned" tournaments. Policy until 2013 was that in
order to have a club's tournament "sanctioned" and listed
on the Western Sector Bocce Schedule, membership in the
USBF was mandatory for players at these tournaments.
The schedule is a very valuable marketing tool for clubs to
make players aware of their tournaments. Some clubs now
join the USBF and gain a seat on the Western Sector
board. They can make motions and vote on policy for the
sector. Sometimes the motions may not be in the best interest of the sector but more specific to the interests of the
club. One problem is that some of these clubs only have a
few members but have the same vote as clubs with dozens
of members. This is a problem that should be addressed,
but is also beyond the scope of this article.
As a backlash to the policy re-introduced for 2015, several clubs will ignore the policy and require membership in
the USBF in order to play in both raffa and open tournaments. The following clubs have taken this stand: Italian
American Citizens Club of South San Francisco; Peninsula
Italian American Social Club of San Mateo; Italian Athletic
Club of Stockton; Waterloo Gun and Bocci Club of Stockton; and Los Gatos Bocce Club. Perhaps more clubs will
look at the situation and take the same action. Please consider renewing your membership and take a stand on this
issue. Support the clubs that embrace USBF members in
both open and raffa tournaments. Membership has its privileges. One of those privileges is the right to play in sanctioned tournaments!

Pensieri e Riflessioni
Thoughts and Reflections by Frank Rivera
I MISS THE GUY ALREADY
AN INVALUABLE GROUP
Well, Vern Cooper has been the Past Western Sector President for less than a month now, and I miss him
already, even though I’ve seen him several times since he
gave up the gavel. Yeah, I miss working with him, but not
in the way you’d think. The truth is, Vern was a real pain in
my butt! You don’t know the hell he drove me through
when dealing with him in regards to the newsletter.
More often than not, his Page 2 contribution to the
newsletter was the last article I received from anybody;
and I got it only after emailing him threatening words or
pictures asking him to “...please send me Page 2.” But in
reality, it was somewhat of a game between the two of us.
We’d send insults back and forth for a few days, then the
newsletter would get issued; maybe a day or two later
than I had hoped, but
issued
nevertheless.
Yeah… I miss working
with Vern. He gave me
a good reason to drink
vino rosso.
Note to Dario
Bernardi: The above
two paragraphs are in
no way a suggestion
that you should adopt
Vern’s
methods
of
working with the newsletter. Getting your
“Here’s How I See It”
column two weeks in
advance of deadline is
soooo refreshing!
The newsletter editorial board has done a fantastic
job catching all my mistakes over the past few years. We
started out with just Vern and Jerry South on the board,
but have added some people since then.
Chris Bond and Larry Cereghino joined the board a
few months after startup and have both done a great job.
Now that he’s Western Sector President and ultimately
responsible for the newsletter content, Dario Bernardi is
now on the board. There’s one more board member I must
mention: Theresa Robarge.
Theresa is from the Downey Bocce Club in Southern California. She joined the board about a year ago. The
woman is brutal. She catches it all and lets me know every
last mistake down to the use of a comma versus a semicolon. She keeps me on my toes. Thank you, Theresa.
I send out my hearty thanks to Vern, Jerry, Larry,
Chris, Theresa, and new board member Dario for keeping
me honest. I can’t do it without you, guys.
Vern Cooper
HE WAS NO HELP TO ME ANYWAY
Vern was one of the first guys on the editorial board.
The main job of the editorial board is to check over a proof
copy of the newsletter just prior to issue. Being one who
types with only my two index fingers, I have a habit of
making some pretty boneheaded mistakes, and I rely on
the editorial board to find them for me. I would send the
proof to Vern and a few hours later, he’d send me an
email with a short “Another fine job.” I bet he didn’t even
check for mistakes. He probably just looked at all the pictures. Did I mention bonehead mistakes?
In one issue, I mis-captioned a photo of Vern’s wife
Sharon. I accidentally named her Shirley. Vern didn’t catch
it and the issue went out with the mistake intact. Luckily,
Sharon has a sense of humor. “I don’t care what you call
me,” she said, “as long as you don’t call me the name of
his ex-wife.”
Yep. It was a fun two and a half years trying to
squeeze Page Two out of Vern and getting little to no help
with the proof-reading. I’ll miss working with him…. but not
that much. Welcome aboard, Dario.
A SLOW NEWS MONTH? NOT HARDLY
It would seem that January, with only one tournament on the schedule, should be easy for us here at the
Western Sector Newsletter offices, but I’ve been burning
the midnight oil. I’ve been in an adrenaline rush trying to
get two, count ‘em, two publications out on time.
Now that Jerry South is the USBF President, he
wants to start a fairly regular national publication; something that’s been rather sporadic these last few years.
It won’t be very much like our little news sheet here.
For starters, it will come out only four times a year; Winter,
Spring, Summer and Fall. And it won’t be nearly as big. No
local tournament reports; just the big stuff. National and
International tournaments. Along with some other things,
such as big regional tournaments, highlighting clubs and
bocce venues, as well as informative articles on the various federation officers, it is meant to be to the entire USBF
what the Western Sector Newsletter is to us. Something
we can look to for bocce information on a wider scale beyond our own clubs.
GOOD LUCK TO OUR
THREE BRIGHT STARS
Good luck to two of the Western Sector’s best,
Navina Bernardi from Pleasanton, and Drew Page from
Stockton; and to Jose Botto of Detroit Michigan on their
quest for Gold in Rome this coming April.

2000 Friendly
USA, China, France, Italy
By Andrea Ross
I know Frank has photos from the archives but his
archives only go back a few years. I thought I would
delve into my own bocce archives. Some of my first
bocce photos are of the "friendly" between China,
France, Italy and the USA. It was organized by the
western sector and hosted by Campo di Bocce Los Gatos. It took place in October 2000. It was nothing but
fun from the very first minute!
It was the first time most of us had a chance to
see punto raffa volo played on such a high level. The
French outdid themselves. The French ladies put on a
demonstration of volvo speed shooting. There was plenty of French wine from the Fitou appellation in southeastern France. With a lot of pomp and pageantry several of
us were inducted as "Chevaliers" of Fitou.
The most memorable time was the night we had
the Chinese for dinner. Some of the women on the US
team found out that the Chinese team had no plans for
dinner. It was decided to have a backyard barbeque at
our house. After a quick trip to the store and a lot of
scrambling around in the kitchen we had enough food for
an army.
The Chinese were fascinated by our home. They
did a slow tour and took turns posing like Vanna White in
front of appliances. The washer and dryer were the biggest hit.
Over dinner, we were introduced to a drinking
game that involved a coin toss. Whoever lost had to
drink to cheers of "ganbei" and the "Ole, Ole" song. Just
as that was in full swing the Italian group marched in
lead by John Chiappe playing his accordion. Everyone
grabbed a partner and started to dance. We did the polka and the waltz. There was line dancing, break dancing
and even the limbo. Everyone went home exhausted
and happy. It was a magical evening!

moved in I wanted to get involved in Bocce having noticed
two Bocce Courts while we were looking at homes. I soon
learned there wasn’t an active Bocce program, so in March
2013 I decided to coordinate one for the community.
The Original Eight
L to r, sitting: Phil Rees, Helen Rees, Carol Adkins, Dallas Adkins.
Standing: Bonnie Klassen, Grant Klassen.
Missing: Marion Hickman and Warren Hickman
I marketed the new Bocce program to start in the fall
of 2013. I put out flyers and announcements in our monthly
newsletter “The Mountaineer” (www.mbvaz.org). I joined the
United States Bocce Federation (USBF) as an individual to
have support if needed. I eventually did need to contact our
Western Sector President for a rule interpretation and that
was very helpful.
I fretted over the start of the very first game day.
Would anyone show up or would I be playing alone? On the
first Bocce day we had eight people show up including my
husband and me. It was perfect because we could play
doubles on one of our courts. They were all new to the
sport, but picked it up quickly. Those same players are still
playing with us and are among the most experienced players now. They have become mentors to other players just
starting out. I offered a Bocce introductory class during the
first year before each game. I teach the USBF Open Rules.
We held Bocce on one day a week for two hours the
first year. The most we had on game day the first year were
18 players. With 18 players I had to introduce them to triples using 12 balls on one of the courts. By the end of the
first season 41 players were on the active roster.
In fall of 2014 we continued to grow and add new
players. It was necessary during the second season to add
one more Bocce day. We currently play from 9:30-11:30 on
Wednesdays and Fridays (we have organized play from November through April). On Wednesdays we have a community barbecue “Canyon Cookout” that begins right after we
finish playing. Most of the players stay for the barbecue to
socialize as a group. We now regularly have 22-24 players
on game days. The maximum we can play on the two
courts is 24 (triples).
Our Bocce courts are in need of an update. They are
currently made of golf putting synthetic turf over ¼” minus
crushed aggregate. The turf was added over the aggregate
about six years ago and the courts have not been leveled
since. We also have deteriorating side boards and the
courts are narrow. I have been working with our Building
and Grounds Committee and HOA (Home Owners Association) to request upgrades.
There are other Active Adult Communities in the
Phoenix area with really big Bocce programs and new stateof-the-art concrete Bocce courts. One community about 12
miles west of us in Mesa is Valle del Oro. We were invited
there once last year and again this year to participate in a
Round Robin event. It was fun for our Bocce players to experience their nice courts.
It has been a very rewarding volunteer retirement activity for me. As a former teacher I cannot help but educate
and spread the “Joy of Bocce.” It is something I hope to be
able to do for a long time.

Methuen Sons of Italy
Lodge 902
is proudly hosting the
2015 US Bocce National Championships
from June 22 – June 27
Over 150 Elite Bocce Players to Shine at the Nationals which are being held in New
England for the First Time ever. In fact this is the first time the games are being
played east of Ohio!
4 Bocce Events will be played over the course of the week. Those include an Open Tournament with a $4000 Grand
Prize and separate Open National Tournaments with the top place teams earning a medal or trophy for the A and B
Divisions. “Open” Bocce is a type of game that people are most familiar with. Some main characteristics of the
game are that players can use the side boards to angle their shots and they can hit their own or their opponent’s
bocce balls at anytime and in any location on the court. For all 3 of these tournaments, the teams will consist of 4
players, which can be all men, all women or mixed.
The 4th Championship Bocce Tournament is Punto Raffa Volo (PRV), an internationally recognized bocce
game. These teams will be competing for the distinguished honor to play in the 2015 World Bocce Championships! The members of the first place team will only have to pay their airfare to arrive in the host country (TBA),
then once there, all expenses will be paid for by the the host.
In Punto Raffa Volo, players have to be extremely precise and actually “call their shots,” much like in some billiards
games. Invalid throws result in balls being removed from the court without a chance of scoring points with them,
or otherwise know as a “dead ball.” The location of where the pallino or other bocce balls are located on the court
dictates the specific style of shot that the next player will make.
This year’s Punto Raffa Volo Tournament format is played by “Teams.” This simply means that 3 or 4 person teams
can be made up of anyone, including all men or all women or mixed, and they don’t need to belong to the same
club. In other years, “Clubs” teams compete against each other, and still in other years, “Singles” play PRV Tournaments. In “Clubs,” all teammates are members of the same club and in “Singles,” there are 3 divisions – Men, Women, Under 21. One person from each group will be crowned champion and represent the USA in the World Games.

POLICY FOR INCLUSION OF NON-USBF MEMBER
TOURNAMENT APPLICATIONS
The policy of the Western Sector Newsletter is that we will gladly list non-USBF sanctioned tournaments on our Upcoming Tournaments section and display applications for those tournaments hosted
by non-USBF member clubs as long as the date of those non-member tournaments do not conflict
with a date on which a USBF sanctioned tournament will be held.
Even if a non-USBF member club tournament is not promoted in our Upcoming Tournaments section
due to this conflict, we will gladly post photos of those tournaments in the next issue of this newsletter
immediately following the month in which the tournament took place.
If you wish to have your tournament represented in this newsletter, please make every effort to provide us with the winners photos with the names of the winners from left to right as they appear in the
photo. Please feel free to provide as many photos as you wish of your tournament during play. The
newsletter editor will determine how many photos to use based on available space in the newsletter.
If you wish to provide written commentary, please make that commentary no longer than 300 words,
or approximately 1/2 page, using the Arial font at size 10.
