During a day day-long Seminar on Service Tax organized by The
Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry and graced by S. K.
Panda, IRS, Chief Commissioner of Service Tax, Kolkata Zone,
towards the end of inaugural session T B Chatterjee,
Chairperson, Indirect Tax Committee, The Bengal Chamber &
Chief Corporate Officer, Legal & Corporate Affairs, DIC India
Ltd. , speaking on ‘Key trends in indirect tax as precursor to
GSTC’ sprung this idea upon the gathered. It all started when
he queried “Does anybody know the worth of Wal-Mart? After
establishing albeit wrongfully that its one-fourth of India’s
GDP (Actual figures – Wal-Mart’s net worth: $144.7 billion
India’s GDP: close to Rs two T or $ 29.79 billion), he
mentioned that the retail behemoth has no warehousing but
direct company-distributor touch-point. If one follows that
system then one can transfer goods with only 3 central
warehouses in the entire country, thus saving on tax on interstate good transfer. “GSTC is a tool to reduce tax. To save
tax talk to business consultants – logistic, marketing and
procurement team and not the taxation head. They will cut
costs to help save tax; taxation department is there only to
compute”, he added.
Earlier in his technical he had said that no separate central
and state GSTC will be levied for inter-state transfer of
goods or funds but is now replaced by IGST. The taxation
system has been so modified that it will be upon supplier and
receiver to keep tab on each transaction between them else
they will not be able to file for tax. The system is watertight that “government can go to sleep. The headache is now
with them”, said, BCCI Chairperson of ITC. He also went on to
say “There has been a shift in taxation outlook from being a
manufacturing-based tax to a consumption-based tax as there
are few manufacturing pockets but consumers all pan-country.
Because of this WB can expect a 80% increment in its
collections from tax”.
The rest of the seminar comprising six more sessions delved in
depth on new amendments under Finance Act 2016, recent and
important Court judgments, Finance Act 2016Cenvat Credit &
reverse charge, exemptions, negative list & rules for Place of
Provision of Services, Service Tax on Real Estate Transactions
and Works Contract and other sectional issues in Service Tax
including Mining, IT& Software, Leasing, Restaurants, Hotels,
Banking & Finance, Intellectual Property, Intermediaries etc.
Manjul and Rohan To
Rescue Of A Leopard
The
Kolkata|
Those who were quite taken up by the striking friendship
between Manjul and Rohan in Anjana Basu’s ‘In the Shadow of
Leaves , the first book in the Jim Corbett series, may satiate
their inquisitiveness in the just-launched second offering,
‘Leopard in the Laboratory’.
The book was released in the presence of actor and wildlife
expert Sabyasachi Chakravarty, wildlife expert Rishin BasuRoy, social communicator Mira Kakkar, and Rahul Dey.
In the latest caper the duo go on to greater adventures with
Carpet Sahib, Corbett’s ghost. And the challenge this time is
to save a leopard as it is pushed out of the shrinking forests
of Rudraprayag due to incessant felling of trees.
On her new title, Anjana Basu commented, “Kumaon was chosen
simply because it was Jim Corbett country – the same
background as ‘In the Shadow of the Leaves’. By demonstrating
how wild animals and people interact, without lecturing, and
through an interesting story, the message of conservation is
conveyed. Leopards are very different from tigers and the
combination of ghosts, leopards and children is fun to work
with – I hope both children and adults will enjoy it.”
Anupama Jauhry, Head, TERI Press said, “This tussle between
the innocence of the children against the rationale of adults
has been magically interwoven into this story by Anjana. TERI
publications address and raise awareness about the current
environmental concerns plaguing our planet.
The title can be purchased from the TERI Press website,
Flipkart and Amazon. The e-book version is also available on
Amazon, Google books and Kindle.
Excerpt from the book:
Manjul finds a calf has been killed and people are saying that
there is a leopard on the loose. While walking through the
forest Manjul is cornered by the leopard. However, a
mysterious man, Carpet Sahib, rescues her in the nick of time.
In the aftermath of the incident, Manjul fears for the
leopard.

“Si, Si, Si “, the catch-phrase uttered by current WWE champ
on or while felling his opponents were parked on the lips of
thousands that had gathered to catch a glimpse of the 6’5”,
239 wrestling royalty and each time he was sighted – be it on
way to stage, going in or coming out of the media room or
hoping into his ride to leave, that very phrase was rendered
up in the air.
“I am a big fan of football; after WWE it’s my second love and
to be welcomed on soccer field is a pleasant experience for
me. I’m loving it”., said Alberto
Del Rio who hails
originally from San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
Though he refused to demonstrate a ‘dry’ move disappointing
the horde who would have gone hoarse if he were to delve into
‘cross arm-breaker, his signature move, he did kick a soccer
ball busting out a fancy footwork no less. Later at the media
room the four-time champ proudly displayed his title belt to
the tremendous whir of flashlights. Here he was presented with
a memento, a scarf and a jersey and he returned the favor with
personalized El-Classico T-shirts to the four team members
present.
When IBG NSA asked which position he would prefer if he were
to play soccer, “I would be the forward so that I can go and
score goals”
“What about being a defender?”
“Well yes that too, why not”!
When time became ripe for him to leave, he did so to the
accompanying chant of “Si, Si,Si”.

Stone – Being And Becoming
Hosts City Rickshaw-Pullers
Kolkata|
Hasari Pal walked into The Harrington Street Arts Centre with
a thin, coarse, traditional cotton towel slung on his left
shoulders. Hasari, for the uninitiated, is a rickshaw-puller.
What then is his business in an art gallery? For answers let’s
turn to Kounteya Sinha who is having his photography
exhibition, – Being and Becoming, here and there are some
pictures of the said tribe taken by him. “They are synonymous
to Kolkata’s daily life and immortalized in celluloid for
years. But men who pull the emblematic two-wheeled contraption
– rickshaws in Kolkata have for long been social pariahs,
shunned and neglected. I wanted to honor them as Kolkata’s
‘real heroes’.” said the photographer.
1. But who is this Hasari?.
The City of Joy… Roland Joffe….. Om Puri……. his avatar moves
in with his family to Kolkata to start a new life, and then
becomes a rickshaw-puller in The City of Joy.
Ah ha!
The ‘First’ rickshaw-puller sauntered in his characteristic
style on June 26 to catch a glimpse of the display. “Rickshaw
is an intrinsic part of Kolkata’s history. It should never
die. It can be a massive tourist draw if Bengal markets them.
They can take tourists to the most interesting by-lanes of
Kolkata. Look at what Hong Kong has done with their rickshaws.
Even in Kolkata they should be allowed to function in areas
where they are not a hindrance.”, he who gets into the bones
of characters he essays knows and adds “I want to ask the
government who are talking about doing away with the
rickshaws. Have you sorted out your drainage system? In the
monsoons, nothing moves in Kolkata besides these rickshaws.
The government should provide an alternate plan to rickshawpullers of the city for their survival”
The gathered – 50 rickshaw-pullers specially invited, actor
Swastika Mukherjee, Anjum Katyal, Dr Rupali Basu President and
CEO Apollo Hospitals, director of Oxford Bookstore Maina
Bhagat and countless others, could only listen in awe as he
continued, “Rickshaws are synonymous to Kolkata. Every
photograph, memorabilia and cinema have immortalized them – be
it the movie version of the City of Joy or the greatest works
of Mrinal Sen. The irony however is that the men who pull
these rickshaws are among the city’s most unimportant and
neglected people who have no identity, no recognition and are
not part of anybody’s plan. This has to change. Kolkata has to
do for them what Mumbai has done for the dabbawalahs”
On her turn Swastika echoed, “I think it is a wonderful idea
and thought by Kounteya to pay tribute to the rickshaw-pullers
of Kolkata. They are an intrinsic part of the city. We still
rely on the honest and trust worthy rickshaw-pullers when we
come home at night and there are no other conveyances
available.”
Om it was learned would greatly cherish a screening of The
City of Joy with the rickshaw-pullers.

Are you the one that arranges your Sunday lunch to coincide
with Sunday Suspense or the one that stalls the vehicle to sit
through the episode. Well you can still do that and might step
it up further with repeat pleasure at your will.
To commemorate its seventh year Sunday Suspense released the
audio-play of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s third crime novel, The
Hound amidst its voice-lenders and pogramme facilitators –
Sandip Ray, Chiranjit, Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Sreelekha,
Paran Bandopadhyay, Sudipta Chakraborty, Jaganath Basu,
UrmiMala Basu, Debsahitya Kutir and Rupa Majumder.
Actor Parambrata Chatterjee, radio-drama virgin till this
project has lent his voice to Henry Baskerville.
Sherlock Holmes needless to say has a universal appeal, has
spawned many clones including a tropicalized version and in
the elected story has reached an uber iconic status. This
almost 5-hour long drama with its copy-book thriller bells and
whistles is closely echoed in this vernacular effort and may
make for a filled-out entertainment during rain bound-in days.
