Robbie Burns Country
Ayrshire is probably most famous for being home to where Robert Burns was born. There are
many tourist attractions relating to Robert Burns but the two closest to Sornhill are the
following:
Burns National Heritage Park

This park includes many attractions such as the Burn’s Cottage and Museum, Tam O’Shanter experience, Burn’s
Monument, Brig O’Doon and Alloway Old Kirk. There is also a gift shop and free car parking.
Mauchline
The village of Mauchline is approx 10 minutes from the cottage. In it you will find Burn’s House Museum, Burn’s
Memorial Tower, Highland Mary’s Monument, Poosie Nansie’s Tavern and Mauchline Castle.
Golf
When it comes to Golf, Ayrshire has more to offer than any other part of Scotland.
There are no less than three Open Championship Courses:
Royal Troon
Craigend Road,
Troon,
KA10 6EP
Tel: 01292 311555 - Approx 20 minutes drive

There are also great Municipal courses such as those at Troon ( Fullerton, Lochgreen and The Darley). We recently
played these courses ourselves and found them to be most enjoyable and good value for money with the average
green fee at approximately £20.
Castles
Ayrshire has an abundance of castles and country parks, here are a few that we would recommend you take time
to visit:
Culzean Country Park
Situated 12 miles south of Ayr. The country park is open all year round and the castle is open from April to
October. Entry to the castle and park costs £23 per family and entry to the park only costs £13.50 per family.
Approx 45 minutes drive
Blairquhan Castle
Situated 14 miles South East of Ayr, next to the small scenic village of Straiton. The area offers some of the best
hill-walking in Ayrshire. The castle is open during summer months only. Approximately a one hour drive.
Dean Castle & Country Park
Dean Castle is situated just north of Kilmarnock town centre, approx 5 miles from Sornhill. The grounds boast
beautiful woodland walks, has an adventure playground, a pets corner, a visitor centre and tearooms. There is
free entry to the park.
Opening hours are 11am to 5pm in the summer and 11am to 4pm in the winter.
