5. MODERN PLAYER MARAUDER PICKGUARD
You have received an assembled and tested Modern Player Marauder Pickguard upgrade designed to install
into a standard Fender Modern Player Marauder guitar. It is one of our growing family of revolutionary
TM
patented Pickup Switch Upgrade products. Although no soldering is needed to install this product, you may
find a low wattage (25W) soldering iron useful to “tin” stranded wires that are twisted to be tightly bundled to
stabilize the stranded wires. You will use your own pickups. The following items are included in a Parts Bag.
•
•
•
•
One 12” length of 22 gauge black insulated wire (to lengthen ground wire)
Two grey wire nuts (71B) to connect ground wires
Four labels to identify each pickup coil pair.
An AweSome Musical Instruments headstock decal to apply to your instrument
Preparation
Use a well-lit and uncluttered work area with padding (such as a blanket) between the guitar body and the work
area to prevent body scratches while performing the upgrade.
Upgrade Steps
The following steps will guide you in upgrading your Modern Player Marauder guitar with our MRP-T4
upgrade product.
Note: Removing the control plate with the Volume control, Tone control and input jack is not necessary.
1. Remove all 6 strings from the instrument.
2. Remove all 10 original pickguard attaching screws and set them in a safe place.
3. Remove all 4 Neck pickup height adjusting screws and set them in a safe place.
4. Lift the Neck pickup away from the body so you can remove the original pickguard. Push the Neck
pickup through the mounting hole of the original pickguard.
5. Pull the black plastic knob off the 5-way switch lever and set it in a safe place.
6. Position the 5-way switch lever into the middle position and remove the two attaching screws. You can
put the detached pickguard in a safe place. Install the two attaching screws back into the 5-way switch.
7. Cut all wires from the 5-way pickup switch so they are of maximum length. See Figure 2 – Original
Wiring and Figure 3 – 5-Way Switch Wiring Function for guidance.
8. Clip the Neck pickup wires (Black and Yellow) from the 5-way switch. Strip 3/16” (4.76mm) insulation
from the end of the wires and twist the wires so they are tightly bundled. You can elect to lightly “tin”
the wire bundle using a soldering iron to stabilize their tightly bundled arrangement.
9. Clip the wire with the black insulation sheath coming from the control plate Volume control terminal.
This shielded wire has a black outer sheath with silver braided shielding and a white colored insulation
center wire. Separate the braided shielding from the white center wire so that both the white center wire
and the braided shielding are 1” (2.54cm) long. Strip 3/16” (4.76mm) insulation from the end of the
white center wire and twist the wires so they are tightly bundled. You can lightly “tin” the center wire
bundle using a soldering iron.
10. Clip the Brown and Red wires attached to the 5-way switch that are part of the multi-conductor cable
with an outer gray sheath. Strip 3/16” (4.76mm) insulation from the end of each wire and twist the wires
so they are tightly bundled. You can lightly “tin” the wire bundle using a soldering iron.

11. Clip the ground connections coming from the multi-conductor cable with an outer gray sheath that is
soldered to the frame of the 5-way switch.
12. Use a sharp blade cutter to remove about 3” (7.62cm) from the end of the outer gray sheath of the multiconductor cable. Be careful to avoid damaging wire in the interior of this cable. See Figure 4 – Gray
Sheath Removal illustration.
13. Clip the solder bearing portion of the shield braid surrounding the multi-conductor cable to remove it.
Pull the individual shield braid wires to unbraid. See Figure 5 – Unraveling the Braided Shield.
14. Twist the braid wires so they are tightly bundled. Carefully unwrap the shielding foil from around the
wires and clip off the foil. See Figure 6 – Removing Foil Wrapping illustration.
15. Twist the following pickup coil wire pairs together and mark them with the included labels:
Coil #1: Blue (–) and Brown (+) the Bridge pickup coil closest to instrument’s bridge
Coil #2: Green (–) and White (+) the Bridge pickup coil in the middle
Coil #3: Black (–) and Red (+)
the Bridge pickup coil farthest from the instrument’s bridge
Coil #4: Black (–) and Yellow (+) the Neck pickup coil
16. Use an ohmmeter to confirm that each pickup coil wire pair shows continuity (some resistance will be
noted with each pickup coil pair.)
17. Cut the included 12” (30.48cm) Black wire into an 8” (20.32mm) length and a 4” (10.16mm) length.
Strip 3/16” (4.76mm) insulation from these wire ends and twist the wires so they are tightly bundled.
18. Twist one end of the 8” (20.32mm) black wire together with the braided shield coming from the gray
outer sheath to be tightly bundled. Attach the included gray wire nut (71B) onto the end of these wires
by twisting in a clockwise direction while pressing the gray wire nut – screwing it onto the wire pair.
19. Twist the following three wires: one end of the 4” (10.16mm) black wire together with the 8”
(20.32mm) black wire (see Step #18) to the braided shield coming from the volume control wire (see
Step #9). Twist these wires to they are tightly bundled. Attach the included gray wire nut (71B) onto the
end of these wires by twisting clockwise while pressing the gray wire nut – screwing it onto these three
wires. The loose 4” (10.16mm) black wire is connected to GND on the Green terminal strip.
20. Position all the wires so they are flat in the control cavity leading to the cavity where the original 5-way
switch was located. Confirm that the Marauder Pickguard Upgrade product you received will lay
completely flat and within the routed body cavity with no interference by the wood body. It is a tight fit
so you may need to loosen (but do not remove) the six switch locking nuts to shift the switch assembly
as needed, then retighten. You may need to dress the wire pairs so they are untwisted and lay flat on the
bottom of the body cavity. The pickguard mounting holes should match the holes in the guitar body.
Also see Solving Installation Issues at the end of this document.
21. Connect the following wires to the Green terminal strip (see “Green Terminal Strip” topic below for
information about its use).

Green Terminal Strip
Here is how to attach wires to the green terminal strip (J1) that is on the printed circuit board. Use a small
screwdriver or writing pen tip and completely press down on the square release button located directly above
the wire hole. Hold the button down and insert the stripped wire completely into the wire connection hole and
then release the button. Lightly tug on the wire to confirm it is firmly gripped by the Terminal Strip. A legend is
printed on the circuit board with the name of each terminal strip wire hole from left to right. Attach each wire to
the correct terminal strip hole. All the connections are displayed in Figure 7 – Connecting Wires To The Green
Terminal Strip to the wire connection holes on the terminal strip. The Green terminal strip wire hole designation
for each item (appearing from left to right) also appears on the printed circuit board.

Solving Installation Issues
It appears that Fender may not have imposed rigorous standards on their manufacturing partners in China,
Malaysia, Indonesia, Mexico, Korea, India, etc. Depending on the manufacturing factory, these instrument may
not have pickguard mounting holes in the position we encountered during our evaluation of this instrument.
Further, it is possible that these instruments may have a body cavity that is different than the body cavity size
we encountered during our evaluation of their instrument. It is possible that your instrument may have mounting
holes that do not line up or have an insufficient body cavity width and/or depth and may require some material
removal so the Marauder Pickguard Upgrade that you received will completely lay flat on the body.
Here is how to solve installation issues that involve either pickguard mounting holes that do not line up or
issues with insufficient body cavity width and/or depth.
1. Issue: The pickguard mounting holes for the Marauder Pickguard upgrade do not line up with the body
mounting holes.
Solution: You need to re-drill the needed body holes for the pickguard mounting holes.
2. Issue: The Marauder Pickguard Upgrade does not fit into the body cavity due to insufficient width or depth.
Solution: To solve these body cavity depth issues, you can use an electric drill with a rotary file to remove the
needed amount of material in the body cavity to permit installation.
The below illustration identifies how to use the electric drill and rotary file bit to remove excess material in the
body cavity. Also illustrated are two common rotary file bits. The top is a rasp bit, the lower is a scraping bit.
When using this procedure, it is recommended that you enlist the help of a friend to firmly hold the guitar body
while removing the unneeded wood using the rotary file. Also use a blanket or other material between the guitar
body and the working surface to prevent the bottom of the body from being scratched.
