Marian celebrates Fall Commencement
Dr. Steven DiSalvo gave his first welcome as the president of
Marian University at both fall commencement ceremonies.
Dr. DiSalvo congratulated the graduates on all of their
achievements and provided
words of encouragement as
they move forward in their
careers, “Today you will
venture forward with one
collective goal in hand: to
make the world a better
place. Your Marian education is a reminder that while
we strive to excel in our
respective careers, supreme
excellence comes only when we discover our true passion.
You have chartered a course that has taken you to the edge of
your future.”
The speaker for the Graduate Studies ceremony was Michelle
Lippart, a fall 2010 master’s degree graduate of Marian University. Lippart told graduates that students receive an education for a variety of reasons, and that Marian has prepared
each individual for success, “Now, we need to utilize our new
knowledge and abilities. We need to capitalize on our investments. We need to go out and set the world on fire…It is now
up to us to ignite our energies and those of others by doing
something different than we have always done.”
The student speaker
for the Undergraduate Studies ceremony was Sarah
Lawler, a middle
secondary math education major and a
fall 2010 graduate of
Marian.
Lawler
reflected upon the
past four years and
the help and support from faculty and staff that was received
by all, “Because of the faculty and staff members and all the
friends and experiences we have had at Marian, we enter the
world as better people and life-long learners.”
The ceremonies featured the graduation of 139 undergraduates and 128 master’s-degree recipients.

Ask any athlete, “What are the most difficult games to
play?” The likely response will be “away games.” If this
wasn’t true, the expression “Home Court Advantage”
wouldn’t be a part of our every day dialog. Therefore,
Marian University is calling on alumni, parents, students,
and fans to gather as both Marian University basketball
teams take on Benedictine University.
The Away Game Tailgate will be held INDOORS at the
Dan and Ada Rice Center located on Benedictine’s Campus (5700 College Road in Lisle, IL). Don your Marian
University colors, celebrate your Sabre Pride and relish in
a complete afternoon filled with food, beverage, camaraderie, prizes and victory!

Santas and the Dorcas Chapel bells
On a brisk morning in early December, Mr. Jim Nintzel presented Dr. Steven DiSalvo with a $3,000 gift to help offset the
cost of the new Marian University Dorcas Chapel bells. Recently, the University established a campaign to fund the replacement of the bells, which have not been heard since the

early part of the decade. On September 24, the bells rang for
the first time during Marian’s Homecoming Weekend. The
original bells had welcomed students and visitors alike for
many years and, unfortunately, became irreparable through
extended use and age. New, state-of-the-art bells now resonate
on campus with the help of remote speakers. Besides chiming
or playing tunes, the bells may be used as an alert system in the
event of weather or on-campus emergencies.
The donation was generated from Jim Nintzel’s Santa Auction
held on November 13 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel Ballroom.
Nintzel owned an amazing collection of decorative Santa
Clause figurines. Twenty-four ballroom tables were needed to
display the tremendous collection. “I have gotten to know
many among the Marian community and feel it appropriate that
the proceeds from my auction should go toward the new bells
at Dorcas Chapel,” said Jim Nintzel.
At 6 o’clock every evening from December 20 through December 28, the Dorcas Chapel Bells will herald the sounds of the
season once again with the holiday classic, Silent Night.
