Vivian Update! - Syrian Shrine
MAY 2015
The Shriek
Greetings Nobles & Ladies,
Another busy month is behind us and May will certainly be another busy one. We wrapped up
our last fish fry on Good Friday, April 3rd. We thought that attendance would be a little lighter
because of Good Friday but, we were proved wrong. We had a record crowd! The best
attendance of any fish fry to date. I would like to give a big thank you out to our “Fry
Captain”, Gary Caudill. Gary tirelessly prepared for the fish fry’s every week and did much
of the cooking, along with, his crack fry squad. Gary, with his guidance and hard work, made
it possible for this fundraiser to be a huge success and we are all grateful. Also, a big thank
you goes out to everyone who helped make this effort successful. Along with our regular monthly meetings in
May, we have Pigeon Forge coming up, along with, the ladies tea party, paper crusade, Lexington Hospital
Parade, FMDOA Cookout & Meeting at the temple, Quarter Auction and Memorial Day Parades. Refer to the
calendar for all dates. I also want to put something on everyone’s radar a little early, Mason/Shriner Day at
Great American Ballpark is on Sunday, August 23 rd, first pitch is at 1:10 PM. I would like to see some great
support for this from our nobility. This has been an awesome event in the past and this year will be a good time
too. Please see enclosed flyer. Angie and I will see you soon at our events!

6TH ANNUAL SYRIAN CAR & BIKE SHOW
SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS
Antique Caravan
The Antique Caravan is the oldest of the motorized units of Syrian
Shrine Temple, established in 1973. The Antique Caravan has a rich
and proud history of supporting the Shrine Hospitals for Children and
the events of the Temple, as well as promoting Shrinedom throughout
the community by participating in parades and community events
with their Model “T” replicas, which they have had since their
inception, 42 years ago. These distinctive Tin Lizzie “Model T” cars
are widely recognized and enjoyed by the parade spectators, and are
one of the first parade units that come to mind when someone
mentions the “Shrine”. The Caravan members/drivers are real parade
crowd pleasers with their antic filled driving style and wide variety of
horns and other noisemakers. Their size also makes them particularly
attractive to the children along the parade route. The unit currently
participates in about twenty parades each year, with usually 8 to 12
cars at each parade. While we are most known for our colorful cars
and parade participation, we are most proud of our support of the
Temple and our hospitals. None of this would be possible without the
support of our Ladies and families. We greatly appreciate all that the
Ladies do for the Nobles of the Unit and do our best to include them
at every turn. Finally, benevolence is fundamental to our charter, our
work helps to assure that the critical mission of our hospitals will
continue for the next generation of children desperately in need of
that care. For Nobles looking for a Unit to call their own, please ask
any Antique Caravan member for more information.....or call-e-mail,
Director Jim Steele Jr 513-761-4026 [email protected]
Clowns
Hello Clowns/and other Nobles, on my way to Physical Therapy the
other day with Brother SNAX, I realize it was time for me to write
this article. But I was unsure what to write about, so I said Snax, and
he said what? And I said what do I write about? He said “PARADE
SAFETY “ So here we go. Each unit should have a 1st aid kit and
water. Each unit should know who they are behind. And clowns we do
this the most and we need to stop. Stop getting into other units
space, give each unit your respect and the room they need to do their
tricks. Small car or big bike, if they hit you they hurt and can kill
you! If you are close to the OB hearing protection may be a good
thing, we have gone along time with no one getting hurt let’s keep it
that way.
Also to the new NOLBES if you would like to parade but you don’t
have a unit yet give me a call or Bring your Fez and nice shirt to any
parade and you can ride with the clowns. Remember only Shiners can
parade in the Shiners parade zone. Let’s go have a GREAT PARADE
SEASON Barrels Da Clown
Escort
As summer gets closer we look forward to the riding we will be doing.
Now is the time to check your bike for proper inflation of your tires
and checking of all the maintenance that it requires. I hope that the
weather will be good for all of our parades. Remember to push the sale
of our raffle tickets and the monthly Shrine drawing tickets. May God
ride with us! Wayne
Fez
Here comes May leaving April with the heavy showers that will give
us the beauty of the budding trees and flowers all around us. That
beauty is more significant on the road when heading to our Pigeon
Forge Parade with all the trees on your route are showing their new
buds under the .warmer sun and longer days The most memorable trips
were when we headed to Pigeon Forge on our bikes taking the country
roads instead of the Interstate Highways Fun Fest on May the 9th is
a parade challenging all participants as we will be under the microscope
by Kerbela. Yes, the Parade season for 2015 has started. The Fez has
already covered two parades, St. Patrick’s and Reds Opening day parade
that had one of the largest crowds I have witnessed on any parade we
have attended. The next activity will take place on May 3 RD “The
Flying Pig” where we assemble at Eden Park and cheer all runners and
walkers on. The Fez, Oriental Band and several Shriners with many
Hospital personnel attending the festivities. You see the louder we get
as those running and walking come by the more money our hospital
will be rewarded. So come on to Eden Park as early as you can as the
races start at 6:00 AM. The Fez will be there before 6:00 leaving the
Temple around 5:00 AM. There is plenty of room in that van. May
had two more parades Lexington Open house on May 17 TH. The
Hospital doors open for us about 10:00 AM plus food will be ready in
the tents outside and the Parade might start at 12:00 Noon. Next
Parade in May is the North College Hill that has been dropped from
our Temple Function Parade list. If you still want to participate let
me know and I will take the Fez, but you will need permission from
our ILL. Potentate. Es’ Selamu Aleikum Sam Mattar

Hamilton Shrine
Greetings Nobles and Friends, the April meeting was held at “Richards
Pizza Restaurant.” Usual business was transacted, previous meeting
minutes, treasurer’s report, etc. Cliff Fullman brought greetings from
the Shrine Center, and we installed Ill. P.P. Fred Robinson as our V.
Pres. We are still considering potential events for the HMC to sponsor
and look for any suggestions from our members. A thank you note was
received from the Millennium Assembly of Rainbow Girls, in
appreciation for the donation from the HSC. The HSC will again
participate in the Shrine Paper Crusade scheduled for May, and we will
be asking for volunteers to stand at our usual Hamilton/Fairfield
locations, to represent the Shrine Hospital for donations. Next
meeting scheduled for May 5 th, at El Mariachi Restaurant, 787 NW
Washington Blvd. Hamilton. Dinner @ 6:00 P.M. Meeting to follow.
Reservations Dick Manifold – 829-1584 or Roy Morgan – 863-2881
Legion of Honor
We have been busy, active at the Potentates Ball, and the Fish Fry’s
Hospital Host
Greetings Nobles and friends. Has spring really sprung? Time to get
the lawn mower in shape and the golf clubs shined up for the great
weather ahead. The Hospital Hosts Unit continues to offer volunteer
time for our hospital and look for Nobles who would like to participate
in a worthy cause. We meet each 2nd and 4th Tuesday at the Shriners
Hospital for Children, Burnet Ave., 9:30 A.M. in the hospital
auditorium. Check us out, just like our two newest members did, namely;
Paul Ruscher and Jim Kenyon. These new Hosts will begin their service
by accompanying the van drivers locally as well as a trip to Lexington
Hospital. In addition, they will accompany a Host delivering the
hospital mail, as well as participate in the hospital tours. This will
help familiarize them with our hospital, and will enable them to
participate in three of the major volunteer functions of this Unit.
Very sorry to report the passing of one of our past Hospital Hosts,
Norm Durham. Norm was an active member of this Unit for a number
of years. Our condolences to his wife Marilyn and family. There is
good news also, Hospital Host, Jan Apro was chosen to receive the
Congressional Gold Medal for volunteer service during WWII. Jan as
a teenager, was active in the Civil Air Patrol, and is now being
recognized for his service. The presentation is being made at the
State Capitol, in Columbus. Our congratulations to him for this proud
moment. Now for a short story. Seems a Noble bought his wife a piano
for her birthday. A few weeks later his friend inquired how she was
doing with it. “Oh,” he said, he persuaded her switch to the clarinet.
“How come?” asked his buddy. “Well,” he said, “With the clarinet she
can’t sing!” My friends live life…laugh often…love much…and keep
on smiling. Dick Manifold-Director
SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS
Mini Racers
We all enjoyed the Potentate Ball with lots of fun and dancing. We
were happy to help the fish fry season turn out to be a big success.
The mini-racers all met for our April unit meeting to have a carry in
dinner with a great test and tune for the summer parade season.
Discussion for the May Pigeon Forge Fun fest with plans to stay and
parade with fellow Nobles and adies. The mini-racers are proud to be
a active unit for the Shrine with strong brotherhood and collective
support for all Nobles. Doc
Motor Patrol
Well, they say April showers bring May flowers, but the Motor Patrol
says April and May are going to be great months to get those bikes
out, tune and polish them up and take them to the road. Everyone is
excited about the good weather and to get together and have some
fun!! Lots of good things coming up in the following months, so
make sure that you make the monthly meetings on the 2 nd Wednesday
of the month at 7pm. Since it’s starting to get warm the meetings
may be moved to the Harrison VFW Hall. Look for postings on our
Facebook page to keep informed. Ride Safe…..Jeff Gills, Motor Patrol
Secretary
Northern Kentucky Shrine Club
Greetings from the Northern Kentucky Shrine Club; we hope everyone
had a joyous Easter. Every Good Friday, Brooks Flooring sponsors a
fish fry whereby all donations are given to the hospital. This year,
the following Nobles from NKSC participated in the fish fry: Phil
Patenaude (associate member of the hospital’s Board of Governors)
and Lady Jean, Bud Wilhite (associate member of the hospital’s Board
of Governors and member of the Director’s Staff) and Lady Diane,
Carl Emerson and Al Tucker. Thank you very much for giving up
your morning to help serve. The event collected over $2600 for the
hospital. We are planning other activities in the near future. On
June 20, we are planning a fundraiser/dinner at the Shrine Center;
City of Union parade on June 26. Other parades include Bellevue and
Ft. Thomas. We have also laid the groundwork for a concealed carry
class. The Northern Kentucky Shrine Club meets the fourth Thursday
of each month at PeeWee’s in Crescent Springs. The business meeting
begins at 7:00 PM. Bring your family, have dinner and enjoy the
fellowship. Al Tucker, Secretary
Oriental Band
The Oriental Band had a busy Spring Season, working the Temple
Fish Dinners, participating in the annual
St. Patrick’s Parade in downtown Cincinnati, preparing for our Parade
Season, and getting ready for our annual GLSOBA Oriental Band
Jamboree which will be hosted this year by Hadi Temple’s Oriental
Band in Evansville. Indiana. Our band has been practicing, (yes, we
do practice), for the Jamboree which will be held the first week in
June. The O. B. and our Ladies had a nice contingent of folks who
attended the Potentate’s Ball. That was fitting, as Oriental Bandsmen
David Rees reigned supreme as our 2015 Illustrious Potentate that
night. Since the evening was a “Sock Hop” with 50’s Dress, it could
also be said that Illustrious Dave, dressed in Elvis attire also reigned
supreme as the “King of Rock ‘n Roll” for the evening. It was a
really fun evening for those of us who attended, honoring our
Illustrious Potentate, and his Lady Angie. Parade Season is right around
the corner with Memorial Weekend Parades, and then the annual
Milford Frontier Days Parade. Until Next Month, Take Care!
John Longsworth, O.B. Scribe
Roadsters
Spring is finally here, hopefully the rain slows down so we can get in
some practices before Pigeon Forge. Looking forward to that parade
and partying with our fellow Shriners in Tennessee. Four of our
members, Norman, Jan and Mark & Debbie have returned rested from
the sunshine state. Welcome home! There is a lot of activities going
on at the Shrine - watch the Shriek and get involved. The quarter
auction was a good time and we came away with 3 big prizes! The
Memorial Day parades are coming up soon - so keep those cars ready.
If you want to be involved and have a good time with your fellow
brothers during the parades, we have a few cars available. Our wives
get together with us for all of the events. Contact me or any other
Roadster for more information. Don Meinzen, Director
Shrine Golf League
Even though we were rained out on opening day, we got a few foursomes
signed up. At this writing, our second week the weather was not all
that promising either. However, the season has started and we will be
in full “swing” soon. We want to invite all Nobles to come out to
Glenview Golf Course, each Thursday morning, first tee time 8:45
A.M. Bring a foursome or only yourself and we will get you going for
a great nine holes of golf on one of the best courses in the Cincinnati
area. So get up out of that chair, dust off the clubs and join us. You
won’t regret it. Then there’s the one about the Noble who came home
from the golf course and found a note from his wife, taped to the
fridge. “It’s not working! I can’t take it anymore, gone to stay with
my mother!” He opened the fridge, the light came on, the beer was
cold…what in the world is she talking about? Remember, it’s easier to
get up at 6:00 A.M. to play golf, than it is to get up at 10:00 A.M. to
mow the lawn. Keep on swinging
West Side Shrine Club
The West side Shrine Club is on the West Side of our Shrine country.
All are welcome to our Club that meets on the second Tuesday of the
month at The Nathanael Greene Lodge 6394 Wesselman Rd. off
Harrison Ave in Green Township. We are already in spring but I need
to verify that by checking my calendar as Mother Nature has its own
agenda. May showers will bring May flowers is what I have been told.
The only flowers I notice are those pretty yellow ones in the middle
of my yard that my better half wants me to get rid of. I will only if she
will refrain from planting those yellow flowers in the pots on the
porch. Come over to the west side and join us. All are welcome even
those from the East side. Sadly I need to change the subject to let you
know that the Black Camel came through our life again last month
taking away a very close and trusted brother who was the W S S Club
President in 2005. Richard W. Becknell passed away on March 14TH
2015.Please remember Maureen and the rest of his family in your
thoughts and prayers. Richard we will miss you. Your Scribe Sam

Chairman’s Comments for May, Spring is finally here!, great time to get out and get those brothers in the Shrine. Both RUSH
parties was a good time. Thanks to all that supported. Someone stated the Chili may be a regular menu item… (Thanks to our
first lady (Angie) for the wonderful Chili) The net of all, we have some new members coming. We have so much to offer, as
there is something going on about every weekend. Something for all the family. Gary Wainscott, Art Weingartner and I, has
started our 3rd round of calling. Please take advantage of tax season being over and send in 2015 dues, if you have forgotten.
Our temple success depends on the money to run and expand the temple. However, besides the dollars, we need your bodies in
the seats at our business meeting and supporting all our wonderful events. Thanks in advance. Please call for dues questions
or just about getting more involved.. Bruce Pendleton 859-445-6829 Membership team continues to reach out to all nobles to
sign up to be a Blue Lodge Ambassador or a Virtual Mentor. Please contact Bruce Pendleton to support your Blue Lodge or
become a rep., supporting your club or unit. This is very important.
Become a Virtual Mentor
Do you remember that special person who made a difference in your life? The person who took the time to ask your name, introduce
you around or show you the ropes? If we’re lucky, we have one person in our lives that made a positive impact personally or
professionally. Being a Virtual Mentor is your opportunity to make the same difference in the life of a man on his way to becoming
a Master Mason and Shriner. All it takes is willingness, enthusiasm and time. As a Virtual Mentor, you will be paired with a
Candidate with similar interests in your area. Communicating
by phone, e-mail or in person, you’ll have the opportunity to
share your knowledge and enthusiasm about Masonry and
about being a Shriner. You’ll answer questions or concerns,
help find the right Lodge best suited to the Candidate’s
interests, and help him with his journey to becoming a Shriner.
You will also have the opportunity to make a new friend.
The average age of a
Syrian Shriner is 71,
and here is a list of
20 perks…
01. Kidnappers are not interested in
you.
02. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released
first.
03. No one expects you to run — anywhere.
04. People call at 9 and ask, “Did I wake you?”
05. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
06. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
07. Things you buy now won’t wear out.
08. You can eat supper at 4:00pm.
09. You can live without sex but not your glasses. 10.
You get into heated arguments about pension
plans.
11. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
12. You quit trying to hold your stomach in no matter
who walks into the room.
13. You sing along with elevator music.
14. Your eyes won’t get much worse.
15. Your investment in health insurance is finally
beginning to pay off.
16. Your joints are more accurate than meteorologists
or the national weather service.
17. Your secrets are safe with your friends because
they can’t remember them either.
18. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to
manageable size.
19. You can’t remember. Where you read this list.
20. And you notice these are all in Big Print for your
convenience.
OPENING DAY
Fundraising Committee
We have had a great start to this New Year. We have set a goal of $25,000 and we are now nearly half
way to our goal in the first quarter of 2015. We have had several events to date that have been hosted by
the fundraising committee but they were not necessarily geared towards raising money but instead for fun
and fellowship. If you have not come out to one of our events, dances or Bingo yet – you really need to!
We had our first quarter auction in March and to everyone’s surprise it was a blast – even for the men. We
have May and June auctions scheduled. The best part is bringing back the Syrian shrine famous fish fry’s
2 nd year on a row at this location and we served over 1000 customers! These were Shriners (old and
new), neighbors, Masons, local businesses, friends and family. We send reminders thru the Shriek and an
email blast so if you have an email address please send it to [email protected] so you can be added
to the list and you don’t miss another event. This is your Shrine and you make it what it is today …
tomorrow … and beyond. Thank you so much for being part of our family. Yours in faith Greg Pelfrey
and Lady Jacque
