The Flathead Reserve is now the Flathead
National Forest and Glacier National Park.

There’s lots of room to play on Flathead Lake. The largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi is 28 miles long and up
to 15 miles wide. That translates to 188 square miles of pure enjoyment.
Two highways traverse the lake’s shoreline. In spring, the white blooms of the cherry orchards promise luscious fruit in July and
August. Six units of the Flathead Lake State Park provide sites for family picnics, swimming, boating or camping. Two golf courses
offer spectacular views and challenging play.
On Flathead Lake there are all types of watercraft from motorized to sail to paddle. And swimming below the surface are trophysize trout, yellow perch and whitefish.
Wild Horse, the lake’s largest island, is a wildlife refuge for more than 75 species of bird along with deer, bighorn sheep, coyotes
and bear. Geese, osprey, herons and eagles frequent the aptly named Bird Islands.
This sparkling playground has something for everyone.

Winter’s snow softens the edges of the craggy peaks, smoothes out some of the valley hills and provides a soft blanket on
which to play!
Glacier National Park is even more spectacular when toured on cross-country skis or snowshoes. There are hundreds of trails
in the Flathead National Forest and throughout the valley. Frozen lakes and ponds are perfect for skating and ice fishing.
Of course there’s skiing. The Big Mountain and Blacktail Mountain Ski Area promise great powder, acres of groomed trails,

At one time, Glacier National Park and the surrounding area were all part of the Flathead Reserve. Today, much of the area
remains as wilderness or national forest, but there are also friendly communities rich in hospitality and tradition.
The Great Northern Railroad followed the Native American and fur trading routes to build their line. Amtrak’s Empire Builder
now brings visitors from east and west, stopping at historic railroad hotels and stations along the way. Originally built for railroad
workers, the beautifully restored Belton Chalet in West Glacier and the Izaak Walton Inn at Essex remind us of those early
railroading days.
This is an area where winter snows come early and stay just a little longer. Columbia Falls is the valley’s snowmobiling center
with groomed trails, fresh powder and high ridges. Cross-country skiers enjoy the trails of West Glacier or Essex.
To the east, mountains merge with prairie and high plains as you cross the continental divide and enter the ancestral home of
the Blackfeet Nation. The resort village of St. Mary is just outside the park’s boundaries at the eastern end of the Going-to-the-Sun
Road. Stay awhile or take a short drive to Two Medicine, Many Glacier or Waterton Lakes National Park.

Highway 93 from Missoula travels north through the Mission Valley, past the National Bison Range, historic St. Ignatius, Pablo and
Ronan. Over the hill, Flathead Lake appears, its crystal clear water stretching to the horizon.
Before roads were built along the lake, Port Polson was the transportation hub for travelers from the south. The steamers are gone,
but Polson is still a perfect starting point for a Flathead Lake tour.

Museums, Missions and Wildlife
The Flathead Indian Reservation stretches south from the middle of
Flathead Lake almost to Missoula. To the east, are the Mission Mountains while
national forest hugs its western border. Spend at least a day exploring all that
this land has to offer.
Start with a visit to the People’s Center in Pablo to learn more about the
history and culture of the Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille. The People’s
Center also offers Native Ed-Ventures such as a traditional encampment,
powwow or reservation tour with a Native American escort.
The Ninepipe and Pablo National Wildlife Refuges are a birder’s delight.
Together they offer more than 5000 acres of water, marsh and upland grasses.
During the fall migrations, there may be up to 80,000 waterfowl. Tundra Swans
and shorebirds use the refuge as a stopover and bald eagles can be spotted
year-round.
The Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana tells the story of the area’s early
peoples as well as the trappers, miners, loggers and settlers who settled here.
Established in 1908, the National Bison Range is one of the oldest big
game refuges in the United States. Up to 500 bison roam its more than 18,000
acres along with antelope, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, bear and some mountain
goats. Hiking is limited on the range, but two self-guided drives allow visitors to
explore the range and view the wildlife.
Jesuit missionaries established the St. Ignatius Mission in 1854. Once a
thriving community with its own church, flour mill, school, printing shop and
hospital, only the church, rectory and the original residences of the priests and
Sisters of Providence remain today.
The simple brick church was built with local materials. Now a National
Historic Site, it contains 58 murals painted by Brother Joseph Carignano, a
self-taught artist who served the mission as cook and handyman. The paintings
depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments and paintings of various saints
and Biblical scenes.
