HIS WORD TODAY
by Rev. William J. Reilly
“Friend, who appointed me as your judge and
arbitrator? Then he said to the crowd, ‘Take
care to guard against all greed, for though one
may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions… This will be for all who store up treasure
for themselves but are not rich in what matters
to God.”
A well known teacher reported that the early explorers of our land came, driven by four things –
glory, gold, greed and God. Their exploits have
been celebrated facing difficult times and adverse
conditions. If there was a lack of balance they can
be forgiven.
In our time we struggle to make ends meet, and
never have enough. We know the importance of our
good reputation, but are ready to put down another
person. We speak of our faith and religious values,
but are caught in a consumer society which taints
our way of thinking, translating wants into needs.
May we learn from the child who delights in the
wrapping on a gift, rather than what is in the box.
May we deny ourselves of one necessity, like sugar,
in the coffee or a second beer, aware that someone
else is in need. Greed is sneaky, it is easy to see it
in the capital sins.
Women of St. Mary’s are welcome to join us for our
next scripture study:
Walking with Purpose

Discovering our Dignity
Two groups will be meeting, one in the mornings
and one in the evenings, beginning September
28th & 29th, respectively. Please join the session
that works best for your schedule.
Wednesday session at 10:00 am
Thursday session at 7:00 pm
Discovering our Dignity shows us women in the
Bible struggled with many of the same things that
we find hard today. Relationships characterized by
comparison and competition, habits leading to
places of frustration and discouragement, wondering what is the point of it all... these challenges are
nothing new.
Through their stories recorded in Scripture, we
learn where we go for true contentment and fulfillment.
If you have any questions, please email Maura at
[email protected], or call 914-232-1872.
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
MONDAY, AUGUST 15th
Blood Drive
Blood Emergency - a critical time of year donations are down but needs are constant!
Please take time to donate!
Hudson Valley Blood Services will be at St. Mary’s
School on Sunday, August 14th from 8:30 am until
2:30 pm to collect blood. Please mark your
calendars and consider being a donor, and give the
gift of life. The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring this event. Please contact George McNamara at
232-3031 or go to www.NYBloodCenter.org and
click on “donate” to make an
appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.
Summer Dress Code
With summer days soon upon us, the tendency to
cool and casual attire is understandable. The Good
Lord seeks not our perspiration but our reverent
love and worship and with that principle in mind,
we have a few suggestions.
Attire at Sunday Mass should always reflect our
dignity as a Christian people exercising our Baptismal priesthood in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
A good rule of thumb is that our mode of dress
should be that appropriate to a dignified summer
social occasion.
To make one specific point: Short-shorts and flip
flops, whether worn by men or women, are not
appropriate attire at Mass.
MASSES WILL BE AT
8 AM, 9 AM AND 12 NOON.
Please join your fellow parishioners as we
gather to celebrate the feast of our patroness!
THE 2017 MASS BOOK IS NOW OPEN
Masses may be requested by mail or in person
at the rectory. The requested donation is $20
per Mass. Forms are available at the rear of
the Church and on the parish website.
Having said this, all of us at St. Marys wish you a
deserved respite during these “lazy, hazy, crazy
days of summer.”
Fr. Duff
Eucharistic Adoration
Summer Months
Friday June 10th was the last Daytime Eucharistic
Adoration for the summer months. The church
will still be open for private prayer before our Lord
in the tabernacle during the summer.
Daytime Adoration will resume September 16th
and Nocturnal Adoration will resume October 7th.
Religious Education
Saint Mary's Religious Education Program is in
need of catechists for Grade 1 on Thursday and
Grade 5 on Monday.
Classes are held once a week from 4:30 to 5:45pm.
Parents, grandparents, high school and college students are welcome.
Please consider sharing your time and your faith
with the students of our parish.
Families new to the area who wish to register for
religious education classes should contact the office at [email protected] or by phone at 2324648.
ARE YOU REGISTERED?
From time to time people come to the Rectory
because they have the honor of being asked to be
a Godparent for a Baptism or a Sponsor for a
Confirmation and they need a document from
us. This document states that they are members in
good standing of this parish. The only way we
can comply with this request is if the individual
is indeed, a registered member of the parish who
worships here on a regular basis. Please note
that although you may be registered with the CCD
Office or may have made all your sacraments at St.
Marys, this does not automatically mean that you
are registered at the Rectory! If you would like to
become a fully registered member or check to see
if you are registered, please stop by or call the
Rectory. If you are new to the parish, Fr. Duff
would like to greet you personally!

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the
Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
The world was a playground for Mickey,
a naive Irish American kid bored with
his life. His father served in World War
II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam;
now it was his turn. His 365 days in
Vietnam builds in torment until an
attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia.
Wounded, his friend captured, he
becomes a tormented survivor knowing
he is always just a heartbeat from death.
