A Golden Opportunity
The amfAR New York Gala
is one of the most coveted
tickets of the New York social
season.
This high-visibility annual event kicks off New York
Fashion Week and honors leading public figures who
have made important contributions to the fight against
AIDS.
The gala attracts leaders from the worlds of fashion,
business, entertainment, and the arts, and generates
international media coverage in leading print, television,
and Internet media outlets. The evening includes
cocktails, dinner, entertainment, a curated live auction,
and special tributes to the honorees.
2013 saw amfAR’s Chairman of the Board Kenneth Cole
honored, along with amfAR Ambassador Janet Jackson
and long-time amfAR supporter Heidi Klum. Guests
at Cipriani Wall Street were treated to performances
by Cee-Lo Green, Santigold, and Alan Cumming, with
Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael Kors, and Governor
Andrew Cuomo.
Michael Kors, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Heidi Klum
The 2012 Gala rocked Cipriani Wall Street with
electrifying performances by Theophilus London and
Janelle Monáe. Seamlessly hosted by Sarah Jessica
Parker, the evening served to honor Roberto Cavalli,
Caroline Scheufele of Chopard, and Goldman Sachs
Gives for their exceptional contributions to amfAR and
the fight against AIDS.
In 2011, the event featured a moving tribute to amfAR
Founding International Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor
delivered by Sir Elton John. President Bill Clinton was
also honored. Another highlight of the evening was a
historic reunion performance of the song “That’s What
Friends are For” by all of the original artists: Sir Elton
John, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, and Stevie
Wonder. They originally recorded the song in 1985 as a
benefit single that raised $3 million for amfAR, and this
was the first time the four had performed it together
since 1988.

In 2010, Lady Gaga electrified the crowd with her
performance in a stunning pearl-encrusted outfit at a
Terence Koh-designed piano embellished with crushed

Carcelle were honored. Vanessa Redgrave gave a
moving tribute to her late daughter Natasha Richardson,

amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS
Research, is dedicated to ending the
global AIDS epidemic through innovative
research. Since its founding in 1985,
amfAR has accelerated the pace of
HIV/AIDS research and contributed
to numerous breakthroughs that are
extending and saving lives around the
world.
amfAR identifies critical gaps in our knowledge of HIV/AIDS and supports
promising early-stage studies that often lack the preliminary data required
by more traditional funders.
Through its Research program, amfAR is advancing efforts to prevent HIV
infection in those who are vulnerable and to improve treatment for people living
with HIV/AIDS, with the ultimate goal of eradicating the virus.
amfAR’s TREAT Asia program is a network of clinics, hospitals, and research
institutions working with civil society to ensure the safe and effective delivery of
HIV/AIDS treatments throughout Asia and the Pacific. TREAT Asia has become a
model for regional collaboration on treatment preparedness, education, training,
and clinical research.
The GMT Initiative (formerly the MSM Initiative) strives to reduce worldwide
rates of HIV infection among gay men, other men who have sex with men
(MSM), and transgender individuals (collectively GMT) in developing countries
by providing small grants to grassroots groups that help expand HIV education
and prevention. The GMT Initiative also works to build understanding and
awareness of HIV epidemics among GMT, and advocates for effective policies
and increased funding.
Informed by thorough research and analysis, amfAR is a highly respected
advocate of rational and compassionate AIDS-related public policy. The
Foundation’s Public Policy program is engaged in efforts to increase
investments in HIV/AIDS research; ensure a robust response to the global
epidemic; expand access to prevention, treatment, and care; and protect the
civil rights of all people affected by HIV/AIDS.
Through its Public Information program, amfAR generates awareness of the
need for better treatment and prevention methods, and publishes educational
materials on important AIDS-related research, treatment, prevention, and policy
issues. As a respected voice on HIV/AIDS, amfAR frequently provides media
commentary on research developments and other aspects of the epidemic.
