The Zweihorn® brand has been part of the AkzoNobel
group since 2005. AkzoNobel is a leading company
in the industry, an important producer of special
products and the largest international company for
paints and colours. Their choice of products ranges
from metal and plastic coats to wood surface finishing products. Brands such as Sikkens ® and
Zweihorn® have leading positions in the market.

Icons
Solvent-based products
In addition to important raw materials that are responsible for the surface quality of a varnish/paint,
these products contain high-quality solvents. Among others, these solvents account for short drying
times and perfect flow.
Solvent-based/waterborne products
Combine solvents and water with the view to reducing the VOC content. In case of varnishes and paints,
these products are also known as hybrid systems. In the case of stains, combinations of alcohol and
water are used to optimize drying.
Waterborne products
In addition to important raw materials that are responsible for the surface quality of a varnish/paint, these
products mainly contain water. Small quantities of solvents (between 5 and 10 %) are added in order to
optimize the flow properties.
Products made of natural raw materials
Contain natural, renewable raw materials. Are free from allergy-causing terpenes, such as citrus terpenes
and balm terpentine oil. They do not contain any toxics and are free from lead and cadmium.
VOC-compliant products
Designates products, which are VOC-compliant in accordance with ChemVOCFarbV or which do not
come under the ordinance. These products may then be used for permanent installations and components of a building. Hardeners, thinners and additives are part of the respective varnishes/paints. For
that reason, these products, as well as detergents und repair products, do not get the icon.
Sustainable products
Designates products that are especially environmentally friendly. The products can be low-solvent or
waterborne varnishes/paints, natural products or resource-efficient (e.g., waste-avoiding) products.

Test standards
With products used for coating, test standards take on an
important role. Test standards traceably prove quality and
special characteristics of the certified products and thus
provide the necessary security. The sometimes high requirements (chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, flame
resistance, etc.) on the part of customers, architects, but
also tenders, can be satisfied accordingly.
All tests are carried out on cured coatings.
DIN 4102 – applicable to Germany Reaction
to fire/flame resistance
ABP – General appraisal certificate
This standard refers to building materials and
components for public and private building
purposes (e. g., walls, ceilings, interior equipment, stairs, etc.).
Validity: Paints/varnishes having a General
Appraisal Certificate, may be used for building
materials according to building rules list A,
part 2, edition 2006/1, sub-par. 2.10.2. The
GAC is the precondition for the application of
components in public buildings. These varnishes/paints are subject to third-party monitoring. Hardly inflammable varnishes/paints
according to DIN 4102-B1 must be used on
wooden particle boards tested (according to
DIN 4102-B1), also veneered or MDF boards
tested according to DIN 4102-B1, in order to
fulfil the testing criteria.
On other substrates, only DIN 4102-B2 is
considered to be fulfilled. The specified application quantity must be met exactly.
Classification of flammability according to DIN
4102 Part 1:
Building material class A = non-combustible
Building material class B = combustible
Building material class B1 = difficult to ignite
Building material class B2 = normal combustibility
Building material class B3 = easily to ignite
DIN EN 13501-1 – for Europe
Applicable standard for reaction to fire/
flame resistance
Classification of building products and construction techniques for buildings with regard
to the reaction to fire (e. g., walls, ceilings, interior equipment, stairs, etc.). Applicable in all
European countries. Especially for public buildings, such as airports, etc.
In order to fulfil the testing criteria, hardly inflammable varnishes/paints according to DIN
EN 13501-1 must be applied on the substrates specified in the test certificate. Other
substrates are not permitted. The specified
application quantity must be met exactly.
DIN 5510 - Preventive fire protection in
railway vehicles, Part 2: Fire behaviour and
fire side effects of materials and parts
This standard contains the requirements deemed necessary for the fire behaviour and fire
side effects (smoke and burning droplets) for
the materials and parts used in the construction of railway vehicles.
Solas 74/88, Imo Resolution MSC.36(63)(1994 HSC-Code)7 and USCG approval
This standard refers to the interior finishing of
ships. Flame resistance in shipbuilding according to the „International Convention for the
Safety of Life at Sea“. With the USCG approval, the „Agreement between the European
Community and the United States of America
on the mutual recognition of conformity for
marine equipment“ is recognized.

EN 71-3 - European standard – Migration
of heavy metals / chemical elements (testing of children‘s toys, for example).
EN 71 part 3 determines the migration of
harmful substances in coatings (heavy metals
such as lead, chromium, cadmium, barium,
etc.). A digestion process is simulated by means of extraction, which gives information
about the solutes. The quantity of provable,
extracted elements is determined. When doing
so, the limit values of hazardous substances
must not be exceeded.
DIN 68861 – Resistance of furniture surfaces
This comprehensive standard, consisting of
several parts, is applied to test, for example,
influence of heat (dry and wet), chemical resistance, scratch resistance, abrasion resistance, cigarette burns.
According to Part 1: Chemical resistance
Stress groups – Classification:
1A = highest/most resistant group to
1F = least resistant group
Example: Chemically curing varnish/paint and
hardener coats will be classed as stress group
1B. Varnishes/paints, which only dry physically/evaporating, will be classed as stress
group 1C only. The tests are carried out with
26 different test substances, such as beverages, solvents, acids, common household detergents, etc.
According to Part 2: Abrasion resistance
Test of the abrasion resistance of varnished/
painted surfaces with the so-called Taber Abraser; measurement of revolutions up to 50 %
rubbing through with defined sanding paper.

Art. 31, par. 1 - Foodstuffs and Feedstuffs
Law (LFGB)
If varnishes/paints shall be used for coating
wooden surfaces on shop equipment in foodcontact applications, an independent testing
institute should confirm harmlessness in accordance with Art. 31, par. 1, of the Foodstuffs
and Consumer Goods Law before. The test
covers three areas:
migration test
qualitative and quantitative examination of
the migrates
sensory examination (taste test following
DIN 10955)
The results of the examination are recorded
in a test certificate and, as the case may be,
the harmlessness will be certified. This test is
mandatory, e. g., for the internal coating of
food tins.
DIN 68930 – Requirements to the surfaces
of kitchen furniture regarding the resistance
under changing climatic conditions.
Determination of the resistance under changing climatic conditions is made by means of
a cycle test described in DIN 68930 in a climatic test chamber. The following cycle is
carried out three times.
Cycle:
5 hoursstorage at 23 °C
83 % relative humidity of air
The substrate is a MDF board.
Tox Control - The label for low-emission
furniture coatings
Due to the interaction of different pollutants
indoors, already low quantities will cause afflictions such as headache, lack of concentration, irritation of the respiratory tract. Because
many of these hazardous substances may
also originate from furniture, the release of
pollutants is examined by means of the test
for the TÜV Tox Control label. The catalogue of
testing criteria for furniture and all associated
parts and cured coatings contains the following main points:
Formaldehyde content < 0.05 ppm after 28
days
Phenol content < 14 µg/m3
Isocyanate content < 0.1 µg/m3
Solvent residues/volatile organic compounds (VOC) < 0.8 mg/m3

During this test, test persons with test shoes
and defined rubber sole walk on the flooring
to be tested, which has been coated with automotive engine oil before. In the course of the
test, the inclination is increased from horizontal position up to the angle of acceptability.
The mean total angle of acceptability is classified into the evaluation groups R9 to R13.
For Zweihorn® products provided with the
compliance mark (Ü), CE marking can be requested for structural components such as
parquet, stairs, etc. This compliance mark (Ü)
is only awarded to building products (parquet
varnishes, wood flooring products, coating
material and glues), which meet the health
protection requirements made by the DIBT in
the technical specifications.
