Welcome Meeting 2013
Düsseldorf,October 25th-27th
Celebrating Diversity
President Barack Obama, Berlin, 2013
“… as long as walls exist in our hearts to separate us
from those who don't look like us, or think like us, or
worship as we do, then we're going to have to work
harder, together, to bring those walls of division down.”
Dear Fulbrighter,
We would like to invite you to our annual Welcome
Meeting which will be held for the first time since 2004
in the picturesque city of Düsseldorf am Rhein.
The Fulbright Alumni Welcome Meeting is your chance to
get to know our association and meet fellow Fulbrighters
who have spent time in the US or who are currently part
of the program in Germany. It's a great event to ease
your (re-)entry into Germany by sharing collected experiences and exchanging stories with other Fulbrighters.
2013 is a very special year for the transatlantic friendship. 50 years after John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany,
Barack Obama took this anniversary as an opportunity to
visit the united Germany. Although the iron curtain has
fallen, there are still various walls in our daily lives.
We would like to invite you to share and discuss with us
where you think the greatest walls of today’s society
exist. What are your thoughts on how we can overcome
these barriers or is it sometimes even in our best interest
to keep certain walls in place?
We look forward to meeting you.
Best regards in the name of the organizing committee,
Johannes Schulz & Vinzent Strobel & Carsten Kuschnerus
and the entire board of the Fulbright Alumni e.V.
We are thankful for the support of the U.S. Embassy in Germany and the
Boston Consulting Group

Dr. Benjamin Becker: From Assimilation to Integration. Intercultural
Education in Germany and beyond
Intercultural education is one of the key concepts in today’s educational
and societal system. In contrast to earlier, deficit-oriented concepts, it
regards ethnic diversity as a ‘normal’, positive state, and thus recognizes Germany’s status as an immigration country. The workshop serves
two purposes: First, to give an overview of the historical and the current intercultural discourse; and second, to discuss pressing questions
of cultural identity. While Germany will be the focal point of discussion,
(transatlantic) connections will be drawn.
Benjamin Becker spent his Fulbright year as a Foreign Language Teaching Assistant at Emory University in Atlanta, GA (from 2007-2008).
Since his return to Germany, he has been an active member of the
transatlantic alumni community. From 2010-2012, he wrote a dissertation on intercultural education.
