World’s Best Motocross Riders Invade Legendary
Unadilla Valley Sports Center Next Weekend
Event Serves as Round 9 of Lucas Oil Motocross Championship
MORGANTOWN,
W.Va. – The world’s fastest
riders and the world’s most
prestigious
motocross
championship are in full
swing this summer and next
weekend, the series makes
its annual trip to legendary
Unadilla Valley Sports Center
in New Berlin. The Rockstar
Energy Unadilla National
will commence on Saturday,
August 13, showcasing the
best motocross athletes on
the planet.
An intense, three-rider
battle is shaping up for
the premier 450 Class
title, featuring three of the
sports biggest stars in Ryan
Villopoto, Ryan Dungey
and Chad Reed. After eight
rounds of action, just nine
points separate the three
competitors, and each will be
looking to add to their season
win total at Unadilla.
Additionally, the rising
stars of the sport in the
250 Class are also engaged
in close competition for
a national championship.
With the opportunity to be
considered the best 250-rider
on the planet, these young
guns, including Monroe,
N.Y., native Justin Barcia,
are willing to lay it all on the
line.
The Lucas Oil AMA Pro
Motocross
Championship
features the world’s fastest
professional motocross racers,
competing aboard state-ofthe-art motorcycles on the
roughest, toughest racetracks
in the world. Motocross racing
is the original extreme action
sport; it’s where champions
such as Ricky Carmichael,
Jeremy McGrath, and Travis
Pastrana made their mark on
the sport of motocross.
The 12-round series,
sanctioned by AMA Pro
Racing, begins in California
with the Hangtown Motocross
Classic in mid-May. The
championship includes stops
at the premier motocross
racing facilities in America,
with events in Colorado,
Maryland,
Massachusetts,
Michigan, Minnesota, New
York, Pennsylvania, Texas,
and Washington. Professional
competition is divided into
two classes: the 450 Class
for 251-450cc machines, and
the 250 Class for 150-250cc
machines.
Competitions are conducted
on natural-terrain courses that
feature a variety of obstacles,
which include a unique blend
of jumps, hills, berms and
various other challenges.
The race format for each
class consists of two 35minute races (“motos”), with
the scores from each moto
combined to determine the
overall winner. Motocross has
been recognized as one of the
most physically demanding
sports in the world.
Unadilla is one of the
longest-running motocross
facilities in the United States.
The legendary track has
played host to a number of
epic events and has been a
fixture ofAmerican Motocross
since 1972. Additionally,
Unadilla is a favorite among
the series’ competitors thanks
to its “old school” layout
and characteristics in which
obstacles within the natural
terrain provide all the hang
time and difficulty necessary
for a standout motocross
circuit. With sections of the
circuit boasting names like
Gravity Cavity, it is clear why
Unadilla is a favorite amongst
riders and fans alike. Nestled
in the central portion of
New York, Unadilla attracts
20,000-plus spectators and
generates nearly $3 million
in economic impact for New
Berlin and the surrounding
areas in Syracuse, Oneonta,
Utica, and beyond. Also,
a live network television
broadcast will be presented
exclusively on NBC Sports.
Media Day, previewing
the event, will take place at
Unadilla on Thursday, August
11. The Rockstar Energy
Suzuki
team,
featuring
several of the most notable
up-and-comers in the sport,
will be in attendance. Riders
will meet with the media
for interviews, and ride the
track for all press in attendance.
Activities for Media Day
begin at 1 p.m. EST.

All across the country,
Veterans Benefits Administration claims personnel
are working to process the
mountain of paperwork as
a result of the Nehmer case.
The upshot of Nehmer v.
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is that the VA
must re-adjudicate claims
it denied in the past for the
three newest presumptive
illnesses for Agent Orange
exposure. They are Ischemic
Heart Disease, Parkinson’s
Disease and certain leukemias. This covers claims
filed or denied from Sept.
25, 1985 to Aug, 31, 2010,
which is the date the service
connection was established.
Now that the VA is under a
court-ordered gun, the process must be completed by
Oct. 1, 2011.
Here are some of the differences between a standard
claim and one falling under
this new ruling, taken from
the training manual for new

• In many Middle Eastern

celebrate a wedding with
five events. The first is the
engagement party, during which the bride-to-be
changes clothes several
times. When the bride and
groom sign the marriage
contract there is another
party, again with numerous
changes of clothing by the
bride. The day before the
wedding there is a henna
party, during which the
bride and others are painted
with elaborate designs that
are thought to ward off evil
spirits. The reception takes
place after the wedding,
and guests are often given
five almond pieces, each
piece symbolizing one of
the sacred wedding wishes:
health, happiness, wealth,
longevity and fertility. Seven days after the wedding is
the final celebratory event,
known as sabaa, which is
for women only and is analogous to the wedding shower we have in the West.

Canned Veggies
Better Than None
Did you know it’s possible
to suffer from malnutrition
even if you’re eating three
times a day? That can happen easily to seniors who
find it hard to be motivated to cook and end up just
snacking throughout the
day.
A changing sense of smell
and taste, loneliness after
the death of a spouse, medications and boredom are a
few of the reasons we don’t
eat as well as we should. But
with a little ingenuity, it’s
easy to fix fast, easy meals
you’ll actually eat! Here are
some ideas:
• Use your slow cooker.
All the ingredients are
assembled in the pot in the
morning, and are ready by
dinnertime.
• The variety of cookbooks
on the market is amazing.
Investigate
cookbooks
that offer recipes with only
five ingredients, diabetic
recipes, meals that take less
than 20 minutes to prepare,
and prepared foods combined with your own easy
additions.
• Double the amounts you
prepare, and freeze the rest
for days when you really
don’t want to cook at all. Be
sure to label the container
and use it within a few
weeks.
• If income allows, consider ordering one week of a
plan where meals are delivered to your door. While
the cost would be prohibitive to do this constantly,
having a few meals in the
freezer would be handy for
those times you don’t want
to cook.
• Take a cooking class
and learn steps to fix quick
meals.
• Ask your doctor for a
referral to a nutritionist if
you need help with creating
a menu, portion sizes and
nutritional values.
If you’re truly stuck in a
not-cooking rut, in a pinch,
remember: Canned fruit
and vegetables are better than none at all. Peanut
butter on crackers with a
banana offers nutrition. It
takes only a few minutes to
scramble eggs, add cheese
and make toast.

Sex on the Moon: The
Amazing Story Behind the
Most Audacious Heist in
History
By Ben Mezrich
(Doubleday, $26.95)
Reviewed by Larry Cox
Thad Roberts was an
undergrad at the University
of Utah in 1997. Floundering with no sense of direction, he was disowned by
his parents and removed
from the Mormon Training Center after admitting
to the mission president
that he had had sex with his
girlfriend. In debt and facing a bleak future, Roberts
attended a career center at
the school — an event that
changed his life. As improbable as it might seem, Roberts decided on the spot that
he wanted to be an astronaut
and spent the next two years
taking physics, geology and
anthropology classes.
He landed a job interview
at the Johnson Space Center in Texas, and against
all odds was accepted into
one of its intern programs,
then drafted to help with a
moon rocks sample verification project inside the lunar
lab at NASA. Roberts was
amazed to hear that a single
gram of moon rock brought
back from the Apollo missions was worth $5 million.
He hooked up with NASA
intern Rebecca and began
formulating a plan to steal
about 2 percent of the moon
rock collection, or about 17
pounds. At 453 grams to a
pound, his haul would be
worth an astonishing $40
billion.
With a little help from
friends, Roberts managed
to make off with some of
the moon rocks and hid
them under a mattress so
he and Rebecca could have
“sex on the moon.” An FBI
sting helped bring the moon
rock caper to an end, netting
Roberts not millions, but
rather 100 months in a federal prison.
Ben Mezrich, The New
York Times bestselling
author of “The Accidental
Billionaires,” has written
a tale with more twists and
turns than even the best of
fiction. How Roberts put his
plan into action and eventually got caught make for one
of the most riveting books of
the summer.

Make Summer
Sand Candles
Like most people, I enjoy
taking long walks on the
beach. I love the feel of sand
under my feet and the way
it stretches for miles before
me. And then I suddenly feel
inspired, thinking of the ways
sand can be used in decor and
crafts. That’s when I know
it’s time to go home and have
some more fun.
Here’s a popular sand craft
kids enjoy at day camp year
after year. The adults melt
the wax and the kids create
the molds and add decorations for state-of-the-art
sand candles. With a child’s
touch, they’re whimsical,
spontaneous and useful.
To make candles at home,
you’ll need:
—Clean damp sand in a
bucket or sandbox
—1 pound box of paraffin
wax (available in canning
section at most markets)
—1 saucepan
—1 tin can, such as a large
soup can with lid removed.
(Pinch rim of the can with
pliers to form a spout for
easy pouring)
—Candle coloring or
stubs from colored candles
(optional)
—Candle wicking (available at craft stores)
—Pencil or sticks
—Tiny trinkets, stones or
shells (optional)
Here’s the fun:
1. Carve out a 2-3 inch
depression in the damp sand,
about 3-4 inches wide. Pat
the sides and base of the
depression to make a very
firm mold for your candle.
Press several trinkets into
the mold, if you wish.
2. Meanwhile, an adult
should fill a saucepan with a
few inches of water and set
the tin can in the center. Put
a chunk of paraffin in the can
and add candle stubs or coloring, if you wish. As the water
gets hot, the wax will melt.
Stir occasionally, keeping a
constant eye on it, since it is
flammable.
3. An adult should carefully
pour the melted wax into the
sand mold. While the wax
is still liquid, place a length
of wicking down the center
of the mold with at least one
inch of wicking exposed
at the top. Hold the wick in
place until the wax begins to
harden. Then, prop the wick
with a stick until the wax is
completely hard. Or, tie the
wick around the middle of a
pencil and let it rest across
the top of the mold with the
wick in the wax.
4. When hard, gently lift
the candle out of the sand
mold. Brush off excess sand
from the candle and embedded trinkets with an old
toothbrush, leaving some
sand on the surface for a
natural look.
Note: An adult should
always be present when
burning candles.

soybeans, and don’t spare
the spice mixes!
ROASTED
SOYBEANS
Spicy Soybeans Make
a Healthy Snack
Roasted soybeans (also
known as soynuts) are a
healthy and versatile snack,
and a much better option
than chips or crackers. A
1/4 cup serving of unsalted,
roasted soynuts has 130
calories. It contains 6 grams
of fat — 1 gram of which
is saturated — 9 grams of
carbohydrate, 2 grams of
fiber and 11 grams of protein. There is no trans fat,
cholesterol, salt or sugar.
Soybeans have been shown
in hundreds of studies to
help prevent heart disease
and several forms of cancer.
Stick to no more than a oneounce, 120-calorie snack, as
two or three ounces daily
are too fattening.
Roasting and flavoring dry
soybeans at home, using the
recipes below, allows you to
control the salt and add the
flavors of your choice.
Do-It-Yourself
Credit Repair
If you’ve been through a
rough financial patch, it’s
likely that your credit has
suffered. Late payments,
minimum-only payments,
credit-card balances that are
too high and maybe even
auto repossession could
have drastic impacts on your
credit score. If you’re in a
better position now, possibly with a new or better job,
your credit can be repaired.
It will take time, but it can
be done. Here’s how:
First, find out how bad the
damage is. Send for your
credit reports from all three
of the major credit bureaus.
Go over them carefully.
Look for mistakes, such as
accounts that aren’t yours,
wrong credit limit listed
and accounts that you have
already paid off showing a
current balance. Notify the
credit bureaus in writing
(certified mail, not online)
about any errors, and ask for
an investigation. They have
30 days to respond. If they
can’t verify the accuracy
of the item, they have to
remove it. Once the repairs
are made, get another batch
of credit reports and do a
line-by-line comparison.
Next, make a plan to hone
down your credit. Determine which of your credit
cards has the biggest debtto-availability ratio. A card
with $1,000 availability
and a $900 balance is worse
Start with the basic roasted soybean procedures listed and then get creative
with your flavorings. I’ve
provided tips about how
to roast dry soybeans and
ways you can add spices to
stock.xchg photo
coat the beans with flavor.
The next time you want a
snack, reach for the roasted
than a card with $10,000
availability and only $2,000
owed. The reason is that
nearly maxing out a card
counts more heavily against
you because a larger percentage of your available
credit is used.
Don’t cancel any cards,
for the above reason. When
you get a card down to a
zero balance, that availability helps your overall
percentages. (History helps:
Keep old accounts open, if
only for the longevity they
show.)
Pay more than the minimum on each card, on time,
every month, with more
money going to the ones
with higher percentages
of available credit used.
Look at the credit report:
You’ll see a column indicating whether you have been
making minimum or better
payments. Even $10 extra
takes you out of the “minimum only” category.
Don’t take on any new
credit until the current problems are resolved.
Full credit repair will
take time, but it’s worth
the aggravation. The biggest benefit to taking steps
to repair your credit is that
future credit will be cheaper. You won’t be in the
“likely to default” category
anymore, saddled with high
interest rates.
David Uffington regrets
that he cannot personally
answer reader questions,
but will incorporate them
into his column whenever
possible. Write to him in
care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475,
Orlando, FL 32853-6475,
or send e-mail to [email protected].

Roasted soybeans can be
used in salads for texture,
added to trail mixes or eaten
alone for a snack. To add a
little more flavor after roasting, use the following spice
mixes to add a kick to your
roasted soybeans.
4 cups whole dry soy
beans
Cooking oil spray
1. Rinse soybeans in a colander under cool water to
clean. Fill a large bowl with
cool water and then soak the
soybeans at least 8 hours.
2. Pour the soybeans into
a colander and rinse again
under cool running water.
Shake off the excess water,
and set soybeans aside to
drain completely.
3. Preheat oven to 350
F. Spray 2 large, rimmed
baking sheets with cooking
oil. Spread two cups of the
soaked beans into single
layer on each baking sheet.
Bake for 15 minutes, and
then spray the soybeans with
the cooking-oil spray. Stir
and continue to bake, stirring every 5 minutes until
golden brown and crunchy.
The total roasting time will
vary depending on the moisture of the beans, but should
take about 25 to 35 minutes.
4. Remove roasted nuts
To Crate or Not
to Crate?
Q:
What’s your view
of kennel cages?
My wife hates the idea
of using one to train our
dog Sandy, but I disagree.
What do you say? — Jerry
in Las Cruces, N.M.
I’m personally OK
with the concept of
crating (or “kennel cages”).
It’s an effective way to
housetrain a puppy (who
won’t soil a sleeping or
living area) and teaches
it to stay comfortable and
relaxed in a similar container, the travel crate, which is
essential to traveling with
your dog.
However, I do see frequent
instances where the crate
is misused, with negative
consequences for dog and
owner alike.
The crate also serves as a
home or den for your dog.
So it always has to be seen
by Sandy as a safe place
to be, perhaps the safest
place in the house for her.
If you use the crate to punish Sandy, such as shutting

PICKS OF THE WEEK
Troll Hunter (PG-13)
— This documentary-style
adventure into the remote
lands of Norway brings a
group of intrepid students
face to face with Scandinavian mythology. A series of
strange bear attacks pull a
group of young Norwegians
and their handheld cameras into the snowy fjords
to find a strange old hunter
who reveals the truth — hill
trolls, forest trolls and their
legendary kin are the real
culprits.
Well aware of the silliness
of it all, “Troll Hunters” uses
bits and pieces of real folklore to craft a story that has
both laughs and unexpected
thrills. The special effects
are impeccable, bringing the
goofy and grotesque giants
to life as they run from sunlight and chase the heroes
through the tundra.
Win Win (R) — A suburban father (Paul Giamatti)
is struggling with his law
practice, money issues and
his home while the highschool wrestling team he
coaches seems incapable
of winning anything. Just
when he thinks he’s found
a way around his troubles,
the teenage grandson of one
of his clients shows up at his
door with nowhere to go.
Writer/director Thomas
McCarthy proves his ability to put quietly funny and
wonderfully complicated
characters on the screen.
The movie is at many points
tender and absurd, sad and
comforting — and always
giving an authentic feel to
the action.
The Beaver (PG-13)
— Jodie Foster directs and
co-stars in this notably odd
dramedy. Walter Black (Mel
Gibson) is a husband, father
and toy executive who suffers from crippling depression. As his life crumbles,
Walter finds a beaver hand
puppet in a dumpster and
begins to speak through it
in a British accent. Never
quite sure how sad, serious
or funny it wants to be, “The
Beaver” can charm audiences then leave them feeling a
bit uncomfortable.
Foster’s direction give
takes a straightforward look
at the situation, and Gibson’s
performance ups the ante
with all the inner-turmoil and
Mel Gibson
outward weariness he can
muster. (He can muster a lot.)
Some may find the film the
perfect balance of light and
dark, while others might find
it to be a confused and simplified look at mental illness.

The putting game is such a fickle part of the process that we can easily ruin it if we do
not keep a consistent setup. One of the big problems the amateur golfer faces during a
putt is to make sure that your wrists do not move during the putting stroke. More times
than not, the wrists are moving during a putting stroke and since we are so used to it,
there is no way to identify this as a recurring problem. The key to making sure that your
wrists do not move during the putting stroke is to focus on keeping the end of the putter
pointed at the center of your body. If the end of the putter does not stay centered, this shows you that
your wrists have been moved during the putting process. By keeping the wrists still, the shoulders and
back move the putter head and your hands can stay passive to make a good stroke.

I-88 Speedway Results
By Steve Clapperton
AFTON – Rich Ricci, Jr.,
Rodney Hart, Gary Smith,
Kurt Decker and Dave Smith
all won on Vernoy’s Auto
and Body Service Night
at I-88 Speedway in Afton
Friday night.
Russ Zimmerman took the
lead at the start of the 25-lap
Modified feature, leading
a four-car breakaway with
Rich Ricci Jr., Arnie Slade
and Jim Gabriel Jr. As the
laps ticked away, Ricci
continued to pressure the
leader.
On lap 20, Zimmerman
went high coming off turn
four giving Ricci an opening
on the bottom and took
advantage of the opportunity
to take the lead. Ricci went
on to take his first win of the
season in a race that went
caution free. Zimmerman
finished second, with Slade,
third, Gabriel, fourth and
J.R. Hurlburt, fifth.
Aaron Shelton and Dave
Rosa brought the Sportsmen
to the green flag for their 20lap main event. Rodney Hart
capitalized on an opening
to lead the first lap, with
Shelton and Rosa running
second and third. The race
was slowed for a series of
caution periods during laps
six through eight, but when
the racing went back to
green, James Cornell had
moved into second, with
Brandon Walters running
third.
Hart went on to take his
third win of the season.
Cornell crossed the line
second with Walters, third,
Butch Klinger, fourth, and
Rosa, fifth.
Kurt
Decker
took
advantage of his pole
position start to take the lead
at the drop of the green in the
20-lap Olum’s Street Stock
feature. Last week’s feature
winner, Nick Nye, followed
Decker into second, with
Paul Harrington running
third.
The first caution of the
event came on lap four
when Harrington stopped
in turn four. When racing
resumed, Decker again
opened up a lead, gaining a
half straightaway advantage
by lap 8.
Just past the halfway point
of the race, Decker began
working through lapped
traffic. Nye and thirdrunning Nick Robinson also
encountered lapped traffic.
The caution came out again
on lap 15 when Nye came
to a stop in turn two. When
the race resumed Decker
was leading, with Robinson
second and Harrington
third.
During a lap 18 caution,
Robinson ducked into the
pits, surrendering second
place to Harrington. When
racing resumed Decker
went on to take the win with
Harrington, second, Neil
Palladino, third, Nick Nye,
fourth, and Rob White, fifth.
Gary Smith continued his
late season dominance of the
IMCA Modified division,
taking the lead of the 20-lap
event on a lap five restart
and cruising to his sixth win
of the season and fifth win
in the last six races. The
race was slowed by just two
cautions, the second coming
on lap 15 when Matt Roberts
got into the front stretch
wall. The car refired and he
was able to finish the race.
Mike Wilmot finished
second with Patti Simpson,
third, Gary Roberts, fourth,
and Brad Weaver, fifth.
Dave Smith picked up
where he left off last week,
taking the lead from Dave
Jaindl on lap 14 en route to
his seventh consecutive win
and ninth of eleven races this
year. Jaindl finished second
with Anthony Possemato,
third, Todd Stanton, fourth
and Buddy French, fifth.

Sour Cream Dips at the Glen Preview
Watkins Glen International is a 2.45 mile road
course located near Watkins Glen, New York,
at the south end of Seneca Lake. With its rise
from ragged infancy in 1948 to its position as
America's premier racing facility, the Glen is an astounding success story which continues sixty three years
later. In addition to holding major NASCAR and SCCA
events, Watkins Glen also hosts one of the nation's
premier vintage events, the Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand
Prix. In 2001, fans that attended the Cup Series race at
the Glen saw an unforgettable finish. Jeff Gordon had a
remarkable seventh road course victory, setting a
NASCAR Cup record.

Carl Edwards has announced
that he will remain with Ford
and Roush Fenway after
weighing an opportunity to
join Joe Gibbs Racing. "I just decided this
is the right place for me," said Edwards. He
said he had needed time to weigh the pros
and cons and that contrary to published
reports, no last-minute influx of money from
Ford or reluctance from a potential sponsor
impacted his decision.
