Liberating the Voice of Courage
with Parker J. Palmer
August 1-4, 2016
How can we help others develop their voices
if we can’t first liberate the voice of courage
within?
Consider this question and more at the fourth
annual Habits of the Heart for Healthy
Congregations: Liberating the Voice of
Courage, Monday-Thursday, August 1-4, 2016,
Techny Towers and Retreat Center, 2001
Waukegan Rd., Techny, IL 60082. This year’s
retreat again brings together the gifts of Parker J.
Palmer with the insights of up to 100 faith leaders
from around the globe. Find out more at
www.couragerenewal.org/
habitsforhealthycongregations.
We live in a time where many
clergy and lay leaders are
experiencing a growing sense
of powerlessness, even as the
need for them to exercise
personal voice and agency on
matters of justice, mercy, and
morality has become more urgent. Those who
liberate their own voice of courage can transform
their communities from spaces of wounding
silence to healing action. To help people believe in
their power is one of the greatest skills a leader
can learn
Learn at ‘Redeeming Work:
Living Wholly within God’s
Reign’ Conference, July 21-23
A conference for
Chicagoland: “Redeeming
Work: Living Wholly within
God’s Reign” will take place
Thursday to Saturday, July
21-23, 2016, at Techny
Towers, 2001 Waukegan Rd.,
Techny, IL 60082. The majority of our time is
spent with our work and careers and yet, so often,
Christian life gets segmented off to what happens
only in our church buildings. It is powerful to see
what happens when people connect the work of
their hands with the fruit of their faith.
Already this theme is stimulating rich comment on
the Center blog http://missionalchurch.org/
resources/center-blog/. The blog has a new feel
– shorter, downloadable segments with discussion
questions for study groups – a way to resource
Christian education and congregational life.

Learn about Bible Translation
in the Computer Age, May 3
Update: Assess Your Physical and
Emotional Health — Earn $150
Victor and Sara Gaultney,
who serve with Wycliffe
Bible Translators in
England, will present a
program called “Bible
translation in the Computer
Age: from Luther to
Google” at Our Saviour’s
Lutheran Church, 1234 N.
Arlington Heights Road,
Arlington Heights, IL
60004, on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at 10 a.m. and 7
p.m. The presentation is a joint effort of the
congregation’s adult education and global mission
emphases.
As of April 16, 2016,
53.99% (142
participants) of those
with eligible ELCAPrimary benefits have
taken the Mayo Clinic
health assessment. We will need 29 more eligible
participants to take it by April 30, 2016, to receive
a 1% discount on ELCA health contributions that
could result in an estimated savings of $33,000 for
congregations and partner ministries.
Bible translation is as critical for the Church today
as it was 500 years ago in the days of Luther.
There are still 180 million people who remain cut
off from the gospel because the Scriptures have
not been translated into any language they
understand.
Access the health assessment directly through
myPortico—no need for a separate Mayo Clinic
username and password. Be sure to use your own
myPortico account; couples cannot share one.
Assisting the international efforts of Wycliffe, the
Gaultneys will share how God is using computer
technology to “publish glad tidings” in some of
the most complex alphabets of the world. Learn
how this mission led Victor on a journey from
serving at the ELCA Churchwide office in
Chicago to teaching font and typeface design at
the University of Reading in England. The
Gaultneys began assisting Bible translation efforts
with Wycliffe 26 years ago. Their sending church
was St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in La Grange
Park. Today, they are affiliated with St. Michael’s
and other ELCA congregations in the Midwest.
For further information, contact Bill Decker,
Global Mission committee member, at
[email protected] or 847-375-9656.
Take the Mayo Clinic health assessment and, if
you have ELCA-Primary benefits, you will also
earn $150 wellness dollars.

Attend “Transgender: The
Forgotten People” at United in
Faith on May 15
“I believe God is calling us into this conversation
now. It’s an opportunity to get to understand
another part of God’s never-ending diversity and
another way to live into our baptismal calling to
love all of God’s children.” Bishop Gene
Robinson, first gay Episcopal priest in a
committed relationship to be elected bishop.
The Gay and
Straight Together
Ministry of United
in Faith Lutheran
Church, 6525 W.
Irving Park Rd.,
Chicago, IL 60634,
invites all to be a
part of this
conversation by attending “Transgender: The
Forgotten People.” This presentation will take
place on Sunday, May 15, 2016, from 12:30 to 3
p.m. A light lunch will be served while viewing
the documentary Voices of Witness, Out of the
Box. This will be followed by Br. Michael Oboza,
a transgender person himself, sharing his journey
of transition. A question and answer session with
the audience will follow. This will be a safe
environment for discussing real-life stories of the
struggles and triumphs of many of God’s children,
and not the sensationalized versions so popular in
today’s media.
Voices of Witness, Out of the Box is a
documentary giving voice to the witness of
transgender people of faith sharing their stories of
hope, healing, and wholeness. Gender identity and
gender expression are issues that can easily be
misunderstood and cannot be wrapped up in a neat
little box. The goal of Out of the Box is to answer
some of the most frequently asked questions.
Page 4
Br. Michael C. Oboza is a retired Professed
monastic of the Eastern rite from the Orthodox
Catholic Church of America and a retired Michael
Page awarded LGBT activist from The Marin
Foundation with over 20 years of activism.
All are welcome to worship at the 10:30 a.m.
worship service and stay for the presentation.
The presentation is free. A freewill offering will
be accepted. There is free parking available in
back of the church. If attending, contact Carolyn
Doughty at [email protected] by May 11, 2016.

Conversation Starters
INTRODUCTION
Called Forward Together in Christ is a process for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to
explore and find answers to some big questions. It is not about reinventing the ELCA – but
rather looking to the future and asking whether we are clear about who we are and what is
most important as we journey together as a church in today’s world.
The process tips and questions below are designed to help you guide a conversation. We offer
some different questions to use with different groups of people. You may want to put these in
your own words or add questions that are important in your context.
We want this to be a process of spiritual discernment and an engaging conversation about the
future of the ELCA. In support of this, the kit includes some biblical text and a process for
communal discernment you may wish to use.
The important thing is we hear from as many people as possible. The questions are
intentionally open-ended. This means we will hear different voices, experiences and ideas.
PROCESS TIPS:
 Try to allow two hours for a group conversation.
 When possible, give people the questions in advance.
 Set the scene by letting everyone know what the process is and what it isn’t.
 Make space for prayer and for the Spirit to be present in the conversation.
 Encourage people to speak from a personal perspective – their hopes and ideas matter.
 Let it be a conversation rather than a group interview (when people exchange ideas,
their thinking is almost always expanded).
 This is a listening exercise. There are no right and wrong answers.
 Ask someone to take notes at the discussion.
 Make sure someone will be responsible for sending the key messages back to those
coordinating this process. (send to: [email protected])
BIBLICAL TEXTS:
1. Philippians 4:4-9
2. Isaiah 55
3. Jeremiah 29:10-14
QUESTIONS FOR PEOPLE IN THE PEWS:
1. What are your hopes for the future of this church?
2. What drew you to this congregation and what helps you feel connected?
3. What important things should this church do in the future – in your community and in
the world?
4. Who would you like to see joining your congregation, and how might this happen?
5. What are the two biggest challenges facing your church right now? Do you have any
ideas to address these issues and move us forward?
6. ELCA is a church of more than 9,000 congregations, with a presence across the U.S. and
the world. What would you like to know about the wider church?
WHERE TO SEND FEEDBACK:
All notes can be sent to [email protected]

The Lutheran Church Planters Network is for you if…
•
•
•
•
you’re a pastor, seminarian, youth minister, or lay evangelist seriously considering
planting a church, and you need the practical nuts and bolts of church planting.
you’re already planting a church and could use some coaching and consulting to help you
plant more effectively.
you’re a Director of Evangelical Mission responsible for supervising church planters and
church planting, and you’d like more training for yourself or resources for those in your
synod.
you want to be part of a network of people interested in church planting in the ELCA.
Who we are...
We’re a growing network of people committed to equipping and connecting church planters
across the ELCA. We envision, and want to be part of, a new movement of the Spirit – raising up
a generation of faithful and effective church planters who are actively planting healthy
reproducing churches, who are connected to and learning from each other, and who are reaching
and discipling new generations of followers of Jesus.
What we do…
We’re coming alongside existing churchwide, synodical, and seminary efforts in a collaborative
way to add value by helping in the ongoing development of a church planter pipeline, especially
in these areas:
•
•
•
grassroots advocacy and promotion for church planting
practitioner-based, hands-on equipping, training, and apprenticing
ongoing peer support, encouragement, accountability, and coaching
How we’ll do it…
This will happen through four mutually reinforcing activities, namely:
1. Yearly Church Planters Training Intensive (boot camp)
Our goal is to bring together 20-25 participants per year for training in the practical aspects of
church planting. Over the next three years that would mean 60-75 potential church planters
equipped with the tools to take the next step in planting a church. Our 2016 summer
training intensive will be July 18-22 and be held at the Lutheran School of Theology at
Chicago.
2. Church Planter Residency Program
Over the three-year pilot program at Redeemer Lutheran Church’s Chicago campus, we hope
to give thorough training and rigorous experience to three interns, who will then be ready to
go on immediately to plant a new church. We’re currently accepting applications for a oneyear (paid) church planting residency at Redeemer Church, starting in fall of 2016.
3. Expanding the Lutheran Church Planters Network across the ELCA
We envision the Church Planters Network as a peer-driven, action-oriented “network of
networks,” focused on promoting, equipping, and supporting church planters. This is a lowcost, relationship-based, and “viral” approach that can provide personal support,
encouragement, accountability, and esprit de corps. Local networks can be think tanks for
sharing resources and best practices, while also advocating for church planting in their area
and providing opportunities for collaborative church planting. Our goal for the next three
years is 5-6 new local networks in several synods or metropolitan areas.
4. Providing Coaching and Consulting for Church Planters
Even the best planter can use a coach to get even better. Even the best learning experience can
fade if it’s not reinforced. Timely follow-up coaching and consulting can be invaluable to the
demanding task of planting a new church. We want to help fill that need where we can.
Looking forward…
The Lutheran Church Planters Network is in its infancy. Established in 2013 by Redeemer
Lutheran Church (a multisite church in Park Ridge and Chicago), we started inviting people in
the Chicago area who were involved with starting new churches or, in some case, simply
interested in church planting. We started meeting to connect with each other, learn from each
other, and encourage each other.
As a budding network, we’re more a movement than an institution at this stage. We’re ramping
up and broadening our efforts because we’ve found great value in getting together and want to
share our experience more widely.
This is a collaborative effort, spearheaded by Redeemer Church, with strong partner
support from the ELCA’s Congregational and Synodical Ministries and the Metropolitan
Chicago Synod.

with ELW, are exploring this resource for the first time, or never intend to purchase the book or online resources,
you will find a place at these events.
These events will include:
• ELW introduction – for those engaging this resource for the first time
• ELW refresher – for those who know the treasures well, but desire some renewed energy and a look at the
multitude of resources in the ELW family that have been produced since 2006
• Synodical ??? – for those who want to be prepared to offer ELW introduction and/or refreshers in their synod
• Foundations (strong center) –for those who want to connect with the core principles of worship in the ELCA
at this time, but may be exploring other resources to use in your unique context
• …plus worship, singing, networking, creative brain-sailing, and more.
