HUGH MARLoWe
Born in 1911, Hugh Marlowe suffered
a freak childhood injury that activated a
staph infection in his leg. He would be in
and out of the hospital for much of his
youth and was unable to join in ordinary
boyhood physical activities. This was
acute, as his twin brother, Worthington,
was captain of the football team and a
champion wrestler. A perceptive teacher,
however, encouraged him to act. This
proved fortunate, as his career would
span over fifty years, performing in many
significant films, plays, and shows on
radio and on television.
Marlowe performed in at least eleven
Broadway plays, including two comedies
by Clare Booth Luce: Kiss the Boy’s
Goodbye (1938), & Margin for error
(1939). on radio, he was the first voice
of ellery Queen (1939), a role he would
reprise on television in 1954. other
plays included: Flight to the West (1940),
by the Pulitzer Prize winning dramatist
elmer Rice. And The Land is Bright
(1941), by edna Ferber, a member of the on the radio as eLLeRY QUeen
Algonquin Round Table.
His first starring stage role was in the Kurt Weil musical Lady in the
Dark (1943) with Gertrude Lawrence. In 1947, he starred with his third
wife, K.T. Stevens, in Laura. They had two sons, Jeff and Chris, but
divorced in 1968.
Marlowe’s first major film involved a short flirtatious carriage ride
with Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). In 1949, he starred
as Lt. Col. Gately in the WWII picture Twelve o’clock High (nominated
for 4 Academy Awards), with Gregory Peck. Twelve o’clock High was
selected for preservation in the Library of Congress and is required

viewing at U.S. service academies. Marlowe’s second film that year was Come
to the Stable, also by Clare Booth Luce,
with Loretta Young and Celeste Holm.
The following year, Marlowe performed
with Betty Davis, Gary Merrill, Celeste
Holm, Anne Baxter, and George
Sanders, in All About eve – the quintessential film about “the theatre.” It also
contains the first brief screen appearance
of Marylyn Monroe.
In 1951, Marlowe did the comedy Mr.
Belvedere Rings the Bell, the Henry
Hathaway western Rawhide, with Tyrone
Power, and the seminal Robert Wise scifi: The Day the earth Stood Still, with his
dear friend Michael Rennie. He did one
other western with Hathaway, Garden of
evil (1954), with Gary Cooper.
In 1956, Marlowe starred in the B sci-fi
classic earth vs. the Flying Saucers, significant for the special effects of the great
stop-action animator, Ray Harryhausen.
In the 1960’s, he performed in three
films with his good friend Burt Lancaster:
elmer Gantry, The Birdman of Alcatraz, & Seven Days in May. The latter two films directed by John Frankenheimer.
As his Hollywood career wound down, Marlowe moved to nYC
where he met his fourth wife, Rosemary Tory, in the norman Mailer
play The Deer Park (1969). Having a son with Tory, Hugh Michael
Marlowe II, he finished his career as the family patriarch, Jim Mathews, on the nBC Soap opera Another World. He would complete
12 seasons on Another World before his sudden death of a heart
attack in 1982. He is survived by Rosemary Tory Marlowe and his
three sons.
