Welcome Back
By Matt Scheffel ’17, Editor
As this school year starts, it is a welcome back for most. For some, it is the start of a new adventure. And
for others, it is the beginning of the end of a journey. Freshmen will spend the year getting acclimated. Seniors will
prepare for the next stage of life and begin getting ready for their tough farewells. Yet no matter where one falls in
the spectrum, the 2016-17 school year is an opportunity. It is an opportunity to try new things, to impact new lives,
and to make a difference. In the film Dead Poet's Society, Robin William's character famously advised his students
to "carpe diem" — seize the day! St. Francis offered a similar sentiment when he said, "Start by doing what is necessary; then do what is possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible." As Curley men called to follow in the
footsteps of Francis, we must do what is necessary this school year: school work, class participation, showing up on
time for class. But when we step out of the comfort zone and do more than what is necessary, just as Francis did,
this is when we truly become men — men who show initiative, free thought, and creativity. Make the best of your
time at Curley to become the man you want to be. Suddenly, you will no longer desire to be that man — because
you will have become that man. Hold open the door for your brothers and clean up for them after lunch. Put in the
extra effort at practice. Join a club and bring your own ideas to improve it. Come join the Chronicle and make your
voice heard. Whatever your passion is, act upon it, and use it to make the world a better place. Whether you have
four years or only months left within the hallways of Archbishop Curley, it is never too late or too early to begin
making a difference. With every new day, there comes an opportunity to seize it.
CHRONICLE MEETING TUESDAY SEPT. 6 AT 2:45 PM IN THE CONFERENCE CENTER. WE NEED WRITERS, REPORTERS, ARTISTS, PHOTOGRAPHERS. NEW MEMBERS WELCOME.
This past Monday and Tuesday, I attended my freshman retreat. When I
first arrived, I only knew my three friends.I was very nervous and really
only talked to those friends. As the retreat went on, I found myself talking
to the other freshman and making new friends. Friar Matt and the juniors
and seniors had us do many bonding exercises, fun games, and small group
talks. The retreat also included many talks that included words of experience and knowledge.
I had many takeaways from this retreat such as being a gentleman, being
loyal and respectful, and learning how to honor God and St. Francis. But
my main takeaway was the idea of brotherhood. I saw much of that throughout the retreat. I saw many
introducing themselves, being friendly to one another, and helping each other with different problems.
Even though brotherhood lasts all four years and beyond, I believe that the freshman retreat really is
where brotherhood begins.

The “Encounter Experience”
By Joseph Nwobi ‘19
“Encounter” for me was nothing I expected it to be. Instead of it
being a boring week of repeated gospel information, it turned out to
be the best week of my life and it taught me a lot about helping people who can't help themselves. Throughout the week I worked at the
Rosemont Center, which is a center for children who start school at an
early age. I was assisting the teachers and playing with the children,
making sure they stay safe. It was an awesome experience, the children chased me around the playground as we played tag, we played
hide and seek, and I
even got to chase the children as I pretended to be the
"tickle monster." There were some challenges as well.
There were fights between the kids that I resolved and
lessons that I had to teach. I felt satisfied with what I
did to help those kids and the teachers. Everyday was
something new.
When we got back from our sites, we would go site
seeing around Washington D.C. and later go back to
our dorms. In the evening, there was a presentation or
video that the people from Encounter would share with us and we would reflect on it or we would
get into our groups and do an activity together. It was awesome. Each day was very enjoyable and inspiring to me. There were so many God sightings throughout the week. I met new friends and discovered new ways to improve myself on a spiritual level. I guarantee that anyone who goes on this trip will
have the best week ever. I would definitely go and participate in Encounter again next year!
