Next weekend we praise God for His gifts bestowed in abundance on His holy ones on November 1st. The Liturgy of that day proclaims “God is wonderful in His Saints!” repeatedly. We also invoke the intercession of the Saints for us in a special way on this great Feast. “All Saints” is so named deliberately. We celebrate not only the canonized and well-known Saints; but also the unknown. Perhaps, we will unknowingly celebrate the Feast of Saints whom we have known in our own life. This year as it falls on a Sunday the Feast will be celebrated according to the regular Saturday and Sunday Mass Schedule you see in this bulletin. On the following Monday, November 2nd, we keep the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, or “All Souls”. This liturgical day is different from All Saints by its very nature. It is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation; but on this day we pray FOR the departed who still await their final entry into Heaven. It is a constant teaching of the Church that even after death men and women can still be purified of the remnant of sins and human weaknesses not already repented of during their earthly life. This purification is undergone by souls in a state of joyous yearning and humble willingness to await their final glory in Heaven. We pray for them out of charity and piety; knowing that in the Communion of Saints our prayers aid them. This is the reason for the custom of special Masses for the dead at this time. We keep the custom of the “Novena” or Nine Days’ Masses here at Saint Matthew. Connected with this day is a custom some of you will remember. In 1915, during the carnage of the First World War, Pope Benedict XV, horrified by the death of so many, and the lack of proper funeral rites for them; as well as the destruction of many churches in Europe, granted every priest the permission to offer 3 Masses on All Souls’ Day. What was granted as permission soon became an expectation; and in every parish this day was distinguished by the practice of “continual Masses” as each priest in the parish said his 3 Masses in sequence. Like many other customs this has been affected by the changes in the Liturgy and the way in which the Faith is understood and practiced (or not). Mixed with this has been a loss of the sense of personal death being the moment of particular judgment of a soul by God and the real possibility of the need of a costly purification (Purgatory) before one can enter Heaven. It is NOT charity towards a deceased Catholic to assume that the very fact that he or she has died means that the person has entered into Final Glory. The Lord has given us the means to intercede for not only our beloved dead; but also for countless unknown souls for whom no one prays. The chief among these means is the Sacrifice of the Mass. The Church maintains the permission mentioned above so Masses will be offered on Monday November 2 nd as follows: The usual 9 AM Mass in the church. 2 Low Masses offered in according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (traditional Latin Mass) in the Chapel beginning at 9:30AM and at 10:15 AM. These Masses will be offered as is the custom for all the Faithful Departed and for the intention of the Pope. An evening Mass at 7:00 PM in the church. This is the annual special Mass offered for those who have died in the year since last All Souls’ Day. It will have music and the reading of the names of this past year’s Deceased. God’s blessings, Fr. Hewes 5 October 25th The 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children’s Mass is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone 864-3321 Fax 499-1530 Email: [email protected] . GRADE LEVEL MASSES FOR WINTER AND SUMMER PROGRAM STUDENTS Sunday, October 25, 2015, 5th & 6th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, November 1, 2015, 7th & 8th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, November 8, 2015, 1st & 2nd grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, November 15, 2015, 3rd & 4th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Wednesday, November 4, 2015 there will be a First Holy Communion Meeting at 7:00PM downstairs in Msgr. Goggin Hall. Parents of children making First Communion in May 2016 are asked to attend. These Masses do include all the Summer Program students as well. For those students attending grade level Masses listed above, please sit in the front of the Church, try to arrive by 9:10AM and remember your tithing envelopes as they are not only used for a donation but also for taking attendance. All family members are invited to join us at these Masses. Classes are cancelled on Wednesday, November 11th, for Veteran’s Day. SPECIAL NOTE: As Thanksgiving approaches, let us not forget those in need. We are asking student’s families for non perishable food donations to be distributed through St. Vincent De Paul and St. Matthew’s Parish Outreach Program. The children can bring these items when they come to class between now and Monday, November 23rd. This kind of sharing and caring is a wonderful example to the students about helping people who may not be as fortunate as they are. Thank you in advance for your generosity. October 25th The 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time 8 Please join the millions worldwide who pray each day for the monthly prayer intentions of Pope Benedict XVI. Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope. The Holy Father gives us two prayer intentions each month, one a general intention and the other an intention for world missions. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. October Universal: That human trafficking, the modern form of slavery, may be eradicated. Evangelization: That with a missionary spirit the Christian communities of Asia may announce the Gospel to those who are still awaiting it. RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program Month One – Developing Baby Your spiritually adopted baby has been quite active over the past month. Already your baby is 10,000 times bigger than at conception. Your baby has developed the foundations of his/her brain, spinal cord, and nervous system by the 20th day. His/her heart began to beat on the 21st day. His/her heart is pumping blood through its own circulatory system and the blood type can be different from his/her mother’s. Your baby is most vulnerable during the next month of being aborted. Pray that the Lord of Life might move the heart of his/her mother to give him/her the most precious gift of all - - the gift of life. For more information, please see the “Frequently Asked Questions” on the Respect Life bulletin board in the breezeway or call Lisa at 499-6684 The St. Matthew Outreach and St. Vincent de Paul Society Thanksgiving Food Drive...Help those in need. Call John Gatto of the St. Vincent de Paul Society 631-499-8520 ext. 117 October 25th The 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time The St. Matthew Rosary Altar Society and the Knights of Columbus would like to invite you to participate in a Pilgrimage to St. Anne’s Shrine in St. Jean the Baptiste Church in NYC with Evangelist/ Healer Bob Walsh In his book, “Miracles at Saint Anne’s Shrine in New York City,” Bob Walsh tells the remarkable story of miracles occurring at Saint Anne’s shrine located in St. Jean the Baptiste Church on Lexington Avenue and 76th Street in New York City. Saint Anne is the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the grandmother of Jesus Christ. Her story begins in the Holy Land during the time of Christ and continues to present time. Bob Walsh tells us of Saint Anne’s life as recorded in ancient history, Catholic Church traditions and from visions by the saints. Several of the miraculous events covered in this book were personally witnessed by Bob Walsh. Few saints enjoy such wide-spread veneration as Saint Anne, so much so, that it is not possible to enumerate all the chapels and churches dedicated to her. Nor is it possible to adequately cover the countless miracles that have been attributed to her intercession over the centuries. And miracles through Saint Anne’s intercession continue to occur at her Shrine in St. Jean the Baptiste Church in New York City! Date: Tuesday, November 17th Time: We will depart from St. Matthew’s Church at 10:30 (this is for those who would like to car pool. You may take the train on your own or a bus will be provided if 50-55 pilgrims are guaranteed) -We will attend mass at St. Jean the Baptiste Church at 12:15 -We will venerate the relic of St. Anne and attend adoration We will depart around 3:00. Some of them bring wrapped sandwiches they have made at home; some bring individual bags of chips, homemade goods, or 12 packs of canned soda. Some drop off packaged cookies, or napkins, or even toiletries like mini shampoos, mouthwash etc. Tons of clothes are donated. For over fifteen years, this merry band of volunteers has wrapped up all the generosity of this parish each and every third Saturday and has taken it to the men at the Bellevue Men’s Shelter on First Avenue and Twenty-ninth Street, next to Bellevue Hospital. How would you like to join us? Sometimes writing a check to your favorite charity doesn’t cut it. Sometimes you want to get involved and express your desire to help the poor. You don’t even have to go the city with us. A commitment equal to your wishes could be fulfilled in this groups effort and here’s how you can help. Make a few wrapped sandwiches of beef baloney and cheese or peanut butter and jelly. Bring the food etc., to the kitchen before Mass if possible, but we must have all at about nine o’clock, our usual departure is about ten a.m. We usually get back before two p.m. Remember, you can buy chips, puddings, soda, cereal bars during your monthly run to COSTCO and flag it for the homeless. Your help or donation lights up the lives of these marginalized folks. Be inspired by the kindness and generosity of our parish and join us in this way to lighten the sting of poverty and homelessness. There is a place for you in this ministry. For information call – Frank Harnos 499-0074 In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus asks Bartimaeus: “What do you want me to do for you?” And he answers, “Master, I want to see.” Let us ask Jesus for the grace to “see” our brothers and sisters who are poor and lonely. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God’s love and mercy to families, providing food, money for utility bills, rent and other bills. God Bless You!
