MISSION STATEMENT
The Office of Religious Education serves the ongoing redemptive mission
of Jesus Christ through fostering and developing lifelong evangelization
and catechetical processes.
We form leaders for a catechetical ministry that integrates a social justice
perspective and that responds to the needs of the diverse peoples of the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Dear Friends in Christ:
Queridos Amigos en Cristo:
It is my pleasure to welcome all the catechists, parish
ministers, volunteers, and presenters to our annual
Regional Religious Education Congress. I always look
forward to this annual event to meet my co-workers in the
work of evangelization and catechesis as you seriously
pursue learning and formation so we become not only
faithful but more efficient in our special apostolate.
Es un placer dar la bienvenida a todos los catequistas,
ministros de la parroquia, voluntarios, y conferencistas
a nuestro Congreso Regional Anual de Educación
Religiosa. Cada año anticipo la venida de nuestro
evento anual para encontrarme con mis colaboradores
en el trabajo de la evangelización y catequesis seriamente buscando aprender y formarse no solo para
permanecer fieles sino para ser mas eficientes en
nuestro apostolado especial.
Our annual Religious Education Congress for years has
been a blessing to our local church providing learning
opportunities for our parish adult and youth leaders,
school staff and for many others involved in various ministries in our church communities. It is doubly meaningful
during this Year of Faith. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
encouraged us to rediscover our faith so that our personal encounter with Christ our Lord may bring joy and
renewal in our faith experiences that will make a difference not only in our life but in the world. Our faith is
intended to be a witness and source of inspiration for
others to discover, to know, to love and to serve God.
The theme for this year, “Proclaim God who Dwells
Among You!” is a very relevant and appropriate
response to the call of Benedict XVI on this Year of Faith
as this gathering helps to equip us to be effective in
announcing the Good News of God’s abiding presence in
our midst.
I commend and thank Karina Plascencia and all the helpers for organizing our regional congress. My prayers are
join with yours invoking God that our gathering merit His
blessings.

Nuestro Congreso anual de Educación Religiosa por
años ha sido una bendición para nuestra Iglesia local
proveyendo oportunidades de aprendizaje para los
adultos, lideres jóvenes, facultad de escuela y otros
envueltos en varios ministerios en nuestras parroquias.
Aun mas significativo durante este Año de la Fe. El
Papa Emérita Benedicto XVI nos ha alentado a volver
a descubrir nuestra fe para que nuestro encuentro personal con Cristo, nuestro Señor, nos traiga alegría y
renovación a nuestras experiencias de fe para que haiga una diferencia no solo en nuestra vida sino en el
mundo. La intención de nuestra fe es de dar testimonio
y ser fuente de inspiración para que otros encuentren,
conozcan, amen, y sirvan a Dios.
El tema este año, “¡Proclama a Dios Que Habita en
Ti!” es muy pertinente y una respuesta apropiada a la
llamada de Benedicto XVI en este Año de la Fe ya que
esta convocatoria nos ayuda a equiparnos para ser
mas efectivos en anunciar la Buena Nueva de que la
presencia de Dios permanezca en nuestro alrededor.
Yo encomiendo y agradezco a Karina Plascencia y a
todos los que ayudan a organizar nuestro congreso
regional. Mis oraciones las uno a las suyas invocando
a Dios para que nuestra reunión merezca Su bendición.

Dearest Friends,
It brings me great joy to have the opportunity to welcome all of you to the San Pedro Religious Education
Congress. Our theme this year “Proclaim God Who Dwells Among You!” has its roots in the vision set
before us by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI for the Year of Faith and the New Evangelization. How do we
evangelize? We do so by sharing with others what God is doing in and through our life. It is in our recognition to live a life that proclaims who God is for us. Come, let us proclaim it together!
As you look through the workshops being offered please keep in mind others that might benefit from this
enriching day and share this information with them. I challenge you to choose three workshops that will
help you become more effective in your ministry, will nourish your hunger for learning more about your
faith and will help you grow personally.
We continue to honor catechists who have been nominated and selected to receive the Excellence in
Catechetical Service Awards, because of their exemplary service to their faith communities. See page
28 for further details. We are proud of their commitment to share the Good News.

Es con mucha alegría que les doy una calurosa bienvenida a todos ustedes al Congreso de Educación
Religiosa de San Pedro. Nuestro tema este año “¡Proclama a Dios Que Habita en Ti!” esta enraizado
en la visión que el Papa Emérita Benedicto XVI lanzo durante este Año de la fe y La Nueva Evangelización. ¿Cómo es que evangelizamos? Compartiendo con los demás lo que Dios esta haciendo en nuestra
vida y a través de ella, pues es nuestra vida que proclama quien es Dios. ¡Vengan, y proclamemos juntos!
Al revisar los talleres que se ofrecen, mantengan en mente a las personas que se pueden beneficiar durante este día de enriquecimiento, para que ustedes les compartan esta información. Los reto a escoger
tres talleres que les ayuden a ser mas efectivos en su ministerio, les nutran el hambre que tienen por
aprender mas de su fe y les ayuden a crecer personalmente.

Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos—
Adultos—RICA
En el campo pastoral últimamente, hemos visto personas presentándose para los sacramentos de matrimonio y confirmación. En conversación con ellos nos damos cuenta que
por varios motivos la persona no ha recibido el sacramento de Eucaristía o quizás no han
sido bautizado o ha sido bautizado pero en una secta o en un rito fuera de la Iglesia
Católica Romana. ¿Cuál es el plan catequético para que puedan integrase plenamente a
la fe y recibir el sacramento o sacramentos que desean?
La Iglesia tiene un plan catequético para responder ha estas situaciones pastorales: El
Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (RICA) y adaptado para niños de edad catequética. Desgraciadamente muchos no conocen el rito ni el plan catequético que esta a nuestra disponibilidad para responder a estas personas.
Este año estamos presentando tres talleres para ayudarles entender el proceso y el plan catequético de
RICA. Los tres talleres ayudaran en entender el proceso, como desarrollar en la parroquia y tener una conversación con otros lideres catequéticos los varios temas que rodean la situación catequética que afrentamos a nivel parroquial.
Si esta involucrado en RICA, venga a los tres talleres para enriquecer y profundizar su conocimiento sobre
el proceso. Si no conoce el RICA, venga conocer su historia, el plan catequético, y escuche la conversación
que surge en la implementación del RICA a nivel parroquial.
A62 RICA y el Derecho Canónico
Este taller dará un vistazo a las temas matrimoniales y el proceso del derecho canónico y su relación con el proceso de RICA. En particular trataremos preguntas acerca de la anulación de matrimonio, casamientos entre católicos y no católicos y la validez de bautismos y otros temas que los participantes presenten.
B63 RICA y los Niños de Edad Catequética
Veremos;¿Cuál es el programa de formación para niños en el proceso de RICA? ¿Cuál es su preparación y los
indicadores que los niños estas listos para vida en la comunidad cristiana. Favor de traer el Ritual (Rito de Iniciación para Adultos) para el taller.
C63 RICA: el rol de los padres de familia y padrinos con niños de edad catequética involucrados en el
proceso de RICA.
Como despertar la fe en los padres cuyos niños están involucrados en el proceso de RICA para que sean los
primeros maestros en el camino de la fe. Favor de traer el Ritual (Rito de Iniciación para Adultos) para este
taller.
Fr. Richard Vega es miembro de la Sociedad Mexicana de Liturgistas y presentador para las oficinas del Culto Divino en Los Ángeles y
Chicago. Actualmente es párroco de St. Frances of Rome en Azusa. Fue párroco de La Purísima Concepción en Lompoc, CA, y vicario parroquial en la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles.

Youth Track
I Timothy 4.12
Young people, too, are called to PROCLAIM GOD! In the San Pedro Region, we are blessed to have many
high school youth who have said a resounding “YES!” to God’s invitation to serve their parish and school communities in leadership roles. Like their adult counterparts, these young leaders are called to continue growing
in their faith and developing their leadership skills. The Youth Track provides an opportunity for them to do so
during the Regional Congress.
The workshops in the Youth Track are directed specifically toward high school youth who serve as peer leaders
in their parishes or schools. This year, participants will have a choice between two options for each of the
workshop periods. We ask that adults register for the youth track workshops only if they are bringing youth participants. Please note that parishes and schools are responsible for providing the appropriate chaperones and
supervision for the youth they bring to the Regional Congress.
Session A
10:00 am—11:30 am
YT-A1 Disciples of the 21st Century
This workshop will give teen leaders tools and skills needed to develop the proper attitude for the service of peer
leadership. It will be an EPIC (Experiential, Participatory, Image-Rich and Connecting) experience with Jesus as our
ultimate role model of leadership!
Ms. Mary Hernandez is the Coordinator of Youth Ministry for 13 years. I have served on Archdiocese teams such as YDCT, Confirmation Directional Team, and completed the National Certificate Classes. Empowering youth to lead in our church is my passion.
YT-A2 Servant Leadership
What does it mean to be a Servant Leader? Paticipate in this interactive workshop and learn what it means to become a Servant Leader!
Mrs. Bianca Langlois has ministered to youth for the past 15 years, developing strong Catholic Leaders. She is a Master Catechist and is currently working on her Lay
Ecclesial Ministry Certificate.

YT-B1 Can I Get a Witness?
We all have our own story to share, but sometimes it's hard to find the right words. We tend to forget that simple
story-telling is how we communicate everyday with family, friends, and even strangers. So how can we use our stories
to spread the Gospel? Learn how to find your faith story and discover what it means to be a witness for Christ.
Ms. Sarah Swisher has been a leader on the Signed and Anointed to Witness (S.A.W.) retreat for the past seven years. She focuses on youth leadership development in the
Santa Barbara Pastoral Region, and has helped out at numerous parishes throughout the Archdiocese in the areas of Confirmation & Youth Ministry. She received her B.A.
in Theological Studies in 2009 and her M.A. in Pastoral Theology in 2013, both from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Youth Track
Session B

YT-B2 Owning and Growing your Christian Spirituality as a Teen and as a Peer Leader
This workshop will introduce youth peer leaders to the reason (and ultimate goal) behind having a spiritual life
and hence the necessity of fostering their Christian spirituality as teens. We will focus on how one can grow in
relationship with God in a meaningful way through engaging Scripture with the imagination, reflection and use of
music. Youth peer leaders will also be introduced to recognizing and discerning the voice of God in their lives to
see how God is inviting and empowering them to be a part of His plan of salvation by living out of God’s Kingdom
from where they are in this moment of their lives.
Sister Su Fern Khoo, VDMF is a Verbum Dei sister who has been involved in Young Adult and Youth Ministry for over 10 years. Currently she is serving in St.
Anthony Church, Long Beach, CA as one of the Religious Education Coordinators, Confirmation teacher and Youth Minister to the Youth Peer Ministry group for the
Confirmation program. The Verbum Dei’s charism of contemplative prayer and ministry of the Word of God is the foundation for her passion in ministry in helping
our youth and young adult peer leaders to grow more deeply and authentically in their spiritual journey, as well as, in their leadership skills for effectively sharing
their faith with others. Sr. Su Fern received her Masters of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley.
Mrs. Ana L. Gomez, originally from Guatemala is a mother of four college students. She has been involved in catechetical instruction since she was 16 years old.
Mrs. Gomez has always been driven by her passion for sharing the richness and value of Catholic faith to all. She is especially invested in youth ministry and believes
in the potential that the youth have in understanding their faith and living it out in a way that makes a difference in their own lives and those of others. Currently
Mrs. Gomez is a Confirmation and RCIA Catechist at St. Anthony Church in Long Beach, CA. She is also a Master Catechist for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and
has been teaching Basic Adult Faith Formation since 2008.

YT-C1 Entertaining Angels: How Do We Proclaim the Gospel Through Acts of Hospitality?
Come learn, how you as peer ministers can proclaim Hebrews 13:2 in your ministry. Take the time to evaluate what
you already do, look at areas to improve, and you will leave with valuable tools to "entertain" the next "angel" you
meet.
Ms. Katie Hernandez is the Director of Religious Education and Confirmation Coordinator at our Lady of Malibu. Katie holds a B.A. in Communications and is
currently working on her M.A. in Counseling Psychology. She has been working with youth for over 10 years and serves as a member of the Archdiocesan Youth Ministry Directional Team, as well as a small group leader for the Christian Leadership Institute.
YT-C2 Tweet the Gospel at all Times: Social Justice in The Age of Social Media
St. Francis is known for his saying, "Preach the Gospel at all times... use words when necessary." The age of social
media has opened up doors of opportunities to live out the meaning of these words. In no other time in history
have there been so many possibilities for sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. In a mere matter of seconds we
make God visible in the digital world: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram become new instruments for the
word of God. Through music, film, and small group interaction, this workshop will present a brief overview of
Catholic Social Teaching and offer ideas for how we can share it with our friends. Come and see how today's advocates of Justice and Peace are bringing about social change in the age of social media.
Mr. Sergio Lopez graduated with a MA in Religious Studies from Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles. As a husband, musician, speaker, and Catholic lay
minister, he has dedicated his life to pursuing the advancement of justice and peace by using his gifts to serve those on the margins of society. He loves exercising and

A10 Back to Basics - Morality 101
What are the steps that one should use to make a good, moral decision? In reality, many good people really couldn't tell you, other than "it just feels right." There are discernible components and steps that one can take when
making key decisions and evaluating what one should do in confusing situations, especially when those decisions
involve good or possible evil - moral or immoral. Drawing on our rich faith tradition, Scripture and the teachings
of Catholic theologians, this workshop explains what these steps and components are and gives practical tools to
help you with those decisions. These steps can be simplified for those who teach elementary level and are easy
enough to understand for those who teach high school level and above.
Mrs. Jennifer Campbell has been involved in religious education for over 25 years. In addition to volunteering in her parish catechetical programs, she taught
full time in Archdiocesan high schools for 14 years and was the Theology Chair at Bishop Amat High School for 10 years. She served on the Archdiocesan Religion
Standards Board for High Schools, was a Catholic school elementary principal and is currently serving at her home parish as Director of Adult Faith Formation and
Parish Engagement. Jenny has an M.A. in Applied Spiritual Theology and is a certified StrengthsFinder coach. She lives in the southland with her husband, has 4
adult children and 5 grandchildren.
A11 You're Not a Christian, You're a Catholic!
How often do other faith traditions assume because we are Catholic we are somehow not Christian. The question
is How do we answer that Statement? Interesting, Informative, Provocative.
Deacon Jim Carper is a recognized authority in Catholic stewardship and an experienced leader in building support for faith-based organizations. His weekly
blog, "90-SecondStewardship"...a focus on the integration of faith and hope in our busy and often confusing daily lives reaches throughout the world. In 2006, he
was one of 12 from the United States to serve on a panel to share fundraising expertise in China. Deacon Jim is currently the Director of Marketing and Development at Holy Name of Jesus School in South/Central Los Angeles.
A12 Practical Methods and Techniques for working with Children with Special Needs
How am I going to get this student to sit in their seat, attend, and hopefully learn in the session I have today?
This is a common enough question for teachers of any subject. But, how is this thinking and planning different
when considering a learner with different abilities and challenges. Charts, stickers, praise and their uses will be
presented and discussed.
Mrs. Giorgia Diomedes is currently working with students in 2nd - 4th grades severely impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder. She worked for nearly four years
as the Inclusion Facilitator for ABC Unified School District supporting teachers and paraprofessionals develop appropriate and helpful strategies for working with
students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other behavioral or physical difficulties She is a Behavior Intervention Case Manager and has her Master’s degree in
Special Education. Giorgia has three children and has been married to a youth minister for 10 years. Through her experiences working with children and adults
with special needs and coming to understand the challenges of the day to day workings of a youth ministry program, she approaches the spiritual and educational
challenges of the church and its programs holistically and practically. She has developed a three-session Special Needs course for the improvement of delivery of
services and education to catechumens with different abilities and needs.
A13 Teenage Conversion: Walking A Heart Path Into Justice
Participants will experience the activities that the teenagers would go through while taking this spiritual journey.
Participants will explore with the other participants how this conversion process can be used in their parish
programs for teenagers.
Dr. Tony Fadale is a retired high school teacher and parishioner of American Martyrs Catholic Community of Manhattan Beach. Dr. Fadale holds a Master's
Degree in Reading with a Reading Specialist Credential. His doctorate is in Education. He taught high school for 37 years. Dr. Fadale is past chairman of the
Commission of Life, Justice and Peace with the Office of Life, Justice and Peace in the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and is on the JustFaith Ministries national
board of directors and the San Pedro Region Social Justice Committee.

A14 Preparing The Way of the Lord With Creative Catechesis
Called to the awesome task of moving hearts and minds toward God, we must prepare ourselves to be effective
communicators of the Good News. We have to keep up with the exciting world of our learners, changing and
growing so that our sessions are not dull or boring.
A welcoming environment, an involved class, and your vibrant
faith make live and exciting lesson plans and enthusiastic catechists. Come and share ways to put it all together
for creative successful faith sharing.
Ms. Eileen Fewless is a consultant for RCLBenziger and a Director of Religious Education at St. Bernardine in Woodland Hills.
A15 Aging with Grace
There is a hidden group in every parish that needs special catechesis--the Seniors! They deserve more than just
bingo, cards or field trips. This session will speak to some of their special needs and provide practical tips for
catechists, indeed all parishioners.
Sr. Gretchen Hailer, a Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, is a longtime adult catechist who gives workshops and retreats on topics of spirituality and ministry. As a consultant, she provides catechesis with and for senior parishioners. She has authored or co-authored five books. Sr. Hailer has served in a number of capacities in the Los Angeles Archdiocese and has been a National Catechetical Consultant for several publishers.
A16 Teaching sexual morality to high school students.
Teaching this important topic is viewed by some as a harrowing experience. I will try to share some ideas on how
to make it more enjoyable and relevant.
Mr. Jack Hastert Graduated from Loyola University, with a degree in Business Administration. Spent two years as member of Jesuit Volunteer Corps at St. Joseph
parish/school in Seattle, 1976-78. Began Upper Room youth ministry program at St. Dominic Savio parish, 1978-83. Worked at St. John Bosco High School as

Mrs. Terri Palmer is the Director of Faith Formation at St. Augustine Church in Culver City. Terri has over 25 years of experience in Religious Education, including positions as a Catechist, Retreat Facilitator, Lecturer and DRE. She and her husband, Deacon Scott, completed the Archdiocese Diaconate Formation program in 1999. She has continued her formation by earning multiple certification and went onto become a Master Catechist in 2010. Terri graduated from the LMU
RCIA Certification Program May 29, 2012. Terri also serves on the L.A. Archdiocese Initiation Committee and is a VIRTUS Facilitator.

Ms. Vikki Shepp, a consultant for ministry, considers herself the "Ministry Muse." She previously served as the L.A. Congress Coordinator and, before that, as the
Consultant for Youth Ministry and Confirmation for the Office of Religious Education in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. Vikki's books include "By Your Side,"
"Letting go of the Chaos" and "Coyote Meets Jesus", and, along with Leisa Anslinger, she authored "Forming Generous Hearts". She has spoken to youth and the
adults who work with them throughout the US and in Canada. Currently, Vikki serves the Girl Scout Council of Orange County as the Director of Volunteer Management. Additionally, she is the chair of the NCCGSCF management committee of the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry and has helped in the editorial development of the Living and Loving our Catholic Faith series as well as the Youth Ministry Resource Manual for NFCYM.

The stories we are told as children live within us, inform our moral and faith compass and as we grow older, they
come to hold deeper meaning in our lives. Identifying with the life and struggles of a character in a literary story, a biblical figure or a saint instills a sense of belonging and community in the faith life of a child and brings
their own personal faith to life. This workshop will show you how to bring your classroom alive with the power of
scripture, the lives of the saints, and the art of storytelling. We will discuss ways to incorporate the characters
and stories found in scripture, the faith themes found in children’s books and techniques in storytelling.
Ms. Michelle Youssef is currently the Director of Faith Formation for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. She was the Consultant for Elementary Catechesis at the Office of Religious Education in the Los Angeles Archdiocese for four years. She has a Bachelors degree in Theology from the University of Notre Dame
and a Masters in Theology from Loyola Marymount University. She has six years of experience in high school ministry as a theology teacher and as the Director of
Campus Ministry and Community Service at Marymount High School in Los Angeles.

Vivimos en un mundo donde la Prudencia cada día esta mas ausente, por ejemplo, en la Iglesia dentro de los ministerios eclesiales continuamente se juzgan muy a la ligera algunas actitudes y comportamientos que no tienen nada
que ver con la realidad que aparenta ser, destrozando en algunos casos por la imprudencia la vida de hombres y
mujeres que sirven al Señor y a la Iglesia con sinceridad. En este taller: La Virtud de la Prudencia, aprenderemos
a la luz de las Sagradas Escrituras y la Patrística acerca de dicha virtud y cómo lidiar con la imprudencia para que
el vigor en el ministerio no se apague. Este taller es recomendado para catequistas, líderes de grupos de Oración
Carismática y personas que dan guía a otros.
Mr. Heriberto Cayetano tiene cerca de 20 años trabajando en la Pastoral Hispana en la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. Actualmente es Director del Ministerio

A54 Caminaré En Presencia del Señor
El concepto de iglesia significa etimológicamente el pueblo reunido en asamblea. En sentido teológico designa a la
congregación de los fieles y de forma analógica a los templos cristianos. La iglesia es, antes que nada, comunidad
de personas (no una institución, ni una entidad jurídica, ni mucho menos una jerarquía) es un término que está relacionado con el de pueblo de Dios y que se utiliza frecuentemente en el NT como una comunión de comuniones. En
este taller iremos por los caminos del Señor en busca de las cuatro realizaciones principales del misterio de la

Iglesia: La Iglesia como comunidad de comunión; la Iglesia como Pueblo de Dios; la Iglesia como cuerpo místico de
cristo; la Iglesia entre las personas pobres.
Ms. Lourdes González-Rubio es la Coordinadora de Ministerios Catequísticos Básicos y Avanzados en Español para la Oficina de Educación Religiosa de nuestra Arquidiócesis desde 1991. Colaboró con la Oficina para el Culto Divino, también de nuestra Arquidiócesis, dando entrenamiento a los ministros litúrgicos desde
1986, tiene treinta años de experiencia en la pastoral hispana. Ha sido invitada a dar conferencias en las Diócesis de San Diego, Fresno, Sacramento, San Bernardino y Oakland. Es autora de dos libros de poesía y uno de reflexiones para la compañía Ligoure, titulado “Entre Diosito y yo”.
A55 Reforma Inmigratoria Comprensiva: ¿Hemos llegado?
Aunque estamos avanzando hacia una reforma en nuestro sistema de inmigración, las causas a la raíz de la problemática no se han tocado. En la carta pastoral Ya No Somos Extranjeros: Juntos en el Camino de Esperanza, los
Obispos de los EE.UU. y México declaran que la migración debe ser impulsada no por necesidad, sino por opción.
Los Obispos creen que esta meta puede ser alcanzada examinando las causes a la raíz y trabajando para eliminar
las condiciones de desigualdad en los países de origen. En este taller veremos las causas y aprenderemos lo que la
Iglesia en México y Centro América está haciendo para dirigirse a ellas. Compartiremos herramientas para que
los jóvenes y sus comunidades sean parte de una solución de largo plazo que ayudara a nuestros hermanos y
hermanas migrantes vivir en paz y dignidad. Utilizando recursos de Catholic Relief Services (CRS) iniciaremos un
plan para la Solidaridad Global.
Mrs. Susan Kadota Después de servir como misionero en El Salvador por 2 1/2 años, Susan trabajó en la sede de Catholic Relief Services en Baltimore educando
católicos en la solidaridad global y dirigiendo relaciones solidarias. En 2012 se graduó con una Maestría en Teología Pastoral de la Universidad Loyola Marymount
y trabaja como voluntaria y hace gestión política en temas de inmigración.

A57 La Oración: ¡Una Conversación de Dos Personas Para Jóvenes!
Si estas buscando una manera para hacer la oración mas divertida para los jóvenes, o quizás para ti mismo, entonces este es el taller para ti. Alguna vez te has preguntado, "¿Porque los jóvenes no toman mas tiempo de su día
para orar?" Si les preguntas, muchos de darán una de tres respuestas: 1) ¡Es aburrido! 2) No tengo tiempo
3) Dios nunca me contesta. En este taller nos dirigiremos a las tres respuestas de estos obstáculos. El tener una
conversación personal, intima, y divertida con Dios es más fácil de lo que tú piensas. ¡Y lo mejor de todo es que
será una conversación de dos personas! Ya no nomás serás tú hablando, sino aprenderás a oír las respuestas de
Dios. Así que recuerda, si oyes que suena tu celular …pudiera ser Dios que te esta regresando la llamada!
Miss Isela Magallanes ha trabajado con jóvenes por 13 años. Lo que empezó como trabajo voluntario de pronto se convirtió en una misión amada. Isela enseño
clases de Confirmación por siete años y continúa dando temas para retiros de jóvenes y adultos, el Ministerio de Jóvenes, y el Congreso Regional. Ella ha enseñado
todo desde kínder hasta RICA, pero su amor permanece guiando a los jóvenes. Isela recibió su diploma en Sociología de CSULB y actualmente trabaja como Oficial
de Correcciones en una Juvenil.

B10 Developing Faith-Filled Families
In this year of faith, how can we help children encounter Christ within our classrooms as well as support
parents in developing the faith of their children as well as their own? From faith-filled experiences in the
classrooms to take-home faith activities for families, come and receive resources that will help you support
the children and their parents along their journey.
Mrs. Cristina Alba is the Director of Religious Education at St. John Vianney in Hacienda Heights as well as a Consultant for RCL Benziger. Her prior work
as an elementary school teacher as well as a catechist for the past 10 years have helped her develop a successful Family Catechesis program at the parish. She is also
currently involved in the Advanced Catechetical Ministries through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Southern California for St. Mary's College of California in Moraga graduating in 2000 with a BS in Psychology and Religious Studies. She then proceeded into a
pastoral ministry program at the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley, California. Completing her MA for a Multicultural Church in 2004 she remained in
the bay area 3 more years as a High School Youth Ministry and Confirmation Coordinator at the Catholic Community of Pleasanton. Moving back to the Los
Angeles Area she took the Campus Ministry position at San Gabriel Mission High School where she has been teaching religion and psychology for the last 8 years
and was recently promoted to Assistant Principal Dean of Student Life. Raquel was commissioned in 2012 as a Master Catechist for the state of California.
B13 The Blessed Virgin Mary in Scripture and Tradition
The Blessed Virgin Mary is a central figure in Scripture, the life of Christ and our Church, yet her life and what
we know about her remains rather hidden. Yet, if we really look, we can discover more about her than what initially meets our eye. We will examine Mary's unique relationship with the Trinity and why it is important to honor her. We will also examine the Church's teaching about her immaculate conception and assumption, and look
at Mary's titles of "Mother of God" and "Queen."

teach by our actions and humanness? Jesus did, yes?

Mr. Warren G. Kunkle III is presently a sales representative for William H. Sadlier Inc. He is a Master Catechist and volunteers in his parish as the High
School Confirmation Parent Formation Coordinator. He has also served as a Parish Administrator, Youth Minister/Confirmation Coordinator and a variety of other
ministries over the past 25 years. With his wife, Elga and their three teen-age sons’, a broader understanding of the realities of our “domestic” church and its unique
challenges, will be fore-front in this presentation.

Rabbi Michael Lotker comes to us with a wealth of experience. A Phi Beta Kappa/Magna Cum Laude physicist, he spent the bulk of his first career in the alternative energy business, working in windpower, solar and geothermal energy. About 500 of the windmills that are spinning in Palm Springs, California were financed and installed by a company that Mike was President of. In 2003, he was ordained as a rabbi at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles, where he also received
his Master of Hebrew Letters degree. He presently Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Ner Ami in Camarillo, California and Community Rabbi for the Jewish Federation of
Ventura County. In addition to his studies, Mike has published a book for the Paulist Press entitled "A Christian's Guide to Judaism."

Sr. Edith Prendergast is currently the Director of Religious Education of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and directs the Annual Religious Education Congress. This
event attracts over 40,000 participants annually. She holds a Doctorate in Ministry from Claremont School of Theology, and a Master's Degree in Theology from
Boston College. She is a frequent speaker nationally and locally and has written and contributed to several articles on Spirituality and Catechesis.

Early Childhood Board for 14 years. Jan has two grown children ages 26 and 23, and a teenage son who still helps her prepare crafts for the workshops she teaches!
She has presented at the RECongress in Anaheim, and at the regional congresses throughout the the L.A. Archdiocese .
Ms. Luz Elena Frias. For the past five years, Luz Elena has taught Kindergarten and third grade in the public school system. She has a Master Degree in Education
from Cal State Long Beach. Luz Elena has presented workshops at the Religious Education Congress, as well as regional congresses throughout the archdiocese. Luz has
been an Early Childhood Advisory Board Member for 10 years.

B53 Mejorando Tu Auto Estima
El mandamiento nuevo que nos dejó Jesús fue: “Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. Pero esta parte final parece
que nos trae un poco de problemas. La cultura occidental hace énfasis en amar a tus hijos, amar a tu esposa (o),
amar a tu madre, ama a tus amigos. Para eso hasta días festivos hay: navidad, San Valentín, día de las madres.
Días importantes sin duda, pero no hay ningún día para nosotros mismos, para aprender a querernos a nosotros
mismos. En este taller vamos a hablar un poco a cerca de este tema porque si no nos aprendemos ha amar a nosotros mismos como vamos proveerle amor a otros.
Mr. Luis Diaz es creador del programa social “Emoción Activa” el cual ofrece una serie de talleres informativos a cerca de problemas sociales como la violencia en
las pandillas, la drogadicción y la violencia doméstica entre otros. Nacido en Puerto Rico posee un bachillerato en Comunicación de la Universidad de Puerto Rico
en Arecibo. Fue coordinador del grupo de jóvenes Génesis en Puerto Rico y ha trabajado con jóvenes con problemas relacionados a las drogas. Fue redactor y reportero interno de Univisión Radio en Puerto Rico y productor del segmento Conocedores del programa radial Frecuencia Alterna. Actualmente es Asistente del Ministro
de Jóvenes de la Parroquia Nuestras Señora del Santo Rosario en Sun Valley California y es conferencista de la arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles en los distintos congresos
de educación religiosa. Actualmente es ministro litúrgico de los lectores en le parroquia Nuestra Señora del Santo Rosario en Sun Valley.

es el corazón del Misterio Pascual. Como vivimos este Misterio? como proclamamos este Misterio? Como
catequistas estamos mostrando el Misterio? El Misterio debe ser el corazón de nuestra catequesis. Nos damos
cuenta que a la gente a la que evangelizamos en cierto grado todavía están buscando a Cristo y el significado que
el Evangelio puede tener para sus vidas. En este taller profundizaremos en las Sagradas Escrituras y la Tradición especialmente en los documentos del Concilio Vaticano II, la invitación a una Nueva Evangelización del Beato
Juan Pablo II, la constante invitación a la esperanza de Benedicto XVI (Spe Salvi), el CIC y la más reciente
invitación de el Papa Francisco de no temer a proclamar a Cristo con nuestra vida si es preciso. Traiga su Biblia!

B56 Como Traer a Dios a Niños y Jóvenes en Crisis
Los niños de hoy afrentan una niñez muy distinta a la niñez de años atrás. Rodeados de dolor y violencia, es
difícil para ellos entender el concepto de un bueno y amoroso Dios que perdona. En este taller hablaremos sobre
como traer a Dios a estos niños de una manera que ellos comprendan. Una de las crises en los cuales nos enfocaremos incluirán: pandillas y el uso de drogas, violencia domestica y abuso de niños, separación de padres, la
pérdida de un ser querido, y el estrés de ser un adolecente. Aun en medio de la situación más grave, ahí está
presente Dios. Es el deber que se nos ha encargado el ayudar a nuestros niños a encontrarlo.

Chaplain Juan Pablo Miramontes Born and raised in Los Angeles. Graduated from the University of La Verne with a B.A. in Religious Studies and also has a
Masters in Organizational Management. He has worked at several parishes in the Archdiocese as a Youth/Confirmation Coordinator and Consultant. He presently is
the Chaplain at the Lanterman Developmental Center in Pomona, CA; a state institution that serves individuals with intellectual disabilities. He has worked with this
particular community for the past 11 years.

retreats, and given several workshops at the San Pedro and San Fernando Regional Congresses. I received the Archbishop's Recognition of Ministry Award in 2011.

saints to heal, serve, set free and evangelize the people of their time. If you are seeking to deepen your
ability to bring the life-changing, transforming power of the Gospel to the people of our time, then this
workshop is for you!
Mr. Bobby Vidal is the Director of Evangelization & Lay Formation for Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Santa Clarita. He is a Master Catechist,
a trained Spiritual Director and a Facilitator of the 19th Annotation of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. He has served in parish ministry for over 18
years.
C21 "Bloom Where You Are Planted." St. Theresa of Lisieux.
So many times we find ourselves not where we want to be and wondering what we did to get there and what we
can do to get out of it. Based on the Book of Jonah and the wisdom of St. Theresa of Lisieux this workshop
will teach us not only to accept the conditions that God sends us, but to embrace them and thrive in them.
Forgiveness, discernment, patience, and the rewards that come with it will be talked about.
Ms. Luella Wagner has taught in Catholic schools for 19 years at both the elementary and high school level. She has taught in Los Angeles, CA, Sao Paulo,
Brazil, American Samoa, and most recently the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana. She recently finished her memoir about her
experiences in Catholic education. She has a teaching credential from UCLA and an MA in Educational Theatre from New York University.

Ms. Katie Zeigler serves the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as Consultant for Youth Ministry & Confirmation in the Office of Religious Education. For over 15
years, she has served as Youth Ministry/Confirmation coordinator, volunteer team member, and retreat facilitator in several parishes throughout the Los Angeles
area. Katie is pursuing an M.A. in Pastoral Theology at LMU and is a member of the National Association of Catholic Youth Ministry Leaders.

Mr. Hugo Isaac Alvarado ex actor de telenovelas y convertido por Cristo en Misionero. Director del Ministerio "Con mucha Fe" que se enfoca en la evangelización familiar. Es el autor del personaje de "la niña Morita" que aparece en cds y videos ayudando a la catequesis. Es predicador y da conferencias a nivel nacional
en grupos de oración, retiros y reuniones de papas en la catequesis. Es el creador del método de liberación emocional llamado "METAMORFESI" que por medio de
técnicas actorales y artísticas busca liberar las experiencias negativas en la infancia del Adulto. Da talleres de Sanación Interior a través del Arte y la Espiritualidad.

Nosotros no elegimos ser Catequistas porque somos llamados por nuestro Señor. Al mismo tiempo, El nos llama a
servir a nuestros niños excepcionales, aquellos que tienen necesidades especiales. Esta situación nos convierte
automáticamente en catequistas excepcionales. Este taller le mostrara como usted puede ser una catequista excepcional y recibir ese llamado de Nuestro Señor.
Miss. Jennifer Ayón ha servido como Catequista de Educación Religiosa por 10 años primero con niños y actualmente sirve como catequista de Confirmación.
Jennifer recibió una Maestría de Ciencias en Consejería y un Bachillerato de Ciencias en Servicios de Rehabilitación; su énfasis es en ayudar a personas con discapacidades a lograr sus metas personales, sociales y vocacionales. Actualmente ella esta inscrita en el Curso de Especialización para Maestría en Catequesis para la
Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles.

En este taller hablaremos de la violencia doméstica y aquí dividiremos el mismo en dos partes que serán la violencia física que es la más fácil de notar e identificar y la violencia psicológica y emocional que es la más difícil de

problema social al punto que ya se ha comenzado a llamar: Violencia Familiar.

Ms. Margarita Flores, sirve como, Directora de Vida Parroquial en la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús en Compton. Contratada como Asociada Pastoral en
septiembre primero del 2007. Comisionada por el Cardenal Rogelio Mahony el 8 de mayo del 2008, dieciséis meses más tarde instalada por el obispo Alexander
Salazar en la Región de San Pedro el primero de Septiembre del 2009 como Directora de la Vida Parroquial. Canon 517.2 Margarita cuenta con una Maestría en
Divinidades del Seminario Teológico de Fuller en Pasadena Ca. Margarita tiene 6 hijos 4 varones y 2 mujeres y ha servido a la iglesia por más de 30 años en
ministerios, programas y organizaciones no lucrativas alrededor de la pastoral parroquial.

en Psicología, además de ser un Maestro de Catequistas. Ha sido Director de Educación Religiosa por más de veinte años en dos parroquias distintas de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. Su experiencia ministerial incluye trabajo con jóvenes, encarcelados, evangelización y catequesis. Giovanni y su esposa han criado una familia
de cuatro jóvenes adultos llenos de vida y energía.

Mr. Luis Manuel Torres originario de Zacatecas, México; 1972 emigro a los Estados Unidos, estudiando el las escuelas publicas, ingreso a la Universidad
Xaveriana de Ohio; inicio los estudios para la preparación de sacerdocio con los Misioneros Combonianos del Corazón de Jesus; regresando a Los Ángeles desde
1986 trabajando en la Oficina de Educación Religiosa en el Ministerio de Jóvenes Adultos; miembro activo de la Mesa Consultiva de Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles
Ministerios de VIH/Sida; Pastoral Juvenil; desde 2003 siendo Administrador/Capellán con Interlink Home Health and Hospice; desde 2008-Saint Camilus
Pastoral Center for Spiritual Care providing Chaplain Services to patients at LAC+USC Medical Center in the Trauma Center.
C62 La Espiritualidad Ignaciana y el Discernimiento
Esta conferencia estará enfocada para todos los que trabajan en la pastoral de adultos / jóvenes y padres de
familia. Aquí aprenderás sobre la vida de Ignacio de Loyola y su legado, los conceptos básicos de la espiritualidad ignaciana, reglas sobre el discernimiento, movimientos del espíritu bueno y el espíritu malo así como también haremos ejercicios breves de oración que te pueden apoyar en tu espiritualidad como líder.
Mr. Ernesto Vega Actualmente es el Coordinador del Ministerio de Formación de Fe y Educación Religiosa para Adultos de Habla Hispana de la Arquidiócesis
de Los Ángeles. Obtuvo una licenciatura doble, una en filosofía y otra en español, del Seminario Arquidiócesano de San Juan. Ernesto escribió su tesina de licenciatura sobre la Lectura simbólica de la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Ernesto también obtuvo una maestría en Psicoterapia Familiar y de Parejas de la
Universidad de Loyola Marymount (LMU) y escribió su tesis sobre las Familias Inmigrantes Mexicanas en Psicoterapia. Él está en el proceso de obtener una maestría en teología pastoral con concentración en dirección espiritual de LMU. Ernesto tiene una pasión por las artes, la sicología y la espiritualidad.

Mr. Douglas E. Zúñiga Nacido en Nicaragua, ha vivido en los EE.UU. desde 1989. Es graduado del colegio FIDM como diseñador gráfico y actualmente
está terminando su Maestría en Ministerio Pastoral en el Seminario San Juan en Camarillo. Douglas es Maestro Catequista de la arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles y
colabora con la División de Educación Primaria en las áreas de formación de catequistas y talleres litúrgicos en Inglés y Español. Fue Coordinador de Educación
Religiosa de la parroquia Nuestra Señora del Santo Rosario en Sun Valley, y es miembro de una pequeña comunidad de fe desde hace 15 años, y es director de un
coro de su parroquia. Tiene experiencia como catequista de niños y adultos, retiros de preparación sacramental para padres e hijos, así como formación para catequistas a nivel básico y avanzado en la arquidiócesis. The Office of Religious Education in the San Pedro Pastoral Region (SPPR) will recognize volunteer
catechists in the various deaneries who have served their parishes with marked excellence, dedication and
passion for ministry. Each of us can almost instantly bring to mind a model teacher who is always the first to
arrive and the last to depart; willing in every circumstance to offer time, talent and treasure; and in the
greatness of their service, inspires others to give their best to the children, adolescents and adults under their
care. The Annual SPPR Excellence in Catechetical Service Awards will pay homage to those catechists
who have given their utmost in ministry.
The Parish Catechetical Leader (DRE, CRE, CYM), in consultation with their leadership and advisory
councils, are asked to identify a single catechist from their parish to submit for nomination for the 2013 SPPR
Excellence in Catechetical Service Awards. In selecting a nominee, please choose an individual whose
service and teaching has left an indelible imprint on the spiritual life of the religious education program and
the parish at large. Specific examples and accomplishments should be noted. Be sure to describe the
candidate’s contributions and characteristics that demonstrate excellence in every respect. Submit the

The SPPR Excellence in Catechetical Service Awards will be presented at the opening liturgy of
the 2013 Religious Education Congress on September 28th, at St. Pius X/St. Matthias Academy, in Downey.

in a unique way by Bishop Oscar A. Solis and the community of the faithful who gather for this annual event.
Recipients will be contacted a week prior to Congress to ensure their presence and to allow the honoree to
