CELEBRATING, SUPPORTING & ENJOYING THE TREASURES OF THE VATICAN MUSEUMS
Winter ~ 2016
Ohio Funds 2016 Restoration Project
The Ohio Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts
in the Vatican Museums, is proud to
announce its latest restoration project for
2016 the Tapestry of Diana by Le Gobelins.
T
his magnificent tapestry was woven between 1728 and 1740 and is
based on the design of Pierre-Josse Perrot and was presented to the Duke
of Nivernois in 1748 upon his departure to Rome. The presence of Diana
in this tapestry transforms it into a celebration of the hunt, which was a
popular pastime of the nobility during this time period. The tapestry is made
of wool and silk with golden and silver threads and is approximately 12 feet
by 9 feet. The restoration work to be completed include micro-vacuuming
to remove the dust and pollution, washing in demineralized water and
non-ionic surfactant and removal of older interventions that have become
harmful to the tapestry. Once this beautiful tapestry is restored to its former
glory it will be returned to the Room of Solomon in St. John Lateran. Tapestry of Diana by Le Gobelins

We’re off to a wonderful, fresh, new start
to the year with exciting things in store
for our chapter. Detailed planning of the
many interesting events are in the works
this year, including our Ohio chapter trip to
Rome this fall. Our Rome/Vatican trip will
be announced in detail, next month. I hope
you all can join me on this trip as we will
experience first hand the magnificent
works of art that you so generously
support at the museums.
As Easter fast approaches, it is a time which
brings hope for new beginnings in nature,
people and within one’s self and signifies
renewal of faith and spirit to all. I know like
myself, you all have time treasured Easter
traditions that are held close to your hearts.
Wishing you all a wonderful beginning to

Fr. Daniel Hennessy
r. Mark Haydu will be stepping down from his position of
International Director of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums.
Fr. Mark welcomed his replacement, Fr. Daniel Hennessy to the Patrons office
on January 7th. Fr. Mark will be working with Fr. Daniel to acclimate him to the
duties of International Director until June of this year. Fr. Daniel is a native
Texan and is fluent in both Spanish and Italian due to his work in Venezuela,
Mexico and Italy. He has held pastoral, administrative and development roles
in his more than 20 years of religious life.
Fr. Daniel has been busy in his first few weeks in the Patrons office becoming
acquainted with most of the curators and staff of the Vatican Museums. I am
hopeful that we will meet our new International Director, Fr. Daniel Hennessy
in the coming months.
We wish Fr. Mark well as he begins his new assignment in the U.S. with the
Legionaries of Christ. Fr. Mark will continue to work with the North American
Patrons Office. We are hopeful that we will be seeing more of Fr. Mark now
that he will be based in the U.S., and we extend our wishes for a successful
transition to Fr. Daniel and the staff of the Patrons office.-

his past November two of our Ohio members traveled to Rome to attend the wedding of a good friend. Kim
Vallar Snyderburn and her daughter Carolyn Snyderburn Evans started their journey in late October and enjoyed
the beauty of Venice and Florence before arriving in Rome in time for the wedding. Kim and Carolyn were thrilled
to receive the special tours and behind the scenes access that are only afforded to Patron members. Kim referred
to the Patron emblem label pin as the “magic pin”. They were able to bypass the long lines at the entrance to the
museums twice in one day! -

O
Ohio Chapter Celebrates 10 year
anniversary at Annual Holiday Party
ver 150 members and guests celebrated the holidays and the chapter’s ten year anniversary this year at the
annual Holiday Celebration. Our event was held at the Cleveland Botanical Garden and everyone viewed their signature
spectacular “Glow” event that is held within the gardens.
Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeurves followed by a delightful evening of dinner and dancing. Monsignor Terence
Hogan offered a toast to our chairman, Lorraine Dodero and her dedication and effort the past ten years to creating the
successful Ohio Chapter. After a delicious dinner of Grilled Filet of Beef, Cabernet Demi Glace, and Seared Fillet of Salmon
with Lemon Caper Sauce, Patron members hit the dance floor and enjoyed the 60’s musical entertainment from the
“The Pop Tarts”. It was a beautiful evening celebrating our members and the Ohio
Chapter’s many accomplishments over the past ten years. -

Pane di
Pasqua
(Italian
Easter
Bread)
mangiare
Sweet Italian Easter Bread is a traditional Italian Easter
accompaniment and is sure to impress everyone at
your Easter table. This recipe can be made as individual
loafs or one long braided ring.
INGREDIENTS:
½ cup unsalted butter + 1 tablespoon, divided
1 ¼ cup milk
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
½ cup granulated sugar
3 large eggs, divided
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3-4 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup simple syrup
Nonpareil sprinkles
6 large eggs, uncooked and colored
TEN YEAR AWARD MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE:
Gisela & George Szeretvai, Maryellen Fedeli, George Beckman
Combine milk and 1/2 cup of butter in saucepan over
low heat and cook until butter melts. Pour butter
mixture into bowl of stand mixer.
Allow mixture to cool to 110°-120° degrees. Add yeast
and sugar. Stir to combine. Allow mixture to stand for 10
minutes so yeast can bloom.
Meanwhile: Beat 2 eggs and set aside. In a separate bowl
beat the remaining egg and add 1 tablespoon water and
whisk to combine. Set aside.
Add 2 beaten eggs, vanilla extract and 2 cups of flour.
Combine with the dough hook attachment. Add flour 1/2
cup at a time until dough is not sticky anymore. Knead
bread dough until smooth with the dough hook, about 5
minutes. Turn out onto floured surface and knead until
you have a smooth ball. Place 1 tablespoon butter in
large glass bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Place
dough in greased bowl and flip to coat both sides. Cover
with plastic wrap and a towel and let rise until doubled
(about 90 minutes). Turn dough out onto a lightly floured
surface. Punch dough down, divide into 12 pieces. Roll
each piece to form a 1 inch thick rope about 12-14 inches
long. Taking two pieces, braid together, pinching the ends,
and loop into a circle. Place circle on a parchment lined
baking sheet and lightly cover and let rise until doubled
in size (about 60 minutes). Preheat oven to 350°. Brush
each bread ring with egg wash and set dyed Easter egg
in the center of the ring, gently pushing down to make
an indentation in the bread. Bake until golden brown,
approximately 20-25 minutes.

Remove from pan and place on cooling rack. Brush
each Easter bread with simple syrup and sprinkle with
Nonpareil sprinkles. Serve and enjoy!
Note: Simple Syrup can be made by combining 1 part
sugar and 1 part water in a saucepan over medium
heat. Cook until it comes to a boil and sugar dissolves.
Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Store in
refrigerator until ready to use (keeps for several days).
