The Standards Manager
About the Standards Manager
Until the Standards Manager was added to Metrix, the only way to modify or delete a
Standard was to find one of the Layouts that used the Standard. You could then make
changes to the Standard and save it as a new Standard, or delete the Standard.
The Standards Manager changes all this. It is now possible to filter the Standards in a
project by the properties of those Standards, find only the Standard or Standards you
wish to change, and then save the changes to the Standard.
The Standards can be filtered using the Standard Manager with various parameters
under these general categories:
„„ Press
„„ Binding Machine
„„ Product Type
„„ Printing Method
„„ Fold Name
„„ Finished Dimension
„„ Finished Dimensions
„„ Sheet Width
„„ Sheet Height
„„ Lap
„„ Spine Trim
„„ Jog Trim
„„ Creator
„„ Creation Date
The Standards Manager functions much like the Component Picker, so if you have
used that Metrix feature, then you will find the Standards Manager operates in a similar
fashion.

Opening the Standards Manager
The Standards Manager, like the Database, can only be opened when no Metrix project is open. Either close the current project, or start the Standards Manager just after
you start Metrix, but before you open a project.
You open the Standards Manager by clicking on the Standards Manager button.

Filtering Standards with the Standards Manager
When you click on the Add Filter button, an Options Menu will appear just above the
Standards list. This is the menu where you select which Property you would like to
use for the filter.
There is a table in the Standards Chapter of the User Guide listing all of the Properties
on this menu, and the additional menu items or text fields that will be added to filter
the Standards. Explanations of each option are also given in the table.
When you want to remove an item from the Filter list, just click on the red “x” on the
right-hand side of the filter option. This is the Delete Filter button.

Once you make a selection on the Filter Options menu, additional menus or text fields
will pop up to the right of the Filter Option so you can refine which properties should
used to filter the Standards.
A complete table of the Filter Options and the additional menus and text fields is
included in the Standards chapter of the EFI Metrix User Guide.

Editing and Saving the Standard
In the Standard Explorer window you can edit the Properties of the Standard, run an
Auto Layout if necessary, and save your changes by clicking on the Save button.
Various Components of the Layout can also be modified if necessary.
In case you need to add Marks to the Standard, the Marks menu is available while
editing in the Standard Explorer.
The elements in the Layout will be more generic than the regular Layout since many
of the elements (e.g., head, jog, or component dimensions) are not specific to the
Standard being displayed.
When you wish to return to the Standards Manager dialog, click on the Standards
Manager button.

Component Picker
As long as a project has only a few products, and a few layouts, it is fairly simple to
find the individual components in order to modify them.
But what if a project has hundreds of products, and dozens of layouts? Finding and
changing components could then become a daunting task.
Beginning with Metrix 2015.0, a new feature has been added to make the job of finding and changing multiple components as easy as sorting and filtering items in a list.
This feature is called the Component Picker.
The basic elements of the Component Picker include:
„„ A table in the view area where each row represents a component in the current
Metrix Project, and each column represents a component property.
„„ A dialog to select different component properties to display in the table. This
gives the user the ability to filter by only those properties pertaining to the current
project.
„„ Simple-to-use but comprehensive filtering functions that can be tailored to the
specific needs of the user.
„„ Boolean AND, OR, and NOT searches at the click of a mouse, or with a menu
selection.
„„ The ability to sort a column ascending or descending by clicking on the header,
much like other tables in Metrix today where the column order can be rearranged.
„„ The ability to modify or tag multiple filtered items in the Project Explorer.
„„ Multiple filtering parameters can be saved as a set and then re-loaded for use with
the same or other projects.

Opening the Component Picker Table
You access the Component Picker by clicking on the Component Picker tab above
the View Area.
Click Component Picker Tab
Viewing the Component Picker Table
After you click on the Component Picker tab, the Component Picker table will appear
in the View Area.
Which property columns appear in the table is completely user definable.

Filtering and Changing the Component Properties
A robust filtering system allows the user to find specific components using Boolean
And, Or, or Not searches.
Further selection of components can be made by selecting single, contiguous, or
noncontiguous components.
Once the desired components are selected, their common properties can be modified
simultaneously using the Properties Editor as you would normally.

Change the Properties
Saving and Loading Filter Sets
Once you have established the filters for the components you wish to modify,
you can save those filters as a Filter Set. You can then load that same set into the
Component Picker any time you wish to change components using those same
settings.

Auto Plan Selector
Auto Plan used to present the user with the multiple layouts Mextrix produced, and
when the user selected a layout, it was opened, and the others were no longer visible.
The Auto Plan Selector has changed all that.
This new feature allows the user to preview each Auto Plan result on a layout-bylayout basis. The user no longer needs to wonder if the “next best” result was actually
preferable, since the user can quickly compare all the layouts.

Cutting Machines
When planning jobs, Metrix now considers cutting using a new Cutting Machines
equipment type. When combined with basis weight information, Cutting Machines
information allows Metrix to determine the optimal cutting plan and costs for a job.
Cutting Machine specifications can be entered into the Database in the same way as
for other kinds of equipment.
Cutting Machines can then be selected for use in the Properties Editor just like any
other equipment.

Basis Weights
This is a new Database resource that allows Metrix to understand stock weight/square
inch for imperial stocks. This helps Metrix accurately calculate cutting costs of a
particular stock for a job.
Clicking on the New button allows you to access the New Basis Weight dialog where
you can supply the properties for a new Basis Weight.
These numbers will be used to calculate the pound weight of the Basis Weight and
from there, the weight of any size sheet of Text.

Same Size Algorithm
Auto Plan has a new Same Size algorithm option that dramatically increases the
speed of Metrix Auto Plan. This algorithm can be applied when all products submitted
to Auto Plan have the same finished size, bleed and offcut.
When the product size, bleed, and offcut are the same, Same Size becomes available
as an option on a pull-down menu in the Algorithm field. Otherwise, the only option
is “Classic.”

Export Profiles
Metrix now has the ability to save multiple export settings as an Export Profile. This
allows the user to quickly and consistently select between multiple export file types.
For example, a user might have one Export Profile that exports a PDF to a hot folder
on a RIP without exporting JDF cutter data, another Profile to write populated JDF to
one workflow hot folder with cutting data, and yet another Profile to export unpopulated JDF to a different workflow hot folder with JDF cutting and binding machine
data.
Export Profiles make complex exports simple and consistent across multiple users.
When you are in the Export dialog, you can adjust the settings for export, and then
click on the “Save Settings as Profile…” button to save the settings as a set. The Profile
will then be available for selection on the “Export Profile” menu.

Import and Export of Mark Sets
Metrix now allows the user to export and import Mark Sets from and to the Database.
This allows the user to maintain Mark Set consistency across multiple locations, or
easily reload an earlier version of a Mark Set.
These options are found in the Mark Sets dialog in the Database.

Metrix now allows the user to export with a White Knockout line on either side of a
Trim Mark, External Fold Mark, or Internal Fold Mark. The user selects these settings in
the Export dialog under the Trim Mark and Fold Mark options.

The width of the White Knockout can be set for:
„„ None — no knockout.
„„ 2x — Mark plus knockout is twice the Mark width.
„„ 3x — Mark plus knockout is three times the Mark width.
