Set Yourself up for Significant Sales Success in 2016 by John Chapin
If your business runs on the calendar year, it’s that time of year again. As of January first the “new-business” slate has been wiped
clean and the pressure is on to produce. We all know the basics: come up with goals and objectives, develop a plan, determine
why you absolutely have to make it happen, and then get to work. That said, if you want 2016 to be significantly better than 2015
it’s going to take an attitude shift and massive action. And while you’re charging ahead every day getting done what needs to be
done, it will be helpful to keep these three lesser-known success ideas in mind.
You won’t be as successful as you otherwise could be if…
…you’re not uncomfortable and scared every day.
In order to grow personally and professionally you must step out of your comfort zone and face your fears every day. If you’ve
read my past articles, you know I proselytize that the inability to deal effectively with fear and discomfort is the main reason
people fail in sales. Both lead to a lack of activity in the three most important sales areas: prospecting, follow up, and closing. The
solution is to get comfortable being uncomfortable and to act in spite of fear. Make that call you’ve been putting off for months.
Forget the e-mail and go see that prospect in person. Find the biggest, scariest prospect you can, and make the call. You know who
and what your demons are. You know which dragons you’re afraid to face. If you don’t face them you’ll always wonder what might
have been. You’ll lie on your deathbed with regrets and ultimately take those regrets to your grave. We all know the saying that,
“The coward does a thousand deaths, the hero only one.” The reality is, while the coward imagines the worst, never makes call,
and does the face the death of their self-esteem and sales career, the hero usually wins and doesn’t die at all. The hero discovers
that the dragon or demon they thought was so bad wasn’t, it was just their imagination giving in to fear and discomfort. Finally,
as long as we’re digging up old sayings and clichés, remember, for most people the ship doesn’t come in, they have to swim out to
it.
…you’re not making any mistakes.
There’s a quote that reads, “To discover the limits of the possible, you must go beyond them into the impossible.” All great skiers,
skaters, and race-car drivers know that if you don’t fall or crash, you’re not pushing the envelope and you probably aren’t getting
any better. In sales, if you’re not making mistakes, you aren’t taking enough action. When you try new things, push yourself to new
heights, and put yourself in uncomfortable situations in order to get comfortable, you are going to make some mistakes. Part of
the growing process is finding out where the edge of the envelope is and then coming up with more efficient and effective ways to
deal with that edge. As a side note, keep in mind that I’m not talking about careless mistakes due to indifference or mistakes that
you keep making over and over again. That’s plain ignorance and those mistakes are inexcusable. Again, I’m talking about the kind
of mistakes that come from taking calculated risks and massive action.
…you’re not running into new problems.
As your business grows, your problems naturally change and get bigger. Your goal is to create new problems, big problems,
because the bigger the problem, the bigger the opportunity associated with it. Growing your customer base to a size that’s too
large to handle is an example of a good problem. Realizing that you have too many appointments on a given day is a good problem. Having to significantly increase your estimated tax payments because you’re making too much money is another example of a
good problem. Any problem you run into in business has a solution, though the solution may not be easy and it may not be
without pain. That’s okay, small problems and no pain equals a small business with very little revenue. Again, your goal is big,
new problems.

We are now in a New Year... 2016! No better time than at the beginning of a new year, with new slate, to get motivated.
If you are in business, new or seasoned, you have most likely heard of Zig Ziglar, one of the great motivators of our age.
One of his many books, written in 1975, See You at the Top,was a best seller and is still in production. Another great
stimulator and idea book is Secrets of Closing the Sale.
Some of Zig Ziglar’s quotes may set you in the right direction or, at least, rejuvenate you, your sales and your goals.
* You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
* Selling is essentially a transfer of feelings.
* Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have 24-hour days.
* You are at the top when: You have made friends with your past, are focused on the present, and are optimistic about
your future.

What’s in the News
* Statins
Consider having a heart scan before starting to take statins,
suggests Khurram Nasir, MD, MP. A coronary artery calcium test
looks for signs of plaque in the heart - a significant risk factor
for heart attack. Patients with a zero calcium score may choose
to forgo statins and instead control cardiac risk through
lifestyle changes. The coronary artery test uses low-dose
radiation and typically costs about $100. Generally not covered
by insurance.
* Vitamin D / Knee Osteoarthritis
As reported by Fang Fang Zhang, PhD, MD, low vitamin D levels
are linked to progression of knee osteoarthritis. Patients found
to be clinically deficient in vitamin D were twice as likely to
experience worsening knee osteoarthritis as people with
sufficient vitamin D.
* Back Pain Cure; Todd Sinett, DC; Midtown Integrative
Health & Wellness; New York City.
Back pain can be the result of poor nutrition and poor digestion, which causes chronic inflammation that irritates muscles,
ligaments, tendons and/or nerves. Dietary changes could reduce
back pain.
How?
* Get enough fiber. If you’re often constipated or have infrequent bowel movements, you’ll have buildups of toxins that
increase inflammation and back pain. A high-fiber diet can fix
this and reduce your back pain.
* Cut back on caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that increases
levels of cortisol, a hormone that triggers inflammation. People
who drink a lot of coffee or other caffeinated beverages are
more likely to have painful muscle cramps and spasms. Tip:
Eliminate caffeine for two to three weeks to see if there is
improvement.
* Stay well-hydrated. Many people don’t drink water very often.
Water helps lubricate the spinal discs and can help prevent
fissures, cracks in the discs tht can allow the soft middle
portion to bulge out and press against a nerve.
Everyone with back pain should drink between four and 10
glasses of water a day.
* Eliminate all added sugar.
The average American consumes about 175 pounds of sugar a
year, according the Todd Sinett. A high-sugar diet irritates the
digestive tract, which can lead to back pain. Tip: Give up all
added sugar for at least three weeks to see if you get relief from
back pain. After that you can reintroduce a small amount of
sugar. If you add back a bit of sugar and your pain doesn’t
increase, you’ll know that you can enjoy some sugar.

* More effective meetings
For more effective meetings, use the 8-18-1800 guideline to
decide how many people to invite. Invite no more than eight
people if you want to solve a problem or make a decision.
For brainstorming, include up to 18 people. To provide updates,
invite everyone who needs to hear the information - but if all
attendees will provide an update, limit the number to 18.
To gather support and/ or rally the troops, aim for 1,800 people
or more for large companies - or include everyone in smaller

* Save on renter’s insurance.
Increase the deductible to the highest amount you can pay out of
pocket.
Decrease policy limits to just enough to cover the cost of replacing personal property.
Get a security system and install deadbolts and window lock.
Use the same insurer you use for auto insurance - this can save
you 20% on the rental policy.
Pay for the whole year in advance, avoiding the charge for
paying in installments.
Use automatic payments or paperless billing if you can’t pay the
whole year at once - some companies give discounts for this.
Ask about group discounts if you belong to a professional group.
Shop around- not all companies charge the same. Quit smoking
- some companies have surcharges for smokers.
Caution: Don’t try to save by declining replacement -cost
coverage. For a reasonable additional cost, an insurer will pay
