This F-4 Phantom aircraft was retired from active
duty and serves as a memorial to all veterans. One
of Marshalltown’s own, local resident Joe Latham,

Marshalltown
The historic Lincoln Highway was the first coast-tocoast motor road. This “Main Street across America”
traversed 12 states, from New York City to San
Francisco. In Marshall County, it went through the cities
of LeGrand, Marshalltown, LaMoille and State Center.

Considered an excellent example of the Italian
Renaissance Style. Designed by John C.
Cochrane, Chicago, a prominent designer of
this style of building. Constructed in 18841886. Changes keep with the building’s original design. Tours by appointment.
In July 2003 a statue of Marshalltown’s city founder,
Henry Anson, was placed on the courthouse lawn in
celebration of Marshalltown’s 150th Birthday. This
statue holds a time capsule from the city’s sesquicentennial year and will be opened in 2053.

in 2003! (1853-2003)
• Marshalltown Convention & Visitors Bureau
celebrated their 10th Anniversary in 2003.
• In 1987, a Monet painting was stolen from
the Fisher Community Center. With insurance
money a beautiful art gallery was built.
• Since 1939 caramels & chocolates have
been handmade, hand-dipped at Lillie Mae
Chocolate.
• Marshalltown was named “BBQ Capital of
Iowa” for the IA State BBQ Championships
that are held here every June.
• The Appleberry Farm has 12 acres covered
with 15 different varieties of apple trees.
