December 2013
Thank you Greater Manchester Nashua Board of
Realtors for raising $2,644.00 for us at the Annual
GMNBR Turkey Bowl in November. Many
GMNBR Members, sponsors and friends came
together at Merrimack Ten Pin to raise money for
New Horizons. This has become a fun tradition
where participants get to spend a few hours bowling while
raising funds and collecting food for New Horizons.

o far this year we have seen a staggering 75% increase in the number of meals
served to children in our soup kitchen and a 10% increase in senior citizens
coming in for a hot meal. In our homeless shelter, we are on track this fiscal year
to have our second highest bed night total in the last eight years. Last year was a
record year. We expect all these numbers to remain high through the winter season. It
costs $3,000 per day to operate New Horizons. Enclosed please find a pre-addressed
envelope to make your gift giving easier. Every donation helps to make a difference in
Our four mile walk in downtown Manchester is set for Sunday, May 18th.

NEW HORIZONS WALK AGAINST HUNGER
Thanks to the dozens of companies and organizations that held food and coat drives on our
behalf. There are way too many to list!! It is wonderful to see caring people realize there is a
problem and initiate positive action. Your help is most necessary and much appreciated!
On April 27th New Horizons will be the
beneficiary of this fun run! Color Me
Rad is a 5k with the sole purpose of
helping people smile. The event is not
competitive and not timed. Walkers and
runners are both welcome. Every 0.62 of
a mile there are “color stations” where
volunteers throw colored cornstarch on
the participants, turning them into
lovely, colorful running works of art. Save the date and look for more information to come on
our website.
someone’s life.
Far too often people passing by New Horizons comment
about the number of people waiting in line for our food
pantry, soup kitchen or homeless shelter. Because there is
no place to wait, clients are forced to stand in line through
all kinds of weather. Our goal for the new-year is to design
and build an indoor waiting area that will be constructed in
a portion of our food pantry. This will involve a
reconfiguring of the present pantry set up. The project will
be costly and to kick off our
fundraising for this waiting area, the
Singer family from Merchants
Automotive is contributing $25,000.
It is our hope that other individuals,
families and businesses will step
forward to assist us in making this
renovation a reality. If you are
interested in contributing either
financial or in kind support, please

Michelle Casale at 668-1877 ex. 125.

As we approach the end of 2013 and look ahead to 2014 I want to thank all of you for your support of this
organization that helps so many in our community. During the holidays, we are all bombarded with
advertisements promoting the latest and greatest electronic devices and toys and games that we can’t live
without. Everywhere we turn there are sales going on and people rushing off to do their holiday shopping.
Here at New Horizons we see folks who are more concerned with feeding themselves and their families
than they are with shopping for gifts. We see people who are thankful for a place to sleep and a hot
shower. To them that is a gift that means the most.
Although we continue to hear that the economy is improving, the number of individuals and families
seeking services at New Horizons is increasing. In order to meet the demand we are working harder than
ever to raise the necessary funds to meet the need. We can only do this with your help. As you and your
families prepare for this holiday season, please take a moment to think of those in our community who
are less fortunate. Your tax deductible donation in any amount will help us to help our friends and
neighbors who are in need.

Angie’s Kitchen Renovation
A wonderful $20,000 memorial donation, in honor of Sister Angie Whidden, from The Bean
Foundation has enabled us to completely renovate the kitchen at Angie’s Shelter for Women. This
was a much needed improvement which had been on our to-do list for years. The design and
installation was handled by Marc Cantin Cabinetry. This newly renovated kitchen better meets the
needs of the 17 residents by providing them with a functioning, efficient space that can more easily
accommodate them during mealtime. The renovation was completed in October and the residents
are raving about how wonderful it is! Thank you so much to The Bean Foundation for its generosity!

MERCHANTS DAY OF CARING
On Tuesday, November 19, a group of over 30 employees from Merchants Automotive Group showed
up ready to work at Angie’s Women’s Shelter for the Annual Merchants Day of Caring. Prior to the big
day, a number of
projects were mapped
out so everyone would
be ready to go first
thing in the morning.
The hard working
group built much
needed shelves, painted
our handicapped
bedroom as well as the
bathrooms and other areas that were in need of
freshening up, they cleaned out the cellar and turned a little used crafts room into a computer room for
clients of Angie’s. During the lunch break, a bar-b-que was held and the brand new gas grill that was
used to prepare lunch was donated to Angie’s. It truly was a day of caring by the wonderful employees
from Merchants Automotive.
