Closeness with your new baby is one of the best ways for you to learn about your baby and begin the important process of connecting with her or him. Madison Hospital encourages... Skin-to-skin time: As quickly as possible, new babies are safely placed skin-to-skin on the mother’s chest. All medical care is taken care of bedside while mom and baby enjoy skin-to-skin contact. This natural method is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and provides numerous physical and psychological benefits for both mom and baby. Babies who are delivered by Cesarean section or require immediate medical care will be placed skin-to-skin as soon as possible. Exclusive breastfeeding: Research has revealed many important benefits for both moms and babies. In addition to closeness, breastfeeding helps build resistance to illness and infections. Mothers who choose not to breastfeed will still be placed skin-to-skin with their baby while feeding. Our staff assists new parents in any way possible to ensure that their wishes are met. Uninterrupted time together: We know new parents want to introduce their new baby to family and friends very soon after delivery. The bonding time immediately after delivery is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and we encourage you to celebrate with family and friends only when you are ready. Involvement with first bath: While still in the delivery room, parents can assist with baby’s first bath. Benefits of skin-to-skin contact For babies: More stable heart rates, temperatures and blood sugars immediately after birth Breastfeed sooner, longer and more easily May cry less Helps reduce pain and ease the transition from the womb For moms: Helps with calmness and relaxation Decreases anxiety and postpartum pain Stimulates release of hormones that support breastfeeding and mothering Rest assured After your baby’s birth and your recovery, you will be moved to a private room on our Mother/Baby Unit. We know caring staff is focused on the comfort of your entire family. Rooming in: To promote bonding during the first days, newborns and moms share a room. Your support person may remain with you throughout your stay, and we welcome your family and friends to visit at your discretion. Breastfeeding support: Although breastfeeding is a natural process, our experienced nursing staff and certified lactation consultants are invaluable resources. They are specially-trained and available before, during and after your stay to provide breastfeeding education and personalized guidance. To speak with a Lactation Consultant, please call (256) 265-5651. Safety: All Madison Hospital employees wear unique photo identification badges and color-coded uniforms so you can easily recognize who they are. We also use matching parent/baby identification bracelets and an infant security system. We practice safe sleep techniques and provide safe sleep education before your baby is discharged. Additional guests are welcome to order from our Garden Café by phone to be delivered to your room so they can share in this special time.
