with Shough, who was waiting
by the truck. The owner of Lee’s
told deputies the items taken
were a transmission, brake
rotors and drums and about
700 pounds of various metal
vehicle parts. The next day, the
sheriff’s office received a tip
that Harden had been scraping
large amounts of metals in Lake
City, using a truck that matched
the description from the original
theft. Eventually, Harden and
Shough were brought in for
questioning and both admitted to
taking the scrap metal from Lee’s
and selling some of it in Lake
City. Bond was set at $15,000 for

charges.

“She made me what I am,”
Adkinson said. “I was getting

she needed things even though
she never asked for a thing. I

Adkinson is happy to describe
his lady love for anyone who

sparkle in his eye.
“She was tall, about 5 foot

jet-black hair,” he said. “As she

After college, Adkinson got a
job coaching in Cottondale and
then a little later in Blountstown.
He said he got a call one day
in 1965 from the principal of
BHS offering him a job as head
basketball coach and assistant
football coach. The job would
include a position teaching math.
“I came down to look things
over and liked what I saw, but
I told them there would have to
be a job for my wife teaching
fifth grade and that I could not
make the decision until she had
come and looked the place over,”
Adkinson said.
His wife liked what she saw
and the couple made the move.
For him, in his first year at
BHS, he was assistant to head
coach David Hurse when the
team won the 1965 and 66 state
championships.
She began
teaching fifth grade, a job
she filled for 17 years here in
Bradford County and a total of
34 years between here and her
earlier postings.
Adkinson is quick to tell
stories about his years at the high
school – most of them humorous.
“Charlie Johns used to keep
the clock for the football games
and he and I were talking during
a game and I made him a bet,”
Adkinson said. “I bet him $1 that
the next player to receive the ball
would run for a touchdown. He
took the bet. The next player that
received the ball ran with it and
made it about 20 yards or so, then
got sacked. I reached over and
took the money. When Charlie
looked at me, I told him, ‘I said
he would run for a touchdown, I
never said he would make one.’”
Atkinson and Philomena spent

days” together. When she was

much as when she was with
him. He spends his days with
his memories and cherishing
the visits he receives from
former students. He also enjoys
confounding the caregivers with
number puzzles and tricks and
following the Seminoles. He
said he likes college football
much better than professional.
“I don’t really like pro ball,”
he said. “They pass the ball too
much. I like it more mixed up,
a little passing, but more running

Adkinson has a strong faith
in God and his intervention in
human affairs – especially in his
relationship with Philomena.
“We never know what God

said. “I do not believe that there

doubts about that. I have seen
the proof in my life that he is
there. That’s all I need to know.”
