Special Needs Services
Integration Services
As part of our ongoing commitment to safely include participants
with disabilities in recreation programs, Special Needs Portfolio
Coordinators will assist individuals in selecting the most
appropriate program and/or level of support required through a leisure
counselling assessment and referral process.
Therapeutic Recreation Programs
The City of Ottawa, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Long
Term Care, Service Coordination, Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre
and several community organizations, hosts Therapeutic and Recreation
day programs throughout the city.
Full day programs currently being offered include ABI (Acquired Brain
Injury Program), SCEL (Support Community Enhanced Learning),
VARIETY (Adult day programs for people with developmental delay)
and SPIRIT (for medically fragile children). For information please
contact 613-580-2424 ext. 29283.
Social/Recreation Programs
Programs are offered throughout various community centres giving
children, youth and adults with special needs the opportunity to
participate in year round programs that provide recreation and social
programming. The social/recreation programs take place throughout the
city during days, evenings and weekends. The programs include a wide
range of options: community outings, social clubs, fitness, aquatics,
summer camps for children, youth and adults, health and wellness and
other leisure activities.
Shared Care
The Shared Care program offers specialized support for special needs
campers in mainstream summer camps with intentions of normalizing
the experience. There is a maximum of three weeks per child with a
1:3 staff to camper ratio. The above logo will appear beside camps
that offer this service.

Swimming Lessons
Level Assessment
If you are unsure of what level to
register you or your child for, drop into
any of our Leisure Swims and ask the
program supervisor to give you an
assessment. They can tell you exactly
which swimming level will best suit
you or your child’s abilities.
Program Ages
Children must be the required age at
the beginning of the session in order to
participate in the swimming classes.
Low Ratio Classes
Low ratio classes are regular programs
with approximately half the participants
of our regular classes. These programs
are more expensive, but allow more
individual attention to the participants.
Language of
Instruction
Swimming lessons are offered in the
language of advertisement. If you have
a francophone child who wishes to
participate in an English class, please
contact the program coordinator prior
to the lessons starting. We will make
every attempt to schedule the class
with a bilingual instructor.
613-521-4092, ext. 223.
Parents Day
On the fifth lesson, parents are welcome
to join their child’s swimming class to find
out how they are progressing. You can
either join the class by participating in the
water, or simply watch the class from
the pool deck.
Cancellations
Please note that it is sometimes necessary
for us to cancel or modify our existing
schedules and lessons. Please see
cancellation dates listed on your
swimming lesson receipts.

day of class.
Final Exams
Some certification courses require the
participants to complete a final swimming
exam in order to successfully obtain the
award. The final exam may be included in
the class time or may take place after the
course is over. Course participants will be
told the exam date on the first day of class.
Candidates must pass all award items to
receive certification.

to attend each class. If attendance is highly
recommended and candidates are unable to
attend it is their responsibility to learn the
