There are no borders between
east and west in the eclectic music
of Moody Amiri, a duo comprised
of Amir Amiri (santur) and Richard
Moody (viola). Inspired by the diversity and fluidity between their respective Persian and western classical and
jazz training, Amiri and Moody have
created an engaging and distinctive
sound fusing elements of traditional
Persian music with jazz, classical,
Indian, and modern spiritual styles.

Day on the Trail: Slocan Valley
Sunday, Jan. 25, 1-3 p.m. on the
Slocan Valley Rail Trail, Lemon Creek
photo submitted
The Slocan Valley Heritage Trail
Society(SVHTS) recently purchased this new
snowmobile for trail grooming thanks to
the generous support of the Heritage Credit
Union
The crew from the Slocan Valley
Heritage Trail Society (SVHTS) will
be setting up in the Lemon Creek area
for this year’s Day on the Trail event.
From there folks will be able to take
a short ski to check out the Arctic
and Trumpeteer swans which winter
over on the Slocan River in the Walter
Clough Wildlife Sanctuary.
There’ll be a bonfire waiting to
stay warm after your ski with refreshments available. You can catch up on
the latest Rail Trail news, check out
the new snowmobile and groomer
the Society recently purchased and/or
become a member of the group as well
as enjoy a great ski.
Best parking will be around the
Lemon Creek Trailhead or on Mon
Amie Rd. The snow is always deeper
at the north end of the valley and the
dedicated volunteer groomers have
been setting a good ski track and
keeping a lane open for skate skiers, in spite of the limited amount of
snow we’ve had so far.To get to the
Trailhead, turn left on Kennedy Rd.,
which is just south of Lemon Creek
on Highway 6.

Re-thinking the Ebola Crisis
Thursday, Jan. 22 7-8:30 p.m. at
the Mir Centre for Peace (301 Frank
Beinder Way)
Canadian development practitioners and medical professionals will
meet with the BC general public to
discuss and answer questions about
Ebola. This event aims to tackle a critical analysis of British Columbians’
perspective as global citizens. How
can we begin thinking in terms of ‘we’
rather than ‘us’ vs. ‘them’, and what
would that look like in the context of
the current Ebola crisis?

Nelson Police: aggressive hugger, intoxication, hydro scam
On Friday, Jan. 9 the Nelson
Police Department received multiple
calls about a male aggressively soliciting hugs from people near the businesses in the 100 block Anderson St.
The male had had left the area proper
to police arrival and was not identified
at the time.
Later that day the police received
a call requesting assistance where a
male had thrown out all of his roommates’ belongings on the lawn after
he was told by the roommate he was
moving out. Police stood by and kept
the peace while the property was
moved away. It was then discover
that the angry roommate, a 34 year old
local male under the influence of alcohol, was the same person soliciting
hugs earlier in the day. No charges
are pending but he was advised that he
would be arrested for public intoxica-
tions if he left his home again in that
condition.
On Saturday January 10 at
approximately 10 p.m. staff at a
local bar in the 400 block Vernon St
called NPD to report a male threatening them. Employees asked the 36
year old local male to leave the property for drinking and he responded
by threatening to kill them. He was
arrested by NPD members without
incident. He is known to police for
engaging in this type of behavior
after abusing alcohol. He was held
until sober and will have to answer to
charges of uttering threats and public
intoxication.
On Monday, Jan. 12, the Nelson
Police Department received a call
for service from a local business that
received a telephone call from a person claiming to be employed by a
local hydro company. The person
stated that the business’ power was
going to be disconnected in 30 minutes unless the business owner purchased money cards and followed the
instructions provided.
The Nelson Police Department
wants to take this opportunity to warn
residents and businesses of scams,
and to advise that if you receive a
call similar to this, do not provide any
personal or account information. In
addition, to check the validity of the
request by hanging up and calling the
local hydro company mentioned to
ensure there is some credence to the
call. If you are still not satisfied that
the call is valid, please call the Nelson
Police Department at (250) 354-3919
or PhoneBusters at 1-888-495-8501.

Nelson resident to serve jail time for not paying income tax
On Tuesday, Jan. 6, a Nelson
resident was sentenced in Nelson
Provincial Court, after pleading guilty
to failing to comply with a court
order to file his 2005 to 2009 personal income tax returns. Randell was
ordered to serve a 30-day interim jail
sentence and fined $1,000, payable
by January 5, 2017. The outstanding
returns have since been filed.
The preceding information was
obtained from the court records.
When taxpayers are convicted of
failing to file tax returns, in addition to
any fines imposed by the courts, they
must still file the returns and pay the
full amount of taxes owing, plus interest owed, as well as any civil penalties
that may be assessed by the CRA.
If you have ever made a tax mistake or omission, the CRA is offering
you a second chance to make things
right through its Voluntary Disclosures
Program (VDP). If you make a valid
disclosure before you become aware
that the CRA is taking action against
you, you may only have to pay the
taxes owing plus interest. More information on the VDP can be found on
the CRA’s website at

Policy and Guidelines
Traveling (And Why or Why Not)
Traveling
has never been
something I’ve
thought about that much.
As a kid, my family and
I took a few trips to the
United States. Other then
that I haven’t really left
the country and I don’t see
myself doing so for some
time to come.
Travelling
however
is something everyone
should do at least a few
times. By doing it you
garner perspective on the
world at large, it gives you
an insight on what exists
on other parts of the earth
as well as gives you an
insight to what the living
conditions of others are
like. I highly implore you
to explore while you are
young, it gets more and
more difficult as you get
older.
Travelling is a good
thing. I just have a tendency to be lazy and complacent but don’t let that get
in the way of seeing the
world especially now that
we are in for a frigid winter. See what you can and
enjoy it while you can still
get a chance. Free time is
a luxury we lose out on as
we get older, use it while
you can.

Guest Editorial: Violence, not religion is the problem
by Robin Murray
In the wake of the tragedies in
Paris, I’m seeing more and more John
Lennon quotes of “Imagine no religion.” Honestly, I spend a great deal
of time imagining a world in which
there is no need for religion. Imagine
a world so just and fair, that there is
no need for people to have to band
together and struggle to make sure
everyone is fed, sheltered and loved!
Imagine a world where people don’t
have to try and make sense of suffering, hurt and grief because there is no
suffering or loss! Imagine a world
where unions are obsolete because
everyone is treated fairly, including
those unions, sometimes called “religion”, where people come together
around their values, rather than their
employment.
This is, unfortunately, not our
current reality. But to blame religion, in general, for the killings in
Paris and many other horrible acts
of violence committed historically,
is like condemning sex because
there are now and always have been
rapists in the world. At their core,
Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Wicca,
Buddhism, Judaism, Animism, and
other religions address basic human
desires for ritual, camaraderie, and
celebration of wonder and awe. The
problem arises when individuals or
groups of practitioners of these faiths
start trying to impose their ways on
others through violence and coercion.
No one has a monopoly on Truth – not
you, not me. Imagine a world where
everyone can accept that!
