On Friday September 23rd, your Pearland Oilers went against the Alief Elsik Rams and won 37-9.
The Oilers put on a good show for Oiler Nation. The crowd was getting loud, not only by the team,
but by spectators in the stands who were hyping up the fans.
In the opening quarter, the Rams attempted a field goal, but Justin Guy Robinson blocked it and
recovered the ball. Later, Blake Parish sacks the quarterback of the Rams. Elsik ends up making a
field goal and the quarter ends 0-3 Elsik.
For the second quarter after kicking off to Elsik deep in their own territory, Pearland gains 2 points
after the quarterback for Elsik fails to catch the snap and the ball goes back in the end zone for a
safety. Quarterback Jacob Whitehead runs for a touchdown for the Oilers, and the team attempted a
2 point conversion, but was not successful. Mitchell Johnson recovers the ball after the Rams
fumbled it and runs towards the end zone making a touchdown for the Oilers. A field goal was made
later on and the first half ends 18-3 Pearland.
Coming back for the second half the Rams made another safety. Triston Gibson scores a touchdown
and the third quarter ends 27-3, Pearland.
During the final quarter the Oilers made another field goal, Debione Renfro catches an interception,
and Auston Deason sacks Elsik’s quarterback. Jacob Whitehead scores another Pearland Oiler
touchdown. The game ends with a score of Pearland 37, Elsik 9.

Pasadena Memorial 37-20
Friday September 16th, the Pearland Oilers went against the Pasadena Memorial Mavericks at
Veterans Memorial Stadium and exited victoriously with a 37-20 win.
The first touchdown the Oilers made in the game was made by Debione Renfro during the first
quarter after Pasadena made a field goal scoring 3 points. Later in the quarter Pasadena fumbled
the ball and was recovered by Eric Singleton for the Oilers. Deeper into the first quarter Twiston
Gibson scores a touchdown. The quarter ends 14-3 Pearland in the lead.
In the second quarter, Pasadena fell to a safety which gave Pearland 2 points. In one play during an
Oiler’s drive, number 19 on the Mavericks attempted to tackle Evan Burgess, but Burgess stood tall
and shook off the hit. Jaelin Benefield came up with a touchdown, and Derek Parish sacks the
quarterback on the Mavericks team. The first half ends at 23-6 Pearland.
Coming back for the second half, Jaelin Benefield make another touchdown for the Oilers. The third
quarter ending at 30-13 Pearland still winning.
For the fourth quarter, Benefield had got injured during one of the plays and sat out for the rest of
the game, sadly. After Pasadena scored a touchdown half way in the quarter, they went for the extra
point, but Gage McDonald blocked the kick. Later into the 4th Stone Croasdaile made an amazing
play gaining a good amount of yards leading to another Oiler touchdown. The game ends with
Pearland victorious at 37-20.

Pearland Oilers head football coach Tony Heath reminisced about Whittaker with
Pearlandsports.com.
“He’s a jokester. He’ll surprise you,” recalled a smiling Heath. But there was always a mature,
respectful and humble part of Fozzy that made him a special person, “He lost his father at a really
young age. His mother raised him along with his other two brothers.
Miss Gloria raised them to be fine young men. You can’t say a bad thing about Fozzy,” said Heath.

Morstead, the punter for the 2009 New Orleans Saints Super Bowl squad.
“I know for a fact Pearland High School has put four players in the Super Bowl,” Heath proudly
adds.

And out went the Manvel Mavericks 27-24 as the Pearland Oilers scored 17 second half points to
clinch the 22-6A district crown 27-24 in a win for the ages in Oilers football lore.
Senior kicker Cody Bernstein gave the Oilers a good feeling heading into the locker room as he
ended the first half with a 29 yard field goal to bring Pearland within seven, 17-10.
In the second half, the Oilers defense took over as Zane Gonzales, Dylan Roach, Dean Taylor, Emylie
Jones, Kordell Caldwell, Blake Parish, and the rest of the riggers made the stops when they needed it
most.

Manvel quarterback D’Eriq King nearly did it all by himself, going
16-25, 146 yards and one touchdown pass. King added 125 yards rushing with another score. But,
the Oilers defense came up huge with a goal line stand late in the 4th quarter.
With the game tied 24-24, the Mavs had first and goal at Pearland’s two yard line with 3:23 to play.
The next four plays were the turning point.
1st down: King’s pass knocked down at line by junior defensive lineman Jordan Crawford.
2nd down: Crawford, senior defensive back Andrew Landry and senior linebacker Dylan Roach gang
tackle D’Vaughn Pennamon for no gain.
3rd down: Roach and senior Daymon Driggs drag down King on a sweep to the left side.
4th down: Ignoring a field goal attempt, the Mavs go for it. Oilers junior cornerback Blake Parish
delivers tremendous hit on D’Vaughn Pennamon, forcing the Mavs running back to fumble out of end
zone for an Oilers touchback.
With a little over two minutes to play, Pearland quarterback Connor Blumrick marched the team into
field goal range with 17 seconds left.

Both teams waited anxiously in the dark for about 15 minutes before power was slowly restored.

With the Friday night lights up, the spotlight shown brightest on Oilers senior kicker Cody Bernstein
as he set up for a 38 yard field goal. Fittingly as he had ended the first half, the steady Bernstein was
true as time expired and the jubilant Oilers stormed the field with a 27-24 victory.
The Oilers will host Beaumont West Brook Friday at 7:00pm in a
bi-district playoff match-up.

The Dawson Eagles beat the rain and the South Houston Trojans Friday night 56-7 at The Rig.
Before the deluge fell from the skies, Dawson’s damage was done mostly because of their ground
game. Senior Saevion Johnson carried the rock 19 times for 229 yards and four touchdowns. On the
year Johnson ran for 1,386 yards and 17 scores.

As a team, the Eagles totaled a dominate 622 yards rushing. Quarterback Zach Smith ran for a
touchdown and threw for two.

A touching moment came on Dawson’s final scoring drive when senior running back Pete Alba
weaved his way through the Trojans defense for a breathtaking 48 yard romp to the end zone. Alba,
a transfer from Pearland who missed seven games, scored his first touchdown as an Eagle on just
the eighth carry of his shortened season. He broke down in tears as teammates and coaches hugged
him and patted him on the helmet.

It wasn’t pretty, but it was pretty darned exciting.
Both Pearland and Dawson combined for 26 penalties, many for unsportsmanlike conduct and late
hits, but still managed to thrill the sellout crowd at The Rig Friday night with the Oilers prevailing in
overtime 28-27.
The kicking game proved to be the crucial factor in the outcome. Pearland’s Cody Bernstein was 2-3
in the field goal department, hitting the cross bar on his first attempt, but nailing two crucial field
goals from 35 and 37 yards. The latter drew the Oilers within a point at 14-13 with 8:26 left in the
final quarter.
Dawson answered that kick with what appeared to be the turning point in the game when running
back Saevion Johnson busted a 46 yard touchdown run to boost the Eagles to a 21-13 lead with 6:09
left to play.

The Oilers would get one last shot with 2:08 left in this heavyweight brawl. Quarterback Connor
Blumrick rolled to his left to avoid the rush, squared up and found a wide open Brady Basso for a 41
yard touchdown pass with 1:20 left. Blumrick followed that with the crucial two point conversion
hooking up with Chase Foster for the game tying try and a 21-21 tie forcing overtime.
The Oilers got the ball first and Blumrick was sacked on a heavy pass rush from Eagles defensive
end Jordan Rodriguez. On the next play from the 33, Blumrick dropped back and heaved a pass in
triple coverage where receiver Jonathan White made an amazing catch in the middle of three Eagles
to come down with the ball inside the Dawson five yard line. On the next play, eluding would be
tacklers again, Blumrick tossed to a wide open Cody Williams for six. Bernstein added the extra
point to make it 28-21 Pearland.

Dawson answered when Johnson, who rushed 32 times for 179 yards, scored his second touchdown
of the game from 12 yards out to make it 28-27. Marek Biczynski came in for the extra point, but it
strayed right and clanked off the upright.
As the Pearland players stormed the field to celebrate their stunning 28-27 victory, a dejected
Biczynski was consoled by his teammates and coaches.

showed a lot of class and strength on his part.

progressing just fine.
The Oilers shutout the Pasadena Eagles Saturday at Veteran’s Stadium 64-0. The defense allowed
just 69 yards of offense and three first downs. The outnumbered Eagles most exciting play came on a
fumble recovery with the game already out of hand.
