if you are expecting an emergency call.
 ALL are welcome to this time and place of worship.
Know that in this space you are welcome as you are, for who you are.
Together we celebrate all of God’s children – young, old and in-between;
male, female and in-between; gay, lesbian, straight and in-between;
the assured, the doubting, and the in-between;
the optimistic, the cynics, and the in-between;
the foolish, the wise, and the in-between.

CALL TO COMMUNITY
I Am Amazing

Brandon Mowry, vocal leader
*THE CALL TO WORSHIP
One:
Power is…
Many:
the ability to enact change.
One:
Power can be…
Many:
a force for liberation.
One:
Power gives…
Many:
a voice to the voiceless.
Leader:
Power needs…
Many:
to be examined, challenged, and critiqued.
One:
Power comes…
Many:
from a powerful God.
One:
Let us come together in the power of worship.
*OPENING HYMN
O Holy God, Whose Gracious Power
-4-
Krister Martinez, leader
*OPENING PRAYER
ALL:
Great God of heaven and earth, we are often aware of your power. It
comes to us in the booming voice of thunder, in majestic views of
mountains and ocean, in the colors of a ladybug, in a child’s cry, and
in times of stillness and quiet. In all these things and much, much
more, we are reminded of your greatness. In this time of worship may
we appreciate and celebrate your power, and may we always seek
ways to use our own power for peace and goodness. We pray this with
the prayer Jesus taught us…
THE LORD’S PRAYER (spoken)
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE
One:
God makes peace within us.
Many:
Let us claim it.
One:
God makes peace between us.
Many:
Let us share it.
One:
Let us greet another as a sign of God's peace.
Many:
The peace of Christ be with you.
One:
And also with you.
You are invited to share the peace or words of welcome around you.
All children are invited forward at this time for the Children’s Message.
This morning all children kindergarten age and older will remain in worship.
Childcare for infants through pre-school is available in the nursery.
MUSICAL INTERLUDE

CONTEMPORARY LESSON
Marianne Williamson
Sara Zamora-Grant, reader
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won't feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of
God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

I am a promise
I am a possibility

I am a promise to be anything God wants me to be.
I can go anywhere that He wants me to go
I can be anything He wants me to be
I can climb the high mountains
I can cross the wide sea
I’m a great big promise you see!

One:
Go from this place in peace and joy to serve God.
Many:
We rejoice in the good news we have heard and go to serve God in all
that we do.
One:
May God's power continue in and through you to others.
Many:
May God's love also pour into your heart this day and always. Amen
*POSTLUDE
During the postlude you are invited to come forward to the piano and enjoy the music.
Following worship, please join us in the Fellowship Hall for some cake and coffee.
Visitors, we would LOVE to have you join us.
We also invite you to the Welcome Table in the Fellowship Hall. Join us for a cup of
coffee, a welcome gift, and the opportunity to hear more about the church.
A WARM AND CORDIAL WELCOME TO ALL GUESTS!
If you are visiting us today, we welcome you. We are grateful we have found each other.
And, if somehow, there is something in you, some still small voice seeking a place to live
out your faith, to ask important questions, and to serve beyond yourself, we invite you
into our community. For more information about the church, please contact Pastor Laurie
at 305.448.7421, ext. 116 or [email protected].
IN OUR PRAYERS…
We remember all those places of war, violence and unrest, as we continue to pray for
peace for all people around the world. We are especially mindful in these days of the gun
violence both in this community and around our nation. A lighted candle on the altar
symbolizes our prayers for peace and non-violence.
THANKS TO OUR USHERS TODAY:
Arnold Elguezabal, head usher; Linda and Harold Bunton, and Debbie Albion.
STAY IN TOUCH
Once a week or so, Pastor Laurie e-mails a pastoral letter, Laurie’s Lines, to all
members and friends, filling them in on the week’s events, any special concerns that
have arisen, and general church business. If you would like to be included, contact
Ron Morgan at [email protected].

SUNDAY MORNING ADULT STUDY
Church By Another Way
Sundays through May 29
9:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m. in Havighorst Lounge
Led by Pastor Laurie
While every generation experiences change, sometimes you just sense you are in the
midst of truly radical change, the kind of change that happens only every few centuries. It
seems that way for the “church” of today. Statistics show that those Americans who are
“churchless,” meaning they have no church affiliation, will soon eclipse the “churched.”
To say the least, there is a changing geography of the church and the face of religion and
the question emerges, can the church be saved? Before the grave is dug and the burial
shroud placed upon the church, let’s talk!
SPANISH-LANGUAGE SERVICES
The Second and Fourth Sundays at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel
If you are part of a Spanish-speaking family, come and join us for a worship service
bridging the Latin experience with a progressive theology. Coffee is served.

STRUGGLES FOR LIBERATION:
INJUSTICE FROM FERGUSON TO PALESTINE
Friday, June 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel
The nationally known civil rights and liberation organization Dream Defenders will
present on their recent trip to Palestine. They will describe the similarities of life under
the West Bank occupation to the situations of other oppressed peoples. Connecting
international struggles for justice is one passion of this group, which was formed to
protest the murder of Trayvon Martin. Dream Defenders has grown into a nationally
recognized group fighting for peace and justice, especially for the oppressed in poor,
minority communities in the United States. All are welcome to attend.
CALLING ALL FUN AND ADVENTUROUS PEOPLE

At the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale

acclaimed IMAX movie “National Parks Adventure 3D.” This experience takes

Captured with IMAX® 3D cameras and shown in full glory on the world’s largest
screens, National Parks Adventure celebrates the majesty of these treasured landscapes.
Join world-class mountaineer Conrad Anker, adventure photographer Max Lowe, and
climber Rachel Pohl as they bike, hike, and climb across America’s most pristine parks,
revealing a tapestry of natural wonders that will inspire the adventurer in us all.
Following the movie, we will take a short stroll through Esplanade Park and grab lunch at
The Chimney House, a Latin American Grill and Café located steps from the IMAX
theatre. The cost will be $30 for the IMAX movie and lunch. To register, call or e-mail

2016 Summer Concert Series opens June 9 with
Doc Severinsen in “Trumpet Kings,” joined by the
sensational Byron Stripling Quartet. June 23 brings Sybarite5, the incredible

THE ELEPHANT RETURNS!
Elephant in the Pew
June 19, 26, and July 3
Has there ever been something you wanted to know about your faith, but were afraid to
ask? Well, this is your chance to ask tough questions about the Bible, church, ethics, or
life and get an honest and personal answer back
from Pastor Laurie. Maybe it’s a topic or issue
that we tend to sweep under the rug or ignore in
order to keep the peace, avoid disagreement, or
maybe even change… kind of like that
proverbial elephant in the room or, in this case,
in the Pew. E-mail, write, or call Pastor Laurie,
or go to the Gables UCC Facebook page and
leave your question. She just might preach on it!
