1. Prepare
Prior to taking your first backup, it is important to ensure your system is in a healthy state. Backing up
unhealthy systems may jeopardize your ability to restore. As such, it is recommended that a check disk, virus
scan, and defrag are performed before taking your first system backup. To ensure reliability of backups, it is
also important that all other backup software be disabled or uninstalled.
2. Connect
Now that your Datto device is connected to the network and booted, you need to connect to the SIRIS
interface to start registration. Connect to the interface via one of the following two methods:
A. Find the SIRIS 2’s local IP address by typing, US: device.dattobackup.com /
CA: device.dattobackup.ca, in the browser* of any machine connected to the same network as the
SIRIS 2. If there is no other Datto device on the local network, you will be automatically redirected to
the SIRIS 2 interface.
* Mozilla Firefox is the recommended browser for utilizing Datto’s various web-based portals. Other browsers such as Internet Explorer,
Chrome, and Safari are viable options, but may not provide the best experience possible.
NOTE:If there is another Datto device on the local network, a list of devices will be displayed. The
default name for a new SIRIS 2 device will be “siris2device”.
B. You can also plug a monitor, mouse and keyboard into the SIRIS 2. This will allow you to interact
with the device directly.
3. Register
Now that you are connected to your SIRIS 2 interface, it is time to register the appliance. After connecting
to the device, the Welcome to SIRIS 2 page will be displayed.
Fill out the necessary fields and click
.
NOTE:Please ensure that TCP Ports 22 (SSH), 80 (HTTP), & 443 (HTTPS) are open outbound to
US: dattobackup.com / CA: datttobackup.ca without a proxy for registration to process
successfully.
TIP:If any of these ports are blocked it will display as such on the Networking page, which can be
found under the Configure tab. For more information on Network Settings, head to page 20.

4. Download & Install
After registering your appliance, it’s time to add an Agent and start taking backups.
Click the Protect tab to pull up the Protect a new system page.
To protect a machine on your SIRIS 2, you need to download the ShadowSnap™ Agent on the target
machine (the system that you are going to backup). This can be done by either of two methods:
A.If you are accessing the SIRIS 2 interface via the target machine, you can download the
ShadowSnap Agent directly from the SIRIS 2 interface by clicking
.
B.You can also download the most recent version of ShadowSnap directly from shadowsnap.com.
After downloading the .EXE file, follow the ShadowSnap install wizard steps and instructions.
Before installing ShadowSnap, ensure that the target machine has access to an Internet connection and
that the following prerequisites are met:
• Ports 139 and 25566 are open for local area network connections. Port 3260 is required for
target machines that will be encrypted on the SIRIS 2.
• Ensure proper health of volumes to be protected by running Disk Defrag and chkdsk/r.
• Remove all other backup software from the target machine to ensure no VSS conflicts occur
• Volume Shadow Copy service is running, but the status is “Stopped”.
For a full list of ShadowSnap prerequisites, please refer to the ShadowSnap Prerequisites page of the
Datto Academy at academy.dattobackup.com/ss-require
For a full list of ShandowSnap Encryption requirements, please refer to the Using ShadowSnap
Encryption page of the Datto Academy at academy.dattobackup.com/sse-require
NOTE:Installing the ShadowSnap Agent will require a reboot of the target machine to complete.

5. Configure
Return to the SIRIS 2 interface, and enter an email address to receive critical error alerts, such as backup or
screenshot verification failures.
NOTE:Further device-level alerts can be set in the Datto Partner Portal. Agent-level alerts can be set
on the Configure Agent Settings page of each agent.
6. Encrypt (Optional)
Datto SIRIS 2 devices are capable of
providing AES-256 encryption for data
associated with the Agents protected
by the device. Secured by a userdefined passphrase, agent data will
be completely inaccessible without
that passphrase being applied. To
encrypt an agent’s data, simply add
the passphrase of your choice twice in
fields provided.
For full details on Encryption, please
see the Datto Agent Encryption FAQ
in the Product Info section of the Datto
Partner Portal .
The Datto Academy On:
NOTE:Performing certain operations will
require the agent’s passphrase. DO
NOT LOSE your passphrase, as Datto
will be incapable of recovering it for
you.
Tips for Protecting
ShadowSnap Agents
These Tips ensure that the setup configuration
does not depend on the local domain. This can be
beneficial during a disaster recovery whereas the
local domain could potentially be non-functional.
7. Add
Enter the IP address (recommended) or hostname of
the system you want to protect. The
button
will turn green when the interface detects a valid IP
that is associated with your SIRIS 2 Agent.

The most secure way to protect a system is
by using it’s Static IP Address.
For machines with dynamic IP addresses
please use the fully qualified domain name
(FQDN).
It is never suggested to protect an
Agent by using it’s local hostname - such
dependencies on local DNS can impede a
disaster recovery.

RoundTrip Best Practices
Datto RoundTrips are often necessary to push
the first backup of a new device, troubleshoot
synchronization issues, or allow a device to catch up
in case off-site backups fall out of sync from the local
device.
This being said, RoundTrip drives are the last step
in the Business Continuity process and should
only be used as a last resort to alleviate off‑site
synchronization issues.
Ac
This page will allow you to perform a RoundTrip sync, which
is a complimentary Datto service that allows you to get large
volumes of data off-site quickly.

of data that you have stored locally and in the cloud. This is
helpful to update the statistics on this page after you delete
a recovery point.
Perform a RoundTrip Sync
adem
y
Before ordering a RoundTrip, it is important to note
how the production machine is running locally. If the
information that is being backed up in a 24 hour
period is more than the bandwidth at the end user
site can handle, then a RoundTrip will not be useful
as there is an infrastructure issue at the end-user site.
If the Datto device is backing up efficiently, in most
cases the device will sync off‑site without the use of
a RoundTrip.
Datto recommends that you monitor your backups
for two weeks to ensure that everything is running
efficaciously and then, if necessary, use a RoundTrip
to catch up off‑site.
For more in-depth information on RoundTrips go to:
To start a RoundTrip Sync, connect a Datto RoundTrip, or a
personal HDD drive (250GB+), to the SIRIS 2 device via one
of the available USB 3.0 ports on the device.

Click
, select the appropriate drive, and follow the on-screen instructions to sync the
local data to the drive. Further details on the RoundTrip process can be found in the RoundTrip User Guide
that is included with every Datto RoundTrip. It can also be downloaded from the User Guides section of the
Datto Partner Portal.
After syncing local data to the RoundTrip drive, promptly ship it to the Datto RoundTrip department.

Network Options
The network adapters option provides different networking modes for the VM.
Disconnected: By default, a virtual machine is configured for the network adapters to be disconnected. This
allows for the Virtual Machines to boot without causing any conflicts with the production instance of the
machine on the local network.
Bridged to the Primary NIC: Bridging the Virtual Machine to eth0 (Primary) NIC of the Datto SIRIS 2
provides the Virtual Machine with live connectivity using the primary NIC of the Datto SIRIS 2.
This allows for setting up routing or bridging between the VM and the rest of the network.
TIP:When bridging a VM’s network adapter to the primary NIC, do not give it the same IP address
as the Datto SIRIS 2 as this will result in an IP Conflict.
Bridged to eth1: Bridging the Virtual Machine to eth1 (Secondary) NIC of the Datto SIRIS 2 provides the
Virtual Machine with live connectivity using the secondary NIC of the Datto SIRIS 2.
NOTE:More Ethernet port options may be available depending on your SIRIS 2 model
Firewalled on a private subnet: This option configures the Virtual Machine for NAT (Network Address
Translation) mode which creates an isolated virtual network with Internet access for the VM on the Datto
SIRIS 2.
NOTE:VMs that have Network Adapters set to be firewalled on a private subnet will have the IP
Address 10.0.2.15. This will allow the VM to have outbound access without conflicting with
the production systems.
Firewalled on a private subnet, with no Internet access: This option configures the Virtual Machine for
NAT (Network Address Translation) mode which creates an isolated virtual network without Internet
access for the VM on the Datto SIRIS 2.
TIP:The VM will boot up with a 169 address by default as it will not be able to reach any DHCP
server. Statically assign an IP address & subnet to configure two or more VMs hosted on the
Datto SIRIS 2 to communicate with each other.

DNS Servers
Configures DNS information for the Datto device. In a domain environment, you may enter in the FQDN
for DNS Search Domain so that the Datto can protect machines by their host names in the event that they
have dynamic IP addresses.
TIP:It’s a good idea provide at least one remote DNS server (e.g. Google’s 8.8.8.8). In the event
that a disaster occurs to the local DNS Server the Datto SIRIS 2 will be able to use the remote
DNS Server to resolve dattobackup.com so that it may be accessed remotely to Virtualize the
local DNS Server (if protected).
Hostname
This field allows you to set the hostname of the Datto SIRIS 2 device.
TIP:As hostnames appear in the Datto Partner Portal’s Device List, you may find it useful to name
your devices with a naming convention that helps identify the customer, company, and/or
network that it is protecting.
Windows Networking - Workgroup Mode
This field is where the Datto SIRIS 2 can be joined to a domain.
TIP:Datto suggests to leave the SIRIS 2 devices in workgroup mode. This is so that the device is
not dependent on anything with the local domain during disasters.
NOTE:The option to join a SIRIS 2 device to a local domain is provided specifically for deployments
where the NAS feature with domain authentication credentials will be used.
NTP Servers
This is where NTP Server(s) can be configured. Default value of ntp.dattobackup.com is sufficient in almost
all scenarios. ntp.dattobackup.com is synced with pool.ntp.org.
TIP:Changing the NTP Server may be useful in deployments where the local domain’s time is askew
by five minutes or more as a result of not being synchronized with a remote NTP Server.
VNC
This allows you to change the VNC password for the Datto device. The default password for Datto SIRIS 2
devices is: Northern
SNMP

Off-Site Synchronization
This page allows you to customize a wide variety of options regarding your off-site backups and how they
are synced with Datto’s Cloud.
Off-Site Sync Speed Limit
Controls the default speed that your SIRIS 2 device can send data off-site.
TIP: Clicking
will automatically set your default
speed limit to 50% of the bandwidth detected by the
device.
NOTE:Your device will utilize as much bandwidth that it is provided. Allocating excessive bandwidth
can potentially affect the speed of your local network.
Off-Site Sync Scheduling
You may use the check boxes, pull-downs and fields to set a granular schedule to throttle the amount of
bandwidth that the SIRIS 2 will utilize at specific times during the week. Without a schedule in place, your
device will constantly backup using your default speed limit.
TIP:Typically, users will throttle transfer speeds during business hours, so data can stay synced
without affecting bandwidth speeds during regular operations.
NOTE:The Ideal Case Daily Sync Transfer Amount will be adjusted according to your bandwidth
speed limit and your bandwidth schedule.
Pause Off-Site Sync
Pause your off-site backups for a specified period of time, or indefinitely, if so desired.
Concurrent Off-Site Sync
Choose how many Agents you would like to transfer off-site simultaneously. Syncing more Agents at once
can streamline bandwidth consumption, but may result in individual Agents syncing slower.

Configure
Device Settings
Utilize this page to configure backup settings that will affect all of the Agents associated with this device.
Concurrent Backup Settings
Here you can choose the maximum amount of concurrent backups that will be sent off-site at a given time.
Schedule Offset
Backup schedules for all Agents can be off-set up to 55 minutes in the event the backups conflict with other
scheduled tasks on the protected systems.
For example: If two backups are being sent off-site at the top of the hour, (i.e. 1:00PM, 2:00PM) a
15 minutes backup offset will cause backups to be sent off-site every hour, but with 15
minutes in between (i.e. 1:00PM & 1:15PM, 2:00PM & 2:15PM, etc).
Advanced Alerting
This feature is designed to streamline alerting by preventing repeat email notifications if the same error
occurs multiple times in one day for a given Agent. A daily digest email is sent at the end of each day,
detailing all alerts generated in the past 24 hours. Turning on Advanced Alerting also enables a new Alert
Report in the SIRIS interface which gives a complete historical view of all alerts generated, broken down
agent-by-agent.
Disable Screenshots
This prevents the local device from performing any screenshot verifications on recovery points across all
Agents.
Custom Email Alerts
Using the variables provided, you have to the ability to create custom subject lines for your alerts emails.
Simply add in your desired language and text variable(s) into the text string in the fields provided and
click
.
Customize
You can change the background of your SIRIS 2 interface using the stock images provided, or upload your
own custom images to your device and click .
TIP:For best results, upload images with an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Backup Report
The Backup Report displays a historical record of various activities for your device.
Broken down by Agent, you can view the amount of times and the success rate for the following backup
operations within a specified time frame.
• Screenshots (% Successful)
• Forced Backups (% Successful)
• Scheduled Backups. (% Successful)
NOTE:The time-frame can be adjusted using the pulldown menu at the top right.
Using
, you can generate the list of occurrences for a particular Agent activity. You may also download
this list as a .csv file for your own records using
.
You can review the latest screenshot and last successful backup for this agent, as well.
Alert Report
The Alert Report shows full details for all of the alerts that have occurred for the Agents on your device.
Total: The total amount of times this particular alert has occurred on the device.
Last 24 Hours: The total amount of time this particular alert has occurred in the last 24 hours.
NOTE:This report is only available if Advanced Alerting is enabled on the Device Settings page.

Continuity Audit
The continuity audit is a more comprehensive way of looking at all of your backups and screenshots.
For each Agent’s recovery point, the Continuity Audit shows
• Whether that recovery point is local, in the cloud, or both
• Whether or not there is a screenshot taken for that point, or whether a screenshot is queued
• The local and cloud retention settings on the device as they looked when the backup was taken.
The Continuity Audit allows you to set a custom date range for which recovery points are displayed.
The Export to CSV feature outputs all backups in the specified time period into a single speadsheet file.
