One of our best opportunities to increase Or Shalom’s revenue is
through TD Bank. The bank has a program which pays Or Shalom a
percentage of the total balances of the accounts that are enrolled in
the program and affiliated with Or Shalom. If you already have an
account at TD Bank, you can easily enroll your account in the Affinity
Program by calling Jeff Salvo, the TD Bank branch manager in Devon.
Jeff’s phone number is 610-254-9150.
Remember, any member, relative of a member, or friend of a
member can open a savings or checking account then enroll the
account in the Affinity Program, providing them with Or Shalom’s
name and address. Please note that all your bank account information
is held in strict confidence by TD Bank. Or Shalom is not told anyone’s
account balances and we are not told who is enrolled in the program.
The only information we receive from TD Bank is the total number of
accounts enrolled and the total account balances.
Over the past four years, TD Bank has donated just under
$21,000!
Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in
Chester County, Montgomery
County and Delaware County?
Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances who live in Chester
County, Montgomery County and Delaware County who are not
already members of a synagogue? If you do, why not invite them to
one of the upcoming events at Or Shalom, for example our next
Friday night dinner? They may have a good time and decide to come
back. They may have such a good time that they decide to become
members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish
Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county.
We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who they are. You can
help.
Todah rabah!
Celebrate with an Oneg
Or Shalom Sisterhood is delighted to announce that you
can sponsor an Oneg for any celebration you wish! Friday

happy to purchase it and set it up, we only want you to join
us and celebrate! Call Julie Miller at

What’s New for 2015-2016
Shalom!
I hope that you’ve all had a wonderful summer. Fall and a
new school year are upon us, and with that, some new and
exciting things at Or Shalom.
This year we are excited to welcome some new families to
Or Shalom and to our religious school. Let’s make everyone
feel welcome!
We are also thrilled to be partnering with Congregation Beth
El Ner Tamid for a post-bar/bat mitvah “Hebrew High”
school, which will meet on Sunday mornings. Classes and
activities will be on an alternating schedule between CBENT
and Or Shalom. If your child is High School age, we encourage you to consider this new joint venture.
Also on the topic of collaboration, we are teaming up with
Kesher Israel to form a Shabbat choir! The choir will perform at six Friday evening services during the year, three at
Kesher and three at Or Shalom. If you’re interested in
participating, please let us know.
We will also be exploring some joint opportunities with
Temple Brith Achim and Congregation B’Nai Jacob.
If you’re noticing a theme here, it’s not an accident. The
Jewish community in Chester County is spread out over a
wide geographic area, so we’re looking at more and more
ways to try to connect and collaborate with other synagogues
in the area.
We’re looking forward to a wonderful year!

Mitzvah of the Month
Rabbi Jacob Rosner
Throughout the year the festivals of the Jewish calendar appeal to our different senses. Passover, for
example, with its symbolic food and elaborate seder meals appeal to our sense of taste. During
Succoth, when we grasp the lulav and etrog and spend time in the fragrant sukka, we celebrate the
festival with the sense of touch and smell. Hannukah touches our sense of sight when we look lovingly
upon the candles and are reminded of our people’s vision of freedom.
The holy day of Rosh Hashanah appeals most of all to our auditory senses. The ritual we remember most of all is the blowing of the shofar, preceded by the blessing of God who commands us to hear
the sound of the ram’s horn.
There is a deep connection between the spiritual themes of Rosh Hashanah and the sense of hearing
and being heard. Rosh Hashanah, is a day of reconciliation. It is a day when we reconnect with God
and with one another. The beginning of reconciliation is the ability to listen and to hear.
I’m often asked on the subject of prayer, “Why do we need to gather together in the Synagogue?
Doesn’t God hear our prayers wherever we may be? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to pray
surrounded by nature; by a bubbling brook or beautiful sunset?
One of the answers to this question is that people who ask it have an incomplete vision of Jewish
prayer. Indeed it is true that God hears our sincere prayers wherever they are uttered. The Torah for
Rosh Hashanah teaches that God hears the plaintive cry of the boy Ishamel dying of thirst in the wilderness – “Basher hu sham – where he was” and that God heeded that prayer.
But Jewish prayer is not a monologue. Central in Jewish prayer is a ability to listen, to hear what
God has to say to us. It is no accident that the most well known prayer in our liturgy begins with the
words “Hear O Israel.” The Shema recited by traditional Jews twice daily does not conform to most
definitions of prayers. When we recite the Shema, we neither ask anything of God, or thank God, or
praise God. Instead we hear God’s instructions to us, to love God with all our heart and soul, to teach
words of Torah to our children, to put a mezzuzah on our door post and to put tefillin on our arm and
head.
To begin reconciliation with God then, we must regain the ability not only to pray but to listen.
Rosh Hashanah also begins a season of reconciliation with one another. We all recognize that
distance from loved ones begins with our failure to communicate and to truly listen. Engrossed in ourselves, we fail to hear the urgent voice of our spouse, our children or our close friends. We come home
from a hard day of work, but are we truly there? Do we listen when our children present us with their
problems? Do we truly hear our spouse and his/her needs?
The shofar on Rosh Hashanah is a call not only to prayer and to Teshuvah, but a call to each of us
to learn how to listen. To listen to God’s plan for us in the universe. To hear how God truly loves us.
To listen to our loved ones and to be truly there when they need us and to listen to the heartfelt cries of
those less fortunate than ourselves.
May this year’s shofar try and inspire us to listen: to God and to each other, so that we may truly
be reconciled during this season of Holy Days.
I wish you a Happy New Year, a year of Blessing, Health and Nachas from children and grandchildren and a year of learning how to truly listen.
Rabbi Jacob

From the Education Director
Na’ama Yarden
Creating a community at Or Shalom- Some ideas to think about
What is a synagogue, if not a community for its members? When a group of people come together and
create a meaningful bind for either religious, social-emotional, cultural or any other reason - we call it
a community.
What does it mean to be a community in 2015? How can we at Or Shalom, find new ways to strengthen
the ties between our members and make them relevant to our needs and wills? We also know that in
order to feel part of a community, one should get involved and contribute to it. What does each one of
us can/will/want to do for the community, so he/she will feel part of it? In today’s world communities
are not what they were before. We need to find new ways to encourage them to become part of the
community and make it theirs. We need to be a head of the game, creative and open minded so people
will want to join us.
A successful community is one who is able to bring the people together on one hand by supporting its
members needs, and on the other hand by encouraging them to contribute to the community. This “give
- take” balance is a delicate one, but rather essential to the survival of the community and the feeling of
belonging to it. It becomes even more complex when we look at the differences between all people and
their expectations. Due to this wide spectrum of wills, the more flexible we will be - the better. Recognizing people’s own uniqueness and needs, make them feel welcomed and hopefully will lead to create
within them a desire to give back to the community. No more one size fits all. Now it is the time to
recognize each one to his/her own way. By declaring ourselves as an open mind community, who
thrived to accept the differences between our members, we will attract more new members.
Being more open to accept a variety of people does not mean to ask nothing back from the people. The
opposite is true. Each member may choose how they would contribute to the community. They will find
their own way to give back through their individual interest.
I am very proud of our Religious school that accepts each student and family according to their needs.
This year we expanded the Israeli program and we now have two classes made of 18 students (special
number+ Chai). It is a wonderful growth to our school, which in the last years grew smaller.
As the High Holidays are approaching, we can ask ourselves how can we make Or Shalom a place
where everyone feels welcomed? We should have an open door and open hearts to attract new people.
Or Shalom already has a lot of what is needed for this attitude to become known around our area: The
warm environment, the friendly people, the low-key style and more. As long as we get more people in
the door, make them feel at home and find ways to connect them to the community- we will be able to
continue thriving.

Sisterhood news
I hope you all have had a wonderful summer. Mine started with a bang, celebrating
(my youngest child) Ari's Bar Mitzvah. It was a great way to end the school year,
followed by our annual family vacation in New York. The rest of the summer was
not too exciting, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Now I'm ready to start the new (school)
year and hope you are too.
I want to thank Janet Hurwitz for hosting our summer book club in August. I
announced the book early in June, so it gave everyone plenty of time to read it before
meeting to discuss it. I will announce our winter book choice shortly.
Calling all bakers! Help is needed for our Rosh Hashana Dessert Buffet baking on
Wednesday, September 9 at 12:30. Baking skills of any level are welcome. Please
let me know if you can make it by emailing me at [email protected].
These desserts will be served after services on September 13.
Our annual Sisterhood Opening Dinner will be Tuesday, October 13 at 6:30 PM.
Mark your calendars now! Location, pricing and other information about the evening
will be out soon.
If you enjoy wrapping gifts, we have the opportunity to wrap at the King of Prussia
mall during the month of December. Many members of Sisterhood (including
myself) have been doing this for many years. If are interested, please let me know
by the end of October because that is when the schedule is made up.
This is a fundraiser for Sisterhood.
L'Shanah Tovah! I wish you and your family good health and happiness.
