new effort to secure mandatory labeling of genetically engineered food, dubbed the WOMEN IN THE
SENATE Campaign, will be celebrated during July’s 1st
Friday Art Walk, at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center. Festivities include a silent auction of work of local artists, gem carvings from Jay Boyle Co, jazz from the Dave
Leffler quartet, and fresh organic juice.
The goal of the campaign is to get all 20 women currently serving as U.S. senators to ask President Obama
to use his executive authority to “close the labeling loophole”—so mothers and others know what they are eating
and feeding their families.
Former California Congressman Jim Bates, who is
spearheading the campaign, chose WOMEN IN THE SENATE because it gives a cause and distinction to the largest

rancis Bennett spent over three decades living in Trappist and Benedictine monasteries in the US, France,
and Canada. During those years
he practiced in the Christian mystical/contemplative tradition and
worked deeply with teachers in the
Vipassana and Zen traditions.
He offered spiritual care in
parish communities and worked
with the sick and dying in hospice and hospital settings. He led
retreats, offered spiritual talks and
accompanied many on their spiritual journey.
In 2010 he experienced a profound perceptual “shift”
in which he realized the ever-present presence of pure
Awareness, which some would call the Presence of God.
About a year after this awakening, he felt it was time
for him to leave the monastery. Soon after leaving, he was
interviewed by Fairfield resident Rick Archer on his show
“Buddha at the Gas Pump” (batgap.com/francis-bennett).
People throughout the world were delighted by Francis’
sweet, unpretentious personality and clear expression of
spiritual knowledge. He began receiving a flood of correspondence and invitations to speak and lead retreats.
Francis recently published a book entitled I Am That I
Am – Discovering the Love, Peace, Joy and Stability of the
True Self. His talk promises to be an uplifting and heartwarming evening.
Admission for the talk is $10, $5 for students.

Iowa Sustainable Business Alliance Calls for
Iowa to Join the Responsibility Revolution
Saturday, June 22, 10 a.m., Sondheim Center
by Laura Tarnoff
T
he Iowa Sustainable Business Alliance
(ISBA) is a growing family of Iowa
businesses, organizations, non-profits, social enterprises, students, individuals and
more, advocating for a more sustainable
economy, which promotes social equality
and maintains a healthy, abundant planet.
Through representation, advocacy,
and community, ISBA acts as a catalyst
for change, uniting Iowans and businesses
committed to developing smart and sustainable solutions, without negative impacts on the environment. We believe Iowa
can lead the nation in transforming policy
and practice, creating incentives for investing our resources with vision and stewardship. By uniting the diverse population of
‘sustainable businesses,’ we can find a common, more powerful ground, to drive positive systemic change.
ISBA believes every business has a
stake in sustainability, meaning much
more than environmentalism. We strive to
regenerate and revitalize the economy. The
needs of our time demand new paradigms,
economic models that are innovative and
thrive over time; creating top and bottom
line financial success, while contributing
to the well being of communities and the
planet. ISBA and our members are guided
by a triple bottom line approach: people,
profit and planet, expanding the definition

original songs and stories, puppetry and
family contra (country) dances are more
fun than can be put into words. Not surprising for a caller, he also coaches performers on banjo, ukulele, jaw harp, rhythmic spoons, storytelling, contra dancing,
acting, and stagecraft.
Contra dances are a great opportunity
to have a ridiculous degree of fun, while
of success to encompass a more comprehensive range of outcomes.
ISBA works in three main areas:
(See isballiance.org for more information)
1. Public Education: ISBA believes
change begins with education. We research
and report current policy and upcoming
opportunities, educate on staying profitable while going green, and offer events
and speakers.
2. Public Policy: ISBA informs and
engages policy makers and the media on
the necessity, opportunity, and benefit of
building a more sustainable economy. ISBA
acts as a task force on issues and policies
beneficial to sustainable businesses and the
larger economy.
3. Sustainable Business Development: ISBA works to support, create and
implement solutions, strategies and innovations for the emerging age of sustainable
business.
Jeffrey Hollender, co-founder of Seventh Generation and co-chair of Greenpeace USA, will be the keynote speaker at
FAIRfest on Saturday, June 22, 10 a.m. to

sustainable business leaders. Jeffrey’s talk

Alliant Energy Recognizes Fairfield for Success
in Saving Energy–Participation in Hometown
Rewards Exceeded Goals
I
nterstate Power and Light Company, an
Alliant Energy company, is announcing
the energy savings progress of Fairfield’s
Hometown Rewards program. Since starting the program in 2012, residents have
saved more than 10.2 million kilowatthours (kWh).
One of the programs goals was to save
about 4% of the average annual energy use
among residential customers in Fairfield.
Actually, local residential customers saved
about 8.5%. Through engagement work,
commercial customers saved about 8% of
their annual energy use.
“Fairfield residents have really stepped
up to the plate and made significant changes—and now as a community we are reaping the benefits,” said Scott Timm, sustainability coordinator, City of Fairfield/Iowa
State University Extension and Outreach.
“Our work represents nearly one million
dollars in energy savings last year, and there
is still time to get involved!”
“Fairfield continues to demonstrate
how small communities can have an impact on creating a more sustainable future,” said Mayor Ed Malloy, Fairfield. “I
am proud of the efforts our citizens and
our community volunteers have made to
conserve energy and create a culture of
sustainability in our city.”
The focus of the Alliant Energy Hometown Rewards program in Fairfield was
on the energy efficiency and conservation goals outlined in the city’s strategic
Go Green Plan. Volunteers from Fairfield
developed the goals, focusing on citywide
energy-use reduction, increased participa-
tion in rebate programs for equipment upgrades, and a public awareness campaign
on energy conservation.
“Our community-based energy efficiency program, Hometown Rewards,
provides a unique opportunity for Alliant
Energy and communities to work closely
together to create a customized, grassroots
approach to saving energy,” said Jeanine
Penticoff, director of Energy Efficiency,
Economic Development, and Account
Management at Alliant Energy. “Fairfield has been an outstanding example of
a Hometown Rewards community. They
are committed, engaged and have come
up with some creative ideas to encourage
energy efficiency throughout the community. We are excited to see Fairfield doing
so well.”
In addition to the recognition for
energy savings, Iowa Governor Terry E.
Brandstad is recognizing Fairfield with an
Environmental Excellence Award for leadership and innovation in energy efficiency
for its work through the Hometown Rewards program.
The Hometown Rewards program
includes a financial reward for Fairfield
for meeting its goals. Alliant Energy is
providing an incentive of up to $18,928
towards an energy efficiency project in the
community. Those dollars will go towards
the installation of new solar panels for
the Fairfield Public Library. In addition, a
monitoring system will be installed to help
inform and educate library patrons on the
energy created at any given moment.
Fairfield’s newest gallery, ART 52,
opens this Friday, June 21 at 52 East
Briggs (opposite the courthouse),
featuring “Abstract Images” by
Tony Ellis. The opening reception/
showing will be held 6-10 p.m. as
part of FAIRFest 2013.
FAIRfest…cont. from p. 1
Our goal is for FAIRfest to become one
of the best excuses of the year to entice people to our neck of the woods. Celebrate all
things Fairfield and Iowa, Southeast Iowa
and beyond.
Invite a friend or family. Bring a lawn
chair. Grab a taco from Tacopocalypse.
A burger from the Hy-Vee grill. Maybe a
Jack’s rootbeer float. Or some funnel cake.
Take a walk in the cultural district. Shop
the town square. Hit the bike trail early.
But don’t miss the music. Party gras time
in F-Town. It’s FAIRfest 2013! (And we’re
already planning for next year!)

Super Bowl Ad Could Score a Touchdown for TM
Z
appy Zapolin and Peter Janssen have
proposed that the Transcendental
Meditation organization buy a Super Bowl
ad spot during the televised event, to create worldwide exposure for the technique
and to increase revenues and donations for
important TM programs and initiatives.
Zappy and Peter have offered to fundraise
the project and oversee its execution.
Zapolin says, “The Super Bowl is a
unique phenomenon where a global audience is happily and excitedly watching the
commercials, so sharing the message of TM
during the Super Bowl would permanently
put TM into the global consciousness.”
The pair already developed a television
spot they say will create maximum exposure and retention for TM. It even includes
an element of silence, which they believe
will set it apart from all other Super Bowl
ads and create significant buzz.
For Super Bowl 2000, Zapolin created an award-winning ad for his company,
Computer.com. His ad generated over one
million visits to his company website, created significant sales and members, and
was a key reason his business was successfully sold to Office Depot. Zapolin is confident that if TM.org generates a similar
number of visits it will equate to thousands
of new meditators and significant additional donations, at a time when they are
increasingly needed. Peter Janssen says,
“The additional exposure that TM.org will
receive from the major media leading up to
and after the Super Bowl will be as significant as the spot itself.”
Zappy and Peter add: “Maharishi always said, ‘Seek the highest first.’ We interpret that to mean that we should take this
unique moment to tell the whole world
about TM and set it into the world’s consciousness, and in that same moment create
significant revenues to support an increase
in the number of Pundits and Yogic flyers.”

COUPLES WHO ARGUE
The problem is not what you are arguing about, but the process of arguing itself. You are not
likely to resolve a disagreement while arguing, and the tone of voice you direct at each other is
more hurtful than you may realize. Learn how to work individually and jointly to avoid getting
triggered into an argument. Usually takes 2-3 sessions.

FAA Garden Tour…cont. from p. 1
the tropical plant among the multitude of
summer flowers that magically replace the
flowering bulbs. Even in winter the berm is
an attractive sight with snow covered evergreen and dried berry branches for birds.
However, unless you’ve personally toured
the rest of Dorothy’s garden, it is a bit of a
secret place you won’t want to miss.
In 1987, Dorothy initiated a community garden tour for the Fairfield Art Association, and it became an annual event. Her
own garden has been on the tour several
times. When she finally passed the torch,
the FAA decided to name the tour the Dor-
othy Bell Garden Tour. The Tour has been a
FAA staple for over 25 years now.
Due to 2013 weather and several unforeseen gardener’s family circumstances,
FAA decided to change the regular community event to every other year, and not
have it this summer. In a way, this works
out perfectly! We get to have the 25th
D.B.Garden Tour where it began in the first
place—Dorothy Bell’s awesome garden. We
are thrilled to honor her in this way.
This Sunday’s event is free—just come
enjoy and wish Dorothy the best.

number of women in the Senate in history,
most of whom he knows. According to
Bates, “It is not a numbers game. Remember, we don’t need to pass anything! This is
a letter to the President to undo the mistake
made by Vice-President Dan Quayle when
they opened the ‘labeling loophole’ as a deregulatory initiative in 1992. The Truth in
Labeling Act said to ‘label everything—and
genetically engineered food should never
have been exempted.”
According to Anne Dietrich, event
organizer, “Now is the time to remember
why the Revolutionary War was fought. A
few multi-national chemical companies
have taken ownership of our food and are
deciding for us what we eat and feed our
families. No one has the right to tamper
with your food without your knowledge!”
