“…and the Lord remembered her.” –1 Samuel 1:19b
“I had a spirit inside me saying, “choose life not death”.
My name is Candice and I am 24 years old. I was born and raised in North Carolina. I
started experiencing with mind altering substances when I was 15. At first it seemed like
“the cool” thing to do. It helped me get better acquainted with neighborhood friends, so I
thought. It made me feel like I belonged and was untouchable. Little did I know it was going to lead to more dangerous situations, risky lifestyles and my being in and out of jail.
This last time I got incarcerated everything was taken from me; my dignity, my self-worth
and my respect for myself. The little bit of spirituality within me was saying, “Don’t give
up now! You’ve come too far to give up on life and what it has to offer”. Deep down inside
and everywhere I turned I was faced with the big mess I had caused in my life. I knew that
if I gave up in jail I would only come back out with the same mind set to cover up my problems with drugs and pretend they weren't there. I knew I couldn’t do that because I had a
spirit within me telling me to choose life not death. As I went through the constant battle in
my mind my way looked easy on the surface. The spirit’s way looked hard because I was
going to have to face my mess, the mess I had made. I finally yielded to the spirit that was
within me and I chose to find somewhere that I would not get out and do the same thing
which lead me to jail in the first place. That’s when I was introduced to Hannah’s Haven, a place where I could go and face who I
was and what I had done to make a mess of my life, not to mention getting away from the familiar.
At Hannah’s Haven I am learning to become a lady, not just a mere addiction statistic in society. I am learning who had authority
over that spirit within me telling me to choose life and not death and his name is Jesus. It is truly a privilege to be able to live in
an environment where I am able to establish a relationship with Christ, at the same time finding out who I am and what my purpose
is here on earth.
Jehovah Jireh is truly our provider. As many of you know we consistently put our needs and petitions before the Lord asking that He will
remember the ladies at Hannah’s Haven and provide for our every
day essentials. We shared with you in our last newsletter the need for
better and safer transportation—And WOW did He provide. The old
van that we use around town has 220,000 miles on it and we wanted
the ladies to be able to travel to Black Mountain for a Women’s Retreat hosted by Grace Community Church. Through caring, loving
and obedient action fellow sisters and brothers in Christ made the
purchase of this beautiful Dodge Van possible. And it only has been
driven 38,000 miles. Isn’t God truly AMAZING!
