As we head toward the spring and many of our members from the North begin to make preparations to return home, there have been a lot of
questions as to the future of our Post. Many of you are wondering if I will be running for the position of Commander again this coming year.
Let me answer that early on in this message. No, I do not intend to run again this year. The decision to not run I made with mixed emotions,
the position of Commander is a very important position not just a title. When I first took over as Commander, our Post was in trouble and
therefore it required my undivided attention. After two years, we are back on solid ground thanks to the executive board which you elected
and all the volunteers that gave their time, talents, resources, and money to bring the Post to where it is today. Now it is time that I turn some
of my attention to my family and my home. I will be here to support our new Commander and intend to remain fully committed to the Post.
I have searched long and hard for the right person to lead this Post. The search has not been an easy one. I finally was able to convince the
person who is perfect for our Post. I plan to nominate, endorse, and fully support Mike Gagliardi for our next Commander. Mike has twice
taken the financial reins of the post and put us back in the black. He is dedicated, reliable, and selfless. His honesty and integrity are beyond
reproach. When I was uncertain on any given issue, Mike was the first person I turned to for advice. Whether or not it was what I wanted to
hear, I followed Mike’s advice to the letter.
During my tenure as Commander there were a lot of tough decisions that had to be made - some were not so popular and some I reversed myself, but all were made in the best interest of the Post. I sincerely hope that you all feel that I have served you well. Maybe in the future I will
once again with your support run for Commander. In some way you all have made an impression on my life. We have agreed, disagreed,
laughed, and cried together - it is what makes us a family.
This of course is not my last Commander’s message however I wanted to let everyone know what my intentions are. In my next and final
message, I will bid you all farewell as Commander and hello as a member.
Heriberto (Eddie) Cruz
Commander

SAL COMMANDER
Dear Members:
THIS ARTICLE IS ALL ABOUT ONE MAN AND THE WONDERFUL GENEROSITY OF MANY. THE MAN
IS RAY CARDILLO, S.A.L. MEMBER OF OUR GREAT POST. THE GENEROSITY IS OUR MEMBERS,
THOSE WHO GAVE FROM THE HEART AND GAVE OF THEIR TIME. I WANT TO THANK THE OFFICERS OF THE POST, AND THE LADIES WHO WENT DOOR TO DOOR COLLECTING WELL OVER A
HUNDRED GIFTS FOR THE RAFFLE. SPECIAL THANKS TO PAT & DAVE HARRIS WHO HELPED
MAKE OUR SPECIAL DAY A HAPPENING. THANKS TO ALL THAT PURCHASED RAFFLE TICKETS.
THANKS TO ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE THAT MADE THE CHILI COOK-OFF A TRUE SUCCESS.
IT ALL HAPPENED ON SUPERBOWL SUNDAY AND BECAUSE OF THE GREAT EFFORT OF THESE
TRULY DEVOTED PEOPLE, WE WERE ABLE TO GIVE RAY CARDILLO A CHECK FOR OVER $4,100.00!
THIS WILL HELP HIM WIN HIS BATTLE WITH CANCER.
I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW PROUD I AM OF OUR MEMBERS WHEN IT COMES TO HELPING A SISTER OR A BROTHER. BEING A MEMBER OF THE S.A.L. FOR OVER TWENTY TWO YEARS, I
HAVE SEEN OUR MEMBERS TIME AND TIME AGAIN COME TO THE AID OF THEIR FELLOW MAN.
AS S.A.L. COMMANDER, I THANK ALL OF YOU FOR BEING THERE WHEN NEEDED, AND AGAIN, I
AM SO VERY PROUD OF BEING A MEMBER OF AMERICAN LEGION POST 162.
As Always,
It’s A Privilege,
Jerry Mann, S.A.L. Commander

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
I am saddened to tell you that Bill Baird has passed away, on January 16th. “Tile Billy”, as he was known, and I
used to take the train the Miami VA Hospital together; sometimes we would stop at “Manny’s”, a little Cuban coffee shop. No one spoke English, but the beer was cold. I don’t know how he found it but hope he finds another on
this trip to take its place. Rest In Peace. We have also learned of the passing of John E. Shaw and Julius Toker.
On a happier note, Ralph Picariello of “City Pub” has come thru his triple bypass with flying colors. He is still a
little weak but that’s understandable. He faces more surgery when he is feeling stronger. Keep smiling, Ralph!
And how great it is to see “Pearl Harbor” Ed Hammond back at the Post after his recent illness.
I am sorry if I have left anyone out, but to avoid any omissions in the future, please call me with any information
you have on sickness and health. My cell phone number is 954-415-0444. If you know of any of our “family” who
has fallen ill, you can always leave the information in the Chaplain’s box by the front door.
For God and Country,
Mason Smith, Chaplain

I am usually not this lengthy in my message but we have a lot to talk about:
AMERICAN LEGION POST 162
RESTAURANT MENU
WHAT HAVE WE DONE??
To start, we had a joint meeting back in January, when Jerry Mann told us about an SAL member who was in need. We kicked
into gear and suggested that the Chili Cookoff, already scheduled for Superbowl Sunday would be an ideal time to have a
fundraiser. At the meeting, it was suggested that we buy a big screen TV to raffle at Superbowl Sunday. But Anne Wood got
hold of me the next day and said, why do we have to spend this money — let’s get donations. She, Al Dutton (who said this is
not his thing, he doesn’t like to ask for donations) and I, got into gear. The end result was: 116 raffle gifts, and a great fundraiser for one of our own — one of our “family”. And if that’s not what are about, then what?? You will see, in this Revielle,
a list of the merchants that donated. I ask you to please support them and thank them!! However, I have to thank all of our
members who donated their own gifts to make this the wonderful event that it was. I am just disappointed that there are some
people who wait until everyone else does the work, and then they step forward to take all the credit. But I guess that’s life!
WHAT ARE WE DOING??
Auxiliary Lunch — We are committed to doing an Auxiliary Lunch EVERY Saturday. We have a Waitress who is committed to dressing up in a “getup” each Saturday that has a different theme. We have expanded our menu to include “Specials”
each week — and we have added French Fries, which many of you have asked for, to our every Saturday Menu. Come on out
and try our Menu — and support your Auxiliary Saturday Lunch.
We are still collecting manufacturer’s coupons which we send to the Commissarys for our Military families. We so far have
sent over $400,000 in coupons and are still going. Al Dutton is the spearhead of this project for us, with his helpers, Mary
Bullard, Anne Wood, Paula, and so many others. We are trying to set up a Tuesday morning coupon clipping brigade, from
10:00 am - 2:00 pm to come to the Post and clip and sort coupons. Interested?? Call Mary at 954-421-6053, or just come.
We are still collecting cell phones, and all the accessories to donate to “Cells for Soldiers” which gives our deployed Military
personnel cell phone minutes, and we are still collecting “goodies” to send to our deployed troops. Please help!!
We still support our Deerfield Beach Outpatient Clinic; and we have sent lap robes to our only VA Nursing Home in Broward
County — Sandy Nininger VA Nursing Home, Pembroke Pines. And have delivered books there, thank you, Mason!!
We have selected our three (3) delegates to Girls State, and (3) alternates, and they will be going to Tallahassee in July for their
Girls’ State Session. We had nine applicants, all great, what a hard choice we had to make. Thank you Pearl McIntyre, and
Anne Wood for being there and being on the committee to choose our candidates. We wish them well.
Our Bingo (joint with the Legion) is doing well. We had a Bingo Committee meeting with Norma, Angie, Jan, Barry, Anne,
Virgil, Diane, and myself and have made some changes that we think will be better for the project. We are sending out flyers
to the local Condos, and public places to try to increase the people that come, in an effort to make it better. If you can, as a
member, why don’t you come out and support our Bingo, every Wednesday at 6:30 pm, and every Sunday at 4:30 pm. It is a
fun Bingo, the friendliest Bingo in Deerfield, and you will be supporting both your Auxiliary and your Post!!
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Initiation of new members conducted by the 9th District Staff will be held at our April meeting. If you are a new member, or
even a member who has never been initiated, please come and take part in the initiation ceremony.
We will be having our election of officers for the coming year at our May meeting. I encourage our members to take a more
active role in our Unit by stepping up and taking an office, or chair a committee, or at the very least, attend the meetings, (it’s
only once a month, and usually less than an hour), support your unit, have your voice heard at the meeting, not in the lounge.
We have to stop and ask ourselves why we became a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. I know, in my case, it is because I believe in what the organization stands for — we are a veteran’s organization, here to help the veterans, their families,
the young men and women who are serving today, and giving up their normal life for our freedom. And to keep this Unit
strong and able to do what we do, we all have to take part in it; we are here to continue to make this Post the best it can possibly be.
Yours in Service,
Maureen Costello, President
